- In this video i show you how to sync pocket operators to groove boxes, drum machines, synths, whatever it may be that you have. As long as it has a PAN option it should work!
I love these pocket operators by teenage engineering. They're so powerful!

Ricky you are a genius I love you bro! I took this information and applied it to a soft synth on my ipad which simulates a modular synth. I added 2 panning modules and created a loud beep sending to the left and connected it to the sequencer. Long story short, your advice let me sync my tablet to my pocket operators flawlessly! Thanks my dude! Keep making that magic!
Do please provide the long version mate. I'm trying to do the same sync as you. ✌️
I hooked op the po-speak to the circuit like this and it works like a charm
Very very cool thanks im having so much fun with this !!!
dude you're such a g, this is why ive been watching all your videos. All this Novation Circuit is really something I need to get.
Awesome! Thanks for the idea. Inspired by your video, I went and sampled the sync signal into Garageband (yes, I'm a beginner), made a loop out of it and put it on the left channel. Now my PO's sync beautifully with it!
Not just helpful, but actually entertaining in the offbeat way you intended it to be ✌️
Enrique you're awesome. I just used this method to sync VCV Rack on my Mac with my PO-33 using just a stereo mini cable out the headphone jack.
This was super dope, thank you. Thinking about doing something similiar with my mpc live and the po
Awesome, thanks for the trick!
Been looking to do exactly this for a long time: sync my Novation Circuit to my PO-12. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks Ricky. Another way to clock the PO would be to use a stereo to 2 mono 1/8th inch jack Y-splitter and push a loud low freq signal (kick, low tom etc) via the R mono channel.
Dude, this is amazing! You've created your own sync signal.
Lord I wish I knew what it was, as I could load it onto my BOSS RC-3 looper and then sync a PO to it!
Good one..thanks mate. Successfully Ableton linked all my apps to po👍🏻. I used audio bus to pan all the apps.
Great content. Love the quality of sound and video.
Yes! This is sick!!! The monstrosity I've created from watching this is amazing 🤟🥴🤟
Awesome! This works great with my Digitone Keys because I can use the individual track outs to send the sync. Took a minute to dial in the right tone but now it works great. Thank you for this!
mhh. Cool! Thanks. Going to try this out with my po33 and boss rc 505 mk2 now.
You saved my life!
Man u always so clear speaking!
Big thanks form Italy
Ohh man..Im going to buy some pocket operators now and include it in my work flow. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated !
Let me know how it goes!
Can you please make a video showing how to sync drumbrute with pocket operators??
Gonna have to try syncing the p.o to the Yamaha DJ x
They're the coolest lil gadgets
Rather than using SY4 and panning the click track all the way to the left, why not use SY2 (see www.soundtech.co.uk/music-retail/teenageengineering/news/pocket-operator-sync-modes), which makes the PO listen for the clicks on both left and right (and thereby not pass them through to the PO's audio out)?
Yeah, all the time you're not planning to sample anything anyway, might as well use SY2 (sync in/stereo out). For most other purposes, SY4 with a carefully labeled 2x mono adapter on the input is definitely the way to go.
I'd be super grateful if you could show us with an MPC One Ricky ;)
Finally a method the works - well, 95% of the time. sometimes ist skips a step. whatever- good enough for me!
So... In principle I can probably trigger a volca kick from one of the individual outs on my MPC... right?
Bro how do you know all of this? I'm very amazed by the amount of knowledge you have. Master please teach me lol sorry haha but this would work with a UNO Drum right?
@@kevinj9942 Nice. Always a Richard when u need one.
So if I use one of the Mpc 2000xl multiple outs I can achieve the same result right?
THIS IS SO COOL!
I’m trying to sync my Roland TB-03 with my Tonic and I just can’t work out what goes where. Any ideas?
Tried everything, doesn't work. You need a CV output in order to trigger it. Drumbrutes go well with POs and you can then use MIDI to sync your TB03 with DB and PO.
