That's for sure brother, thanks! I like the Grizz but, I have to admit I really like running my little Clausing, it just feels better, and threads like a dream! Thanks for watching, Ray
The electric controls are good, no issues, and everything is working great after one year so far. The gibbs are nice, snug, smooth, and no play. The only thing I wish I got with the lathe is a 2 axis DRO, I'm looking at DRO PRO's magnetic system, and saving for the kit. I am also wanting to upgrade to a 8" 3 jaw. The lathe came with a 8" 4 jaw, and the lathe runs better with the bigger chuck on it.
WOW, Thanks for the plug! I am happy to hear my vids helped you in your lathe buying choice, Grizzly has been very good to me, and the customer service is excellent. Good luck with your new lathe, your going to really like it!
I really don't notice a increase on my electric bill, I use the lathe at least three times a week, on, and off intervials each time used. Thanks for checking out my videos!
Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I think that will pretty much seal the deal for me as I have been hesitant to pull the trigger on one of these but I think I'll give it a try. Happy turning!
Right on Cruiser Mac, nice machine! Matt will take care of you, if not we can all beat him up on UA-cam! Looking forward to your new machine videos! Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Your welcome Trajiq187, and thanks for checking out the video! I have turned out many really nice parts on this late, and it threads like a dream! I really enjoy using it. Thanks again, Ray C.
Thanks AeroSport103, I had the PM 11X27, and the 11X27 LB before the Grizz G0709. I really liked the small PM, it's a great lathe for the money, I just out grew it. I would have bought a PM 14" X 40" from Matt but it would have been a good 8 months before he could get me one, the G0709 was ready to ship, so I got it, and have been very pleased with it! The larger lathe offers so much more, and having a 40" bed sure is nice!
Buy it, it's worth the wait! When I bought mine just before Christmas 2011 Grizzly had one at the Washington location. It was delevered within one week. No regrets!
My first choice was the PM but Matt would not have one for 8 or more months, I was without a lathe at that time, and could not wait. The Grizz was ready to ship, so I bought it. Matt has a better product, and stands behind his machines. If I had to replace the Grizz, I would get a PM!
Great to see what you have done on your lathe. I had tried to order a Grizzly but decided after they out of stock and had bad experiences with them to buy a PM12x36 super happy keep on turning
Thanks Environc, The PM12x36 is a really nice machine, plus Matt stands behind everything he sells. I got the Grizz because Matt's 14x40 was 8 months out, so I got the G0709, and so far so good! Thanks for watching!
Amen Brother! The FAL is bad ass! I went to my local gun shop to pick one up but, they talked me into the FN SCAR 17S instead... After I recover from that expense, I would really like to get a FAL. Lathe stuff, get yourself a few BXA Tool holders, you never seam to have enough of them, and some HSS tool blanks. I just realized I have more money in tooling, and measuring indicators than I spent on the lathe but, heck I love machining, and being able to make my own stuff! Good luck my friend!
Ray, Just wanted to leave a message… To my knowledge I do not have an email for you, so I had to do it here… Several months’ back you mention Matt and the quality service that Matt provides, (Quality Machine Tools). Apparently, I have more money than common sense because I purchased way more machine that I could ever use. I ended up with a 14x40 lathe with DRO and a 6-jaw chuck. The machine came with many extras that you mentioned on your G-709 review, (leveling feet, etc. …). These lathes in this category (14x40) are unbelievable… Thanks to your review on the G 709 lathe along with all the other UA-cam videos, I own a powerhouse of a lathe. I am enjoying making just about anything I want with easy. I just wish I had a real need for this much machine as I am struggling to find projects to do. Just wanted to say "Thank You" for all your videos, I find them helpful and informative with many of my endeavors…
Hey Bull Dog, Your welcome bud! Sounds like you bought right, and in time you will find that you can never have too big a machine, size=ridid=accuracy! The best of luck with your new machine and share some of your projects with the gang! Ray
Thank you Roy! This has been an awesome lathe so far, and have turned out some really nice parts. I will be posting some more vids of cutting, threading, center drilling, knurling, etc Ray C. Fresno, Ca
Leveling pads came from McMaster-Carr Item Number: 6111K58 Swivel Leveling Mount, Niclkel-Plated Steel, 5/8"-11 TPI, 4" Bolt. These are very good quality, not much more expensive than the pot metal ones, easy to install, and easy to level.
Right On! You are better off uncrating it first thing in the morning with a fresh start, just like a Christmas Morning in July! Get her set up, make some chips, and enjoy! You are going to love this lathe!
@@RaysGarage Thanks! Would you mind taking some pics of the pully end of the brake as well as the foot lever end? The brake on mine was removed (older Jet 13x40) and I would like to replace it.
