It will also allow more money to go to everything else, like player housing and other development around the arena

No new Arena! Smiths said renovation. Not sure what the plan will be. Smith said the plan will be to build a village next to arena. Nothing wrong with Delta center. Just spent 300M for new seats, scoreboard, clubs.
As a kid I watched several seasons of Golden Eagles hockey and didn’t have any issues. That was 30 years ago though and the Delta Center has gone through renovations since for more basketball oriented crowds. Here’s to hoping they build a new one.
Curious to their plan. The upper deck will still have seats where you won’t see the near goal. Unless their plan is to lengthen the area both upper and lower bowls. Interested to see the plan.
Rogers Centre was changing the arrangement of seats and going lower into the ground for a better view. What would have to happen at the Delta Center is different. It's an operation of adding space, they'd have to go deep into the ground to make the lower bowl wider and it may affect the upper bowl too. To took Seattle two years to do this recently and same the thing with Portland back in the 90s. I 100% believe it will end up being a new stadium. Edit: they might play at the maverick center during renovations
Name one other potential NHL expansion city that is being asked by the IOC to host back to back Winter Olympics. Salt Lake is committed to winter sports for the Long Haul. They have the finances, they have the government support, they have competent management, and they have the fan support. There is NO better Market for the NHL to expand into. Utah was the right choice. With just a teeny tiny bit of patience you will see that the Utah NHL team will have all of their needs met with facilities that live up to NHL standards.
@@georgehigh4723 nah according to Garry Bettman and Ryan Smith its 4000 obstructed seats and 12000 good seats. They planned to make it 17.5k hockey friendly seats over the next 2 years
The Jazz would stay at the delta center. The NBA and NHL want their teams to have their own arenas. That’s the huge issue with this move. Both teams need new arenas.
The Delta Center did not host hockey during the 2002 Olympics, they were held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City (which is a hockey specific arena).
Yup….obstruction city! What I dont get is they have to do something to this arena 2-3 Renovation….and the Yotes get that land and a brand new arena in about 3-4…why bother move the team then??? Just lose more money like they have been for 3-4 more years then make it happen in 2027. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
If you would’ve watched the press conference yesterday, you would know that they are not building a new arena. They want to keep have the NBA and NHL downtown and there is not land to do that. The plan is to do a MAJOR renovation of the current arena. The exterior of the building is also going to be completely redone and extended. The new entrance to the building will face east. It won’t even look recognizable. The renderings that were released a few weeks ago are indeed the current Delta center. They haven’t released the full plans yet, but I speculate that the upper bowl will be left in place while the lower bowl will be completely blown out and expanded underneath the lower bowl … it could actually end up being a very unique arena. That’s very good for both hockey and basketball. The lower bowl is completely below grade so this is definitely possible. I think what we’re going to end up with is a lower bowl that’s a completely different shapes than the upper bowl.
@@mattreedah That’s correct. A lot of people spewing BS fail to realize that when you put a 200 foot long hockey rink into a basketball designed arena, the entire upper bowl behind the goal is useless, because you CAN’T SEE THE GOAL BENEATH YOU!! I live in San Antonio. The Frost Bank (formerly AT&T) Center was built for the SA Spurs. We also had an AHL Hockey team, the Rampage. For Spurs games, it held over 18,000. For Rampage games, they collapsed the entire lower bowl behind the west goal, and didn’t sell seats in the upper bowl behind the west goal. In that configuration, seating was about 12,500. Perfectly fine for minor league hockey, but not for NHL. Without a MAJOR re-construction of the Delta Center, it will have the same problem Phoenix had with America West Arena where the Coyotes first played. AWA was and still is a basketball designed arena!
this you tube channel seems to look age as a decided factor for facility to get replaced, but as you already stated why a new arena is not the plan in Utah.
They're going to widen the footprint of the arena, tearing down the ends and rebuilding, completely renovating the exterior, plaza, and extending East. The street to the East will be removed, for example. The name will be Utah Hockey Club for year 1. They've narrowed down the team name to a handful. It'll likely be Mammoth, Yeti/Yetis, or Outlaws.
