Sophomore year, 3rd band. This was the last piece we played for our final concert and it was an emotional piece to play for a very emotional day. Our band director who conducted this piece was leaving the school, one of the most fun and laid back out of the three, the favorite director, y'know? This was the last piece he conducted for our band and my best friend of five years at the time was moving away to North Carolina. While playing this piece I cried on those last few measures because to me, it felt like I was playing the end of an era. By far one of my most dear pieces to play to this day.
I have known Larry Daehn since 1980 when we met in New Glarus, WI. He is among the kindest, most gentle, most HUMBLE, and TALENTED people I've ever met! What a joy now to conduct our Wild Rose Community Band in this gorgeous work this coming summer.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. We are playing it in band this year, and while doing homework I listen to this on a loop. It's sooooooo good!
Such a lovely contrast between the horns and the woodwinds, isn't it? Almost like they are singing back and forth to each other. Thank you so much for the compliment!
We played this this year. I was a sophomore, but due to some unique circumstances I stayed in a senior English class most days for one period. They read lord of the flies, and despite not being a member of the class I listened and paid attention to it too. This song perfectly encapsulates that book, the power, but more importantly this song sounds both hopeful and depressing simultaneously. In particular I think it perfectly describes in sound the character of Simon and his story. Great book and great song I will always remember together.
I remember playing this piece in high-school. I believe it was my freshman or sophomore year and we played this amazing song for one of our concerts. I was a tuba player back then
I’m an incoming freshman in high school this summer playing with my town’s community band. Tonight we sight read it and we play it tomorrow evening. That reed texture at 1:01 caught me off guard with its grace and I just leaned on my F attachment a little. Missed my next few notes after that because I was thinking about those “sparkling clarinets.”
I remember playing this song in high school in a spring/final concert of the year. Kind of captures all the neat things that happened during the year for the ones coming back and makes seniors think back on their time in school before everyone goes their separate ways.

I love that the melody is relatively simple, but the overall effect of the dynamics and chords is so powerful. Simply a beautiful song.
He was my high school band teacher and we got to play this after he wrote it. He’s an amazing man!
There simply is NO PERSON WITH A HEART OF GOLD like Larry Daehn!! I have the GREAT HONOR of calling him My Friend (since 1980 when we met)!
All horns rise, for we carry this song
I played second part flute in 7th grade and I still cannot get over how beautiful this song is.
I played this song in my honor band this year in January and I almost cried in the middle of the concert😭
We’re playing this song for my next concert, I play french horn and I just know we’re gonna tear that entrance up 💀

Stately and many teachable moments for upcoming serious musicians. If I was; id let my Middle schoolers make some music with this. DAW
