Jenn Im you have to read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Life changing! It’s philosophical and makes the reader question the stories we’ve been told about why things are the way they are. Puts a whole new perspective regarding human nature and how we impact the environment

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. It was such a fulfilling story about how you change each person around you, whether you know it or not. The ending made me cry 😭😭 not because it was particularly sad but bc it was so heartwarming

JENNNNNNN I JUST GOT AN IDEA IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS VIDEO!!!!
You should do a look book about what you think a certain character from a book would wear? I know this is a little more complicated since there are millions of books not everyone reads, but maybe it could be a start of something different on your channel? I hope you continue to do the art one, just not so literal like last time :)

I definitely recommend 'The five people you meet in heaven' by Mitch Albom. It's about Eddie, a wounded war veteran who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him, as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his ''meaningless'' life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: ''Why was I here?''
I read it when I was younger and it was one of those books that really stayed with me. It's a pretty light read for a somewhat heavier subject, so if you can, definitely pick it up. :)

Jenn please read Snow Falling on Cedars! I think I recommended it to you a couple years ago! It's historical fiction about a Japanese American family in Washington state whose whole life is upended by the Japanese internment camps of WW2. That's really only part of the book though, as it is about how the dad came from Japan and made a prosperous life in America. His family rented and farmed land from a white family so the book is also about the relationship between those two families. It's a really famous book and I think you would love it!

Jenn, you are truly so inspiring. I read half of these books haha but I will look forward to read the ones that I haven’t read! Thank you so much for bringing up the “almost forgotten part” of korean and Japanese history. It is quite sad that we never got to deeply learn about the Japanese invasion of Korea even in world history class. History is somewhat being forgotten from many people in this advanced industrial society and I believe it is so important to bring it up. This is not a comment to spark a historical debate; I wanted to point out that although world history is vast and it is extremely hard to learn about every country’s history, I wish American schools taught us about the aftermath of the invasions or how inhumane the treatment were.

Tatiana Halley That’s rly cool! My school is branching out on history subjects other than US History or “world history” by putting classes like foreign policies, woman studies, holocaust, ethnic studies, etc, but never rly went through the comfort women part so I was kinda sad. Your class seems rly fun I wish I can join in the conversations 😂

*For avid fans of “The Five People You Meet In Heaven” by Mitch Albom:* I actually read this book last summer for the first time and it easily became my favorite book! Well, surprise, surprise - Mitch also recently released the second book to this story - “The Second Person You Meet In Heaven”. It focuses on the life of Annie - the girl that Eddie saves in the first book. It reinforces the message that we’re all connected in one way or another, even if we don’t realize it on our time on Earth. It’s just as much of a page turner as the first and I may or may not have shed a few more tears reading this one than the first. And not to give any spoilers, but there’s a nice little twist at the end! If you loved the first book, you’re bound to love this one as well!

Hi Jenn! Since Pachinko is on your list, I would REALLY recommend that you check out Min Jin Lee’s first novel, “Free Food for Millionaires.” Stylistically, it is similar to Pachinko with the multiple perspectives and interconnected story lines, but it’s much more contemporary and set in 90s NYC. Lee weaves a very long and interesting tale that I think is still relevant for a lot of Asian Americans and young people more generally, because she discusses relationships, money, class, and just striving to make it in a competitive world (while also addressing facets of immigrant experiences and generational differences). I’d also note that as you said, Pachinko is wonderful in the awareness it brings to a part of history (colonial Korea) that is often overlooked internationally, and that I personally appreciated the spotlight on inter-Asia diasporas!

You should definitely read "Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on love and life from Dear Sugar" by Cheryl Strayed. She is the woman who wrote Wild, but this book is completely different. It is a collection from an advice column that she wrote in the early 2000's before she published Wild. My best friend gave me this book after my dad died in November and it changed my life. The advice in the book is applicable to anyone and is delivered with such wit that it made me smile during some of the hardest times of my life.

The first one helped me understand introversion and extroversion, and the latter helped me understand more about how we got to where we are today as a species. Highly recommend both if you wanna learn more things about the world! :)

I find that if you have a block in whatever activity you do that if you let your mind regenerate by giving it a rest. your mind for the task will be refreshed and you can carry on with a fresh mind. giving you better ideas. good things take time

Highly recommend Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata! Also since you really enjoy thrillers, I recommend reading In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami - it kept me up all night for days!!

I find it amazing & profound that the first book you named was The Untethered Soul because the first time I came across the book was an incident when a substitute teacher was reading it and as I passed by, I felt compelled to say something about the book. This very small remark or insignificant question, which I normally wouldn’t have ever done, led to a full on conversation, soon irrelevant to the novel, about the Universe, astrology, religion, existence, and just overall one of the best conversations I’ve ever had in my life. Ever since, I’d been meaning to read the book, and this video just sealed and assured me that I absolutely must. Thank you & much love, Jenn, you beautiful being!

Hi Jenn, for book recommendations, I highly recommend you to read:
    - Devotion of Suspect X: It's a crime/mystery novel with psychological suspense and a mindblowing plot twist at the end.
    - Journey under the Midnight Sun: also a mystery novel (also with a shocking ending) but it's reaaaally worth reading
These are both written by Higashino Keigo, an amazing Japanese author. The way he puts details in the story, how he describes characters' behaviors and their personalities is very unique
Trust me you wouldn't be able to put the book down once you read them ;) much love ^^

I loveeeeee Pachinko, it was a beautifully written book. I love Korean culture and am really interested in learning about the history. This book really highlighted this time in history and presented what it was like for Koreans in Korea and Koreans living in Japan. I really recommend If you leave me by Hans Kim. It is also a historical fiction novel.

Pachinko seemed really interesting to me and will have to read it sometime. And inspired me to read up on global history topics that are usually not talked about. Thank You, Jenn, for the inspo

Jenn I don’t know if you’ll see this, but if you do, I just wanted you to know that I’m 22 years old and never really cared about reading books for pleasure until you introduced us to The Four Agreements. I went to my local Barnes and Noble and picked it up and OMG it was such a life changing read for me! Now I’m on amazon about to order the 3-4 books because of you lol! I love you Jenn! xoxo