Thank you DAChiappe! I am sure you will really enjoy setting up, and using your new G0709. You will find this lathe can cut some really nice threads as well! Be sure to get some good quality leveling pads, and feel free to hit me up with any questions. Building AK's, AR's, and making chips on the Grizz are my two favorite hobbies.
Great review! I should be receiving mine in about a week. I went from the pm1127vf as well. Our gun collections seem to be about the same as well saiga 12, polish under folder. I really enjoy your reviews and mods!
Thanks for the tip! I was looking at a Trav-A-Dial, on eBay however, for what these used units are selling for I'm going to get DRO's. My leveling pads came from McMaster-Carr Item Number: 6111K58 Swivel Leveling Mount, Niclkel-Plated Steel, 5/8"-11 x 4" You would have to drill out the base to fit 3/4" studs. Another thought is to use hockey pucks, and make your own adjusting studs. Pucks are very stable, and shock absorbing as well, allot cheaper than the leveling pads, just a thought.
I had lift gate service, then the driver used a pallet jack to move it from the street to my garage, after that it's all on you. I have a HF engine hoist to move it off the pallets, and move it around the garage. Good Luck Nathan!
I had to adjust the cam studs on the chuck to get them to lock in the correct locking area, (between the arrows on the spindle hub). Other than that I have not had any issues with either the 6" 3 Jaw, or the 8" 4 Jaw. Also my spindle hub has zero run out, the 3 Jaw has 3 thou. run out. On a side note, I just ordered a 5MT to 5C spindle adapter from Grizzly so I can start using 5C Collets.
Hi Ray,Its the old timer again, really enjoy your videos, old and new, and I especially like the way you reply to the comment section keep up the great videos ,till the next one..adiamo,
I have never had an issue with this lathe since it was new almost 10 years ago, it does and has done everything I needed it to do. The best upgrade was the 8" set true 3 jaw chuck. It's a decent lathe for the money but would buy a PM1440 if I had to do it all over again, the PM is a much better machine for about the same money!
CDCO also has the BXA turning tool holders on sale for $9 ea. and the turning/boring (has the vee groove) for $10 ea. Good time to stock up, never have enough tool holders.
I had the truck driver use his pallet jack to get it off the lift gate, and into my garage, then I used a Harbor Freight engine hoist to get it close, then just slid it into position. The lathe was not hard to move around at all. Hey Bro, If that Bridgeport is in your way, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands! :)
I would try and hang on to that South Bend if you can! I also have a 1967Clausing 4913 10" X 36" it has a few more SAE thread settings than the Grizz but only a 1-1/16" spindle bore. The Grizz has all the Metric thread pitches, a much large spindle bore, swing, and longer bed, so I'm using both lathes all the time!
Are you happy with the electric controls on the machine? How happy are you with the gibbs on the apron? Is there anything you wish the machine had that it doesn't have already?
Hi Bill, I use my 4-Jaw often for gun barrel work, and never have a problem getting zero run out. Just a thought, did you check the run out of the spindle without a chuck mounted, you might want to also check to see if the spindle needs to be snuged up a little tighter. The adjustment nuts are at the outboard spider side. I do however have a headstock oil leak I can not find yet, I find a few small dops on the front left side of the chip pan, and on the back side of the motor?
A lot of people dissing this thing...but when you can't afford 6 figure sums...it's absolutely fine. Like you say...sturdiness is key. The maker does the rest. It's pretty much a clone of my Colchester. BTW: I LOVE the "Poor man's DRO"! Absolute genius and I will be stealing the idea until I can afford a proper DRO. Love it!
Hello Sy Mon, You are right on man! This has been and still is a really good lathe for the money, and still using the "poor man's DRO" Thanks for your comments and for tuning in!
Ok so I can deff afford it and I am calling it a piece of Chinese shit! 6 grand is not a lot of money at all why would you treat it like it is?when the term 6 figures is used its 100,000. not 6,000.00 lmfao what a looser!
Bill, I read a little blurb somewhere where someone had an issue with one or more of the cam-lock studs being too long and bottoming out in the spindle. The cure was to face off the ends of the stud(s) just a little. I'm guessing it was a tolerance issue related to the distance between the cam cut out in the stud & the end of the stud.
