To give more context, in the last game (MK 11) Liu Kang fused with Raiden and took his power to defeat a crazy time god. After Fire God Liu Kang defeated them he rewrote the timeline to create a peaceful one that is in Mortal Kombat 1 (Liu Kang has definitely evolved to say the least haha)
