- Another Mintrom Movies video on The Weeknd! The Weeknd’s Kiss Land is a pretty underrated album. But I just love Kiss Land and wanted make this The Weeknd Video Essay to explore why I think it’s misunderstood, hence the title Kiss Land - The Weeknd’s Misunderstood Masterpiece. Seriously, this album is a hidden gem and easily one of The Weeknd’s best in my humble opinion. I hope you guys enjoy the video, and I hope you all are doing well.

Like every XO fan would say "Kiss land was ahead of its time"
Definitely best album of 2013 imo
@@Commandosoap777 agree
That and I feel like at the time people really didn’t understand his pain like I was 16 when he dropped kissland but I understand it more now Bc I’m older and experience more
So the album is on my list as my favorite Bc it’s like now it hits different
@@user-ew6el2xt7r Yeah I know right it resonates with your soul or something everything about the album. It really is a masterpiece hope Able does a part 2 of it.
It was right on time imo , doc McKinney and abel killed it . His best album .
Kissland is one of his darkest albums and most ppl can't relate to it , but it's fire.
I see what you did there 👀
With how rampant simp culture has become in recent years, I’d be surprised to find someone that can’t at least somewhat relate to Belong To The World.
@@prettierjesus3119 well this aint nothing to relate to.
even if you tried
This ain't nothing to relate to. Even if you tried.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, Professional, The Town, Adaptation, Love in the Sky is the best 4 track run ever
YES!!
Wanderlust, Kiss Land, Pretty, Tears In The Rain is better
Tied with Montreal, Outside, XO/The Host, Initiation for me.
Yes. The transitions are seamless.
slap belong to the world on the end and call it the best 5 song run ever while you’re at it
This album doesn't even feel like songs, it's a whole cinematic vibe. I can never listen to it just doing something. I always lay down and feel the music. Truly a masterpiece and definitely misunderstood
bro this is literally what ive been saying its so good its like music youd hear out of a movie
fr@@loco4771
fr
I always say that a psychological horror film based on Kissland would work so well
I really don't care what the general audience thinks about this album. This is my most favorite album of all time.
Love every song except Live For
yeah lol i fucking hate live for
Is not that bad
Same. Use to love live for but that was the only song that grew stale. The rest are amazing
Only reason i don't like Live For is because Drake is there
Drake completely ruins the song, I feel the same about Crew Love
this album is one of the best albums to ever exist, and so many people still don't know about it. I always call it a haunted carousel ride because thats what it feels like you're on the entire time you're listening to it. it's a masterpiece
this is actually pretty accurate
@@bigpoppa02 like you're moving in slow motion while the world around you is moving twice as fast. specifically the transition from the first part of kiss land to the second. trust me, I know what you mean. I live off of this album
Fucking facts. It's sonically so different from the rest of his projects, I clouding trilogy. The themes somewhat match what original three mixtapes but he's travelling the world now at this point and becoming a worldwide recognize named. It's just such a different situation and time, which makes it that much better.
a haunted carousel ride… that’s exactly how it feels
I think the reason this is my favourite album is because it's sonically unmatched and was more than just the music. Like there have been albums that come close like Lorn's stuff but Kiss Land just has a rly specific sound which I just love. I also love the style of the album so much like green is my favourite colour and it's everywhere. And I love japanese aesthetics too it adds so much character to the album especially with Oxcy. I also feel like this album shows how important promotion makes an album even better. Like when he posted those teaser vids, the concert trailers, the Oxcy character, the music videos man I just love everything about this album lol
I feel like the whole Japanese aesthetic was ahead of it's time too. I'm pretty sure this album came out just before anime was super popular in mainstream culture.
@@mintrommovies you don’t even understand the feeling of listening to memento mori episode 9 kissland… it’ll change your world
kissland was his worst album tho, maybe the worst album release that year i would say
@@lucasvanberkel9864 nah, just not an album for people who are into regular pop music. It's his most musical and cinematic album by far.
It’s not mainstream pop. It’s tingles we’re not to make you feel good, but vibe and attempt to relate.
Extremely underrated Channel [just like the album lmfao]
bro thas what i been sayin
This album is still underrated, love how well it has aged
I used to hate kissland soo much , until I slowly and slowly started listening to it . I fell in love right away and started listening to it every day . It’s truly a masterpiece
yep! i loved it initially. then saw how it seemed to fall flat compared to his other albums. but time holds this album tight
Same here
Kissland is 150x better than Beauty Behind the Madness imo. I'd say that till this day it's his best project.
