Just retired after 47 years of police service and I know very well about police training for hours and not content. Just couldn’t take it anymore. Thank You all for your Services.

this story is on me, as an instructor. back in the late 70's, i was contacted to teach a class by a large charitable organization that shall remain nameless. it was to teach a class for women called, W.A.S.P. or WOMEN ARMED for SELF PROTECTION. i knew guns, i was/am OCD on safety. i had been shooting since methuselah was a toddler. what i was not trained in was how to be an instructor. it still went ok. i had classes of 5 or 6 students and i was seeing gratifying improvement over about three weekly classes. they listened, eager to learn, wanting to become proficient. that was in spite of my lack of teaching experience. then tragedy struck. there was a murder in the local city. a man butchered a mother and her two small children with a big knife. my next class was 29 ladies. one lady was elderly. she showed up with an old Hawes .44 magnum cowboy gun, already loaded and nearly 100 rounds of ammo for the class. she, as in most others, barely knew which end of the gun to grab ahold of. there was no way i could teach that many effectively and give each student the attention they needed and deserved. i ran to the range house that had a phone. i called a cop buddy that happened to be a range instructor for his department. he treated it like the emergency it almost was and he showed up quickly, in about 10-15 minutes with a couple of fellow officers in tow. i kept the class busy pontificating on safety etc. 'till the carvery arrived. they efficiently took over, not only that class, but the whole program. which was obviously better for all concerned. i was no longer needed.

You did the right thing. And that friend responded with the speed and experience to help provide the program and you with the safety and experience that was needed. That's a great friend. And you knew how to identify your limits and when to ask for help.

Another great show gentleman. No one is touching my toes that's for sure 😮😳😂..BTW where is Roy?
Probably down in his secret bunker right now counting his cases and cases of spare ammo 😂

How about live ammo in the room? On the same table as snap caps? Swapping magazines out? I spoke up and got the "look." I moved to the back. They separated the ammo.

The Department I worked for sent me to Instructor school for two weeks to make me a training instructor/ officer for things the training bureau didn’t have time for or to bother with. All classes are by training hours to maintain certification. All the training I did only lasted as long as the Highest Ranking attendee was willing to stay. Eight hour classes went anywhere from maybe 4 hours down to 40 minutes. Just long enough to take names and give out certificates. Always had the whole HQ staff from the Director on down. AND they always learned something.

I wish Tom had said what the reaction of those ladies was! Did they walk out of the class or surrender their toes?! I’d love to know how they handled it, so to speak!

Hi gang, just wanted to drop a note that I love your podcasts and the comments, as well as the insightful advice…I’ve only read about you guys, and participating in the blog makes it feel like you’re all right here…I’ve had blowhards try to impress me too while out shooting, as well as try to influence my family while I’m on the range with them, but I’ve put forth my best effort not to enforce their biases and bad habits, and just enforce mine (lol, my bad habits & biases)

I believe I attended a class in one of the places you mentioned. One of the things that stuck in my mind was the sales job to buy land and build a house in the upcoming resort. A lifetime membership was involved with free training for life. it was pushed as you MUST buy into it now as being presented before any training was done. No time to waste and you could not get the offer after that morning. The actual shooting portion wasn't really bad at all but the " real estate con" (my opinion I formed during the presentation after having experienced a vacation time share event) turned me off from ever going back.

I would lay odds that I can put a name to the training center that Brent was talking about when he described the instructors marching in and then shooting against the students for dominance. I was in a course once where they had a full-length mirror on the side so students could take a look at their stance, I guess to see how well they were executing it. We noticed that one of the instructors was checking himself out in it every so often to see if he looked macho enough. We had a hard time not laughing.

Everything except the toes, apply where I live.
The “range” requirement is a joke. Show up, shoot 30 rd in an hour and you’re good to go. There were “students” there (for a clp license!!) with their brand new carry gun…that didn’t know if the had a revolver, or a semi auto! I kid you not! They were going to be turned out, on the public, carrying a weapon that they couldn’t define or correctly describe.
    Pathetic!

For me? I don't really care at this point. I have never taken any 'training' but have been told by people all my life that I am 'doing it wrong' from when I was 10 years old and held a handgun with both hands to now? LOL how to hold the gun and how to stand? I sorta 'train' newbies in that I take first time shooters out and teach em the safety basics and some rudimentary ways to stand or shoot... mostly? so long as it is comfortable and using your method will not injure you? it is a great way to shoot. But... old as I am.. I have run into 'trainers' every once in a while. Not a single one has said that if it works for you? it is good.. up until recently Met an instructor from a well known place in Nevada.. at first he was trying to 'help' me... I may not be as fast (don't care) as most of these guys but I usually do as well or better than they do. This guy was showing me how to shoot at like 7 yards? To me? that is hip shooting range or... throw the gun at em range. But he wants me to shoot at a full size blue man (replaced the black man) target. Are you kidding? So I did. he was like being sympathetic because I missed the whole thing with every one of my five shots. He said to just concentrate on the 10 ring or 5 ring part. I said... "I can't see that can you show me on the target?" One of my shots was trash. The rest were right in there.. but in the 2" or whatever version top left? Why would I shoot at a giant man sized target at 3-5 yards? except from the hip of course.
