Living in a van is looked down upon by snooty people, and a retired couple living in an RV is more socially acceptable because they have money. Whomever has more money is the more acceptable one, according to snooty people who sneer their noses while sipping their tea with their pinky high in the air while speaking in a British accent.
Either one should be acceptable so long as the person follows reasonable rules. For example, trash should be kept in the vehicle and disposed of responsibly. Obviously the same for pee. If your van is large, either park overnight only and be gone by morning, rather than blocking the same house for weeks, or park in a lot or campground where it’s permitted, which might require a fee.
Go to LA and find out it's a big difference. Some are not using the RVs as crackdens to sell and smoke crack out of. There are those with their UA-cam channels that do this and those that work and save on housing... Then there are the other ones we see every day.
That still doesn't justify someone living on public land for free. Otherwise, by that logic, I should be able to build a house in a public park and live in it for free paying no property taxes, utilities, or rent. You want to live in your car, then the car needs to be parked in a private lot.
Good point if people could actually afford houses they wouldn't be forced to live in their cars. I found a documentary series on the subject ,it was very sad. But on the other hand, if the people that live in their cars because there is nowhere else to go suddenly got good jobs and bought houses, those rich idiots would only complain that they had to be nabers.
@FishmasTree2 I live in Ohio and rents are about $800. Not everyone is able to live in California. If you can't afford it, move somewhere cheaper. You aren't entitled to live in a house by the ocean just for breathing

This right here. Nailed it. It same way in mountains too. The rich NIMBYS don’t want peasants but they sure as hell like the cheap slave labor. Their dream is to have us all in prison and shipped to work as their slaves. It’s serfdom on steroids.
I've been living in my van for 3 years but am always respectful and considerate of the people who live nearby. I only park on residential streets at night and am gone in the morning. I'm 71 years old can't work and live on S.S. I've got no choice really. I don't blame the ocean beach residents for complaining and I support them. The people living in vans and cars should never cause problems like using the open areas for bathrooms and leaving trash around.
This is one huge factor that a lot of people overlook there are now an enormous amount of seniors and disabled people having to live this way because the only other option is a cardboard box on the sidewalk!

My vehicle is worth almost 30k. Used to do it out of a 1k Corolla. Moving on up!! But even if I sold my car for 28k, it wouldn’t even be enough to cover my other debts, a down payment, a new car because I’ll need that for my job.. so I can’t find a good reason in selling it. It’s a lifeline to me. If I sell it for housing and I get kicked out or fear for my life because my roommate is crazy or something else happens, I’ll have nothing to take refuge in. F that!!
I remember being in San Diego in 2012 thinking “man this is really bad.” It’s only gonna get worse folks. That’s what happens when you make living a normal life impossible.
But is an ocean view “necessary” as part of coping with living in a vehicle? If I had paid millions of dollars for my home, I too would be upset If there are people crowding my neighborhood, urinating and defecating around my property.

Which always seemed strange to me because sleeping is about the most harmless thing one can do.
Yep that's my retirement plan, camper van, combination of boondocking and RV Parks , beats the shit out of renting a room from someone or splitting a 1 bedroom 3 ways,,,, The greed in this country is responsible for this...
Maybe, if they don't make it basically illegal first. They're trying to force people to stay in RV parks, and they'll penalize you and ticket you for public parking wherever they can. It's absolutely sickening. When I'm travelling in mine, I can hardly go a night without police knocking on my window and acting like I'm a criminal. And RV parks charge at least 600-800 a month even for a van, the more expensive ones are over 1000 a month, making it totally pointless. Just like the government wants
Its better than living in a tent or on the sidewalk. When is enough enough for harassing poor people? You dont pay us enough while you sleep in homes and then you harass us for not having anywhere to go.
They can go to "formal" camping-allowed parking lots and PAY there to stay overnight. But these clowns are avoiding paying by just parking wherever, and until the signs that say no overnight parking are actually enforced with patrols kicking people out and handing out tickets or impounding, it will never change

