Once again queen, I'm gonna recommend "Incendies" Last i saw it was on prime and that movie left me feeling dead inside the next day at work lol. Go in completely blind!
Not a spoiler warning, but an opinion warning I watched this movie last night based on your comments recommendation, so firstly thank you! (I also went into it completely blind) Good movie, 7/10, enjoyable plot and great overall story. However, as someone who genuinely loves disturbing/psychological mind altering movies.. this was not one of them. It was of course shocking during one or two particular scenes but so so mild compared to some of the other movies I’ve seen in these comment sections for example ‘irresistible’ the French movie. Now that was disturbing. Overall enjoyable watch so thank you. However, if you are like myself and really want to be shocked this movie might not be for you.
Yay! Mommy made the list. Love the Oasis Wonderwall scene on the skateboard. Never will I be as emotionally affected by an aspect ratio change. (Wutang75)
I just watched Dancer in the Dark today, and I swear it BROKE me. It broke my heart; it broke my soul. It’s just so devastatingly melancholy all around. You can’t help to feel pain for all the main characters in the story, but even more so for Selma (played by Bjork).
@@robertpetre9378 Lars von Trier is known to make his actresses suffer; both Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst had somewhat similar experiences with von Trier. This is a known fact. Kubrick did the same thing with Shelley Duvall. The difference though is that with Bjork it became a battle of wills; both were used to getting their way and von Trier indicted that working with her was like "working with a terrorist." She would show up days late to the shooting and she wanted her final say in the way the product turned out to be. It's sort of a two-sided deal. Now I am fans of both (von Trier and Bjork), and I'm not saying one side was worse than the other; I wasn't there but I've heard the stories from both and neither one is more angelic than the other.
I'm a Bjork fan. I had the first Sugar Cubes on cassette. Yup, old fart. That said, I just watched Dancer in the Dark a few months back. Love it. I always felt protective of Bjork. attachment disorder is so hard to deal with irl and putting the kid away would make it so much worse it starts from not bonding with anyone as an infant on.
Great movie. Don't know if it would ruin anyone's day but great Olivia Coleman/Peter Mullan performances and Paddy Considine having a go in the director's chair, showing a lot of what he learned from his work with Shane Meadows. 👍 🤔I'll shoehorn in A Room For Romeo Brass, while we're on it. Ok Emma...I'll advocate for this film one more time: Descent into Darkness: My European Nightmare. I promise you, you will LOVE this film as you and I share a passion for the dark and the disturbing! Keep up the great (and twisted) work!
Watching Close two years ago at my local film festival was truly an experience. Complete silence during the credits except for the sniffles coming from all directions (and my own). Belgian movie though! Not French.
@@schmuelking1535it was not horror!! That was a toxic relationship!! I just got done with the film! It was amazing but disappointed he kept the hoodie in the end. “It’s the real deal” msg with it was so ironic 😅

Yay! I'm so glad you watched On the Edge and liked it. I feel honoured ❤ Close was so good. I still think about it regularly after watching it. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Mommy is one of my favorite movies ever (Xavier Dolan is a genius)! It's not disturbing at all, but hyper-emotional and incredibly beautiful. The moment all the main characters are just casually dancing in the kitchen because they feeling it is a pure joy captured on camera.
I watched a movie with my mum yesterday called "Sybil" (1976 version), which my mum remembers watching on the TV when it aired back then, it was a two part TV movie but you can watch the full thing (approx 3 hours in total). It was absolutely heartbreaking and heartwarming, based on a true story of a woman who had 16 personalities (known as multiple personality disorder) due to childhood trauma. I really recommend it, brilliant movie, Sally Fields acting is top class!
Amazing video! Always fun to have more film recs in this domain - one of the great things about film is how far it can push our emotions, even if that’s in a gruelling sense. I figure I’ll throw my hat in the ring with a recommendation with a South Korean drama I saw a couple years ago called Next Sohee. I’ve not stopped thinking about it since - truly one of the hardest watches I’ve ever endured, and an undeniable modern masterpiece.