It's going to have to wait a while, unfortunately. But meanwhile, I'm spending my time watching your videos, Mr. Pete, and other fun stuff. I've already ordered some Chain Lube, a parts cleaning brush, some strong magnets, and a gross of acid brushes. I haven't been able to uncrate and locate the lathe yet, but I played with the quick-change tooling and inserts and stuff on my bed like army-men :D I'm a big ol' kid, I tell you. Big ol' kid with a FAL that's getting a new heavy barrel soon :D
The chuck is a great option, I did not what to have to mount a chuck, and possibly loose accuracy, that's why I thought of going with the adapter, and drawbar. Everything I got fro Grizzly was under $100, Sleeve P4026001 $41.00, Pin P4026047 $9.00, Drawbar P4026004 $48.00. I just have to make a handle for the drawbar. Wish I would have know about Reid Supply, I paid way too much for my pads!
What is the grizzly PN for the carriage stop? I need one for my lathe. Do you know the the ways are the same as the on the G4003G? Nice set up. Thanks.
Reid Supply has 5/8-11 6000# rated leveling pads for $9.50/pc. not far off the cost of hockey pucks. Saw where you were going to order the 5MT-5C adapter from Grizzly, I looked it up and it's $98. CDCO has 5C plain back chucks on sale for $139, all you need is a D1-5 6" backplate, Shars carries them for less than $70. You could set the 5C chuck up as a Set-Tru or jig it up to true it to the spindle and fit it to the plate.
Congrats on your new Grizzly G0709 dkrenshaw, the part number for the carriage stop is; P59601420 Cost is $46.25. You might have to also get a small piece of aluminum angle, I think 1" to take up some of the space between the bed rail and the new carriage stop. I would be happy to shoot you some pictures if need. Good luck with you new lathe!
Hi aryesegal1988, The G4003G was my second choice, I wanted the extra two inches of swing and, four inches of bed length, so I went with the G0709. I woud say if your tight on space go for the G4003G, but if you have the space and don't mind the few extra dollars, go for the G0709, you cant go wrong with either lathe!
Yeah, mine has it too, always be sure when going into the cut the backlash is out by backing out first then traveling in. There is not much you can do on the carriage if my memory serves me correct but the cross-slide has a brass split nut you can snug up on, it’s in the center bottom of the cross-slide. I’ll have to take a look at the carriage again and see if there is any adjustments.
Kelly Breckenridge Hey Kelly, The G0709 has been really good to me as you have seen in past videos. Not one issue to date and still running strong after 3+ years of daily use! Thanks for stopping by bud! Ray
Hi Bull Dog sorry I did not notice you had asked the question. Just paid for my new 1440-E today, should have it in a week or so. If I don't like it I am going to blame Ray! haha Once I get it set up I will post a video of it; not in action though because I have no clue as to operate it..haha.
Hi Kip, The part number for the carriage stop is; P59601420 Cost is $46.25, (when I bought it) and you will have to get a small 3" piece of 1"x1" aluminum angle, to take up some of the space between the bed rail and the new carriage stop. The ways are slightly different. Take care!
Do you know what type of machine is used to drill the barrels and create the rifling? What is the technology/technique/system that is used to bore the hole in a piece of steel for 20 or more inches? I would like to see the machine techniques used to create a barrel blank.
Hey Ray, Just saw your review on your lathe! I guess from what I'm hearing, they have really stepped up their quality! Cool review, and if I didn't already have 5 lathes, I would consider getting one of these!! Thanks again for sending me the knurling charts! Razor!
Hey Ray, Your welcome bud! 5 lathes let me guess, all old school USA iron! The G0709 has been a really good machine for the price, it's done everything I needed it to do and has done it well. I still really enjoy machining on the Clausing, it has a great old school feel to it and threads like a dream! Thanks for stopping by! Ray
Ray Caniglia You got it bud! Three Southbends, 8"(1929-30), 9" c model, (40's), Heavy 10, (built for the war effort, early 40's), a 9" Rivett 2nd operation turret lathe, also 40's, and lastly a 13" x 40" Chinese lathe that looks very similar to yours. Hopefully I'll be able to make some money back with them!! Hence the knurling charts....LOL! Enjoy your vids Ray! Cheers, Razor!
+brent19731 Hey Brent, Thanks man and great to hear you have a new lathe coming, you will really like it, feel free to hit me up with any questions! Best Regards, Ray
I left a comment a while ago, but don't see it...maybe due to a link I put in it to the Grizzly leveling feet I ordered? I asked you how stable you find your lathe to be on those leveling feet you used? They look perfectly capable, but Grizzly recommends their G7160 leveling pad for the G0824 lathe, which is their other 14x40" lathe that's virtually identical to this one, but with a 2.01" spindle bore (and requiring more gear changes for threading). But the diameter of those feet is 4.75" so I ordered six of them for the G0709 I just ordered. Basically, I reasoned that putting the lathe on six of those leveling feet will "widen" the base about 3-4", so that's the way I went. I can't post a link to those leveling feet, as I think the post would be removed again--but that's definitely their item number. They're rated for 1300 pounds apiece, so they're perfectly capable of supporting this 1300-pound lathe--but the real attractive feature is the 4.75" diameter.