Which is exactly why BBTM was a big disappointment for me because Kissland was a damn masterpiece
People generally say Kissland was his worst album or don’t even know it exists. But I personally think BBTM takes that spot. Don’t get me wrong though, the Weeknd’s worst is still exceptional 😌👌🏾
Bbtm is his weakest album fr
Imo every Kissland's tracks is a masterpiece (except live for)
@@cahesolo9267 facts!
BBTM was a dissapointment imo. It's still a good album with good songs, but in comparison to his other albums (trilogy, kissland, afterhours, starboy...) its uncomparable. The only songs that became famous from BBTM are Often and The Hills
I love how "soft" and airy his vocals on this album are. If that makes sense, idk. Lyrically, I think its his best work.
Totally agree!!!
💯
kissland is like that art house indie movie that only gets high reviews by experts but it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s so cinematic, heavily industrial music and definitely has its own theme and mood. Absolutely his most poetic album and my personal favorite. It’s that sort of iykyk
Sometimes i really wonder if kissland dropped after beauty behind the madness, how would ppl react to it
Never thought of it that way but oh my goodness it’ll be a different world if so
sheesh
I see.abel tesfaye aka weekend xx ur more than just a pin up artist xx me personally yeah i a huge fAn but ive lost everyhing i lost my family thru passing i feel lost. I feel lef down used and although i hide behind make up i am lonley. I hear all the words lyrics yo ur songs and no i no nut job but the lyrics speak what i feel x
@@merabsanchez1674 absolutely
@@charlene1441 crazy what music can do, its always here for us
The dark lyrics, those beats, green as one of my fav colors, the japanese aesthetic are things i love and the far from home feels so relatable with me since i grew as a poor in the city and now i live comfortable in a smaller comfortable city
This album is probably my favorite of all time and kinda makes me feel sad i will never see something like this again
R&B’s dark side of the moon. Cheers.
if kiss land got the recognition it deserved when it came out then it wouldn't resonate as a masterpiece with me like it does now. the fact that it is underrated is what leads me to love it so much because it genuinely astounded me how such magnificent music was actually hidden
This
Kiss Land is my favorite weeknd album besides Trilogy. In early 2013, I started listening to the weeknd heavily and listened to Trilogy as a whole for the first time and it was the best body of music I ever heard. It completely changed my life and helped me cope with a bad breakup with my HS sweetheart. I listened it everyday until Kiss Land came out and Kiss Land just blew me away. It was very lyrical, it was dark, it was deep and it was different. One of my biggest regrets in life is not going to the Kiss Land tour but I’ve been to every tour since. Kiss Land is my favorite studio album of his because it’s so raw and takes you to a different place. It’s not for everyone, you have to be in a certain frame of mind to really understand it and appreciate it. I love the weeknd and it’s bitter sweet that after Kiss Land he went commercial pop. I feel like if people appreciated what he did with KL more he would’ve continued with that sound. We still have elements of trilogy/KL weeknd in his new music but it’s not the same. I will never forget how Kiss Land made me feel in 2013 and beyond. All hail Kiss Land 🖤💚
Nobody wants to admit it, but this is his best album. Literally no other artist has put out an album with so much truth and honestly about their pain and the pain they cause to others. The production alone proves how amazing it is. I really wish I knew his creative process making this masterpiece. I also wish he recognized this as the undefeated album it is. Finally last year he gave it more acknowledgment but I really hope it’s on his next setlist. Fingers crossed 🤞🏾🤞🏾
Nah house of balloons and after hours are better in my opinion, plus that’s very subjective so you can’t really say that nobody wants to admit it’s his best cause to some people and their preferences it’s not, still kissland is amazing.
This album having professional, adaptation, belong to the world and tears in the rain is actually unbelievable, like those are 4 of some of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
EXACTLY. Adding on to that Kiss Land, Pretty, Love in the sky, the town is literally just unfair. Also tears in the rain is undoubtably my favourite final song to an album of all time, as well as my 2nd favourite Abel song
*Easily my favorite of his albums to date, Kiss Land is in such a powerful lane of its own.*
I remember I hated Kissland & then all of a sudden I fell in love with it. Adaptation is FLAWLESS. FLAWLESS. & Tears in the Rain belongs in the MOMA.
my 2 favorites as well 💯 the grittiness of the production really helps it shine, truly a work of art
I always feel like crying when listeting to this album. Not in a bad way, every time I lay down, in the middle of the night, feeling the safeness and peace of the night itself and relaxing for a while, with this emotionally-loaded album, I feel like I go to that universe, feel like someone understands and can let my mind relax, to the point when I just let out the heaviest things weighing me down
I get so immersed in this dark twisted and magnetic world, that I almost wish to be in it, it is kind of addicting
Kiss Land was such a personal-feeling album. Up until After Hours, it felt like the only album that was a reflection of Trilogy as an evolution to studio album status and quality. Which makes sense, seeing as how it was his debut studio album. But it wasn't his commercial breakthrough, we wouldn't get that until Beauty Madness. He does say that Kiss Land is the only album he feels like he could make a sequel to. Am I the only one who feels like After Hours is kind of a spiritual successor?
