You hit nail on the head about the thematics of this album in relation to his mixtapes. In an interview Abel literally said that trilogy felt claustrophobic because it represents how he’s never left Toronto in all his 21 years of living...until around kiss land time when he travelled to Tokyo Japan and it’s the furthest he’s ever been from home and it felt like a different world (almost terrifying and isolating) thus inspired the expansiveness sound that is kiss land. If you listen again it’s very Japanese inspired :) when I hear the songs I feel like I’m in a dystopian city from an anime and I’m in a skyscraper building looking down at all the urban neon lights with rain trickling down the window, it’s stunning
still was nowhere near as good as the trilogy

I always got Japanese vibes just with the different sounds he uses, he does such an amazing job replicating his experiences in this beautiful album, I think of the same thing when I listen to them, theres just something more elevating, liberating, just something deeper and sentimental overall compared to trilogy.

That’s what Kiss Land is to me, an environment that’s just honest fear… So when you hear the screams in the record and you hear all these horror references and you feel scared, listen to the music because I want you to feel what I’m feeling. Kiss Land is like a horror movie."

Pure Madness abel did a fantastic job of creatin a cinematic atmosphere. from trilogy all the way now to heartless / blinding lights, he’s so good at creatin a world n bringing us into that world even if we cant relate to it.
So true, every time I listen to the track I feel scared but then imbrace it and live inside it, it happens every time, never gets numb. Those screams always get me.
Is that why the second part of the "Kiss Land" sounds so evil and horrifying?
Omg, I listened to the album on my own a few months ago, coming back to this video and comment, YES. It was scary. And I didn’t wanna listen to a single weeknd song after it lol, even happier tracks cuz I’m like nah this man is crazy. Very creative work though

also for some background, he went to Tokyo, Japan for some months to create this masterpiece. I believe this whole album was influenced directly from Tokyo. Quote from Abel via MTV interview. "Kiss Land is the story after Trilogy; it's pretty much the second chapter of my life," he continued. "The narrative takes place after my first flight; it's very foreign, very Asian-inspired. When people ask me 'Why Japan?' I simply tell them it's the furthest I've ever been from home. It really is a different planet."

I was fortunate enough to visit last year. It honestly did feel like a totally different planet. For example, while I waiting for my friends outside a 7-11 in Kyoto, I watched a Japanese man pull up in an Aston Martin (very expensive car), hop out and head into the shop...while leaving his car running the entire time with nobody else in it. This was mind blowing to me, a guy from a rough part of the UK where you can’t even leave your bikes unattended without someone stealing it lol. Japan is absolutely stunning, I hope I’m able to return in the future after all the madness that’s happened this year.

I did not appreciate this album when I first heard it. Now, it's in my top 3 Weeknd projects. It's just so cinematic and dark, I love it.

its THE album i go back to 'til this day. kissland didn't get much recognition for whatever reason, but its my fav work of his.
Tears in the rain shakes me to my core every single listen. After listening to it for 8-9 years I still think it may be the best track I’ve ever listened too.

I know that the Trilogy is an iconic album, and it has some of Abel's best work, but In my personal opinion KissLand is such a work of art, the melodies, the vocals, different influences, every time I listen to it again is like watching a great movie, and you always pick up some new minute details, a new string, or some background melodies, and envision a new scene in your head. It's an album that should be listened with your eyes closed on a quality pair of headphones, alone, without interruption, because transitions from song to song are flawless. Again, just my opinion.

Kissland is really theatrical, meant to be played in stages. It really captivates the audience into feeling what’s being said . Its one of the many reasons i love this record so many layers
Abel actually said himself that Kiss Land is heavily inspired by the theme of horror which explains the screams and nuances you hear particularly in the title track. Genius.
Those last two tracks are definitely bonus tracks, not like the final tracks added to each mixtape for the Trilogy set. So, yes, "Tears in the Rain" is the real final track to send off Kiss Land!
I remember someone saying you’ll be blown away by Adaption, and i kinda wished i could see more reaction on that song. But man The Prophet has done it again!!! This was amazing, and i cannot wait for the BBTM reaction!!

Every day I hear something new when a song off this album plays. A vocal. A different synth. I feel different impacts on different phrases of songs. Since I started listening to him in 2014. Something new. So many layers. PERFECTION
Kiss land is unexplainably amazing. The town, belong to the world, it’s just spot on delightful. He may not be producing this music no more, but were extremely lucky to have been gifted with it in the first place.

I know its blasphemy in the Weeknd community to say this, but I prefer Kiss Land's title track to HOB/GTG. It has everything I love about GTG, but I like the vibe of the instrumental even more. Both are top 10 from Abel tho XO

Glad you gave this album a listen, hopefully you'd listen to it more later off cam and in your own mood. This album grows on you man. Idk it least it did to me even though the first listen was amazing it still grew on me and I liked the album even more.

Marveling at how quickly you caught on to his broadened horizons, and some of your comments remind me just how much this album sounds to our ears the way a movie looks to our eyes.
One other thing that I'm sure many people touched on, and I believe you picked up on a little at the beginning saying it almost sounded darker, was that he wanted this to seem somewhat like the musical version of a horror movie.

the second half is in a class of its own... So moody, and lyrically impressive...
Kissland is such an underrated project man. When it first came out it was getting some rough criticism from people and i still dont know why till this day. Maaaaaybe because people weren't necessarily expecting this type of sound and production from Abel after listening to Triology, who knows. I think Kissland almost has the perfect blend of dark and pop/mainstream sound. This was also a beginning of a new chapter for Weeknd's life and career. I mean if you really put things into perspective, this album was essentially a reflection of just that. Maybe its because this is when I first started to listen to his music before he really took off, so im kinda bias in that sense. Overall, Kissland has to be at least a top 3 project of his.

I have never looked at Odd Look as an add on to Kiss Land, it is definitely different, but I think you should give it another deeper listen now, looking at it as a different work of art, it really is an amazing song
I have seriously never had a man crush on anyone but the Weeknd. Dude has swag, money, stays grounded, doesn't let fame change him. Amazing voice and artistic ability from the music to the videos. Love that fucking guy.

Not gonna lie, the first time i heard "Wunderlust" i thought it was a Michael Jackson song that i've never heard
The way he compared trilogy and Kiss Land as on being in a room and the latter being more spread out, I felt that in my soul. Kiss Land takes you somewhere completely different, it takes you to another place. Man I love this album, it's so slept on.
