I feel like I read something like this in outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Basically when you look at who researchers who weren't at the top of their class in Harvard and compared them to people were scored similarly on standardised tests (but were at less prestigious universities) the second group on average produced more accepted papers per year. This is despite being of a similar level of competence and intelligence. The logic was it's better to be a big fish in a little pond because a little fish in a big pond isn't motivated
