Burlington Northern's Racetrack - The E-units 1980s & 90s
Camera of Roger A. Holmes
Beginning in 1983 our video cameras capture Burlington Northern's E units in suburban service between Chicago's Union Station and Aurora plus other locations in between. Also included is a mix of freights along the triple track as well as Amtrak from this time period.
Prevalent is Amtrak footage mixed in with the BN suburban trains shot from Roosevelt Road just south of Union Station. During the busiest of the afternoon rush hour BN suburban trains were scheduled to depart every 4 minutes!
Coverage ends on August 30, 1992 with the Farewell to the BN E Unit excursion. Chicago Union Station footage and footage shot from the cab was taken by the late Mark Singer of Aurora to whom this video is dedicated.

Those E units were beauties
Man, I wish I could’ve lived in this time. Cab rides, Conrail, Amtrak F40’s, B&LE, and the DMIR
brings back memories...my father HL CALAY was a trainman-conductor here from 1991-1995.....CNW from 1980 to 1991 and before that the Rock Island....i never got to ride the Es, but did ride on the Metra locomotives, and the C30-7s.....its funny, i rode 1 C30 in 1993....in return rode the same C30 on America Latina Logistica in 2014 as a meter locomotive...
Should have known you guys had a UA-cam channel, just subbed, love you guys' videos, restoration on that old footage is top notch, take care!
Thanks very much for the sub and for your support Randall!
I need more trains. I cannot get enough of theme.
Same!
America built some truly beautiful locomotives.
Terrific video of BN E9s running on the "racetrack" back in the day. Also great anti-vaping ads, just too many of 'em!
Great video. Captured the feel of the times. Worked there in the 80’s, and they were the best part of my career.
Very Nice!
BN are the best ever. I really enjoyed them!
I wish I had been alive when BN was still a RR its always been my favorite, i wont tell you how old i am but i was born after 2005
the only 2 notable catches
one of 2 Amtrak F69PHAC locomotives 3:22
BN 9908 (preserved and operational) 6:13
I noticed there not many flat wheels or bad bearings back then. Now days, most trains it sound like a junk yard rolling by.
1:16
Hancock air whistle?
I believe all of the BN E8's were former CB&Q's
They are E9AMs
8-)
Needs narration.
