- When Charles Smith was being evaluated by teams for the NBA draft, he was described as a complete big man with the versatility to play the Power forward and center, and had guard like traits that rose his expectation to expand his game and be effective in other positions as well. In his prime there was nothing like him. He’d sprint down the floor on fast breaks at Pittsburg for slams that wowed everyone including his coaches that he could beat even the guards up the floor and in one quick leap he was in the mouth of the rim. He didn’t struggle to shoot the ball from the field or free-throw line like typical bigs of the time, instead had a guard like form that hit the net smooth and opened up his game to being even more of a unicorn… potentially. I say that because Charles Smith was one of those unicorns that didn’t amount to what his potential suggested, even though I wouldn’t necessarily call him an NBA bust. He was a McDonald’s all American, Parade all American, conference player of the year in 1988 and left as the school’s all time leading scorer. My pops is one of those older knick fans and he hated Charles until a book came out about the 90s knicks detailing the truth about him playing the 3. Lots of OG fans hate him and thats why he’s one of the few knick alum that don’t come to MSG today…

Charles Smith was a good person. He was the one to bring computers to underprivileged urban schools in his area in the early 90s. He is treated like Bill Buckner was treated in the 80s for a singular play.

I remember getting his autograph as a kid, after the finals they had against the Rockets. I was sitting outside a facility where the Knicks practice and he came out. He was the first to come out and was having trouble finding a pen. And then almost all the other players started coming out. I started looking around and he got mad and said "Do you want the autograph or not?" I had a lot of sympathy for him, even as a kid. That infamous play where he couldn't score under the basket against the Bulls, was clearly an "over the back" foul. Today it wouldn't be, but that is how they called it back then.
I doubt the autographs would be worth anything today, but that interaction stuck with me (that and Patrick Ewing's old worn limo). I felt like I got an info dump just from that little interaction, how much stress he was under, the competitiveness of the NBA, the bitterness around how he was being portrayed in the media around that time in New York.
I also got to play against Patrick Ewing's son in a pick up game who was a couple years younger than me and the same height. I could tell he was hungry to get better and play as many different people as he could just from that brief interaction. I think they stifled his development not letting him interact with different types of kids because he definitely had the talent early on.
As a Knicks fan I always feel bad for Charles Smith, he had that embarrassing play and people act like he's the worst player of all time.
as a Bulls fan, the Charles Smith play may be my favorite as they were completing a comeback from being down 0-2 in the series; finishing with their top 3 players playing elite defense like they always did... fax!!!
Charles knew that the fix was in.
Smith was one of the first stretch forwards…between him Oakley, Mason and Ewing they gave all the bulls big men trouble…he was deadly in the mid range and could hit any shot on the court
Stunted Growth should do a story on UNLV’s point guard Anderson Hunt. He was an absolute beast with the Running Rebels. Why he didn’t make the pros is an absolute mystery to me.

I remember watching that series against the Bulls. That game definitely stuck with him. He was swarmed down there in hindsight by three of the leagues best defenders. They should’ve taken Oak out at the 4 because Smith was clearly more talented but Oak was beloved in NY..
Smith was cool, but he was a powerless power forward. He was definitely more of a 3.

Most of the blame goes to Pat Riley. He wanted to reconstruct Charles Smith as a small forward instead of keeping him as a natural power forward/center. Riley thought he could make Smith as another James Worthy in NY, but it was a major mistake.
Smith had trouble guarding against wing players and smaller guards because of bad knees.

He was an athletic defender & finisher at the rim, There were too many power forwards on those 93 & 94 knick squads for Smith to be able to play his natural position at power forward, i think a better situation for him coulda been in Atlanta playing along side Dominique & Willis, him getting blocked 4 times in a row in that game 5 playoff against the bulls I think hurt his reputation as a player as well

Only thing I have to say is that Pitt panthers team and Georgetown used to goto war in the old big east some of the best basketball I ever seen “Big Monday” on espn was like the NBA finals every Monday night