@@RaysGarage Roger that. I guess it comes down to how stable (overall) the thing is while sitting on the supplied lathe stand. If it's relatively stable, then the feet you chose should be just fine. I only ordered the ones from Grizzly because they recommended them in the manual for their other 14x40" machine (G0824), and that lathe is basically the exact same size and weight.
Hey Ray, love the videos! I just ordered my G0709 lathe today and can't wait until it arrives. Where do you get your headstock and carrage oil, and what do you use. Thanks again, and keep the great videos coming. Jake
Hey Jake, Thanks man! I use Far West Spindle Oil Heavy Q.C. # 05052011 It's the same as Mobil 1 Velocite Spindle Oil. Be sure and get an oil that is good in your climate, don't use heavy if you live in a cold climate area. I use heavy since I live in Fresno California, very rarely gets below 45* in the winter and is in the 100's most of the summer. Congrats on your new Grizz, you are going to love it, and they have great customer service! Thanks, Ray
Do you have a part number for the micrometer carriage stop? I can't find it on Grizzly's website. Was it an accessory for a different lathe? I just got my G0709 last week and I'm in the process of cleaning all the dirt, crud, and cosmoline off of it, but I'm gathering some accessories for when I start making chips. Great review by the way, it was very helpful for me in choosing between the g0709 and g4003g.
Ray, I also have the G0709. Are you happy with the 4-jaw? I could not get a work piece centered. Grizzly replaced the 4-jaw with a new one. (Great customer service on all Grizzly stuff.) The new chuck was no better than the original. I have to shim and bump to center. What do you think about your 4-jaw? --Bill; aka seal killer
i have just bought the 36 inch model of that lathe it works great. i wish it had a hour meter, im going to install one where the switch is to start and stop the motor.
Hi iamnooneeither, the spindle turns with just a little bearing seal resistance, so it takes longer to stop at higher RPM's, unless you use the E-Brake, then it stops instantly. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ray, I am in the market for a new lathe. Are you still happy with the Grizz? Have you had to get any replacement parts for it? Thanks for taking the time to do this review. It was VERY helpful. Best Regards, Reid
Hi Reid, So far so good, no breakdowns or any worn parts yet and still going strong after four years of use! The only issue I had was a minor oil leak from the front gear case sight glass, Grizzly sent me two replacements at no charge. I have to say that Grizzly has great customer service! I can hold tight tolerances repeatably as long as I don't take too bit of a cut. The G0709 holds tram and stays level with the McMaster leveling pads I installed when new. Only other option I would recommend is if you can find a USA built lathe in really good shape but you are giving up a warranty and customer service. All in all you can't beat the Grizz for the money and would buy one again if I had too! Ray
Ray Caniglia Thanks for your reply, Ray. I have been looking for a long time to find a USA built lathe that is in good shape. It is VERY hard to find one and when you do, the price is way too high for me. I just hesitate to buy a Chinese made lathe but the Grizz is here in Washington and, I believe, they do stock a lot of parts for them. It is always nice to see good customer service with any company. That means a lot to me. I appreciate your input! THANK YOU!! Reid
I have a Grizzly Mill (with 3 axis DRO plus a digiatal on the quill) that I use a lot...kinda like about any thine I can think of an excuse to use it, but my lathe is an older South Bend 9 and it is getting smaller and smaller (for me, anyway) by the day---not to mention that is IS older and fairly worn out, so doing good cuts and accurate work is tough. BUT my BIGGEST gripe is how tiny the bore through the head stock is! I am SOOO jealous of those that have a new, heavier, more accurate lathe than what I have and I REALLY want a Grizzly Gunsmith lathe! Problem is, I can't afford one....so my WIFE says, anyway! I have met and spoken (and shot in a few matches against him) with Shiraz Bololia several times and he seems like an upstanding sort of guy, so i don't mind putting a few bucks in his pocket! Thanks for the good video!
I saved for a long time to get this G0709 lathe but If I were to do it again I would get the PM1440 with the two inch spindle bore, its made in Taiwan and is a much better quality lathe at about the same price. Grizzly has sold many machines over the years because of my videos and has never even give me a thanks. Recently I bought a 8" 3 jaw chuck from Grizzly, they assured me it would have less than .001" run out, spent over five hours trying to get it to run true and the best I got was .003" run out. I ended up sending it back for a refund. Long story short Don, take a good look at the PM's and if can can find a older USA made machine in good shape jump on it!