Thanks for the video. It shows some basic sync example.
I recently tried syncing the po12 to the korg volca modular & while I got them to sync there was still some issue of the volca modular & po12 not starting from one button push. Example- both devices needed to be started by pushing their own start buttons then they would stay locked in sync.
It'd be much nicer to just push the master units start button & have the slave unit automatically start & stay in sync. 🤔
Can this also be achieved with a digitakt?
Thanks for the amazing videos of your channel, they are very instructive, good job bro! a question can the PO be synced with a roland jdxi?
Thanks! I’ll try this.. i’ve been simpler way of syncing my po into my setup.
simple and great job
Dude ur the best circuit player
haha, I've had it since day 1!
Thanks for the tip...i was wondering how this is done without a MIDI input
I guess it will be easier with a "sync out" line, right?
I followed every step using the same devices, but why is my PO sequencer going out of whack? My PO Rhythm is not holding its rhythm when syncing with my Circuit.
Thanks. Really useful tips there.)
this is SO helpful omg
Amazing video. I remember thinking about it but what i didnt realized back was the panning part. Anyway thank you so much for this tuto. Keep it up :)
I'm trying to sync Nano loop on Android with my PO-12 and I'm having no luck. I am passing through a USB C to 3.5mm adaptor, I don't think that's the issue, just giving a better overall description of my setup. I've set up a sequence similar to yours (beat on 1, 2, 3, 4), and the Pocket Operator is set to SY4. Is it a matter of just not finding the right sound for the click track to sync to?
I’m using a DFAM So I’m guessing this wouldn’t work since it’s mono?
Is this the same sync technique for the ko2? Or not since it has midi
very cool rythms---thanks for these great tips!
Thank youuuu
Hy Ricky,
I've got also a couple of Pocket Operators and find they're really cool and serious instruments.
So you told that, when you want to sync you need to be able to pan the "click" you created that the PO can follow up the Beat.
Now to my question:
I still have a old Zoom RythmTrak223 at home, which is also running by batteries. So it would fit perfectly into this "studio to go" thinking.
But, wen I connect the Audio to from the Zoom (from AUX to AUX) i dont know how to sync. The PO is receiving a signal but its not in sync. Maybe you have an idea how get this work together?
Or maybe someone tried the same thing and can give me tip? It would be so cool to get the Zoom Drum Computer work with the PO, cause it has many of very good drum sounds on it.
Thanks man👊🏼👊🏼
So can I do this with my Boss770? It doesn’t have a sync but has midi, just connect it through the headphone?
thank you Enrique been trying this different ways too to sync properly but you sir nailed it :)
Kassian! I'm gla you found the video helpful. Are you also syncing it to a circuit?
yes going through the novation circuit and the recently added NZ deluge groove box :)
nice tutorial man!
Is there a way to use the pocket operator as a drum machine and control each sample separately?
Cool find. The fiddling I've done with a more basic monosynth (i.e. microbrute) still have a hard time, though. Not sure if it's the register ir simply the fact that you can't pan anything. In order to get the MB to move the sequencer on the PO, you have to really slow down the MB sequencer. Anyways, good video for other types of devices!
How did you get it to work, im really struggling
Man this is insane!! Thank you
Great video's bro and love the pocket operator related vids so thumbs up!!!
thanks man! i really appreciate that.
You,sir, just made my day.
Great work, keep the good vids coming. I always enjoy watching them. Maybe you could do a Circuit and Pocket Operator Jam Video ^^
Very cool! can you sync anything also to po-33?
genious! thank you!
Anyone have success syncing PO with the Nintendo DS-10? I’m not sure if the sound it makes is too low or if I just can’t dial in a sound the PO can pick up.
Genius! Thanks man 👍
Your vids are so helpful.
Could you also use the metronome if it as a separate output?
does the sound quality end up being ok after running through the pocket operator?
