compliments! Excuse me, is the glue Super Attack?
Thank you, the one in this video was insta cure, I have also tried 2P 10 but now I am using Starbond products... really like them and all the available accessories to go along with them.
There is a link and discount code in the description and I also made a review of their glue in this video.
Hope this helps 👍

Thanks
This dude spends more time on his inlay than most people put into their entire instrument!
Labor of love…
The level of detail that luthiers work at always blows my mind. I'm drooling over this mandolin!
+Pale Dog Tool Co. thanks man!!! That means a lot ..
remember, always ask your luthier what it will cost...……...and always give him more.
and always give him love
or her
Absolutely a piece of art. Not only does it require the patience, a very straight connection between eyes, brain and hand movement but most of all the "craziness" and fearless state of mind to even start... now it's clear why most of us are looking for a simple logo. I enjoyed watching this!
+Not Just Sawdust Thanks Gerrit, it is nerve wracking .. but so rewarding.. thanks for watching and on the feedback! Really happy you enjoyed the show;)
Indeed the years of work have brought you to perfection,s door. I came here to see how it is done and learned quite a bit . LOL I have ground my MOP material from sea shells from our fountain , wood from an African visit decades ago , along with elephant and walrus ivory both over 100 years old. Detail , detail. Thank you for a level to aspire to some day.
Such an amazing work. I love the detail . I just recently got interested in learning this art this video is most definitely inspiring . Thank you for sharing hope one day I get to be as good as you.
I remember inlaying abalone shell pearl into the back of a flatback lute manually with a whole carving set (majorly carving pens) 10 years ago in the workshop, which took me and my partner more than 2 weeks to achieve so.
I'm dead envy the possession of them mechanic drills you have, must've saved a lotta time from thus.
I didn’t know this was so complicated, beautiful
WOW! Amazing, thanks for sharing that with us. I always wondered how that was done!
I took your recommendation from your latest video, To come here and watch your technique for inlay. I'm truly enlightened now. Thank you.
Glad this was useful, thanks for watching both videos:)
Beautiful workmanship thank for demonstrating this.👍👍👍
Nice! Ebony dusting works very well. My banjo I made in the 80's has held up perfectly using this method. Yikes 35 years!
loved the video. what an excellent design, craftsmanship and most of all patients.
Thanks Tony!! I miss you guys... hope all is going well.
Wow!!! Speachless. 💕
The music really set the tone. That combined with the style of shooting you did was perfect. Beautiful work!
Thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed it
That shellac hits different with this level of detail. Strong work man
Standing ovation!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks ☺️
Pure Awesomeness******* You are a True craftsman, I love watching your videos Thank you Sir..
+scott 1911man Glad you like it Scott!!! Thanks for watching..
Very informative, a valuable lesson on fine craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing, I was trying to figure out how to do it in the dark but you've made it clear as day now. Best regards.
Glad this was helpful...
Very precise routing of the peghead, I like the way you tricked it to get the footprints of the inlay but I was so afraid that the abalone pieces would rupture when you cut them on the base with your razor blade. Pretty scary moment ! Wonderful work, this will be a wonderful instrument
THIS. This is exceptional work. Wonderful!
Bravo pour ce merveilleux travail.
I use paper templates, do the inlay pieces, trace around them on paper, stick that to the job, cut out the centres and machine or cut the inside material out.
This is so inspiring! Thank you for your video!
Thanks!
Absolutely Beautifully done
+Rag Tie thank you:)
wow you are a artist
Nice work brother.
That mother of pearl is beautiful.
+Eric Rusch Sr Thanks Eric!
Stunning. Thank you for sharing!
+Daniel Taylor you’re welcome Daniel! Thanks for watching:)
In the first half I got confused thinking I was bated with the thumbnail and title but I couldn't help but appreciate your genius using the glue to mark for routing! Well done.
Thanks Ryan!
Perfect choice of music! I appreciate it very much! : )
Thanks for the feedback! Greatly appreciated.. glad you enjoyed it
@@HovingtonInstruments Hi, Great job. What's the title of music piece ? Thank you.
Ooophs... you have it at d end of video...thanks. Cheers
You sir, are a true artist!
+Darrell Blanchard thanks Darrell.
Wow! Your drill index is awesome, and I love your work. Peace.
Joel Wetzel thanks Joel!
Very nice work ! excellent and very didactic for all the people ! greetings from Buenos Aires - Argentine
Thank you very much kind Sir!
Yours is the best video I've seen on hand-cut pearl inlay. Beautiful work bro.
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it
I'm back a year later. What size blade did you use to cut your pearl? How many blades did that design take? Cut my first pearl last night, one letter, four blades. Still a remarkable video! Thank you.
you are a MASTER!
I will have to try this out. I've always wanted to do some inlay work on box lids.
Let me know how it turns out..
best inlay video I've seen on UA-cam
Thanks for the feedback! I have another one coming out soon ( part of a collaboration) make sure you check it out too.
Awesome work. So nice !
Beautiful work Tomy. Such precision!
+GuysWoodshop Thanks for watching Guy!
Going to give this a go. Beautiful work!
Let me know how it goes 👍
wonderful job!
Real nice work Tomy! Best wishes to you!
Thank you!
I’ve been waiting for this one. Thanks so much for sharing. I love it.
+Marcel's Workshop Thanks for watching Marcel, glad you enjoyed it:)
Amazing how you do this. this is such finesse work. I love the new flower. Going over and above my friend.
And with those pearloid tuner knobs it looks even better. so glad we went with those rather than the chrome ones... my god it's sweet. Funny yesterday I went through the whole playlist (need to add the making of the neck and this one to that playlist Tomy) and today I get a new video. I am hussling up work best I can right now. So glad it's not done this month, my worst for work of the year haha... I have 6 Christmas shows this year though. Most I have ever had to do Christmas Carols in my whole life
+Barry Wilson really happy you like the flower, and you are right, they compliment the knobs really well.. the fretboard inlay will tie everything together... I’m really happy on how everything is looking so far:) coming up... the neck joint!!
This is dedication!! I always wondered how Gibson and Ibanez, etc managed to make all those cool inlays. Now I know. I am thinking of trying this myself this winter if I find I have the guts to do so, I will be doing it on a piece which will be against wood, so no black paint to cover up with, however, using dust to fill the gaps is a good idea, i assume just using really fine dust from the same wood as I am adding the inlay to will do just fine. Anyway, thanks for a gorgeous video. Cheers!!
Gibson and Ibanez obviously have cnc’s to do all the routing and cutting but yes, same idea.
Hope you enjoy the process, let me know how it goes…
Beautiful Work!
Thanks
That is a beautifull work!! Thks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Mark!
That's amazing work and imagination.people who gave you thumbs down, can't even use glue.....
Thanks for watching and your feedback!👍
Very nice, thank you for the instruction
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Encoré! 👏
Perfect!! Congrats!!!
+Ivan Monteiro Thanks Ivan!
Beautiful! What if you would like to apply some finish to the headstock (tru-oil or another)? Would it stain the inlay and how do you protect it before applying or clean it after? Thanks!
whats the name of that mashine u used to do the holes???
That is some tedious work. But much respect to those who have the patience.
Fabulous!
+Sigi0 thank you:)
Great work.
Thanks !
thank you
Welcome:)
I don't know how you find anything with your tools so organized.
Best video I've seen in a while!
Thanks David! Glad you enjoyed it...

