    In answer to your Twitter question, Darcy started following Lizzie first and Lizzie made a tweet acknowledging that she noticed that. But she didn't start following him until later closer to the Pemberley arc and yes, fans flipped out when they noticed that.

      @@TheAshleyClements I think the canon-in-world-impetus for Lizzie following Darcy was her checking to ensure he wouldn't be at Pemberley when she got there (in the first Pemberley episode she references having "twitter stalked" him). I feel like Jay confirmed that was the reason at some point

    Delaying the Wickham backstory reveal until later in the series also kept those of us who DID know the book version of P&P in suspense because we weren't sure how faithfully the writers would actually stick to Wickham's backstory. So at least for me, the fact that Lizzie chooses not share in this version made me worry about what exactly was in the letter

    I never thought about how of course the audience couldn't be told the contents of the letter because Lydia was watching. I was just nodding and thinking, yes Lizzie you should not share Darcy's little sister past on the interwebs. Good for you that you finally found a line you won't cross.

    Firstly, you are so sassy and coy in this look back, i cannot 😂 Secondly, just to add some discourse to adaptations/writing/etc.: keeping the letter secret was a power move for LBD. With the format their using to story-tell (vlogs), there's freedom to mediate when information can be given, unlike movies, where exposition has to be given at proper times so the audience can follow along and there's not an excessive run time. There's also more realism settled in LBD because of it as well as more opportunities to flesh out the story that perhaps the book or visual adaptations don't do. Even with spoilers from people who knew the story, it adds to the realism of people actually gossiping about it online like we do today. Just more praise for everyone who worked on this project--ya'll are GENIUSES!

    I think it matches well with the book actually. Yes, in the book we readers know because we’re reading. But Lizzie in the book only tells Jane the contents of the letter, no one else. So the rest of the family doesn’t know, and hence part of the reason Lydia ends up in Wickham’s path again.

    • @TheAshleyClements
      @TheAshleyClements  Рік тому +6

      But it’s a different storytelling device for the audience to be in the dark! Especially in our adaptation where you see so much of Lydia and Wickham together (in the spin off), before you ever hear what he did to Gigi.

    • @prplmkyfr
      @prplmkyfr Рік тому +3

      I was going to say this too! In a way, I think it would've been a more substantial change to the story to have Lizzie share the entire contents of the letter like that - it would've altered Lizzie's character. Though I guess some of that alteration has already happened by having her regularly share as much of her personal life as she does, but I personally feel like sharing Darcy's sister's personal life would've crossed a much bigger line.

    I was one of those people who had never read P&P the first time I saw the series, so I didn't know that Wickham was such a terrible person until the Pemberly arc. So I started watching LBD after Hank Green made his video about it. I’ve been obsessed with P&P for maybe 4 years at that point. so I started watching it maybe ep.3 or 4 and let me tell you, the anticipation of actually seeing Darcy was second to none. I’m happy you guys got new viewers after he showed up and that there were a lot of new viewers once the show was already done. But man there was nothing like experiencing watching the majority of the show in real time with all the Twitter updates too. It’s been 10 years but I can still viscerally remember all the emotions I felt during the time of watching the show!

    I do recall from the Twitters ten years ago that there was a big split on reaction to this episode between those of us who had read the book/seen the movie(s) and those who hadn't. Those of us who had read it felt like we had inside scoop, and, for the most part, avoided spoilers for those who hadn't.

    Yes! Lizzie and Darcy started following each other on twitter after episode 60. Her somewhat bitter reference to “he would’ve just tweeted [the letter]” is because while he was watching the videos, he tweeted twice to the effect of “i may need to reevaluate some things” or something like that, idk what the exact wording was. And at some point around that time, Lizzie tweeted something that I think wasn’t directly at Darcy, but indicated that she noticed that he’s following her now.

    Yes to everything you said in this video & other commenters have said here about the smartness (& ripple effects) of not revealing the letter contents at this point in the LBD. As a bonus, it really helps give more agency & power to Gigi later: rounds out her character in 3D & adds strength that *she* gets to choose to tell her story.
    On a far more superficial level, I want to add to the chorus saying your hair is fabulous in this ep, Ashley; I wondered if it was merely my watching on a laptop screen vs on my phone as usual, but no 💁‍♀ It's Caroline-Lee-perfect ;)

    I hadn't ever considered the implications of not sharing the letter or that this is the only adaptation where the exact contents of the letter are not shared. Knowing P&P, I just went along with the whole Lydia story arc, but that really would have created a giant loop hole if she'd seen a video with the whole letter and believed it. Now I feel like I need to watch all of the letter reveals bits more closely while noting Lydia's mood at the time. So many reasons to rewatch the series. 😆

  • @hazeleyeddreamer11
    @hazeleyeddreamer11 Рік тому +1

    I really respected that they didn't reveal the letter here, and chose to break up the reveal for later. I think not sharing the letter in full in the videos kind of treats the audience like another character in the story, like how Book!Lizzie doesn't share Darcy's letter with the general population of Meryton and its environs, as well as showing some character growth for Lizzie. It made a lot of sense to me watching it, and it did feel fun having a bit of "insider knowledge" as someone who had read the book and seen other adaptations many times. Also, your hair looks really nice today!

    I was expecting the plot for the first time! I'd loved the movie as a young child but the only part of the plot I really grasped was that Elizabeth loved Darcy at the end. The Wickham thing was a HUGE plot twist for me, I was gripped. Especially since I stumbled across Lydia's videos first and was wrapped up in their story. While Lizzie is acknowledging she was wrong about Darcy in some respects, she hasn’t been able to do that reflection with Lydia yet. And like you said, if she knew Lydia and Wickham were friendly, I’m sure she would’ve shared the letter’s contents. I think the end of this arc is interesting seeing the shift you do with Lizzie having to deal with the Darcy day stuff and then heading back home.

    So I know that people who hadn't read the book wouldn't have found out about Wickham in this episode, but like. WHO ELSE could "it makes me rethink my once good opinion of someone with whom I'm glad to say I no longer associate" be referring to? And I know it also doesn't say how bad what he did was but you'd have to think the details must be pretty compelling for Lizzie to believe Darcy.

    obviously the letter had to be a secret because it would affect lydia's actions going forward, but i always liked how not sharing it also pulls the audience into the story. the narration in pride and prejudice is third person omniscient, so we get a peek into every character's thoughts. (except for wickham, which means that even the reader has to take darcy's word for it about what happened, and thus wickham _fascinates_ me as a villain) but in changing the format, suddenly we're on the same level as the characters, trying to navigate this story with the incomplete, biased information we've been given thus far

    Just out of curiousity (you definitely don't have to answer this if you don't want to) - were you / the other actors working on other projects at the same time then? And did all the extra time outside of the shoot days that you put in interfere with your ability to take on other projects? Because like you said... even with the raises $600/month is painfully short of what I imagine it would've cost to live in LA, and I'm assuming the other cast members were paid even less than that as well.
