Dixie saw the dawn of radio, talkies, television, kinescopes, video tape, and became a UA-cam sensation. I just found their channel tonight/this morning. They left an incredible treasure trove of information, work, and warmth. Thank you to her family and friends for maintaining the archives.
True genius. This is one of those times when I’m really glad we have UA-cam. This way at least a small portion of her genius may live on through her lessons and the gift of teaching.
Such Beautiful work, and a really good teacher, I really hope some of us can carry on some of her skills shes showed us, and i hope shes taught one of her family members to carry on this fading skill of the old days. Rest in peace Ma'am you will be missed.....
Since a lot of you don't live in Tulsa I feel it important to let everyone know that Dixie passed away yesterday 2/10/15. May she rest in peace. She was one of a kind.
ScissorTail So sorry to hear this. She has left a memory of her skills that will last many lifetimes and has helped me and many others to try and reach her high standards. Bless her and may she rest in peace.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, SHE WAS SUCH AN AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL ARIST. I LITERALLY JUST FOUND HER, THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND VIDEO I GOT TO SEE OF HER. GOD BLESS HER SOUL MAY SHE REST IN PEACE AND CREAT AMAZING INSTRUMENTS IN HEAVEN. WHEN THESE OLD TIMER CRAFTS PEOPLE PASS ITS A HUGE LOSS TO THE WORLD, EVERYTHING IS COMPUTERS, CNC AND INSTANT GRATIFY GARBAGE. I WISH I COULD HANG OUT WITH SOME OLD SCHOOL LUTHIERS AND SHARE STORIES AND INFORMATION THIS STUFF NEEDS TO BE PASSED DOWN SO HER ART WILL NEVER BE LOST.
Hi Dixie . Good job on this video ..helpful with the tips on glue and on how to do this with out over explaneing your work . thanks and God Bless... RESPECT Brother Bruce
Thank. You so much for the video. I'm a novice and would like to learn more tips on inlays and replacing inlays with different types of materials. Thanks again so much for sharing your knowledge
HI Dixie, that is a great video and informative presentation of your fantastic skills. I would have loved to have seen more detail of the inlay cutting and finishing before the pearl is slotted in, but am impressed with what you have done. Thank You.
thanks I am actually a bowyer seeking riser or bow handle accents of abalone; I also do some lapidary cabochons etc. I began to inlay with my dremel and/or woodburner iron, but didn't think to use my router attachement for the dremel to make the depth consistent where I can and/or it's flat enoguh...I, was routing it without a depth setting or stop by eyeball...that makes the middle easier witgh the little router attachement, just like the big router for the bow form haha thanks
Dixie - great video. I have a finished guitar I would like to put some paua inlays in - do you recommend using the same technique with the router? Also, how is abalone or pearl to work with when sanding? does it maintain it's luster? thank you!
I see the top of your you tube page has an inlay on a guitar of a cat playing the fiddle...I was telling a guy at work today I wanted an inlay of a rabbit playing the fiddle on the top of my banjer. How much would it cost me to have it done approximately?
Very impressive, I understand all this but she goes from the inlay and then shows it with black engraved lines? how does she engrave them and how does she fill the void?
There is a lot of processes between seconds 5:56 and 6:09- 6:18 I am not sure I understand..... not sure what exactly to ask but I got lost a little there.
Really enjoyed your video. I've tried and tried to find a good video of this. I certainly don't want to seem unappreciative but is there any way you could do another that actually show 1) The router size you are using. 2) you actually routing the fingerboard. If you watch this video you say the light goes through the big hole while you look through the small hole and then we can just look at the back of your hand and never get a chance to see you work. 3) How you cut your 90° corners? Small Chisel? 4) Once you finish and sand your fingerboard to the proper bevel, would you show us how you actually clean, scribe, and paint your inlay pieces. Thank you very much, you are a real talent. I'd love to be able to do these. I see the snakes that run down the fingerboard and I do know where even to start. Thanks Again!
Brotha, do your home work ok, try to see through the eyes of Macgyver. I can use just a simple Dremel Kit. As long as you can square it up, and use the size of bit you want. for more accuracy. Easy enough
Thanks, I wrote this three months ago and in that time I have figured out quite a bit. You said a mouthful when you mentioned MacGiver. I understand now that it shouldn't be over analyzed. Just do it. Thanks again.
No they don't affect the sound at all, so are just purely decoration. That's one reason you can put them on top end guitars, you can bling them up and add value to them.
Imho and for the instruments I have played, some small inlays (eg dots) won't directly affect the sound, but in larger amount (D45 style, intricate tree of life fingerboard, etc) it will (adding some extra zing, for the better or not depending on what you like). Plus there may potentially be a psychological effect : many players don't play in the same way the same instrument wether it is inlayed or not, hence it indirectly affects the sound too (often for a more delicate playing).
How to inlay some simple stars on a fretted banjo neck and in the area of the scoop ? I know the ideal way is to inlay when it is un-fretted but how about when frets are in place?
P Dale McConnell It's possible ,but difficult to face off the pearl even with the surface of the fingerboard.Better to remove the frets, then put in new frets.