He was unlucky because this one in 1993 against the Bulls is one of the best defense ever in the game of Basketball.
Was playing out of position , if he stayed in the western conference he would have been a perennial all star at PF and some center. Pat Riley did him no favors playing him at SF
JT, let's get it! He was a unanimous 5 star recruit. At 6'10" this guy was ranked the #1 overall recruit for the 2020 class his sophomore year in high school. He was selected for the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic teams but couldn't actually suit up due to COVID canceling both games. He forwent his college eligibility and joined the G-League Ignite. Since then he has seen limited time in the league for a Wizards team that could use as much help as possible. Why is he struggling? Used to follow the Clippers and go to some games (as well as those infamous lottery draft parties EVERY YEAR at one of those rooms at the Sports Arena). Smith was a good pick and really put up some numbers in those first few years including his rookie year. Clippers had some good forwards in Manning, Smith, and Ken Norman. Gary Grant was the starting guard I think or Garrick but when Danny Ferry was picked and he went to Italy the best thing that could have happened for the Clippers was that Ron Harper trade. Harper was exactly what the Clippers needed. He was the leader right away and they started going on a run but the Clippers curse happened as always and down went Harper with an ACL and I think Manning had a second ACL later. As Vic the Brick had on one of his broadcasts, if you re-arrange CLIPPERS you can spell CRIPPLES. I've always hoped they'd change their name. They should when they move into the new arena. It's not like there's a grand history and tradition as the Clippers. Mostly a lot of misery. Give them a more LA based name. Bill Simmons had a couple cool ones year ago with the Hollywood Knights or Hollywood Blockbusters. I know they're in Inglewood but close enough.
I blame John Starks for that horrible game 7 in the finals more than I do Charles Smith
Starks was always hot or cold, but he played with heart. Smith has no passion and thats way worse
I blame Pat Riley more than Starks. We all know Starks was hot and cold and could heat up at any time, but Riles should've seen it wasn't Starks' night ... ESPECIALLY when you have a home grown Brooklyn talent by way of Panama sitting on the bench. Proven scorer Rolando Blackman.
Charles Smith? No one would call him a best, dude. He was athletic and fast. That was it. He was good man to have on your roster IF you could have him for cheap. Charles Smith...thank you for not scoring against the bulls in that final sequence. That's the only reason people remember him.

Stunt 1: All-Star caliber in LA but hurt in New York! Stunt 2: Knicks looking for the Scottie that Smith wasn't! Stunt 3: Bulls defense smothered them missed layups!

Charles Smith was a similar player to LaMarcus Aldridge. PF was his natural position so I have some sympathy for him due to bad coaching. Not putting him in a position to play at his optimum level.
But as a Knick fan him not going up strong.....even if he missed a dunk ......we can take that, but being 6'10" with long arms under the basket and not dunking? NO EXCUSES.
We gave Ewing a break for the missed finger roll, but he had built up equity from us for how hard he played and always put us in a position to win. Charles didn't have that caché.
Just say the name Charles Smith to a hardcore Knicks fan and watch the expression on their faces..... 😡......then comes expletives.
As a hardcore Knicks fan I can understand the first shot getting blocked.....but after that it MUST be a DUNK attempt. That's why we were so upset. TAKE IT UP STRONG!!!
Charles was a good player and he just got a raw deal see if you can find one on Kent Benson and I think he played for Milwaukee but at that time I thought his career had ended when Kareem punched him oh yeah one more thing I would like the music in the background been dancing to it. Maybe this is a Mandela effect on me, but I swear Smith played the 5 with the Clippers. He didn't start playing the 3 till he got to the Knicks. Also, Manning wasn't a full-time 4. He played the 3 as well.
I knew that the Knicks played him out of position at small forward but I didn't know the Clippers tried it first. Regardless of how well he made it up and down the floor he was NOT a small forward. Victim of very bad coaching!!
This is what frustrates me about ranking players, top 75 all time and so on, it is very often not just the player but also the coach and organization that determines their success. Charles Smith on the right team with a great coach would have rings and be talked about. Michael Jordan without Phil Jackson…he would for sure have several fewer rings and be less in the GOAT conversation. Not comparing the two, just saying that a lot of players deserve more credit.