Ray, You have any idea how to take out the auto feed on the cross slide, mine isn't working and afraid I might have sheared off a pin, You have to pull the whole apron or can you fix it by taking the auto feed front off and get it out? Have the same lathe you have and love it. Thanks for all your videos. 👍👍👍👍
First check that the roll pin that drives the carriage is not broken, it's the smooth shaft above the power handle shaft running from gear box to end of tail stock.
@@RaysGarage Thanks ray , pulled the Apron, inside all is good and works, the auto selector lever puts it into drive and engages the gears, the dial on the cross slide rotates when you engage it, an the feed works manually, but not in Auto, even talked to Jody from Grizzly, really can't figure out what it could be, maybe in the cross slide but why would the cross slide rotate and work but not feed. Real bummer, if or when I find out will let you know. The drive pins are all OK, have a photo of it, but can't send here I guess, Thanks for you ideas, What about the cross slide shaft ?
@@RaysGarage Ray, Did the shear pin check when I pulled the Apron off, and the drive line shaft with the leadscrew and power rod. All is good inside, cosmolin crap all over the worm gear, what a bunch of crap they put on it. Put it all back together last night, works perfect , no idea, unless I had the gear selector dials in the wrong position, drive rod doesn't move it a few settings. Wish they had more info on them in the manual. Know where the chart is on the machine, but like one to look at. Thanks for you input Ray, wish someone did more videos on using the Grizzly G0709 using settings, Thanks again Ray. 👀👀
Be happy to help you out Cruiser Mac,. I found allot of help here on UA-cam from really great people like, mrpete222, Keith Fenner, myfordboy, just to name a few. Matt gave me some great info as well! Get yourself a few extra tool holders for your tool post, and some carbide insert cutting tools from Matt to start. After getting your new machine wired, and leveled out, order yourself a few standard size rods of "Free Machining" material, (steel, and aluminum) from Onlinemetals.
It's hard to tell from the video, are the graduations on the cross feed & other dials deep engraved or are they laser engraved? In otherwords, can you catch the graduations with your fingernail if you drag it across them? I'm also wondering if there might be a way/clearance to add an additional pulley arrangment for a slower spindle speed for threading.
I have the G0824, much better deal, comes with a DRO, 2" thru bore so I can do 50 BMG barrels. I tighten up the controls, I did not like all the backlash. Reason I went with the G0824 because it was about the only lathe before I had to go to 3 phase which is not available here and did not want to buy a phase inverter for the bore size I wanted to be able to do. I ordered my lathe feet from Amazon, the ones from Grizzly were just to costly for what you got and the ones from Amazon were of better grade and larger foot print to support the weight. Took about a week to get it all leveled up and I mean it is level too, been holding level now for about a year with no adjustments, one thing you cannot rush is leveling, it does take a long time to do to get perfect. The side cover I have noticed if you tighten up to much it will rub so make sure not to over tighten. I keep it in a 900 sq foot climate control work shop with the humidity level at around 30%, 35% max at a room temp of 75 deg year round and air purifiers to keep down any dust, but still make sure it is kept wiped down with way oil and is cleaned after EVERY use, that goes for all the equipment and tooling here. End Mill, CNC, Laser etcher, etc... about $300,000.00 worth of equipment, yah I am a bit anal on keeping it well protected and maintained. I build only the best here, takes time to build the type of firearms I build here and safety is the top concern, NOTHING is rushed. But good to see people getting into building firearms, gunsmiths are getting harder and harder to find with all the fee's and taxes thanks to Obama sticking it to us with having to pay stupid ITAR fees for no reason other than to tax the hell out of us.
Thanks for sharing, sounds like you have a awesome shop! I love gunsmithing and have been doing it for many years but unfortunately I have been doing very little of it and only on my firearms now due to the regulations and strict gun laws here in Ca plus UA-cam is anti guns big time so no more smithing videos for me! On the other side of things, this G0709 has been a pretty good lathe for the money, I upgraded the chuck to a 8" PBA adjustable 3-Jaw which made a huge improvement and like you took out some of the backlash, I do need to add a DRO soon and not sure why i have gone over 8 years now without! Thanks again and Best Regards, Ray
Ray, did you ever devise a good way to get oil into and out of your G0709? I should have asked this question long ago, but my shop was in storage for almost the last five years. Hope all is well? --Bill
Ray, I came up with some small black iron pipe which screwed into the drain plug holes that I used to pipe the oil away from the machine and into a bucket. Instead of removing that gear, I used a 45* pipe angle. It worked, but I still made a little bit of a mess. Removing the gear would make it easier. Now that I've finally built the new shop I hoped you had come up with some amazing method that I could steal!