This is my favorite album of all time. I honestly think this is the most underrated album in history.
True Weeknd fans would say this is a top 3 Abel album and maybe artistically the best album he’s created
Kissland was a first listen hit for me! I mean it sounded so different & nostalgic for some reason. Dont get me wrong trilogy is a masterpiece but kissland is so beautiful ( Tears in the rain)

FINALLY. Someone gets it!! Kissland is the misunderstood middle child🤦🏾♂️. His most Cinematic album EVER
i just started listening to the weeknd and i'm loving it so much
wow happy to hear that man!
Welcome to the XO fam!
Welcome!! What are your favorite tracks so far? I was just recently in this position as well so I’m curious what songs and stuff you like!
@@coastercraziness I like starboy, die for you, i feel it coming, the hills, take my breath and stuff like that and i'm just about to listen to after hours
@@flaminkoyuh get ready, I don’t wanna overhype it so I won’t say anything, but let me know how you like it! It was my first Weeknd album so it holds a special place in my heart
what a fucking era . beautiful imagery to match the amazing immersive genius lyricism and production
Kiss Land was an album that helped me accept my darkness. Which was being constantly alone despite being surrounded by people that I can't trust.
10 years later and i'm still replaying this album!! His best body of work and one of the greatest albums of all time 🔥
The song Kissland alone is so well made, lyrics hit deep and I relate to a dark time of my life
Makes me so happy to see someone talk about this album. From beginning to end, so many fantastic tracks, amazing yet scary production, scary lyrics, and a crazy journey into stardom. What a fantastic album
Wow I had no idea Professionals was about himself n his new found relationship to fans I always thought it was about a groupie, Escort, or stripper never knew it had a double meaning one of his best intros
Kissland will forever be my favorite album. I consider Trilogy mixtapes and a category All by itself. Kissland is a amazing body of Art.
KissLand was and still is my favorite album Abel ever made. Never got showed enough love.
THANK YOU. SOOOO UNDERAPPRECIATED
My all time favourite album, nothing comes close. The lyrics, theme, production, everything about kissland is amazing! Top 3 kissland, trilogy, after hours!
Honestly, I am somehow happy that not many people know and like this album :)
Love this!! Good work man. I also loved your theory for "Professional" because I always viewed that he's talking to a stripper etc so you've introduced me to another take of the story
So factssssssss
Kiss land Really is a masterpiece, I actually heard kiss land first and discovered how amazing of an artist the Weeknd was, I needed more of his content so i did some digging and the boom, little did I know that trilogy was staring right at me all along.
Such a good video yet again... Waiting to see more The Weeknd related videos from you!
Thanks! I love making these videos so more are definitely on the way
I bought this album on CD just after it came out. Absolutely loved it then and still my favourite body of work from him.
Til this day Kissland is still my personal favorite Weeknd album, it’s like a film in music form and it sounded so different than all the other albums released in 2013. I even got Oxy tattooed on my wrist! Of course I love After Hours and BBTM but Kissland just hits different especially since it came out when I was in high school and listening to it now as an adult, the lyrics resonate with me even more and I’m still uncovering things from this album. Also it has Tears in the Rain and the title track Kissland on it which are my top 5 favorite Weeknd songs
I have a love/hatred relationship with this album. I hate how many people sleep on it but I absolutely love this album for every reason you mentioned. It's always been my go to for Able !
I feel bad when I found out that not 1 track from this made it to Highlights !?!?
Was legit listening to this album last night that’s crazy
House of balloons was the establishment of who The Weeknd is. Kiss land is the story of the tour life and a universe filled with horror. Beauty behind the madness blew Abel up with the hills, I can’t feel my face, in the night, etc… and established more about who he is.
Starboy is well about a Starboy. My Dear Melancholy is about him going threw a break up nothing new like Mintrom Movies said almost every Weeknd album (-Starboy) is about a break up or him losing something his faith etc…After hours is him trying to get the girl back but threw out the album he’s want’s her “Out of my dreams” and establishing more about who he is in this modern time. We’ll have to see what the next albums about when it comes out next year. Appreciate the video man kiss land is a good album but it was rushed and it disappeared out of people minds to fast.
My top 6 albums are literally all abels projects, thinking of trilogy as one piece, it comes first 100%, but second is and always will be a close 2nd, I hear people talking about it and I just don’t understand ☹️ it’s beautiful
Please do a video on BBTM next, matter fact do one on every weeknd album.