Hockey was not played there during the 2002 Winter Olympics. They played at the Maverick Center (then known as E center.) Delta was only used for ice skating, however, they of course had the same issues as mentioned here.
Still a huge upgrade over Mullet Arena, and it's not like they're going to be playing there that long. They're getting a new arena for the Jazz & Utah NHL team in the next few years.
9:31 Realistically, you'd need two separate ice arenas for the Olympics - one for hockey and one for figure skating. So keeping the Delta Center through 2034 with the potential new arena makes some sense in that regard.
If it’s only 12,000 seats and they’re planning on getting a new arena, I don’t understand why they don’t play at the Maverick Center. It’s 15 minutes from the Delta Center and it holds about the same amount of people but it doesn’t have the eye sore of the pushed up seats
It is weird that they built the arena for the 2002 winter Olympics, where it hosted the hockey tournament and figure skating finals, and they didn’t build something that had better ice viewing potential.
Not sure the exact plans but the gateway center is across the street from the Delta Center and was an entertainment district for the 2002 Olympics that’s rather died over the years. If they tear it down and build the new arena there, they could tear down the delta center and use that land as part of the new entertainment district along with any leftover land from the gateway
Olympic Hockey uses the international ice rink standard which calls for a wider rink than the NHL, so if they want to use it for Olympic Hockey they'll have to make room for a wider rink.
If they wanted a more viable arena there are other cities that should have been considered to relocate the Coyotes to and then go to Salt Lake City as an expansion after a proper arena is built. It is stupid that for Canada there are insane requirements to get a team and in the US there are virtually none other then the money.
Delta Center hosted figure skating and short track speed skating for the 2002 Olympics, so the obstructed views weren't as big of a deal. The Maverik Center, home of the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies, is where Olympic hockey was held.
The situation with hockey at the Delta Center mirrors the problems the NY Islanders had when they played their games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a few years: smaller capacity, obstructed views of the rink! I remember how many Islanders fans were angered about the bad seating and sightlines...
You can notice this is you watch the Figure Skating from the SLC Olympics, there were no endzone seats in the lower tier, only in the balcony. Key Arena in Seattle (Now Climate Pledge) was the same way. Not sure why any arena is made like this in the first place
Earth to Phil. Renovations don’t cost much. So it doesn’t matter if they renovate Delta Center while the New Arena is being built. For example the Rams renovated the LA Coliseum while Sofi Stadium was being built.
They should use the Delta Center for the figure skating and the short track speed skating events for the 2034 Winter Game. Just like they did with the Pacific Coliseum the former home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, when they used it for short track speed skating and figure skating during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games
On what to do w/ Delta Center after new arena: Keep it for Olympics plus, if/when the Coyotes come back I imagine they will also take back the Tuscon Roadrunners as their AHL team, leaving the Utah team without one. They just put a bunch of money into making Delta Center viable for hockey. Expand the AHL into the Delta center to act as Utah's AHL affiliate.
Yeah, we knew the Delta Center was a poor place to play hockey. The basketball sight lines are different than hockey sight lines. The point is that there is a plan going forward in Salt Lake City. The only thing for the NHL in Arizona was a bunch of questions.
They need to switch to Big Ice. The players are so fast, they need more room to skate. Start with one arena and eventually they'll all be converted. I don't care if it takes 10 years to get all arenas to Big Ice, it needs to be done.
The answer to your question is that if Smith keeps them in downtown Salt Lake and decides renovating the Delta center doesn't really work, it will be demolished and a new arena built in its place. That is probably the best solution. Either way, if renovating or demo and rebuild happens, neither the Jazz or hockey will be playing there for at least 2 yrs. I don't see how the Maverick center does not be used for hockey and the Jazz playing at the University of Utah, which they have done before. Don't know where you got 18+k for basketball but I believe for basketball the number is around 20.7k.
There probably is pressure to get as many seats since hockey depends on arena attendance more so than other pro sports. They may want to have 2 arenas available for the Winter Olympics.
And as a side note I think the Kings take the Frozen Fury game to Mexico in 2025. It’s a good vehicle to test the waters for a team (ask SLC and Vegas). Would be a good market to expand to. This is where being part owned by Phil Anschutz/AEG helps.