I would also like to mention to take a look at the PM1440, it's a much better lathe for the same amount of money, better gears, bearings and made in Twain.
Hi Scott, Still using this same lathe without any issues. I use it about 2 - 3 times a week so its not used daily and am very happy with it to date. I added a DRP Pros DRO and a adjust true 8.250" three jaw chuck, the bigger chuck improves the lathes cuts with the extra mass. so yes I do feel good about this lathe and would recommend it, as a better option for about the same amount of money take a look at the Precision Matthews PM1440, its a step up from Grizzly.
Thank You, It has served me well for many years now , here is a like to where I bought it. www.grizzly.com/search?q=(G0709) Thanks for tuning in. Best Regards. Ray
I was kind of set on this Lathe after watching your videos; but Matt has a similar PM machine with DRO installed for sale right now for not much more money. As you have had both brands..wondering if you would take the PM over the Grizzly?
I have thought about this lathe myself but when I type in my zip code into grizzly website it states that the lathe is not available for immediate shipment. Did you have to wait to get yours? I have a grizzly bandsaw and it is perfectly good.
I would not say deep engraved, I can feel that they are cut into the dials, and not smooth, my finger nails are kinda short, but I can feel the cuts, I would say they are lightly engraved, then painted. I have seen somewhere here on youtube the guy did reduce the feeds on his Grizzly 12 x 36 with some mods to the gear set. I find it to be slow enough for the type of threading I'm doing, I really don't think it will be an issue.
Hi mate. I was impressed with this lathe 3 years ago, when you first showed it, and am still impressed with it now. I wish I could afford something like this. Marcel.
Marcel Timmers Hi Marcel, The G0709 has been a great machine and still very happy with it but if I ever decide to upgrade I will keep you in mind for sure! keep an eye out you never know, one might pop up in your area and price range. Regards, Ray
Ray Caniglia Thanks for that Ray. I would take up on your offer in a flash. But I think that we might have a logistics problem. I'm in Perth, West Australia. Although transporting things to Australia is less pricy than I first thought. I bought my bike from South Carolina, and that was $1000.
Marcel Timmers Yea that would be a costly ship at over 2K lbs, hopefully a nice one will pop up for sale in your area. Your Rottie is beautiful man, mine is now six months old, 100 lbs, and just learned how to swim this weekend, now I cant get him our of the pool! Regards, Ray
Ray Caniglia Hi Ray. That was one of the pups that our Mork and Mindy had. The first litter was 19 pups, and this was one of them. Un fortunately Mork had to be put down on my 50th with cancer ,too much pain, and Mindy is no longer here as-well. Now we have two dogs from Rottweiler rescue WA .com. Unfortunately a lot of people here have such low self esteem, that they have to mistreat their dogs. You should see what they do to those wonderful animals that have a very small and tender heard. They are some of the most loyal and loving dogs. And yes they love to swim. We can take ours to the beach, and they love it.
Marcel Timmers Hi Marcel, Very sad to hear of your loss, and even worse that some people mistreat animals, just remember that karma is very real and very powerful! Rocco is doing very well in the pool now and loves the water too, he has to be one of the best animals we have had to date! Regards, Ray
I enjoyed the new lathe tour Ray. Nothing like having a brand new machine all to yourself!!
That's for sure brother, thanks! I like the Grizz but, I have to admit I really like running my little Clausing, it just feels better, and threads like a dream!
Thanks for watching,
Ray
This lathe has a lot in common with my new 12x36 so your vids are giving some good info. Thanks.
Yes, both are very similar and am glad to hear your getting some good ideas! Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I think that will pretty much seal the deal for me as I have been hesitant to pull the trigger on one of these but I think I'll give it a try. Happy turning!
after leveling, you should set the bench in concrete (exclude the levelers, so as to be able to access them and even remove them)
Right on Cruiser Mac, nice machine!
Thanks again,
Ray C.
No regrets!
That is a Nice looking Lathe I Like all the features you showed and how you added your own indicators
Thank you not2fast4u2c,
For a Chinese lathe it does very well, and has done everything I have needed it to do so far!
Thanks for your comment,
Ray
Ray,
Just wanted to leave a message… To my knowledge I do not have an email for you, so I had to do it here… Several months’ back you mention Matt and the quality service that Matt provides, (Quality Machine Tools).
Hey Bull Dog,
Your welcome bud!
I will be posting some more vids of cutting, threading, center drilling, knurling, etc

Excellent. A nice solid lathe, well finished. I like your modifications - clever.