Trilogy will forever be my fav but I respect what he was trying to do with kissland, it was creative as hell.
Kissland is better than trilogy.
The aesthetic of this album is unmatched, no one can recreate this and that’s okay. He poured his heart out and it made me realize a lot of things about myself as well. I wish to meet Abel one day, his music has impacted my life and doesn’t even know it
This was my first Weekend album and completely hooked me since 2012
Honestly only dusty people dislike kissland. Shit was like the big series finale for his mixtapes. There’s just something cinematic about the album
I think kiss land is the perfect transition space. Some of my fave songs. ‘Belong to the world’ is so vast and cinematic.
I played this album while moving out from my hometown. Definitely a whole new experience. It gained a place in my heart that could never be beaten
Kiss Land is my favorite Weeknd album. All his albums are great but Kiss Land is something else. It takes you on a journey.
Saw it performed live and it was honestly my favorite tour of his. Also met him after the show
Thank you so much for putting this together. Kiss Land is one of my all time favorite albums and it makes me happy when it gets the recognition it deserves.
This entire album is such an emotional, theatrical rollercoaster that stands completely on it’s own. No matter how much I’ve listened to it I STILL continue to find new layers and hidden meanings throughout it all.
It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Hearing Abels sheer emotions throughout After Hours (especially on Until I Bleed Out) put tears in my eyes. I’m sincerely hoping he will apply that same emotional vulnerability on his new album.
I think all the cards are in his favor for him to make an album that feels reminiscent of Kiss Land.
Fuck, I would love nothing more than that.
"Speaking of awful decisions, this next song features a verse from Drake" too funny man:D
Great video btw❤
me fr. without Drake, that song would have been better as for toleration but that nikka ruined it all 🙄
I love this album so much and I love this video thank you for The Weeknd vids I love them
Absolutely beautiful album and amazing analysis. My favourite project from Abel.
I was waiting for someone to make a video about this masterpiece and it finally happened, so happy.
This has got to be one of the best Essays ive seen on youtube. Amazing Video.
I love Kissland for the same reason that I love the movie Lost In Translation. Both take place in Japan and have that being alone in a strange environment feeling. It's about mood and experience like a journey. Still my favorite The Weeknd album.
Gotta check that movie out!
thank you bro this video is a masterpiece
Kissland....is fire...one of the best
Kissland is my favorite album
My ratings:
1. Kiss land
2. Trilogy
3. MDM
4. After hours
5. BBTM
6. Starboy
One of my favorite albums ever made. Nothing puts me through so many emotions as this masterpiece.
Got into The Weeknd in 2015 like a lot of people. I didn’t really listen to anything outside of his mainstream at first but then I went back and listened to Trilogy and Kissland and both albums were amazing. The sounds, the lyrics, the atmosphere, everything about them were amazing. I’m glad I went back and listened to these albums as it made me appreciate The Weeknd as an artist even more.
amazing video man, you perfectly encapsulated the unfiltered rawness that makes this album so appealing. It's a seamless sonic journey that just weaves together so well
this commentary is so well done yet so underrated, hope it reaches more recognition.
Every newer Abel fan has that one rainy night where they decide to give Kiss Land a shot, and fall in love with it. I had that. I haven't stopped listening to it since.
This just might've been the most thrilling video I've ever watched. Just incredible! Thanks for making this.
XO
I absolutely love the album wnd I thought I figured it out. But your idea or interpretation of The Weeknd talking to himself in Professional opened completely new doors for me. Thank you for this inspiration!
I loved Kissland since it originally released! It told a whole story!
3 videos in and i can comfortably say your one of my favorite music video essayist
no one loves this album more than me and i will stand on that forever
What an amazing job with that video bro. It's incredible.
Saw him in Houston for the kissland tour and that’s still the best concert I’ve been to.
Incredible take in an incredible video. You’ve earned this sub.

My favourite album of all time.
Kiss Land has some of my favorite Weeknd songs. Great vid! You’re getting a sub 🔥
I think the zero dislikes means we all agree Kiss Land is superior
My favourite album of his, more than the original three mixtapes. The emotions and themes behind kiss land are absolutely insane man. Always feel some type of way listening to it.
Kissland is my favourite The weeknd album ever and after that its starboy. Kissland has such dark uet grandiose themes. He sucks you into the world of an upcoming artist how this industry is so rewarding and big but yet so brutal heartless. My Fav album of all time 💚💚💚
You made me want to put Kissland on from this video… brilliant analysis
Kissland is my favorite weekend album, so crazy this project is slept on
kiss land will always be my 2nd favorite album , i love everything about it. i love the meaning behind it , it really is a masterpiece