I've become aware of so many different titles watching these videos, thank you! I'm intrigued about On The Edge. I'll leave the titles of some disturbing films that I've enjoyed through the years: Harmonium (2016), Breathe (2014) and As Bestas (2022)
I was expecting disturbing films but got a lot of heartbreaking ones! I’ve seen Close, and Mommy and they’re both on my all-time favorite films. Thanks for these!
thanks! yeah its meant to be both! disturbing films that are so amazing they are worth watching but also disturbing, that tends to result in heart break! sounds like you have a type! haha
"Close" just broke my heart - such a beautiful but sad movie. I've mentioned before Emma, but Nil By Mouth (1997) is one of the most disturbing and anxiety inducing movies I've ever seen and has stayed with me after all these years. Ray Winstone & Kathy Burke give incredible performances and it truly is such a nail-biting experience.
Was the movie “Compliance” mentioned already?? I will never forget that movie, still enrages me to this day. One of the most disturbing movies I’ve EVER seen besides Eden Lake.
Emma, I saw Close in theaters and I went in completely blind. Was just watching it because of the Oscars. I was also a mess for half the movie and was inconsolable for the following week. It was so bad my husband was concerned lol This movie is literally my Roman Empire
Love this series!! We gotta keep it going. My contribution would be The Mudge Boy (2003). I originally watched it for kicks because one of my friends was in a scene for like 2 seconds, but I was NOT ready for what this film really was. Really worth the watch.
my partner and I have very different tastes (as in, he doesn't like horror like I do) but he saw Close on Stan the other day and was raving about how amazing it is. I am not sure I can face it though.
I always look forward to these videos (which might be concerning lol). Not just for your recommendations but also checking the comments for more!) I believe Chilla's Art created a video game based on the true story of Nobody Knows. So heartwrenching.
Great list Emma! Xavier Dolan made an emotionally devastating series on netflix called The Night Logan Woke Up where he plays an addict from a dysfunctional family that reunites when their mother dies. It was so well done.
Just watched Femme, and I loved it! I was scared, repulsed, compelled, and maybe even hopeful. Awesome. Have you ever seen Red, white and blue from Simon rumley on amc plus? That movie broke and devastated me. I truly admire Excision as well, for all the feelings it brings up in me while watching. Thanks for the great list!
People say things like "This film broke me," quite a bit, but _Dear Zachary_ actually did break me. I was not okay, in the slightest, when that film ended. And just when you think it's gotten as bad as it can get, it just got worse.
A few recommendations based on the films shown at Grimmfest in Manchester this year. Most don't have wide release yet, but to check out when they do: - Bleeding, which uses vampirism as a metaphor for the opioid crisis - Succubus, a sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing online dating horror - M, a post-apocalyptic North Macedonian film which won best film at the festival Also from last year's Grimmfest and now available on Amazon Prime, The Coffee Table. It's a comedy, but with the darkest premise possible. And Agnes Varda's Vagabond, which isn't horror at all but is bleak and sad.
Hello Emma, love the channel. Really enjoy your ardent and analytical approach. I expect you've seen it, but Nicolas Roeg's Bad Timing is one of the most beautifully disturbing movies I know. Gradual, elliptical reconstruction of an inexorable death spiral relationship. Tremendous work from Theresa Russell and Art Garfunkel, the latter well embodying an insidious, controlling male fragility. The climax is excruciating. For me, Roeg's best, even considering Walkabout and Don't Look Now. (I was happy to learn from her Criterion Closet appearance that it's a favorite of Isabelle Huppert's...)
Feed - this is a very disturbing movie written by and staring Alex O'Loughlin. I've seen articles from him where he is very proud of this movie. It was not what I was expecting at all.
I don’t know if this has been recommended before but “The war zone” (directed by Tim Roth and starring Ray Winstone and Tilda Swinton) is a hard watch due to the subject matter exploring incest, I apologise in advance
Another great list giving me more disturbing content to watch. 😁 I just found a disturbing movie by accident last week called "Late Night Trains (or The Night Train Murders in other countries.) It's a Italian film from 1974 that's similar to the original Last House On The Left. Be fair warned if you decide to watch it the SA scene on the train is one of the most brutal things I've ever seen I was in shock and tears.
Funny, I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Oh, that top suits her.", and then you bring it up right away! 😝 Also, I actually hadn't heard of any of these recs, so thanks for that! Will make note.