Lots of people pee outside. So, if you see a surfer come in from a session, take off his wetsuit, and pee next to his truck would you advocate to ban surfing? Makes no sense.
I’ve had people tell me that living in a vehicle should be illegal because people that live in their vehicle leave garbage. But I live in my vehicle and, not only do I not leave garbage but often I pick up garbage that isn’t mine. People love to make rules and love to tell others what they can and cannot do. They don’t consider the collateral damage that it causes for people who are innocently trying to live a more peaceful, less expensive, simpler existence.
California is a huge state, there are huge swaths of wide open desert. There's huge swaths of wide open desert in AZ. 25% of AZ is State Trust Land. For a nominal fee you register with the state and get a pass (the legal way to do it) then you can camp on the State Trust Land for up to two weeks at a time before having to move. The same for federal BLM lands... The problem is California is greedy. There are plenty of towns in California that could benefit from the vanlifers/RVers like Quartzsite AZ does. Offer some basic services, security and a place to camp/boondock for a nominal fee. Most of our rigs are self contained and our creature comforts run off solar. Absolutely. We should also never judge the less fortunate, because someday the same could happen to us. In late 2007 during my senior year in high school we lost our beautiful 1932 3 bed 1 bath bungalow during the great recession, after the introductory APR ended on the ARM my parents took out on the home, in 2005 and literally just finished removing all the knob and tube wiring, lead plumbing and other needed renovations, for which I really enjoyed learning as a teen, to add salt to the wound. My mother had gotten laid off around the same time, and Dad got his hours cut back, to make matters worse. If it wasn't for my welcoming grandparents we'd either be living in a tent or in our 1993 Mercury Sable wagon. I myself had to file bankruptcy 8 years ago due to layoffs and unexpected expenses. Prior to the subprime mortgage crisis we lived a fairly normal middle class lifestyle, wasn't super wealthy by any means but we weren't struggling and the thought of almost living on the streets never crossed our minds. Regardless no honest hard working Americans should have to resort to living in their vehicles, particularly when the Government can throw billions of dollars in the air like confetti to other countries and illegal immigrants, but can't even solve our own problems, and I get it not all problems can be solved just by throwing money at it, but the current state of the union is very poor.

