this is so sad it reminds me of my childhood before my parents divorced. i remember watching thomas and friends and this was one of my favourite episodes. Every time I watched this episode it made me so imotional that I cried... oh I miss that good"ol days... :( life is full of surprises...
I love all the strong points you mentioned in this video. Henry is up there with one of my favourite characters of the series, because he has so many traits that viewers can easily relate to. He's like that character you can understand the feelings of, and you can tell when it shows. While his personality in early seasons was shown to be arrogant and vain, but also having a kind, caring side. I don't get why people complain about his worrisome personality that he's been depicted with in Hit Entertainment's handling of the show, especially when you consider how much he has gone through, like when he used to be prone to breaking down all the time as a result of his unique but shoddy design. It just fits him. Part of why I also love him is because of my early days watching the show. Episodes like Coal and The Flying Kipper, his major character development episodes of Season 1 were notable examples. The whole series had built up to this point with his illness, where he was given special coal to make him feel better. Then of course we get to The Flying Kipper, where he was tasked with pulling a goods train of fish as a chance to prove himself that he can be a really useful engine. He pulls the train well, but gets into a horrible accident. Afterwards, he gets rebuilt with his new shape, making him feel better than ever. That satisfying moment of character development established the Henry we know today - happier, stronger and finally becoming the useful engine he wanted to be for so long. And then we get to your thoughts on Henry's Forest, which I admit is one of my favourite episodes of the show because of how beautiful it is, but also because of how emotional the story was. The episode starts off so happy, but then a storm hits Sodor and Henry was worried the forest would be harmed. When he was informed of fallen trees, his worst fear was confirmed. Even Thomas and Toby were worried about how Henry was feeling, and Toby then gets a job of taking trucks with young trees to the forest. After all that, we finally see the forest grow back again, better than ever. That sad music from the episode is one of the most beautiful pieces of music in Thomas & Friends to date. I always feel like shedding a tear of joy when I see the episode, because of how good it is.
This was why I praised Season 20. It had good episodes with some nice humour, but also because they toned down Henry being a coward. Hopefully Brenner and the writing team keeps that up in the next season.
The only thing I didn't like about Henry is that HiT forgot about Henry's new shape not needing Welsh or what they called "Special/Happy" coal. Glad they finally addressed that issue a few seasons later. Henry is a nice character, a shame he lost the strength contest in The Great Race. Nice vid, great use of the old music.
I love "Henry's Forest", and I also love it's Toby of all characters who emphasises with Henry. Think about it. He was made from wood, and he knows that his wood had to come from somewhere. It may have been from one of those places where they cut down trees and replant them, but it may as well have come from a random forest. Yet, Toby shows concern for Henry when the wood has to be taken to be used as furniture and the like.
Funny how Henry's Forest was railed against by the Good Reverend because of some railway technicalities. A point which I appreciate. But this video gets to the heart of why that was, nevertheless, a good episode.
I loved this show since i knew how to watch tv, but as i grew up i grew out of it. i didnt hate it, i was just getting old. Then when i was around 12 i got back into it for a few months. Now thanks to you, you've sparked my love for this show again. Im glad to have found a TTTE fan just like me since ive never had friends intrested in this show in my childhood. Keep doing what you do best. btw, love ur everything wrong with the great race. hope to see more of that.
Henry being a worrier character is fine with me, it's actually kinda funny to watch, especially in episodes like Flatbeds of Fear, Henry Spots Trouble, Beast of Sodor. Also with TAB, I guess Andrew Brenner chose to stick with Awdry's statement, who stated that Henry was afraid of the rain. While that is a bit ridiculous, it's funny.
I personally don't mind his worrier persona, especially when you consider he is misfortunate when it comes to accidents as well as when he used to be very prone to falling ill. I didn't like him being a cowardly wuss though, which was the reason I despised episodes like Henry Spots Trouble.
In my mind, the engine messed up the most was Skarloey. There was only one episode that had him in his true colors, That was four little enginee.(he was once a determined, old engine) But now He is a whiny, Fearful, but brave child.
Henry is my favourite character from the series. Henry is a hard worker at heart, but his illness often holds him at a handicap. Henry can be arrogant, much like Gordon and James, but he always shows remorse for his misdeeds. The Flying Kipper was what made me love Henry, but Henrys forest was what made him my favourite character.
If you know I'm into Thomas and Friends, chances are you'll know how much I like talking about Henry :) He's my favorite of the Steam Team, and very high on my favorite character in general list (if not my number one favorite). I wish there were more of us who like Henry's current character. I think it's a great change from the way he was in season 1. I'm always so proud of him when he faces his fear. What's interesting about TAB is, without pictures the original story could be interpreted that way. Unfortunately it makes Sir Topham Hatt look pretty awful for walling Henry up and causing more mechanical problems, when Henry was clearly scared.
I have a similar story to Henry's forest you see there was this model train store I remember ever Thomas toy I got there and then it closed and I was so sad my grandma took me there and almost every thing was gone I remember being so sad I had gotten half of my collection from there and to see it like this was a memory I will probably never forget then a couple months later I herd it opened and well I was so happy
Henry has always been my favorite engine throughout the entire series, I will always prefer series 1-5 over any other but I do enjoy some of the later series episodes he is featured in. I'm actually building my own Gauge 1 Henry using the exact same chassis they used to make him back in 1984 and for the rest of the model era, I've always wanted a series 3 Henry as I prefer his newer shape as it made him more unique and not like a slightly smaller version of Gordon but since HiT will more than likely never sell the props I took to making my own, it's still in early stages but I have the main part already. His very worrisome personality annoys me though, he is one of the more mature engines and this was very apparent in the older episodes but as the show got more kid friendly they made him seem like he was so immature which makes me not like his CG personality.