Utah Hockey Club sounds like a good permanent name. All of these other names are just copies of other places or weird. You can use Utah Hockey Club as the name of the team and have a mascot of something like a Yeti (Whatever a Yeti is) or some other creature.
They’ve got their work cut out as far as a renovation goes. I thought they had $900 million or some ungodly sum hoisted from the public for a new arena already? You can get an arena built in 24 months without having to pay premiums for materials. Anything short of that, the costs goes skyward. But 900 million?? Just put the shovels in the ground and design it while they’re building the foundation. Sheesh
Smith is being pressured and arm twisted by bureaucrats with short term goals in keeping them in downtown SLC. The only long term solution is to demo the Delta center and rebuild. A reconfigured expensive make over to just get 17k hockey seats will not be a long term solution and we will be right back to we need a new stadium. Hate to see the Delta Center go but in the end if keeping both teams downtown is the goal, it is the only way.
I remember Barclays Center's Hockey Configuration when I went to see the Islanders games there, It's was the same thing what the Coyotes dealt with in their early years where they playing out same arena as the Suns. The setup at the Delta Center is even worse that both ends of the ice surface are obstructed, unlike Footprint Center & Barclays Center both had one end of the ice surface was obstructed. One other problem of note with Barclays Center that needs to be known, The ice quality in that building was very poor and was difficult to maintain.
That stadium can be renovated to fit nhl hockey properly, however it would have to be closed. Why? Because they'd have to dig lower into the ground to make this thing fit like what they did in Seattle. So because of that theyll eventually say new arena. They approved money for the arena and a baseball stadium. Two billion dollars, one for each sport. Nhl jumped on the opportunity first before baseball could make a move. It will likely be a new arena unless there construction workers can guarantee to a renovation without interrupting the schedule. Edit: they'll like play at the Maverick Center during renovations
The Delta Center should do a complete renovation to better accommodate the new NHL Utah team. The Jazz hopefully will agree to make something happen now that it has a new indoor neighbor. I'm guessing that if there will be a renovation, it'll cost about (I'll just throw out a random number) $500M. I could be wrong and it may cost more than that. If I'm wrong, do share your opinions peeps.
One of the reasons Hartford moved to NC was because the Hartford Civic Center was considered too small at just under 16,000. The NHL is moving a team from a 4,000 seat arena to a 14,000 seat arena with promises to upgrade this facility to a number close to where the XL Center in Hartford is today. The contradictions are beyond belief.
Hartford metro area is LOSING population and isn't even in the top 30 US metro areas in population already. Has a microscopic TV market broadcast area and their tiny facility got outnumbered by Bruins and Rangers fans whenever they played those teams in the 90s.

I just can’t believe the coyotes moved to Utah and there’s a chance there is a state of the art arena built in Phoenix before one is built in Utah… the NHL might end up really regretting moving the team.
Ryan Smith said at his presser that they plan to renovate and *NOT* build a new arena. He seemed pretty adamant about that and wanted to focus more on the neighborhood around the arena. He seemed to not be concerned at all about renovating versus building a totally new building because the new arena site would not be in the downtown area where he wants to keep the arena for both the Jazz/hockey team AND the Olympics, should they win that bid.
I believe Smith knows better than that and renovating the Delta center will not work long term.. He has to appease or feels obligated to appease a bunch of bureaucrats that only care he stay in Salt Lake city. We need a new arena and that is the reality. 17k will not cut it and we all know it. If he feels they should stay in downtown Salt Lake the long term solution is to just demo the Delta center and rebuild.
No. The last thing the NHL needs to do is go to Quebec. An NHL team in Quebec isn't going to do anything to grow the NHL's overall revenue in the long term. Hockey is a business, and Quebec is a terrible business decision. As much as people moan about teams in Nashville, Tampa, Dallas and Vegas, those teams have done a great job in dramatically growing the NHL's overall fanbase and the overall revenue. SLC is a much better option. They have an owner who actively engaged the NHL and dropped a billion dollars, they're hosting the Olympics for the 2nd time, and having a team there is going to create hundreds of thousands of new NHL fans in an area of the continent that doesn't have NHL coverage.