Hey Jesse, surprisingly yeah. It sounds like it has a little bit of a compression to it which ends up almost gluing circuit together with the pocket operator in a nice way!
theres no way to do this on a digitakt as a host right? :'(
Do you think I could do this with an mpc2xl?
Is there an option to sync it with the maschine mk3?
Im trying to sync them with logic so when the audio from the po starts playing, that's when logic will begin recording (trimming the beginning and the end of of the transients is very repetitive)
Having trouble connecting my PO33 to my audio interface (Komplete audio 6) so I can hear it through my monitors? Iv tried a 1.8” jack to twin 1.4” jacks and also twin RCA but no sound?
Make sure whatever software you are using to record with is set to "monitor" or something like "monitor sound" or "monitor mode"
Can you use it with the SP 404?
That's what I came here for! :)
Anyone know if by doing this, it messes up the swing on the PO? Or will the swing stay the same?
You can adjust the swing by holding play down letting the sequence run through in edit mode.
Thist can work in the arturia minibrute?
Thumbs Up!
It's still a cool idea even though filter doesn't work 😅 But Midiclock to CV somehow seems more stable 🤔
Oh it's probably way more stable that way! this was just a fun work around :)
very nice, cant wait to get a pocket operator :)
Genius
Awesome
Sick!
Hi , I’m trying to do this on my QY70 but I’m confused as to where to put the notes on the step sequencer to trigger the PO12 ,I have managed to get it to play just not in time ,any ideas or help is greatly appreciated
This is why i need a QY70.. Wish i had one! :(
@@RickyTinez I managed to work it out, bass drum on track one, resonance and filter up. Step sequence record one bar with a beat on every other step. Works great now
@@RickyTinez sometimes you see 3 or 4 on ebay but most of the year there is none. Its a useful old mini midi workstation
Very crafty .
👍🤖✋
And vice versa?
Dude ur a freakin mad scientist! Love this!
TIP: It took me a while to get it... You have to push the Circuit's volume almost to the max for the PO-* to get the signal. I normally keep the volume lower on the Circuit cause I take care of the different levels on my mixer.
Ricky, thank you so much for your amazing work!
Which wires do I need to hook it up to my audio interface?
1/8th out of the headphone to the input of your audio interface. not sure which you have, but youmight need to make your 1/8th cable into a 1/4th with an adapter at the end before it goes in.
Enrique Martinez Music I have the Apollo mk2 so how I would I hook it up ?
the same way i mentioned. headphone out with an 1/8th cable to a 1/4 dual mono cable
hey i have an issue maybe you can help, really useful content by the way.
Im trying to do this process of synchronization with a PO-32tonic to a rolandTR8s/ im connecting the aux through the input from the PO-32 to the TRIGGER out of the RolandTR8s.
Everything goes good with the clock signal and response form the pocket operator. But the thing is that thepocket operator goes WAY faster bpm wise than the RolandTR8S
Please help
The last thing to do in order to sync up my live set and be really happy.//
did u figured that out ? i am going trough the same :/
@@coredenoir2405 yo im here to save u.... on the tr8s press CC & RC... this will bring up the trigger out clock menu.... when u have the PO connected and running trying to sync the pocket goes faster because on the trigger out menu pressing CC&RC at the same time you will see all the steps of the TR8s LIT. this means instead you have to only lit up 8th notes so these are steps: 1-3-5-7-9-11-13-15 then press syn2 on the PO and start the sequence and everything should be matched
gary the snail beat
mine just plain doesn't work lol i can't get it to sync from literally anything i have access to
nvm i got it but i had to literally record my pocket operator's own sync signal and play it back to it. even the app that's designed specifically to sync pocket operators didn't work
is it possible to sync this with the Behringer neutron or any other hardware synths?
mmmm, does the Neutron have a sequencer? If it does, does it have an analog clock output? You could use that signal if it does have one.
