Rhythm of the Winds
By Frank Erickson
Item: 00-BD00366
Series: Belwin Classic Band
Category: Concert Band
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 4
What a great interplay of rhythms! History will remember this work as one of the most played concert and contest pieces of all time. The alternation of two rhythms---one syncopated and the other an after-beat pattern---form the rhythmic foundation for the work’s theme. This rhythmic pattern has become a staple for many contemporary band compositions. It’s just as classy as it is classic! (5:15)

I had a substitute teacher who looked at this music and laughed. Apparently he used to play this when he was in school and at all the festivals, Frank Erickson would actually come and listened to his own music:D
3:33 is where the chills begin :)
Accurate!!
Proof that music without endless 16th notes at grade 4 can sound good.
Yeah but it’s just endless eighth notes instead
Omg yes Ty for saying that
yeah but this is like grade 3 difficulty imo
played this 3 and a half years ago during my 9th grade year. my favorite year of high school marching band and band in general. this song brings back those memories and how fun life was
The chords at the end make me wanna cry
Every time I played it for a concert I almost did I felt the music way to hard 😭
So when I was in my junior year of high school (2022) we had county band. And I come from a school with a very small band, so being in a room of 200 kids and having every instrument imaginable, we opened up with this song and when I tell you I shed a tear at how beautifully my ears were serenaded that day🥲
The best overworld map music never in a video game
I’m a 9th grader and we played this for our winter concert. We struggled but pulled through.
Did not realize this was at level 4 lol, I love this piece.
what's level 4? I dont know many terms
@@partydue123 like difficulty. .5 being begging and 6 being like really advanced and there’s higher 😩😩
Yet Third Suite is 3.5 lmao
NC lists this as a three.
@@joelfred2900not really, I mean for students yeah, but for any semi professional level musician this is a cakewalk
We chose the songs we wanted for our graduation in 1974 from BDHS in Nokesville, VA. We chose this and Man of La Manca! Love this song! Long live the flute section!
I will never be able to get this song out of my head y’all. It’s so good 😭
2:53 8th grade me (and me today) still hear that as the "Star Wars fill"
I love this piece and the Bass Clarinet part.....OMG! ❤❤❤❤❤😍
I remember playing this song in middle school band. Always liked it.
This piece was my first concert piece for the very first concert I played in junior high school in 1966. I have loved it ever since and am genuinely shocked, surprised and totally delighted that it still exists!!! I'm going to try and get my concert bandmaster to buy it or I'll buy it myself, and see if I could get him to play it as a light piece in one of our concerts.
Wow memories. We played this as incoming freshman during summer band
Played this when in ninth grade along with Erickson's magnum opus, Blue Ridge Overture. Good memories from a horn in F player....
Edit: Star Wars section.... I remember thinking that when we played it, but this piece was composed in 1964..... Maybe it's Star Wars that has a Rhythm of the Winds section.....
Honestly one of my favorite pieces❤️ this, Shenandoah, and arrows
Remember this song from 7th grade I miss them times
You are learning grade 4 pieces in 7th grade?
Sacrilegious Boi kind of a stupid question bc not everyone starts playing an instrument in elementary. some people start in middle school and some people start in high school. not all schools even have a funded music program.
@@dayana-bm9lo I started playing in 6th grade but only for 2 months, then later in 10th and only a few months of 11th. It was fun. marching helped me get a bit fit since all i did was play video games. i miss band
@@mpm_7964 yea they put me in the high school honor band because of how good I sounded on the sax.
but i started playing the sax when I was 10 so I had time to practice before middle school band
My younger brother played this his senior year. That concert made the top rating in UIL, division 1.
I played this song at Chichester Junior High School Concert Band's spring concert in April 1981.
The new Pokemon soundtrack spins amazing ngl
my high school band played this for a national competition though at the time our teacher thought it was a low level 3 we were preforming at level 2 so the judges were fairly impressed with the fact that it was somewhat coherent for context our other pieces were rhythm stand and suite for a band of players, so a fair bit more complicated.
Jasper Schell same I thought this would be 2.5 or 3 but idk how it’s a 4. My band plays songs at a 2.5 or 3 but I feel like we can play this pretty well
what do you mean about level 4 and 2 and such? I dont know what they mean
@@partydue123 I'm referring to the standardized levels of difficulty that the royal conservatory of music assigns to both individual playing skill and the overall difficulty of a piece of music.
@@sairenray0153 Thanks for this little tidbit, i took band in highschool but never learned music theory or many of the terms that you have to learn when you read music so i didnt learn what the level ratings where.
10/10 love this piece
Played this song in concert and I miss it
Nick Wolf same
Sounds like something that would be in Pokémon
currently learning this in syphonic band for the end of a year concert :)

We went to State on this, 1985. This and Pageant.
Practicing for Band
2:19
We played this today for eight reading
2:59 Sounds kinda like Star Wars
I played this at Troy honor band
Same
I remember this being popular for Junior high band competitions back in the 80's
Not sure ..grade 4 means what?
I thought that grade 5 was like larger higher school level for adjudicated events
Which makes me think I dont know the grading system they are using here calling this a grade 4
@turnne When it says "grade" on it, they meant the level of the music whether it's set from Beginner [Grade 1] to Advanced [Grade 4 or higher) concert band
@@dpatterson-64 I am not familiar with this grading system. I am more familiar with say the UIL grading system used in say Texas schools where you have class C and then it moves up by 1, 2, 3,4 ,5...with 5 being larger high school and with works like American Overture for Band, Psalm for Band...but also including more " college" level works such as the Pines Of Rome, Till Eulenspiegel
Back in the day , when I was in high school, there was a level 6 that included the latter works I mentioned
@@dpatterson-64 Ok..I am more familiar with say the grading levels used for UIL performances in Texas. This might be graded as a AA piece there which is suitable for a good junior high school or a small high school band
Sounds like sims music
3:06
Is it just me or does this sound like something that would be in a Peewee movie
hi cypress band

I go to pgms, the middle school right next to it, I’m going they’re next year