@@HovingtonInstruments wow! You sir are an amazing craftsman! I love the no BS style and pace of your videos, I myself have built 10 acoustics, one used all wood from home depot! I want to up my game with some inlay work, at my level of finishing skill I would make about about 1.00 an hour to sell one! They play and sound great but the finnishing takes as long as the rest of the build it seems!
What grit do you use for sanding?
Great work! Thank you for posting it! I would like to know if you can apply tru-oil or other finish, after sanding, or would it stain the inlay? Thanks!
Just as he started, my wife and I went on a cruise. When we returned after an amazing adventure, he was just completing the last sanding and cleaning it all up.
Very poetic, glad to hear you both enjoyed the video
What grit of sandpaper did you use in the final?
so cool!
+Wood By Wright Thanks James!!
@ Wood By Wright Ah, now i see why you are playing with hide glue! When should we expect the hand tools only guitar build series? =)
@@HovingtonInstruments hello sir beautiful work 👍 real craftsmanship.what size router bits do you used for name routing? Do you use down cut ot up cuts? Thank you
@@gortigzolbo I use different sizes bits.
Stewmac has a kit with 5 different size.
www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/bits/carbide-upcut-and-downcut-inlay-router-bits-set-of-10.html
You can also use dentist bits if you know a way to get them but the don’t last as long ..
Sorry for the late reply
Very nice, alot of work though, thanks 😊😊😊
I could stay wathing this for hours....... 🙏🙏👍👍
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the channel :)
Very nice detail, beautiful work. What saw blade are you using for the pearl inlay and what bit cutter for the wood?
That is so beautiful
Thank you 😊
@@HovingtonInstruments Keep doing you brother, you got my respect for the dedication to your skill.
there's service to change my inlays?
amazing... artwork!
Do you think using CNC to cut the pear sheet it self? to cut the design out? is it okay for the pearl material or would it like break it?
Wow. So that's how it's done.
Thanks for watching!
I just read through all the comments, but don't see this one yet. Where are you getting the mother of pearl blanks and what thickness do you find works best?
Incredible job, awesome
Thank you!
Tomy Hovington I can only dream of being an apprentice in such refined art in a renowned workshop like that. Make a video one day about how it all started for you. Cheers
Thanks! I'm thinking about a Q & A.. So when I make one I will talk about that! Thanks For watching!
Thanks for the ideas. I tried the model glue to hold the MOP in place and it worked great. I had two dragonfly's inlays cut into parts - head, tail, and 4 winds each. So gluing them on was a lot better than trying to use a stencil because I decided to flip the body on one. That way they looked like they were going in different directions. Gluing them made it easy and is how I will do it from now on.
Glad the video was helpful 👍 thanks for your feedback
This was very informative. What kind of glue did you use for the temporary positioning of the abalone?
Wow! Beautiful work! Thank you so much for sharing! I am currently building an electric guitar, and I am now inspired to try and inlay my logo! Thanks again. Beautiful Mandolin!
Thanks Jason, have fun with your inlay.. it is so rewarding when completed
Absolutely beautiful work! Steady hands and patience man! Curious: is the dust generated toxic? I should be better about wearing my mask
thanks for watching.
Here’s a link about the subject. I prefer to stay on the safe side...