It doesn't have a sequencer, but i have a key step so I'll just run both the neutron and the po-12 through the key steps internal clock, i think it'll work
@@avenlanemusic did it work? i've been thinking of buying a po-12 and wondering if i can sync it to my neutron/keystep setup
lo pablo yes I just connected the sync output of the keystep to the po-12 and it worked perfectly
@@avenlanemusic awesome, thanks for the reply !
Very cool I have to try this tomorrow once my batteries charge.
Dope vid as usual....and no I’m not buying that analog percussion module......maybe
Max Martinez 😂😂 buy it... so good to meet you man!
likewise my friend. Let's stay in touch
I'm having a little trouble getting this to work properly with my Tonic, what are you all using to get consistent triggers?
Hey Simon, I ended up using a woodblock sound but it might even be best to find a “click” specifically for syncing. I’ve been able to find and download that sound from somewhere I just can’t remember where.
Enrique Martinez hey thanks for getting back to me. I ended up just using sync mode 1 and recording the POs own sync output impulse. using that in my DAW with a sampler VST I can trigger the PO at a projects clock rate using midi tracks. I need to choose and buy a groovebox for a live rig that can play this out of an extra channel, but this will do for the time being. If you have a groovebox recommendation that can output more than two channels and is less that £750 I will welcome it. Otherwise I'm going to have to make one using a Bela kit from www.bela.io
@@sickboi11111 hmmmm did u end up doing any good stuff with bela ? been looking at that board for some time :)
@@coredenoir2405 Yeah I got the sync control running with the Bela for this project, and I ended up getting an OT. Another cool project I'd like to do is to set Bela up as a midi receiver from the OT and have that flexibly morph a sync signal sent out of Bela and to my PO. You could easily build all kinds of cool synth and effects stuff out of Bela pretty quickly and easily because its got a great scope/ide/support/dev platform.
I also made a guitar effects pedal out of my Bela with some custom stripboard circuits. Now they added a tutorial series I think its a great time to invest in a Bela if you are interested in that kind of stuff! Another great project I supported on Kickstarter recently is the Daisy from Electrosmith, which is a bit cheaper but doesn't quite have the cushy surrounding extras that make the Bela so good (the daisy is also not out yet so I can't say its as reliable or easy to work with yet).
Doesn't work with Roland TR6s
Tried this tonight as got it working very cool. Also I've the bs2 (looped midi) had that hooked up too on ch10 Oct 1 so I could play drums from the keyboard found that the arpeggiater on random can make some cool random drum beats just by pressing cdef with leg and latch on seq 1. But it was cooler when I added 4 samples from a song to the circuit and let it do a random jam while I went back to ch2 and turned the PO-20 back on. Also D (drum2) and turning lfo1 on cha 10 seems to change the sample (flip), sounds crazy if you mix both bs2 and circuit/po audio.
Hey Enrique, this is awesome! I got a po33 and I want to sync my Roland SPD SX with the ko. I just sent you an IG msg. Thanks dude! :)
Very good, but can the PO-12 continue to play when the drum machine is stopped ?
Dude!
I just bought the uno synth and am wondering can I sync it up like this to my Po?
where you able to?
Now that is the ultimate in tinkering !! .. did you set out to attempt this from the start or was it a happy accident ??
Had the idea in my head, i did something similar to my eurorack when i needed to sync it to Ableton utilizing a sharp sound out of a designated output to trigger and reset the eurorack sequencer.
What is the connection if i'm adding effects to my synth?
1/8th stereo or mono input
@@RickyTinez Thank you, but i don't think I formulated my question correctly, I have a Minilogue with some effects, and I want to add this PO-12 so I can play the synth at the same time, and I don't want the effects to work on the PO, only on the synthesizer, what can I do? do I need an audio interface with 2 instruments inputs?
An interface with at least two audio inputs would definitely be the easiest solution. You can run audio through the pocket operator and out the other side but I don't think it would work the way you'd want.
@@RickyTinez Thanks! So if I do this technique, the PO cannot be SYNC in real time with the synth right?
It doesnt work for me
Hell yeahhh