Thanks Jester,
The Grizz has been a great lathe, issue free for over three years now!
Ray
Leveling pads came from McMaster-Carr Item Number: 6111K58 Swivel Leveling Mount, Niclkel-Plated Steel, 5/8"-11 TPI, 4" Bolt. These are very good quality, not much more expensive than the pot metal ones, easy to install, and easy to level.
Harga dari mesin itu berapa Tolong beritahu harganya
Right On! You are better off uncrating it first thing in the morning with a fresh start, just like a Christmas Morning in July! Get her set up, make some chips, and enjoy! You are going to love this lathe!
Great review! Could you do a quick video of the workings of the emergency brake?
The E-Brake works great, it's also very handy when you need to lock the chuck for hand threading!
@@RaysGarage Thanks! Would you mind taking some pics of the pully end of the brake as well as the foot lever end? The brake on mine was removed (older Jet 13x40) and I would like to replace it.
I really liked the way the review was givenmanother job well done.keep'em coming.
Thanks Ray, this was one of my early videos so the quality of the video was a little poor. Thanks for tuning in once again my friend!
That's great CruiserMac! Good luck with your new PM!
Great tip, Thanks! I have a few of CDCO's Holders, and they are pretty nice for the price!
Awesome review, thanks a lot man!!
Hi Ray,Its the old timer again, really enjoy your videos, old and new, and I especially like the way you reply to the comment section keep up the great videos ,till the next one..adiamo,
How is this unit working now? Any updates? I enjoy Gavintube's channel lately.
Right on Brother! Get her set up, and shoot me some pics! You are going to love this lathe, make sure you have a lot of material to test her on.
I enjoyed the video. Am interested for a mini as I don't have the money.
How much cost this Grizzly G0709 14" x 40"
Where did you get the pads, they look like very well made units better than the cast pot metal junk you see at most places.
The Lagun is a sweet machine, thanks for your input!
I bet you they are Taiwanese, notice the 3 v-way is the same as grizzly's southbend lathes.
I haven't been able to uncrate and locate the lathe yet, but I played with the quick-change tooling and inserts and stuff on my bed like army-men :D
I'm a big ol' kid, I tell you. Big ol' kid with a FAL that's getting a new heavy barrel soon :D
Cool vid man. I'm gonna go ahead and get one of these myself as my first lathe.
And 8 years later, I've made thousands of things on it!
Thanks Ray! Matt has (2) of them in stock and ready to ship so I guess that makes my decision!
Fine looking machine! Congrats. I like the"poor man's" digital ads. Look forward to seeing you cut some metal...
Roy Lewis Buffalo New York USA
Any tips on how to get the backlash out of the 709? I just got one (new) and it has a little backlash on the cross slide and the carriage.
Thanks Ray, very good review.
Sorry for the poor video quality, I now have a better cam and a stand! Thanks for your comment and for stopping by!
Ray
Nice review, I do like that lathe
Take care!
Do you recall the thread on the carriage lock that you made the handle for? It's not shown in the online IPL for the lathe.
Do you know what type of machine is used to drill the barrels and create the rifling? What is the technology/technique/system that is used to bore the hole in a piece of steel for 20 or more inches? I would like to see the machine techniques used to create a barrel blank.
Very smart man i am impressed great setup for less money great man
Many Thanks Milan!
Hey Ray,
Just saw your review on your lathe! I guess from what I'm hearing, they have really stepped up their quality!
Cool review, and if I didn't already have 5 lathes, I would consider getting one of these!!
Thanks again for sending me the knurling charts!
Razor!
Hey Ray,
Your welcome bud!
Three Southbends,
8"(1929-30), 9" c model,
(40's), Heavy 10, (built for the war effort, early 40's), a 9" Rivett 2nd operation turret lathe, also 40's, and lastly a 13" x 40" Chinese lathe that looks very similar to yours.
Hopefully I'll be able to make some money back with them!! Hence the knurling charts....LOL!
Enjoy your vids Ray!
Cheers,
Razor!
Ray,
I got my 0709 delivered today. Sadly, I'm to exhausted to uncrate it tonight, so I'm watching your video again :D
Thanks for the info, and thanks for watching!
nice quick and dirty review. good stuff. just getting started in the hobby and have a 10 x 22 coming.
+brent19731 Hey Brent, Thanks man and great to hear you have a new lathe coming, you will really like it, feel free to hit me up with any questions!
Best Regards,
Ray
I found that this item is being discontinued; however, they did have some in stock. Mine is on its way! Thanks Ray
I have never had an issue with the feet I use and have them on several of my machines and fab table.