What is hand cut mother of pearl
Not sure if I am just missing it but I was trying to figure out what kind of hand saw and blade you were using to cut out the mother of Pearl. For my marquetry I use a 00 blade but feel like that would be too delicate.
Actually , I use 000 blades with a lot of patience and some cursing;)
What glue is best for this? I bought hide glue but I hear superthin superglue is best?
Super thin superglue, hands down..
I'm in the middle of a similar project. Can u tell me were you found that router assembly for your Dremel please.
Hi, yes.. the base is from stewmac they also provide a selection of down cutting bits for your Dremel.
Here’s a link to the router base..
www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/routers/precision-router-base/
How did they get the inlays in before the dremel?
They are glued to the surface to scribe around them. I use the same glue used to make plastic model cars to glue the mother of Pearl
Thanks for sharing! Very helpful! After you set the Ebony dust in, is that thin superglue you use to wash over it with?
Super work and with your attention to detail, I bet your Mandolins sound great.
Yes Bill, it’s super thin super glue.
Very nice
Thanks Allen
You sanding off all the black, down to the wood, how did you get the black back?
The black back is a thin black veneer glued to the backside

I was fortunate engulf to do jewelry working in college, we sat at eye level with our work, you need a lower seat. I don't say this to be mean, I just want your back to be healthy, and thanks for posting the video.
Totally agree, instead of lowering my seat though I’ve raised the work surface. I’m sure you will appreciate this stand I made about 1 1/2 years ago. ua-cam.com/video/mC5h8qhqNQY/v-deo.html
Thanks for your comment, my desire to change the work height was directly linked to my back :)
What kind of dremel head did yoy used to engrave the spots for the inlays?
I used this base www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Routers_and_Bits/Routers/Precision_Router_Base.html
With those bits www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Routers_and_Bits/Bits/Carbide_Downcut_Inlay_Router_Bits.html

Hello Tomy, great video, this tool you are using with the grinding machine where can I find this model?
If you are referring to the Dremel base
www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/types-of-tools/routers-and-bits/routers/precision-router-base/
What glue did you use to tack down the pearl for scribing?
I used Testors cement for plastic models, thanks for watching
Such a magnific work!! Man,why the ebony powder? To give to the inlay more aderence?
I like to fill the gaps between the MoP and the ebony with ebony dust. it smooths the transition and create a flat surface for finish over it
Wonderful video...the filming shows as much care as the actual work. Lot of info with links....the only thing missing is credit for the music.....
Music credits are always at the end of my videos. Probably just stopped watching before the end. My new videos now also have the credits in the description. My wife is a musician and I make sure to give credits to the artist. Thanks for watching and the feedback
@@HovingtonInstruments Thank you!...I'm a hobbyist luthier...and I play piano; thus the reason for my comments...Cheers!
how long was total working time for that head?
Not totally certain, I would guesstimate around 8hrs. Thanks for watching!
6:00 are you using a nail?
I would love to own one of your F-style mandolin’s! And I can’t even play mandolin.. I play guitar lol
Well, when you get one it will be a good incentive to learn how to play;) thanks for watching.
Beautiful craftsmanship, and very interesting to watch. Just a suggestion, maybe some guitar music would be more apt lol
Thanks for your feedback. Glad you found it interesting.
Unfortunately with the amount of free royalty music available to use I usually use what I can find… that being said, guitar would have been wrong too since it’s an Octave Mandolin I was making… 🤷♂️
@@TomyHovingtonHiking ahh you've got me there🤣🤣 Keep up the good work and best of luck with future projects👍
did you scribe the outline to be routed or use pencil? I've been trying to use pencil but its hard to see sometimes.
Yes, I use an needle to scribe and then white chalk to highlight the scribe line
Makes a huge difference. Hope this helps
Excellent. Tomy, just curious how long did it take to cut out that Hovington logo? What kind of blades are used in your coping saw for this job?
A couple hrs, I used 1/0 blades in my jeweller saw. Great deals on amazon for these blades cause they do break easy..
What liquid did you add to the ebony grain filler? All I saw was "insta cure"
It’s super glue.
isn't 'super glue' a bit too generic? there are tons of super glues vinylic acrilates epoxy...
New sub here! Greetings sir from South America. Can you tell me a little bit about the jewelers saw and blade sizes used in this video?
Thank you so much in advance!
Hey Don , thanks for subbing! Welcome aboard:) the jewelry saw is from stew Mac www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Saws/Pearl_Cutting_Saw.html
And I get my blades on eBay 3/0 or 4/0. www.ebay.com/itm/144Pc-Saw-Blades-Jeweler-Metalworking-Metal-Cutting-Jewelry-Repair-Tool-Size-4-0/233059377099?epid=2124487357&hash=item36436bdfcb