I keep meaning to recommend this one: DEATH AND THE MAIDEN with Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. It's a strange kind of insidious, and how you feel about what's happening will swing wildly from one scene to the next. It's set up like a three-person play (it may have actually been that originally), and it's just unlike anything else I've ever watched. Another absolutely devastating movie: BOY A starring Andrew Garfield. It's based on a notorious case in the UK and it is just gut-wrenching. A Canadian recommendation: BLINDNESS from director Don McKellar. A spectacular cast (Mark Ruffalo! Julianne Moore! Danny Glover!) and a really dark, messed up movie adapted from Jose Saramago's novel. I feel like you may have talked about Tim Roth's THE WAR ZONE before, but if I'm misremembering, you absolutely have to ruin more than just your day with that one. I'm seconding the other commenters' recs for INCENDIES and TYRANNOSAUR, too!
Omg you found Close, happy to hear you had a good cry! My biggest cry was at the end of Magnolia, where all the stories are combined/concluded, especially the old man on his deathbed (no spoiler) because it hits close to home. If anyone has a recommendation for a movie of that kind.. please let me know! Another movie I found disturbing, full of dread, though not as sad as the ones on this list: An Affair (2018], a Norwegian film about a female teacher getting a bit too close to one of her male high school students after just becoming a teacher in his class. It has a less serious tone than the ones on these past 2 lists, but I enjoyed the tension a whole lot! It shocked me with how far it goes.
A Finnish friend brought me to see the play adaptation of Purge. I've seen hundreds of plays, and to this day, it is the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in a theatre (and probably in general). The venue was super small, we were at the back but it was literally like being inches from the stage. The tension was UNREAL, at some point there was an unexpected sound effect and the girl sitting next to me literally SCREAMED, which scared everyone to death lol There's a horrifying scene (might be the one Emma is talking about? I haven't seen the movie though) that is actually not played out, it starts as shown on a small screen and then it's just suggested, but it was so well-done that I have to keep reminding myself I haven't seen, I just think I have. I would have never imagined to hear this title on one Emma's videos! ❤
That movie has one of the saddest endings that I've ever seen. Actually, "Seconds" is deeply sad, through the whole film, the more that I think about it, but it's definitely powerful and disturbing. I've had the Criterion Blu-ray for years, but I've only been able to bring myself to watch it twice.
Idk if you have covered this but Calibre was one of the most intense viewings I’ve had. While not extremely disturbing I feel that it fits well enough into this category of video
Great video. I need to recommend the little-seen 2006 German film, "Requiem" starring a young Sandra Hüller in a heart-breaking performance. A secular take on demonic possession and mental illness, very moving. Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid. Also, the extremely moving and thoroughly depressing "Lilja 4-Ever", directed by Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson. I was in tears 15 minutes in. Unrelenting and beautiful.
As always a solid list and I haven't seen or heard of all of these. You've probably seen or heard of A Horrible Way to Die (2010) but either way it fits this series. A real downer.
Great stuff as usual ! I was gonna try and help you figure out the school year in Close but it seems like it's Belgian and i do *not* understand Belgium's school system 😭 so if someone else knows if middle & high school are combined over there or what's going on, please lmk Looking forward to your thoughts on "It's What's Inside" - personally i really liked it. I watched it solely for ADC ngl, i didn't even know the premise before going in lmao I know you like AI movies so i was wondering if CTRL (2024) is on your radar at all ?
There's (optional) kindergarten until 5y, then primary school from 6y through 11y, then secondary school from 12y through 18y. Close is a gorgeous film. Devastating for sure but at the same time very soft and warm.
Love Mommy, mummy 😆🤪 but seriously great film. Also have you seen Carnosaur 2 (1995)? Don't need to see the first imo, different stories but it's basically an R-rated gory Jurrasic Park type but it's disturbing with some of the gore. It's kind of a B-movie but the gore in it gave me nightmares when I was a wee lad 😂
One film that disturbed me is Hungry Hearts. It stars Adam Driver. I don't know if it would be as disturbing for everybody. It feels very intimate, and the relationships between the characters in the movie can be unnerving. I feel like you would enjoy it.
