      muscle imbalance is normal since our body is not perfectly symmetric i mean if your dominant hand is your right hand then your right hand is stronger and bigger than your left hand not just your hand but the whole right side of your body my right eye brow is a lot thicker than my left eyebrow same to my eyelashes also to my pubic hair and also to my muscle but if you have a extreme muscle imbalances you have a problem to your spine maybe scoliosis or any other health conditions

    I have always felt just the upper part of the lat just under my armpit, a tiny bit of muscle the day before chin ups/pull ups. I have never felt my lower lat the day after, which I suppose is what I should be feeling. I have just tried this for the first time, helping myself with squeezing the bar inwards. It is true that it pushes the elbow a little bit closer to my back. I still don't know if I am doing it correctly, but hopefully I have improved my technique a bit. I can barely do 3 like that, while previously as many as 10, using my usual technique. I still might be using too much chest throughout the movement for some reason, we will see.

    • @kingnashramos9990
      @kingnashramos9990 3 роки тому +2

      i think your doing it right bro since lats is connected to tricpes
      in my experience i build my lats using pull up and chin up and dumbbell row for lower lats

  • @WorkoutUnionPT
    @WorkoutUnionPT 5 років тому +36

    Good tip! And that's the right way, because you're getting more shoulder extension and adduction, that are the 2 of 3 functions of the lats, and then having a greater contraction! Well done!

The last two nights for a few minutes I worked on what you taught me. Tonight, after finishing my shift of 4X12's...I just hit 8 of the most power pull-ups I've ever felt. I will get my planche yet! I’m 65 years old and have gone in three months from zero pull-ups to 4 from a dead hang. But I have not been able to do more because I think I’m depending more on my biceps than my back.. That twist grip you demonstrated feels like it might be the answer to my problem. I’m going to the gym in an hour. We’ll see how it works out!

    • @richardhbocking1278
      @richardhbocking1278 3 роки тому +7

      The twist grip, or as you put it, gripping as though trying to bend the bar, I think did the trick. First, the tight grip brings the upper part of the body alive. Second, the bending action forces the elbows close to the trunk which, if I’m correct, forces the shoulders down. This causes the back muscles to react by pushing up. Am I describing this accurately? At any rate, I progressed from four to five reps. The next session, six. Hoping to get seven today. My goal is to be a 65 year old who can execute 15 smooth authoritative pull-ups. Again, this video is very helpful indeed.

      Imo it depends much more on the body alignment than the grip width

    • @Who_Does
      @Who_Does 3 роки тому +1

      makes sense, wider grip would target the muscles going inward the spine which is what is shown first in this video.
      Narrow grip would focus on biceps, forearms, and lats more. because it's more like a vertical movement.

Is it ok to just try to get the chin over the bar even if we lose retraction and with not the best technique?

      I believe hypertrophy(by no means am I an expert) but one clue in would be when he said “mind muscle connection” since typically that’s ideal for building/working the intended muscle specifically. Though I’m sure if u focused on lats and built then the end result is being strong enough to increase weight on pull-ups.

    Nah bro the main reason people don't feel lats in pullups is simply just that they have *too high* lat insertion points in their spines (in other words, their lats *don't even come close* to touching their pelvis!). Likewise higher insertion points = fibers more horizontally-oriented = less optimal (crappy) pull-angle for the lat-arm tendon (basically their lats can't pull "down" as much ☹☹☹ rather, they pull more *"in"* instead. Not what we're seeking but that's how they're anatomically built anyway just saying!!! ☹)
