      That's because British people emigrated to Australia and took their tastes and cooking knowledge with them so Australians and Kiwis have similar British food.

    Don't know if you knew but Vegemite was actually created during wartime due to the shortage of Marmite, so that's why they taste similar, Australians apparently loved Marmite and wanted to copy it when they couldn't get it.

    There's a reason that Penguin bars and Tim Tams are so alike. Tim Tams are an Aussie's attempt to make a better Penguin. Specifically Ian Norris from the Arnott’s company visited England in 1958 while on a trip around the world looking for inspiration for a new product, and took away the idea for a biscuit similar to the Penguin.

    Tablet is often served as a small square alongside a coffee in restaurants after a meal. A sweet treat. Too much and you’ll be peeling yourself from the ceiling from the sugar high. Most folk would just break off a square from the bar to snack on rather than eat the entire bar in one. Thankfully you tried Mrs Tilly’s as that’s one of the best mass produced ones.

      Back when I was a kid in the early 80’s and VCR’s started to become commonplace, there were two different types of VCR available (at least here in the U.K.) there was the VHS and Betamax. Betamax had smaller cassettes and in general were considered to be a little bit better quality but VHS was cheaper, so it took off and Betamax died off but the cassettes were still known as VHS tapes even though they didn’t need to differentiated from anything else.

    • @KristyandSteve
      @KristyandSteve  8 місяців тому +1

      Oooh never heard of Betamax, not sure if we had them in Australia 🤔 We used to love going to the video library and borrowing vhs tapes as kids (also grew up in the 80's) - so fun!

    • @lynnejamieson2063
      @lynnejamieson2063 8 місяців тому

      @@KristyandSteve I was born in the mid 70’s, so I’m pretty sure that Betamax were on their way out by the mid 80’s. Our first VCR was a front loader Betamax, which seemed so posh as most people were still getting top loader VCR’s. It must have cost my parents a small fortune at the time and it had to be replaced within maybe five years or so because we could no longer get tapes for it. I’m pretty sure that the first rental video I ever saw in it was Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark…I don’t know if it was me or my parents or my brothers that had a thing for Harrison Ford because the first film I remember seeing in the cinema was The Empire Strikes Back 😄

    Irn Bru (for accurate pronunciation try: "Eye-run Broo") has a distinct flavour which people assume is going to be like Cream Soda, or Orange, but is neither. (the colour confuses people when they can't identify the taste!)
    Try Indian Tonic Water mixed with a little Elderflower Cordial, (and IGNORE the colour or lack of it,) and you'll have the exact flavour of Irn Bru.

    Hi guy's i do hope that your both well, im the same as you guy's when it comes to Marmite a good amount is nice but most people would put less than half of that amount, as Steve said its sticky and a pain to put on hot buttered toast as it wants to stick to the knife lol and for that reason i always use Marmite in sandwiches or a good teaspoon to gravy for the Sunday roast and always vegemite on toast as it's so easy to spread, pickled onion Monster Munch our one of my favorites too but not a good idea to eat if you're going out on the pull for your breath 😊, last thing is that chocolate bars like penguins and lots of other cheaper types of chocolate snacks around ten years ago they were really good and then they all came out with a new and improved recipe which took out a lot of the cocoa powder and made the chocolates so thin to this day and i don't really like them now to be honest, I'm waffling on now so great to watch as always and stay safe wherever you are, god bless 🙏

    People do eat Oat Cakes by themselves but I would only ever eat them as part of a "cheese and biscuits" selection with other biscuits and collection of cheeses. Scottish Tablet is similar to "Kendal Mint Cake" and often used for energy by those out hiking (not something you really eat as an everyday snack). UK Biscuits tend to go very well with your favourite cuppa. My favourites biscuits for dunking in a Cup of Tea would be "Rich Tea Digestives" or "Ginger Nuts". And because I lived within smelling range of the McVities factory in south Manchester that would have to be the brand.

    I think what I am seeing with these Non-UK vs UK Food type videos, is that there is a definitely an East/West Split of Sugar or Salt/Savory based snack preferences. In North America they have more of a sweet tooth or blander palate so they cannot handle quite salty/savory snacks. Everything over there is also loaded with added sugars and flavourings. Whereas in the UK & East European/Asian & Australasian palates are more suited to salty/savoury & sour foods and more of our snacks have more natural ingredients, so we can handle different complex flavours and heat much better.

    If you want to get a smaller jar of Marmite, all you have to do is have a baby in a UK maternity hospital. When mother and baby leave the maternity hospital, they take away with them what's called a 'bounty box' which contains various useful samples for a new mother and child. I'm not sure why a miniature jar of Marmite is included, but it always is, (I presume it's a suggested foodstuff as an iron supplement!)