Hello Beauty, here are two more movies for you to 🍿 🎥 1.) We Were Children 2012 1 hour 28 minutes. Directed by: Tim Wolochatiuk 2.) Boys of St. Vincent TV Movie 1992 Directed by: John N. Smith FYI …..⚠️ Trigger Warning for both ⚠️ Love your videos. Sending cold Canadian love.
Oh Emma thank you once again for some nre suggestions :) I recommend you to eatch Bully (2001) I eontbelieve Ive heard you talk about rhst one but I was really amazed how dark that film was
A bit of an odd recommendation, but the movie "The Bothersome Man" from 2006 is a bit disturbing and a bit weird. I haven't seen the same consept in another film.
I want to recomend "Polisse" by Maïwenn... disturbing for sure ... for me it also turn out to be even much more interesting when I found out that Maïwenn was a 16 year old girl when she married a 30+ year old man (who turn out to be Luc Besson...)
I feel like no one talks about the 1994 movie fresh. If you could find you should totally check it out! It’s not your typical disturbing movie but I feel like it fall into that category of just plain out sad, depressing and disturbing in certain aspects.
Yay another awesome list. Holiday (2018) is one I think I might have mentioned before, just make sure you don't watch the censored that used to be on Amazon 😆It's a prickly one but I think it gives you plenty to chew on.
Hi Emma! I don’t know if you’ve covered this in any of your previous disturbing lists, (I suppose I can scour through your past videos) but if you haven’t seen In a Glass Cage directed by Agustí Villaronga, you may want to check it out.
My pick for a disturbing movie is Na Hong-Jin's The Chaser. He's best known for The Wailing, but The Chaser is a fantastic piece of work. The film is about an ex cop and pimp who realizes that one of his women is being held captive by a serial killer. The film is an "up all night" action thriller set in the seedy underbelly of Seoul as he runs around trying to find the man's house and save his employee before it's too late. It's very disturbing and has some real gut punch moments, in the best possible way.
You've probly seen it but "The Divide" with Michael biehn is a really bleak/disturbing film that I think is amazing. Also marfa girl and marfa girl 2 ( 2 specifically fucked me up after watching because I'm a dad ) And if you get a chance "Mercy" from 2000 with Ellen barkin.
@spookyastronauts ooooooo the divide will ruin your week, but you'll love it. Marfa girl 1 and 2 are larry clark joints ( kids, bully, ken Park) and it's kind of a "slice of life" with a raw edge.
If you haven’t seen the short film ”The Disappearance of Willie Bingham” (available on UA-cam) you really have to check it out! It is though-provoking, bleak and really disturbing. Just the way you (we) like it! 😉 I would also like to recommend one of the most, if not THE MOST, disturbing documentaries I have ever seen - made by an Aussie (!) but filmed in Denmark - ”Into The Deep”. One of the most disturbing aspects about the film is that it was NOT suppose to be a True Crime- documentary from the start. What was intended to be a film about a creative genius turned out to be crucial evidence in a court case that shocked the nation. That’s all I’m gonna say… *insert ominous music here*
Watch "The Tale" starring Laura Dern as an adult (mis-)remembering a childhood abusive situation, if you haven't already. It gets across how something really wrong and twisted can seem positive to a victim if the predator does the grooming carefully.
Sybil 1976 tv movie is one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. The 2007 remake is disturbing, too. I consider them both horror movies, especially IF the story is indeed true. Wow. I believe seeing the movie at such a young age set me on the path of being a horror movie/true crime lover. Ps. My parents would not let me watch it, but I hid watching in the hallway and had a perfect view of the television, lol🖤
@@spookyastronauts Are you kidding me? I recently ran into my Psychology high school teacher from years ago and chided him for showing me that film as it scarred me for life, only to find out it was fabricated (?)I have never felt such a mix of relief and resentment.😠 I demand retribution for years of therapy! Thank you though, for providing me with a little more peace of mind🙏
I just went and watched no child of mine. You were right, even though this is a TV movie its one of the most shocking and gut wrenching films I've seen in a long time, and to find out it's a true story is just an extra kick in the gut. #justiceforkerry
Please watch Elephant if you haven’t yet. It quickly became a favorite of mine with how dark and beautifully shot it was. Sadly, it’s far too realistic and more relevant as time passes.