Winnipeg's GM had to publicly call fans out for not showing up last year. They're not moving anybody up to canada any time soon. Candian tv viewership during the playoffs was down by more than half this year,
Why not just build a new arena if they are going to spend that much rennovating an arena over 30 years old. Its not like an MSG situation where you have no room to build a new arena and you are forced to make due by soending a lot of money on renovations.
That Delta Arena hockey configuration eliminates the high priced ice level seats near the boards. So only 12,000 seat while have fewer high priced seats. Great economics??? The arena will feel empty like during Covid and the crowds will barely be heard.
It seems they aren’t building a new arena and putting hundreds of millions into the Delta Center renovation to accommodate the NHL and NBA teams. Delta Center is in a great location which they understand and just going to make the arena NHL ready and much better. When done I’m sure will be great for many years
The State of Utah will be pitching in on this renovation due to its efforts to prepare for the 2034 Winter Olympics. So, Ryan Smith is getting this franchise at the right time.
Why didn't Utah have a name at the start of the season? In every other instance when a team relocated, they either took the same name from their previous location or had a new name by the start of the first season after relocation. I think they could have used Utah Coyotes, since coyotes are common in Utah as well as Arizona.

@@Utonian21FWIW, it was originally a Canadian team but yes, as a Canadian I agree that some Canadian fans are blowing this way out of proportion.
@@keithck3720 Ok, true, I completely forgot that tbh (Im new to Hockey) regardless, Winnipeg lost them, now Arizona did.
No other potential owner was pushing as hard as Ryan Smith for this team. I wish people could just be happy for Utah, lol
Actually I heard him say something different. He said they would further investigate the possibility if it is even feasible to modify the Delta Center. My hunch is the cost to just add 3 maybe 4k seats isn't worth it and a 17k outcome will be obsolete within 5 years. Smith seems to feel an obligation to appease the bureaucrats only interested in renovating the area and keeping the teams in downtown Salt Lake. I don't believe Smith ever even originally had any thoughts or plans to modify the Delta Center, IMO.
Also, they’re not debating the name. It’s going to be Yeti. The issue is having jerseys and merch ready to roll out. My guess is they will try for XMas break next season but I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen till fall 2025.
Watch the press conference Ginger. The new arena is not going to happen. Delta Center renovation is the future. They are staying downtown.
This guy doesn't do basic ressearch
He makes video that takes an hour total.
No new Arena! Smiths said renovation. Not sure what the plan will be. Smith said the plan will be to build a village next to arena. Nothing wrong with Delta center. Just spent 300M for new seats, scoreboard, clubs.
Dude talks about a new arena and shows a picture of Provo while talking about it. I would go to a local source to get your info.
Smith would totaly move the teams to Provo if he could get away with it. Guy's the #1 BYU booster.
The owner said they will be making renovations to the Delta Center instead of building a new arena.
As a kid I watched several seasons of Golden Eagles hockey and didn’t have any issues. That was 30 years ago though and the Delta Center has gone through renovations since for more basketball oriented crowds. Here’s to hoping they build a new one.
Kinda strange why the video ended w/ a shot of downtown Ogden, Utah. -- now, I'm confused.
The Blue Jays just demolished, and rebuilt the entire lower bowl of the Rogers Centre in 5 months. How could they not do the same at the Delta Center?
I will believe it when I see it.
The capacity is 12 000 for HOCKEY FRIENDLY seats, but there's 4000 more seats with obstructed view. They said it during the press conference!
I think half are obstructed
@@georgehigh4723 nah according to Garry Bettman and Ryan Smith its 4000 obstructed seats and 12000 good seats. They planned to make it 17.5k hockey friendly seats over the next 2 years
The Jazz would stay at the delta center. The NBA and NHL want their teams to have their own arenas. That’s the huge issue with this move. Both teams need new arenas.
The Delta Center did not host hockey during the 2002 Olympics, they were held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City (which is a hockey specific arena).
No one is confused but you. They were super clear on how they would be approaching this in the press conference.
This is the same guy who said the NBA play in was "too confusing" last year
This looks exactly like America West Arena (now Footprint Center) in Phoenix, the original arena the Coyotes played in 😂
Yup….obstruction city!
