  • In this video my dad and I will show you the full process of what it's like repairing a fiberglass hood from a rolled semi truck. This fiberglass hood came from a local trucking company that needed a new loaner hood. This video will show how much work really goes into doing fiberglass and body work since I show every step that we did to get the end result.

    y'all
    scuff it down and use 50 grit 2in discs on air tool to feather out your damage..
    then lay down your glass work.. make sure to "dig" into glass and replicate surrounding thickness... try to slightly extend from the damage area out... when fiberglass breaks it kinda spreads out because of the bi-axle of the fiberglass or multi direction of strands so it likes to crawl etc.. anyways
    use 80 grit to knock down the glass work get it close and use GUIDE COAT to get it flat...
    then you can wipe it down and fare it out with filler.. then I usually hit it with 80grit again real quick to knock that top layer off gummy ness off then start working your way up to 180-220... at that point check your bodywork etc.. .. then your ready for primer...
    now this depends on how much bodywork was done and how badass of a job your trying to get.. but sometimes you'll need to use high build primer and block out that primer first then shoot a finish primer and guide coat that and block it up to 600 and your ready to go... also you can use a red or grey scotch pad on riveting or edges or corners and such that are hard to get with sandpaper. PREP IS EVERYTHING 99% PREP... I work on boats not cars or trucks.. been painting boats and doing custom glass work for 10 years now im about to do my 2500 12 valve soon and my little Dakota im gonna try and get it on here... just never been good with the YT stuff and editing the video. Awesome video btw great work. the glass work was done very well and properly done. loved the content. 🤙✌ follow me on inst @fiberglassworkz

    What is the body filler you used for the big holes before applying the fiber glass called ?

    • @tjvalleygarage
      @tjvalleygarage  22 дні тому +2

      It is fiber reinforced body filler or “kitty hair” as it’s called

      Thank you! We initially didn’t expect people to follow along with the video like a tutorial as it was kind of meant for entertainment lol
      Anyway the grits we used: 40 grit for the fiberglass, 80 for yellow filler, 120 on white finishing putty, 180 before primer, blocked primer with 320 then painted 👍

      We first put on yellow Rage Gold filler which is basic body filler than we finished with white icing putty. Hope that helps

      @@tjvalleygarage I won't use Fiberglass anymore to repair a hood because of the release agent they use in the mold at the factory. Back in the 80's my Dad and I used it to repair hoods on trucks and it held up... They changed the mold process sometime in the 80's and fiberglass will not hold up on the newer hoods. I use Fuser T21 with fiberglass mat to do repairs now. I see so many truck hoods and also cut out a lot fiberglass repair jobs because the polyester resin does not hold up due the curing process. Not trying to knock down your video. You and your father spent a lot time on this project repair and did a great job. I want you to check out the job that was done on that Kenworth hood in the next 6 months. Look for signs of separation of the repair that was done. I'm just curious if it held up.