@@justheretocommentokdontwan685 definitely, I just watched zero day and found it great, although I love found footage I do prefer elephant for its Kubrick-eque style.
I always bring up the green elephant when you ask for disturbing movies cause it's the only one i can think of that i haven't heard you talk about, it's not really a good movie and its mostly just gross
Forgive me if it's already been mentioned, but please check out "The Nightingale" (2018) staring the incredible Aisling Francoisin. It's one of the most brutal, heartbreaking movies I've ever seen but the power of the protagonists keeps you hanging on with them till the bitter end!
Once again queen, I'm gonna recommend "Incendies"

I don’t know if this has been recommended before but “The war zone” (directed by Tim Roth and starring Ray Winstone and Tilda Swinton) is a hard watch due to the subject matter exploring incest, I apologise in advance
Yes! I have covered it before. Very intense
Another great list giving me more disturbing content to watch. 😁
I just found a disturbing movie by accident last week called "Late Night Trains (or The Night Train Murders in other countries.) It's a Italian film from 1974 that's similar to the original Last House On The Left. Be fair warned if you decide to watch it the SA scene on the train is one of the most brutal things I've ever seen I was in shock and tears.
Nobody Knows just destroys you. The cruelty of the mom. If you like Koreeda please check out Monster and Shoplifters
Funny, I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Oh, that top suits her.", and then you bring it up right away! 😝
Also, I actually hadn't heard of any of these recs, so thanks for that!
Thanks for the recommendations I’ve spoken about most of these but definitely not the first one
Another one is a short called Apaches. I saw an interview with Edgar Wright where it talked about how it affected him as child 😕
More a rockabilly vibe. Very cute. Always interested in expanded lists!
It’s my birthday today, so sorry, disclaimer:
This list won’t ruin my day. It’ll actually improve it even more 😁
Thank you again, Emma.
Happy birthday 🎉
Happy birthday!
"Seconds" (1966), starring Rock Hudson. Way ahead of its time, and DEFINITELY disturbing!!
Seconded.
@@rpgc61 I see what you did there!
I'm so glad to see you mention On The Edge. I love this film so much!
Idk if you have covered this but Calibre was one of the most intense viewings I’ve had. While not extremely disturbing I feel that it fits well enough into this category of video
yes i have! so good
I always know there are going to be additons to the watch list when you put these out...I actually haven't seen any of these! :)
Don’t know if you’ve already seen it…but I honestly found “Bastard Out Of Carolina” disturbing.
I could only watch it once, years ago.
Awesome 🙌
Awesome list again!
Not sure if you've ever covered it, or if it's disturbing enough, but I thought Sister my Sister from 1994 was disturbing.
Happy Halloween Emma! 🎃 👻 🦇
I feel like your channel is under appreciated you deserve more views
thank you
Great video.
Great video spooky!! I can recommend you as a disturbing movie The 7th Continent by Michael Haneke, one of the saddest endings ive ever seen
As always a solid list and I haven't seen or heard of all of these. You've probably seen or heard of A Horrible Way to Die (2010) but either way it fits this series. A real downer.
Hi Emma!!! It’s been a long time, ever since we talked. Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll take a look at it. Happy Halloween
Great stuff as usual ! I was gonna try and help you figure out the school year in Close but it seems like it's Belgian and i do *not* understand Belgium's school system 😭 so if someone else knows if middle & high school are combined over there or what's going on, please lmk
Looking forward to your thoughts on "It's What's Inside" - personally i really liked it. I watched it solely for ADC ngl, i didn't even know the premise before going in lmao
I know you like AI movies so i was wondering if CTRL (2024) is on your radar at all ?
😊great review emma
I read purge as a book and loved it, didnt realize its made as a film too
Your disturbing movie lists are the best/worst 😂
Recommendation: Polish movie Suicide Room (2011), hopefully it makes the next video 🖤
Your recommendations are the ones I trust in wholeheartedly! Thanks!
One film that disturbed me is Hungry Hearts. It stars Adam Driver. I don't know if it would be as disturbing for everybody. It feels very intimate, and the relationships between the characters in the movie can be unnerving. I feel like you would enjoy it.
Hello Beauty, here are two more movies for you to 🍿 🎥
1.) We Were Children
2012 1 hour 28 minutes.