5 years in incredible hardship. I'm so happy for u that u got accommodation eventually! The problem is rife here in Australia too
@solovantravel you know what they about the word assume.
2020: The problem is people can't afford rent
2024: The problem is people are living in their cars
2028: The problem is people are breathing air and eating food
2032: Why are there even people?
I see where this is going. :-(
Well then, how about quitting the billions overseas for wars to aid other countries and start helping your own citizens!
I blame Airbnb & these stupid corporations coming into our cities buying houses & raising the prices 🤷🏽♀️ They need to put a cap on how many properties ppl can buy period.
AGREED. We need to tax the ever-living-dogshit out of foreigner (non-citizen) property owners. Same goes for citizens who own more than 2 properties. Tax foreigners and real estate hoarders three times what everybody else pays in property taxes.
Very true.
Private equity has also been buying up trailer parks and tripling the rents! People are arguing about being able to live in their cars but the real enemy is the terrible way the ownership of residential property has gone into insanely greedy hands
California also does not zone for low income housing to meet the needs of low income citizens. But everyone working at the restaurants you frequent are low-income. Why make the poorest class of people take on such a burden as commuting? Being snobby towards poor people is what Republicans do. Apparently Democrat states, too. Remember the low-income folks rent apartments. You left them out of your talk about houses.
thats socialism. move to canada is u like that system
Most of the time people don't "choose" to live in their cars or the streets. There are several reasons why this happens. Some people have no clue what they are talking about
Reminds me of the story about luxury picnic planners in San Diego who felt entitled to occupy public beaches with their gazebos. Public beach parking lots aren't camp grounds. There are plenty of places to park your vehicle and live in it, but they aren't usually on beachfront property with a multi-million dollar views. Vagrancy like squatting spreads like cancer if left unchecked. It's strange that they highlighted a guy who makes $1000 daily as the poster boy of this story. Enforce the laws police, judges, DAs!
Shitty pay affects everyone eventually.
Well, making owning a house impossible, cant even sleep in our own cars? Ridiculous!
@@MrsPicklesIsHome I'm a vanlifer and I agree. I don't stay anywhere longer than a few days and never park anywhere I'm not allowed even if it means driving a hundred miles to find a place I am. In addition to my day job that's 100% remote, I own a business and a lot of my customers don't mind if I park in their lot overnight. It's added security for them. Also I'm 100% self contained as are most other vanlifers I know of. I've never seen a vanlifer peeing outside their vehicle. I've seen plenty of homeless people do it, all around the country. Vanlifers aren't 'homeless' they are 'houseless', there's a freaking difference. Just because you're a slave to your 30 year mortgage, don't blame us.
The people on SSI are being starved out and no one sees it....
Right now my choices are car or home....I can't walk very far...
Meds or food ...food stamps says I make to much at 800 a month and gives me 20$ I've worked all my life and have payed in way more than I'll ever get....
I am a trucker and live in my truck most of the time the problem is, is that one jerk makes everybody look bad. Everybody doesn’t get out of your truck or their van and piss in the parking lot but that’s the story that’s the sum of the story that somebody was pissing all over somebody’s happy place. Good job.
And that one person has no shame. Doesn’t clean their dick or hands.
There should be no controversy. People have the right to live in dignity and freedom.
@MrsPicklesIsHome Yes. Living in dignity!! Incase it has slipped your mind many Americans are struggling to afford housing in 2024. If you do the math, you'll see that in order to afford an apartment @$1300.00 per month as well as the landlords demands on × 3 monthly income you'll see that one must make 4000 dollars per month to afford that. That's $30.00 an hour income. Do the math. Don't sit on here trying to act like a jerk.
@MrsPicklesIsHome it appears that you don't have respect for people who just want to survive. They deserve to survive as well. Where would you like people to go who don't make $30.00 per hour @ 40 hours every week? Seriously where ??? Ignorance at its finest.
@MrsPicklesIsHome and $1300.00 a month is a cheaper version of what the rents are like out here. Many places it's almost 2 grand a month.
They can't stop me. Famous last words.
The man is wrong 99% of the people living in cars did not chose that to live that way.
Not just affordable homes, campsites are as expensive as mortgage payments😢
Not everyone want to waste their life always working till you’re 70 years old. I see old people working in stores right now looking like they’re not gonna make it to the next day all just because you want a house constantly paying rent for something you’re never own or paying your mortgage off and still gotta pay taxes on it
FREE COUNTRY MY AS
Lower the rent and people might live in a house 🤷
impossible...its dictated by free market forces
This is a symptom of low wage jobs with no benefits or pension for a retirement and few housing options. It has created a nomadic subculture within the US. As a result we now have some people drifting around the country picking up odd jobs. What else are they to do? Society demands they show respect, but society doesn’t respect them.
Littering should be a crime but living in any sort of structure or vehicle you want should not. Theyre not bothering you so leave them alone. If they arent breaking into your property there shouldnt be a problem.
Expect more of it.
Expense of houses to rent prices going up.
Plus people losing their jobs.
Companies, corportions laying off and those replacing them with migrants.
Crazy they would create a law to prevent people from sleeping in their cars, while also trying to fix the homelessness crisis. Why not just designate safe parking zones in non-residential areas around the city? Maybe even charge a small permit fee? Instead, they move straight toward criminalization.
because if it makes sense the government does the opposite.....sadly in Canada it's the same they don't want people sleeping in their vehicles nor make it accommodating SMH.....
@@ataglance556 and when they created safe space to park these greedy fat cats will ask for a higher fee to park..
So long as they keep raising rent, ridiculous levels, I don’t give a shit what the city says. I pay my taxes and I’ll park and live on the street if I want.
We have entered crazy land. People want homeless citizens gone while cheering for homeless immigrants to come into their communities.
Very good point.
They want to pay people like dirt but not see the results of it
Most people are not cheering for homeless immigrants. It's getting shoved down our throats by a tiny but powerful out of control federal government.
@joekev27 Why? What is the point of you posting such idiotic hyperbole? Is it because your parents are each others brother and sister?
@@JebusHypocristosX "Jski" posts idiotic shit like that, because he doesn't have enough integrity to talk shit from behind his real name and never has to have accountability for his belligerence. He is either a coward or a Russian, but either way, not worth anybody's time.
There are different levels of Van life. Weekend travelers, retirees that can’t afford rents, families that lost their homes, people that are saving to buy a home, and people that are barely making. You just can’t legislate yourself out of the right of life, liberty and justice.
I'm not choosing to live in my car. Give me an affordable apartment then. Until then, if I'm not bothering anyone or doing anything nasty like public urination, then shut up and stay in your nice home.
Many of the people complaining will be out on the street themselves shortly
EXACTLY
We should make friends! See you soon! 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
......and they will still think they are above everyone else while fighting Boxcar Willy for that shopping cart.
Why will they be in the street soon?
You got people who choose to leave in their cars…. And you got people who didn’t choose to leave in their car…. The economy has destroyed many people lives… and people need to be more considerate before making comments about the homeless people who are sleeping on their cars….!
I agree! So many of them HAD NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE!!
Many working class people are forced to live in vehicles because rent is wayyyy to high. My house payment was $375/mo in 2008 when I purchased this house new. I could rent it for $1500/mo today. That’s ridiculous!
Would you rather they pitch a tent in the neighborhood park? Most Van Lifers just park for 1 or 2 nights and move on.
People need shelter so if a vehicle is what they can afford, I'm not against that. I do think they should respect the laws and neighborhoods, however. They shouldn't be trashing the areas, urinating in public, or doing anything disrespectful or disgusting. Cities need to designate enough areas where the vanlifers are allowed to park overnight.
Regardless no honest hard working Americans should have to resort to living in their vehicles, particularly when the Government can throw billions of dollars in the air like confetti to other countries and illegal immigrants, but can't even solve our own problems, and I get it not all problems can be solved just by throwing money at it, but the current state of the union is very poor.
how u guys doing now?
Yes. The leave no trace rules should always be followed.
There are already bylaws about those things, and plenty of information on the internet about how to live in a vehicle without being objectionable
I use to live on the road in a bus, I think everyone should experience having a hard time in life, it would make some people more compassionate. But not everyone no. The rich man always b1tchin about the poor man needing somewhere to law for the night, I wouldn't want to live around FL too many boi karens.
People. How can people think it's OK to stop others from living the way they want? The rents and everything keeps going up ! America is becoming a horrible place to be!
