    I just started doing this at home. It feels so good to get rid of so much crap I don't need! Also, folding and storing clothes vertically allows you to see everything in the drawer at once. I had buried great clothes that do spark joy at the bottom of a drawer, under a bunch of stuff I didn't need. I had forgotten those clothes even existed! Now I will see them every time I open the drawer and can enjoy them again!

    I do not think it would be an exaggeration to say that Marie is one of he most influential women today; she changes lives, by changes the attitude toward our possessions and loosening our grip on the temporary, to free more time to focus on the eternal. She is so kind and gracious too, a true lady, which is a rare gem these days.

    My stress free way to purge clothes is every January I turn all the hangers backwards. When I wear things I put them back the right way. The next January I donate everything that is still backwards. No thinking, no thanking. It also helps me to vary what I wear more. I glance through the backwards hangers and try something new. After 4 years of this I have about 1/2 the amount of clothes, but I wear them all so it feels like a lot.

    The most valuable thing we all desire is TIME. Time to be with family and friends, time to play and do the hobbies/sports we love, time to relax. If people would just STOP running the treadmill of working harder and longer just to be able to purchase and maintain all their "stuff" they'd be able to acquire that thing they desire most...TIME.

      Wish I could thumbs up this 10 more times. I watched a bunch of Marie Kondo clips. So many people commented that they have too much stuff for some of her tips to be practical. Looks like the problem is with our relationship with stuff in developed nations. Just stop buying so much stuff.

    Shopping is the number one culprit of clutterness. Minimize your possessions. Buy what you absolutely NEED. Invest in the future with the extra money. You would be surprised how liberating that is. Happiness comes from the small things in life not buying "stuff". Unfortunately, we are surrounded by advertisers and we live in a market society. Making it, thus, difficult to be a minimalist. If we try hard, we can achieve this, however.

    • @SpecialgiftsLA

      How do you deal with a society that demands you look 'rich' or put together and fresh in order to succeed in work life..I have achieved a sense of deep contentment within me since I only shop when I need something..but I feel like Iv gone too far..and feel down that I don't feel as presentable as I can..so that frustrates me sometimes..Iv minimizer spending and using only cash. This is saving me a lot. .and I prefer waiting til the need rather than the waste and burden of buying unnecessarily. Any advise on balancing or how to invest? ☺

    • @NabilB_YT

      @@SpecialgiftsLAYou already sound like you are on the right path by the mere fact that you have already made a decision to buy something when you need it. As for balancing why not start by taking a class or research about how to maximize your wardrobe with quality pieces of basic colors that last for years, for example, black skirt. Then you can be a little more whimsical with accessories. Thrift stores? Some people swear by them. Investing or saving with accounts offered at work. That is a great beginning. Take advantage of them. Like the 401-K which the employer gives you some money. The money is automatically deducted from yoyr paycheck. You won't miss it once you get started,
      pretend the money you clear is the money you make. I am assuming you are just starting out or I may be wrong. Take classes in investing or talk to successful people who know how to do it. Invest in yourself, education, knowledge is really valuable. Good Luck!!!

      Buy three high quality black suits, and 3 white button down shirts. Then add to it a couple things like black T-shirts/shells, and professional looking but classic tops, solid color, quality cut and material. (You may need to shop online for "slow fashion,") pay more, buy less. And you can get away with wearing your black suit the majority of the time, occasionally swapping pieces- a turquoise silk top instead of white button down, a open front cardigan instead of blazer, etc.
      Overall stick to classic pieces that don't go out of style that are high quality to last. Think " will I be able to wear this for 10-20 years?

    Great video, I work installing cabinets and wooden and metal mesh closet shelves in houses and apartments , I always say, the more shelves and cabinets you have, the less mess you have.
    I have a great way to clean my construction warehouse/workshop that is about the size of a 2 car garage, first I move everything from one side of the workshop to the other side of the work shop, then clean and vacuum the fist side along with picking up all the nails, screws and bolts that are scattered on the floor and put them in bins organized by size to reuse them, Then after the first half of the shop is clean I start putting the tools and materials back, and throw out the trash, Then I repeat the same method on the second half of the shop, it usually only takes less than an hour and it also helps keep track of inventory and the location of the tools. And it is great to sit back and look at a clean work shop, It also works great for cleaning 2 car garages when the weather is bad and you can't move things outside.

    At the end, Lara Spencer missed a couple of other very important components to this method. First, it's crucial that ALL the items of clothing be taken off the rack and then each piece must be touched. It's then that you know whether or not it sparks joy. It's amazing how well this works! I would also encourage not to second guess yourself after that moment you know it doesn't spark joy.