Directed by: Tim Wolochatiuk
2.) Boys of St. Vincent
TV Movie 1992
Directed by: John N. Smith
FYI …..⚠️ Trigger Warning for both ⚠️
Love your videos. Sending cold Canadian love.
Oh Emma thank you once again for some nre suggestions :)
I recommend you to eatch Bully (2001) I eontbelieve Ive heard you talk about rhst one but I was really amazed how dark that film was
Close 2022 is exceptional.
Hey Emma, not sure if others have mentioned it but your spooky astronauts intro doesn't seem to have it's audio. Fantastic video all the same though!!
Oh damn thanks for letting me know! Must have been my country intro haha
A bit of an odd recommendation, but the movie "The Bothersome Man" from 2006 is a bit disturbing and a bit weird. I haven't seen the same consept in another film.
A beautiful heart wrenching tragic foreign film Cherry Blossoms. I wish you would watch it. You will LOVE IT.
Unsurprisingly this actually Made my day better!
No child of mine broke me.
Hi Emma! I don’t know if you’ve covered this in any of your previous disturbing lists, (I suppose I can scour through your past videos) but if you haven’t seen In a Glass Cage directed by Agustí Villaronga, you may want to check it out.
Yes I have! Very disturbing!
Yes I love the chaser! I’ve covered it before, amazing movie ❤
I don’t wanna cry! 😢
Woahhhh so co that you put Mommy on this list!
Thanks Emma I'm going to look these up
You've probly seen it but "The Divide" with Michael biehn is a really bleak/disturbing film that I think is amazing.
Also marfa girl and marfa girl 2 ( 2 specifically fucked me up after watching because I'm a dad )
And if you get a chance "Mercy" from 2000 with Ellen barkin.
Thanks for the recommendations! I think I may have seen mercy but not the others
It is
though-provoking, bleak and really disturbing. Just the way you (we) like it! 😉
I would also like to recommend one of the most, if not THE MOST, disturbing
documentaries I have ever seen - made by an Aussie (!) but filmed in Denmark - ”Into The Deep”. One of the most disturbing aspects about the film is that it was NOT suppose to be a True Crime-
documentary from the start.
The book is good! That’s where I started but then all the info about her lying came out and it kind of ruined it for me
@@spookyastronauts Are you kidding me? I recently ran into my Psychology high school teacher from years ago and chided him for showing me that film as it scarred me for life, only to find out it was fabricated (?)I have never felt such a mix of relief and resentment.😠 I demand retribution for years of therapy! Thank you though, for providing me with a little more peace of mind🙏
I just went and watched no child of mine. You were right, even though this is a TV movie its one of the most shocking and gut wrenching films I've seen in a long time, and to find out it's a true story is just an extra kick in the gut. #justiceforkerry
Omg Nobody Knows stressed me out so much. I wanted to be like HOW DARE YOU ABANDON THESE POOR CHILDREN ARGGG
Please watch Elephant if you haven’t yet. It quickly became a favorite of mine with how dark and beautifully shot it was. Sadly, it’s far too realistic and more relevant as time passes.
Yeah both that movie and the short film that it was inspired by are intresting, zero day is another pretty disturbing one on the same topic
@@justheretocommentokdontwan685 definitely, I just watched zero day and found it great, although I love found footage I do prefer elephant for its Kubrick-eque style.
yes ive seen it! i watched it back in highschool which is wild.
Violence Voyager / the burning buddha man
Have you seen “Memoir of a Snail 🐌”? Definitely not a family friendly claymation film. Might just make it to this list in the next go-around.
its an australian film! i skipped it because his last film really depressed me.
Watch Playground (2016) True Story.. I’ll never forget this movie. It tore me to shreds.
I spoke about it in the video this is a part 2 for 😅
@@spookyastronautsthis is a completely different film called Playground.. from 2016
@@zacgale4231 is it called Plac zabaw? That’s the only similar one I can find from your description
@@spookyastronautsYES! that’s the one.
I'm gonna recommend "Song Lang" (2018) from Vietnam. Would love to hear your thoughts!
I dunno if finding an equally sick friend is a risk I'd be willing to take. I suppose I could call my mom.....
Another 5 for my watchlist
I love these videos
