Hi...and good morning Simon, yes this is a problem that should definitely be solved. It's as exciting as a thriller. I have owned and repaired many cars, there are many reasons why
Hello! I had an odd knocking noise much like your, maybe slightly more "plasticy". It turned out to be failed ignition coil mounts. I glued mounts to the valve cover with cold welding. You should definetly check the ignition coils
Hi buddy, thanks for your comments. I have ordered new plugs and coil packs, so I will see if it does make a difference when I swap them all over, fingers crossed.
@projects in the barn ah OK. In that case fresh oil and filter and run it up to temp might just be sticking valve lifter . Stay positive is my motto hopefully nothing serious
@life_on_cars I agree buddy, positive attitude all the way, my hope is also for a sticky lifter. I know they sell some weired and wonderful potions on the market for such jobs, so may throw some of that in before I change to fresh new oil and see what happens 👍
What year is this car Simon? The one thing I didn't think of from the last video is piston slap, early cars suffered because they used Nikosol coating in the barrels, sulphur in unleaded fuel destroys it. The problem was cured on cars after 1999 from memory. Could be why it was layed up.
@@projectsinthebarn I think that year had plastic timing chain tensioners that were later replaced with metal ones. But that sound does come from the supercharger and they are supposed to be oil filled. It may be that the supercharger just need oil. My XKR has 120K miles but I have not checked or replaced the oil in the supercharger. Maybe now is the time to check that.
@awalk5177 I would deffo check your oil after 120000, but that's good going, buddy. Timing chain tensioners could be a possibility. Without removing the covers, I have no idea if they have ever been replaced. It will be well worth my while doing them as a matter of course I reckon.
@@awalk5177 timing chains tend to rattle and stop when the throttle is applied, this has a definite tick. There is a plastic bush in the back end of the supercharger which crumbles and causes a tick. Piston slap could be a possibility depending when the car was built and not first registered, most of the bad ones had the engine replaced under warranty. A sticking tappet/rocker arm can also cause a tick like this too.

When I owned a BMW E46, the advice given on the members forum for any unsual knocking sounds was to turn the volume up on the stereo 😂😂
Haha 😄 🤣 😄 🤣 that's very true 👍
Try popping serpentine belt off that drives supercharger start up see if noise has gone
Hi buddy, thanks for your response. I have done this, and sadly, the knocking is still present. I have a video of it and will post it up 👍

@projects in the barn yes good idea to put an engine flush through it l
I always think of a valve first. But there are many reasons. you will find it I'm sure. Greetings Udo
Hi Udo, let's hope we get to the bottom of the bottom, as long as its not actually the bottom end of the engine 😅
Could be the Supercharger gears worn causing the lobes to knock. Superchargers are relatively cheap to get overhauled or to replace....
Hi paul, that's a good shout buddy. It is deffo rumbling and will need a service for definite 👍

It's a year 2000, so hopefully missed the nikasil lining saga, but you never know.

@@bespincustompropsbombarta8300 I am hoping it is a stuck lifter somewhere, and nothing more serious than that 🤞