You are Awesome! :)
just great! :) wow :)
dixie please do one on engraving and thanks so much
That frog instantly brought a song to mind: "Hello by baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal......"!!!
Could you show what router bit is used to cut the inlay slots in the finger board
I hope you're still around, man!
What kind of dremel bit do you prefer to use for the detailed work? Is it cylindrical or coned, and is it diamond coated or have a bladed edge?
Thanks for posting this. I'd like to see the actual dremel tool set up you used, can you show that somehow ?
Very nice video lots of information how do you do the engraving ?
Hi Dixie, awesome work! Can you put octagon inlays on a guitar? Can't hardly find a guitar with them on the fret board. Thanks.
Dixie - great video. I have a finished guitar I would like to put some paua inlays in - do you recommend using the same technique with the router? Also, how is abalone or pearl to work with when sanding? does it maintain it's luster? thank you!
Thanks great video, nice work?
Where do you go to get mother of pearl? and how thick should your inlay work be?
I have an old 1895 banjo, where the inlays have fallen to out. How do replace or make new inlays for and old recess?
you mentioned you used a dremel for your routing correct? Can you show how you set it up to use?
I see the top of your you tube page has an inlay on a guitar of a cat playing the fiddle...I was telling a guy at work today I wanted an inlay of a rabbit playing the fiddle on the top of my banjer. How much would it cost me to have it done approximately?
What do you use to mark on the Pearl. Pencil won’t work.
Very impressive, I understand all this but she goes from the inlay and then shows it with black engraved lines? how does she engrave them and how does she fill the void?
Hi Dixie,
Did you inlay that fingerboard before or after it was radiused ?
Is there a trick to glue a very thin line of pearl inlay to scribe (.08 wide). I am concerned that it will break after I glue it for scribing.
Be nice if he told us how Deep to route the cavity, and the size of the bit.
About how much does an entire fingerboard for a guitar cost to have custom work like that installed?
What kind of router bit do you use?
How do you get the lines on the inlays..
There is a lot of processes between seconds 5:56 and 6:09- 6:18 I am not sure I understand..... not sure what exactly to ask but I got lost a little there.

Sorry "Macgyver". It's been a while.
Como deixar uma lâmina de madrepérola reta ?
My question is. Are Pearl Inlays Just Decoration or do they affect the sound of the Guitar
No they don't affect the sound at all, so are just purely decoration. That's one reason you can put them on top end guitars, you can bling them up and add value to them.

Interesting. OK, what if you have a guitar with just plain ugly dot inlays. Can you take those dots out and put a different inlay in there.
God Bless!
Do you ever answer questions ?
What do you want to know?
How to inlay some simple stars on a fretted banjo neck and in the area of the scoop ? I know the ideal way is to inlay when it is un-fretted but how about when frets are in place?