@@RaysGarage Roger that. I guess it comes down to how stable (overall) the thing is while sitting on the supplied lathe stand. If it's relatively stable, then the feet you chose should be just fine. I only ordered the ones from Grizzly because they recommended them in the manual for their other 14x40" machine (G0824), and that lathe is basically the exact same size and weight.
nice machine, thanks for the review
Good to hear you got one Kip, I hope you get allot of use from it!
I am going to be looking for advice once I get some tooling and start trying some projects. I am going to get a milling machine of some sort next.
Great choice kyleoglee! Feel free to hit me up with any questions. The best of luck with you on your new Grizz!
Can you add a 12" chuck to this size lathe? Or will it require to step up to the next Model G0509G - 16" x 40" which already comes with a 12" chuck?
No, I have a 8-1/4” chuck and would no go any larger. I do believe you can swing a 12” chuck on a 16” lathe
Hey Ray, love the videos! I just ordered my G0709 lathe today and can't wait until it arrives. Where do you get your headstock and carrage oil, and what do you use. Thanks again, and keep the great videos coming.
Jake
Hey Jake,
Thanks man!
Thanks,
Ray
Thanks knikula, It's a great lathe for the money!
Very nice thank you much for showing.
Hi Randall,
I hope you found some of these tips useful.
Thanks for stopping by!
Ray
Yes, it's 8mm - 1.25. I had to make a threaded stud, and spacer for the handle to work. Well worth the time, and mod!
You will be very happy with that lathe, an hour meter will make a nice addition!
Good luck with your new machine,
Ray
Hi axa, The out-board spider, and the larger spindle bore but, any metal lathe could be used as a gunsmith lathe. Thanks for watching!
Hi iamnooneeither, the spindle turns with just a little bearing seal resistance, so it takes longer to stop at higher RPM's, unless you use the E-Brake, then it stops instantly. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ray,
I am in the market for a new lathe. Are you still happy with the Grizz? Have you had to get any replacement parts for it?
Thanks for taking the time to do this review. It was VERY helpful.
Best Regards,
Reid
Hi Reid,
So far so good, no breakdowns or any worn parts yet and still going strong after four years of use!
First check that the roll pin that drives the carriage is not broken, it's the smooth shaft above the power handle shaft running from gear box to end of tail stock.
cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g0709_m.pdf
@@douglasbattjes3991 Thanks for the update, keep me posted on this, thank you!
--Bill
Hello Bill, Funny you should ask! I just changed out my oil and made a huge mess and do need to come up with a better way!
Thanks Ray, I know you mentioned it one of you videos but where did you get those leveling pads?
Is there a way to quiet down the motor or gear noise?
Hi Mike, Yes, I use CRC Dry Moly Lube on the gears, cleaned, adjusted and aligned the two drive belts and this helped a lot.
What makes the lathe a "gun smith" Lathe. ? Good video Thanks
Thank You! From what I understand from Grizzly the Gunsmith Lathe has a larger spindle bore, better spindle bearings and an Outboard Spider.
@@RaysGarage Thanks
I would also like to mention to take a look at the PM1440, it's a much better lathe for the same amount of money, better gears, bearings and made in Twain.
yes, from rifled barrel blanks.
It’s been 11yrs, do you still have the lathe and do you still feel good about it?
Hi Scott, Still using this same lathe without any issues. I use it about 2 - 3 times a week so its not used daily and am very happy with it to date. I added a DRP Pros DRO and a adjust true 8.250" three jaw chuck, the bigger chuck improves the lathes cuts with the extra mass. so yes I do feel good about this lathe and would recommend it, as a better option for about the same amount of money take a look at the Precision Matthews PM1440, its a step up from Grizzly.
@@RaysGarage thank you for the response .. my goal for 2024 is to finally get a machine.
You know your better off with the dial intacaters anyway, from what I've seen with most of the Chinese dro's you'll have to constantly replace them.
Wow very nice... It provoked my envy and i wish i have one to....
Nice! I will be using that, thanks!
Marcel.
Marcel Timmers Hi Marcel,
The G0709 has been a great machine and still very happy with it but if I ever decide to upgrade I will keep you in mind for sure! keep an eye out you never know, one might pop up in your area and price range.
Regards,
Ray
Regards,
Ray
Marcel Timmers Hi Marcel,
Very sad to hear of your loss, and even worse that some people mistreat animals, just remember that karma is very real and very powerful!
Rocco is doing very well in the pool now and loves the water too, he has to be one of the best animals we have had to date!
Regards,
Ray
I got my pads from McMaster Carr, check out Reid Suppy also, they sometimes have better pricing.
Good vid - THANKS!! Jim/Ohio (