@@ericbowers1620 Couldn't stay in Mullett that long
Ryan Smith has said they are renovating one side of the arena this off season and the other half on the next off season
The obstructed view seats are in the upper bowl. The lower bowl seats have no room to come out
@@mattreedah That’s correct.
Can you link to these renderings?
this you tube channel seems to look age as a decided factor for facility to get replaced, but as you already stated why a new arena is not the plan in Utah.
900 million dollar renovation. 2 year renovation. They discussed this.
Maybe do basic research. $2 billion in State commitments (already passed) to build a new arena and a baseball stadium.
The Delta Center was made for basketball
That’s not worth that just make a new arena.
no where downtown to put it and part of them coming here was them staying downtown
better than the mullett
i thought they earmarked 900 million dollars for a new NHL / NBA arena
Still a huge upgrade over Mullet Arena, and it's not like they're going to be playing there that long. They're getting a new arena for the Jazz & Utah NHL team in the next few years.
The new stadium is planned to open in time for the Olympics in 2034. So Ryan Smith has already pulled a fast one on the NHL.
The reason why they dont want to build a new arena is because nobody wants to leave downtown.
Didn't they have money approved for a new arena?
Not being built till later next year
theres money spproved it can be used to convert or build new
The other factor is that the nhl basically pushed out a bad owner too
9:31 Realistically, you'd need two separate ice arenas for the Olympics - one for hockey and one for figure skating.
Smith doesn't own the Maverik Center and get ALL the revenue it generates. They'd be paying rent and losing out on profit, that's the reason.
It is weird that they built the arena for the 2002 winter Olympics, where it hosted the hockey tournament and figure skating finals, and they didn’t build something that had better ice viewing potential.
It opened in 1991, long before the Olympics, and as a basketball arena. It didn't host hockey during the Olympics, just figure skating.
It was built for the Utah Jazz and the Jazz only. No one cares about hockey.
The old homeless shelter killed The Gateway. Was such a shame.
Oh god they need to fix that arena asap. Olympic rinks are larger but they don’t mind playing on an NHL six rink if needed like 2010
Good Luck one problem sent from Arizona to Utah. Sports can be overrated. Keep price of tickets down for fans. Or fans needs to boycott all sports.
RIP arizona coyotes
The plan is to renovate to accommodate both. Ryan Smith has said its at 16,500 for hockey as of now
500 million Reno sounds insane, you would think that could a long way to purchase a new building
You can’t see the net when you sit behind the goal. You see the blue line when you look down.
Yeah, we knew the Delta Center was a poor place to play hockey. The basketball sight lines are different than hockey sight lines.
The point is that there is a plan going forward in Salt Lake City. The only thing for the NHL in Arizona was a bunch of questions.
The only bad thing in AZ was terrible ownership for the last two decades.
The only reason it makes sense in a way for renovations, is for the Winter Olympics
Freaking Déjà vu all over again. The Coyotes first year in the old America West arena had a bunch of obstructed view seating as well.
No. That’s incorrect. It seats 16,000 with 12,000 being unobstructed.
This move reeked of desperation. Shoving them into an arena where many seats can’t even see all the ice is a recipe for disaster.
Wow gonna add 5,000 seats to 12,000 to make it 17,000 set arena. Golden eagle days they put up seats behind the removed section in one end.
There probably is pressure to get as many seats since hockey depends on arena attendance more so than other pro sports. They may want to have 2 arenas available for the Winter Olympics.
You didn''t watch the press conference. We are not getting a new arena. There updating Delta Center.
They're gonna renovate short term and build a new stadium long term
They’ve got their work cut out as far as a renovation goes. I thought they had $900 million or some ungodly sum hoisted from the public for a new arena already? You can get an arena built in 24 months without having to pay premiums for materials. Anything short of that, the costs goes skyward. But 900 million?? Just put the shovels in the ground and design it while they’re building the foundation. Sheesh
The 900 million will be coming from tourists not the people here
@@jeron3966
Nope.
It will be an increase on sales tax to SLC residents.
