Probably best to give this bit of utter class the full respect it deserves by playing it extremely loud and avoiding looking at the bizarre spectacle parading around in front of you...

The guitarist on the right is my new role model. That coolness at about 1:32 is epic. Not too many examples of that level of fu factor pre '67.

I asked Theo about this and his typically dry, hilarious response was gold...I was bored shitless and wanted to get this song out of the way so we could record our next flop"...a good man

Insanely good. The verse is great, the middle 'without your loving' bit is my favourite bit, and the chorus is great as well. Each time we go to a different part of the song it's both novel and familiar at the same time. Songwriting can be so simple when it works.
I'd only known the Atlantics for the instrumentals, and then you hear this, an absolutely awesome garage/surf/mod rock song with all the surf-y reverb and toms. True the singer isn't exactly stevie wright, but who is. They probably didn't want a front man getting all the attention. And be the Shadows to his Cliff. He sounds great.

Great! I was in Sydney in 1968, but The Atlantics were not as huge hits as were the Beach Boys in the USA at the same time. Promotion and air-play was probably the difference. Well done for The Atlantics! BTW, in this video the singer's head had a ceramic image of human hair attached with epoxy cement to his skull.

I went to an Atlantics concert about six years
ago and Bosco the bass player did the vocals.
I didn't think much of some Australian bands until I went to the concert"Long way to the Top". Some Australian bands can display incredible talent when you see them live. Russell Morris once performed an entire concert on acoustic when his electric was stolen...Billy Idol on the other hand refused to perform when the electric enhancement did not operate. So much for English superiority.

They started out as quite possibly Australia's premiere surf band, with local hits like "Bombora",which I think the 90s group named themselves after, but they obviously only got better.

Back in the early sixties in Australia when the Beatles hit it big, kids could buy black plastic Beatle wigs. I remember the neighbor kid had one and I got to try it on once. What a thrill that was.
Well, I believe that's what lead singer Johnny Reb is wearing here.

I had never heard this song...it is really great and shows even then, in the music business you need talent plus luck...and some money helps. This song is really good, stands up to many of the same kind of songs by big band about then. Interesting to think how far advanced the Beatles were then, just about when this song came out, Sgt Peppers made history. This video is a great salute to all those grage band over the years that never made it big, but were damn good.

  • @Stacela

Thanks for the reply. I just did a search on Johnny Rebb on Yahoo and it says he was born in 1935; that means he must be around 72 now and was around 30ish in the video. He looks younger in this video; he looks more like he's in his early 20's. Hard to believe he's that old now.

@jbrown1169 Welcome to TV in the 60's, look up almost any show and the performances are mimed or the guitar and drums are mimed and the lead singer did a prerecorded version of the vocals. The rest of your comments are just head scratching and I won't even comment on them.

I plan to go to the beach next weekend thank you. I'm also drinking ice cold Cuba 59's. I
like most music and just ask that you give some Aussie bands a chance(i.e.Axiom) Aussie has a low population density which prides itself on sport. It was a long way to get off this isolated island to tour America or Europe
with it's entertainment. The Atlantics were big fans of the Shadows as I am. Yes,Britain
has produced a lot but even Aussie has outdone
France in music which makes me feel good.

This is a fantastic work!, but if it's in '67 as the title says, then it's about a year too late. It's kind of a '66 sound, which would explain why it didn't catch on.