    So far she mentioned in her book. None turning back to 'messy' home again after using her 'method' -- that is if they really followed her 'method'....
    Why American have so much stuff is because (1) US houses are way too 'huge' - oversize. Its natural people just like to fill up the 'empty' space. (2) US stuff is too easy and real cheap to get & also get them without using 'real cash' - all mostly in the form of 'loan' or credit card. (3) Very High % of American build their 'happiness' on stuff instead of on 'experience'. (4) Too many broken family & relationships. Too many rejection in life - unable to handle them. Stuff is used to fill up the 'emptiness'.

    There were a couple of errors in the key elements of her method in the follow up segment. You are supposed to take all of your clothes out of the closet and then go through them one by one and put back only what sparks joy, and the folding method was not correct.

    Marie Kondo: Please work with all charities, etc., to help organize and speed up their wardrobe give away events. So often what is given away to second hand clothing stores ends up in the dumpsters because it took too long to get there and is not clean. Also, second hand clothing stores often have leaking roofs, wet floors, etc. It would help to time events (at their school gyms, etc. on a weekly basis) to exactly when people want a new outfit for proms, graduations, interviews, weddings, Christmas presents, Easter presents, birthday presents, funerals, or other formal events. Try to work with FEMA, and homeless shelters, to help people immediately while they are waiting in endless lines all day, day after day. Try to work with people who commute back and forth to remote populations, such as American Indian Reservations (some young people call it, 'The Rez'); RAM Remote Access Medicine; the elderly in remote Greenland; all over the world where people need warm clothing, outdoor boots, tarps for outdoor animals, etc. Children in Afghanistan without shoes have frozen to death. Planning, timing and organizing events could help prevent quality items from going to the landfill. (There is an important You Tube interview by 'Porcelain' about her work in a second hand clothing store in North or South Carolina that everyone should hear before they buy anything used. These stores all need an in-house, heavy duty machines, laundromat (cafe style) for all customers to use (for free) before they walk out with their used clothing items). Thank you, Marie Kondo, for your helpful ideas.

      I also only have a small wardrobe, but I make do with what I have. I am new to the Konmari method, but I am in LOVE! I will definitely be using this with my towels and bedsheets, and a lot of other things.
      I store most of my daily wear items on hangers, or folded (stacked) on my one shelf. Sheets, towels, pyjamas, going out wear, etc. is stored in boxes in the other part of the closet. I will definitely use the folding method here.

    what if hardly none of your clothes bring you joy?!

    • @Sirena860
      @Sirena860 6 років тому +8

      Been there.
      Step 1: Don't think joy, think utilitarian: Keep what you need from each subcategory (shirts, pants, shoes). The stuff you wear all the time. The stuff that you might not love but is useful. The stuff that you always end up wearing first after you've just done the laundry. You can sort them by laying them out from most to least worn (each subcategory). If you realize that you wear something all the time but you actually hate it, pull it out now. Keep enough from the most worn side to keep you clothed for a week or two (long enough that you don't have to constantly be washing clothes).
      Step 2: Use what you kept as placeholders, and start intentionally filling your closet with stuff you love. Whenever you get an item of clothing that you ❤❤❤❤, replace one of those items you kept just so you wouldn't go naked. Enjoy the evolution of your closet! Soon you'll feel like a queen/ king in all your clothes.

    • @debbiem6406
      @debbiem6406 6 років тому +4

      Then maybe it's time to think about why you're consistently making those choices. Figure out your wardrobe needs; what's comfortable, colors you enjoy wearing, etc., and go from there. Or, maybe it's the concept of feeling "joy" regarding your clothing that's not resonating with you. Use another word rather then joy, to describe when an article of clothing just feels right, just clicks for you.

    • @ultravioletpisces3666
      @ultravioletpisces3666 6 років тому +2

      I went to school with a girl, every time I saw her I said "wow I love your shirt!" I finally asked her why all of her shirts there so amazing and she said, "every time I go shopping I only buy one item of clothing-- the one that's my favorite. That way all my clothes are my favorite."
      You could do the same, but with a whole outfit. Only buy your favorite 1 or 2 outfits each time you shop. The more time you take before letting clothes into your wardrobe, the less time it will take you to get ready in the morning, when all your pieces make you luk and feel great.
      If you don't care about clothes that much then just come up with a uniform look, and feel joy that you don't have to think about what to wear.