The problem is that lawmakers want the teams to remain in downtown, and there's currently no viable property downtown to build a new arena
@@Utonian21 they’re looking at Glendale area it’s still technically part of downtown
Mullets Ice was some of the best :)
Atlanta has shown the NHL twice that the fans will not show up.
I think you renovate the Delta Center and build a new arena as if they do get the Olympics you need more than one arena, Just a thought!
When the renovations are done, the arena will have a capacity of 17.5k. That's more than enough for Hockey, imo. It's not the NFL, (or even MLB) lol
Hartford metro area is LOSING population and isn't even in the top 30 US metro areas in population already. Has a microscopic TV market broadcast area and their tiny facility got outnumbered by Bruins and Rangers fans whenever they played those teams in the 90s.
That was just what ownership said to get out of Hartford lol
@@fatzotv Karamanos said a lot of things but the building and the funding of a new building with concessions more team friendly were a major bone of contention in the negotiations. Problem was, every time benchmarks were close to being met or were met, he wanted more and the State had enough.
@@HoshizakiYoshimasa My point is the NHL wants public money to fund their private operations-- to do this they rant about the facilities knowing the knee jerk reaction from many will be to give them whatever they want. These massively expensive facilities should not be funded by states and municipalities if the owners are going to demand all or most of the associated revenue from the buildings.
Would having glassed in executive suites behind the nets work so no netting is needed? A wall of suites with not netting obscuring the view?
I could be wrong but my understanding after watching the press conference they're not building a whole new arena they're just going renovate the whole arena the plans that were going to be apart of the new arena will be added to the delta center
Why are people acting like it hasn’t been know since this was still a rumor that this version of the delta center is temporary
It's mind boggling that they would take a billion dollar idea and such a huge change for an organization and the league and just rush it through with an arena like this. Honestly if I lived in Utah I would rather hear I'm getting a team in a year or two that will have a state of the art facility that will impress the whole league. But delaying gratification isn't cool anymore.
if this is the stadium they're going to play in i don't see why the coyotes owner didn't pay to renovate Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and leave the team in AZ
12,000 is more then enough for hockey in Utah at least it will appear to be full, Bettman can hail great success
This is still better then playing in a shit college arena 😂
The Mullet was the best place to watch a NHL game and I have been to a few of them
It was a super cool place…but I doubt youve ever been there. All AZ truly needs is a true owner not some POS from Cali.
Delta center is easily top 5 arena in NBA , for all you that will disagree have you been there ? I have and several other newer arenas in the league , the way they built it there’s not too many bad seats and it looks great inside and out
People never learned on what happen with the Islander fiasco when they moved to Brooklyn. MOVE THE YOTES TO QUEBEC CITY!!! Dont give a Bull about the small market or big market. Small markets can go a long way. If make a winning team, PEOPLE COME
Bring back the WHA. Chicago Cougars.
I just can’t believe the coyotes moved to Utah and there’s a chance there is a state of the art arena built in Phoenix before one is built in Utah… the NHL might end up really regretting moving the team.
It doesn't make sense to move a team from one rink that doesn't work to another rink that doesn't work. This is more arena drama.
Quebec City literally has a beautiful 18,000 capacity stadium for their QMJHL team. This is absurd, move the team to Quebec City
I can't continue to watch this. You're facts are severely skewed
It seems they aren’t building a new arena and putting hundreds of millions into the Delta Center renovation to accommodate the NHL and NBA teams. Delta Center is in a great location which they understand and just going to make the arena NHL ready and much better. When done I’m sure will be great for many years
They could temporarily play at Maverik?
The State of Utah will be pitching in on this renovation due to its efforts to prepare for the 2034 Winter Olympics. So, Ryan Smith is getting this franchise at the right time.
Why didn't Utah have a name at the start of the season? In every other instance when a team relocated, they either took the same name from their previous location or had a new name by the start of the first season after relocation.
I think they could have used Utah Coyotes, since coyotes are common in Utah as well as Arizona.
Be easier probably but costs more money Ryan Smith has money build new arena in same location or near by make it for both sports like so many do. Play in Delta Center till new stadium ready. This reminds me of Barclay's in Brooklyn was liker that for hockey and failed for Islanders not saying happen here. Can do minor stuff to adjust for it if can't get new arena build quickly