Info Chan Yeah they are, because they had connections to Sir Nigel Gresley. Gordon was built by him, while Henry was built from plans that were stolen from Gresley. The story goes like this. Around 1919, an unknown engineer held a grudge against Gresley and planned to one-up him by stealing plans for what was going to be a new prototype A1 Pacific (aka Gordon). While the engineer was excited and quickly built the engine, just as the engine was nearly finished he realised the truth - the plans that he took turned out to actually be for an experimental design. The result was a hybrid of an A1 Pacific and C1 Atlantic with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, that could also alternate as a 4-6-2. Thus, Henry Mk1 was born. Sir Topham Hatt, the head of the North Western Railway on the Island of Sodor, was desperately in need of new engines, and in 1922 he went to try and get a C1 Atlantic for his next engine, however the engineer managed to convince him to buy Henry. Thus, STH was stuck with this engine who had so many problems and imperfections as a result of the design. In 1935, it was discovered that Henry developed steaming problems as a result of design flaws. STH grew concerned of this on top of many other problems, and thus threatened to have Henry sent away if his condition didn't improve. But STH, being the determined man he is, one day decided to ride with Henry's crew to find out what was causing the steaming problems. It was discovered Henry had a firebox that was too small for an engine of his proportions, making him unable to produce enough steam. Henry's fireman than suggested that Henry should be given Welsh coal, which made him feel better and improved his performance to the point he was comparable to Gordon. He continued to use the coal until one fateful night where he was tasked with pulling the goods train of fish known as "The Flying Kipper". Henry was promised with pulling the Express if he did the job well, a thought that made him excited. Henry made good progress with the train, but it turned out the winter conditions caused problems, such as forcing a home signal into the down position and freezing a set of points that led to a siding. In the siding was a goods train that was waiting for the "Kipper" to pass. Henry came flying down the siding at full speed, and crashed into the train just mere moments after the crew escaped. Henry was badly damaged in the crash, almost beyond repair. Sir Topham Hatt assured Henry that the accident wasn't his fault but caused by the icy conditions. STH, knowing how much Henry wanted to be a hard-working engine, sent him for repairs at the LMS Crewe Works. However, Henry was not just being repaired but being overhauled into a much more efficient engine. Sir Topham Hatt used to work for William Stanier, who designed a lot of efficient engines for the LMS. Stanier overhauled Henry into an LMS Class 5MT 4-6-0, often known as the Black Five, known to be one of the most efficient British locos ever made. This rebuild was estimated to have taken around a month, which was a much shorter time than it would be for most work like this. With this new Black Five form, Henry was able to be much more stronger and capable of heavier work. His performance improved drastically and didn't have to rely on special coal anymore. These improvements even made him able to pull the Express so well that it put Gordon to shame, causing the big engine to be jealous. It's a neat story when you look at it.
Almost; as a young man, Topham Hatt was an apprentice at the Great Western Railway's works at Swindon, where he studied and worked alongside William Stanier- the two struck up a friendship, and it was through that friendship that Henry got his Crewe rebuild.
Henry is my personal favourite character. There are loads of episodes focused on him which are SO underrated, like "The Flying Kipper", "Henry's Forest", "Haunted Henry" etc. Heck even "Henry Gets the Express".
I know rev wanted Thomas to be as real as possible while still being kid related and learning lessons but the one story i love the most from the early years of Thomas was Henery's forest and that the one the rev hated the most and that makes me sad to know that
Some people might dislike Henry's Forest in terms of realism, but I still like it despite its flaws. I guess it develops more of Henry's character. I don't mind that he likes nature and is a "tree hugger" or whatever.
i was confused i have the all the classic seasons and some of the cgi and when i watched both on after the other i saw henry as a coward in the cgi but in classic i saw him as strong and arragent so i was confused.
Angela Disco HiT ruined his character. That’s what happened. I feel Henry is more of a three-dimensional personality who is a mixture of an arrogant cynic, a hard worker and a gentle giant who looks out for others. His tendency of feeling nervous makes sense in context due to his backstory of being a failed prototype, but don’t have it take over his character so much. That’s where HiT failed.
Cinematic Conductor Mattel thinks Edward and Henry suck in general solely because of bad merchandise sales. It's a shame that Mattel are clearly a money-hungry cult that don't seem to understand the charm of Thomas.
I think the reason why they kicked Henry and Toby was the fact they both are too confusing characters. In the classic series both of them had two personas. For Henrys example he was portayed as arogant like James and Gordon but at the same time worried and careeing. That's very confusing for kids watching. Same goes for Toby.
Hutkovsky More like Mattel and Hit Entertainment couldn't understand their character properly, which lead to them getting unfair treatment by the writers. If a new company takes over Thomas, I do hope they bring Edward, Toby and Henry back to the main cast and make them easier for kids to understand, but not take away too much of their true charm.
Well in Henrys case the reason why he changed his persona is because in the classic series he was too smiliar to Gordon and James and you know that Mattel wants every character to be different.
Hutkovsky The downgrade of Henry's personality happened as early as Season 8, which marked the first season of Hit Entertainment's ownership. I get that they wanted everyone to have a different trait, but it's gotten so badly flanderised to the point the characters have become unlikable.
There was one thing i really hate about henry was well had such a big tender and i mean its ok but it just made me feel like henry was just like thomas said in the old episode better late the never or something like that but anyways i love yenry but when mattel removed henry i was heart broken
That was one of the very first Thomas & Friends episodes I watched, and it was likely why I like Henry as a character. You couldn't help but feel sorry for him when he felt sick and the other engines didn't care about him. Heck, as that episode showed, The Fat Controller was almost threatening to send Henry away if his condition didn't improve, so you can see that deep down he cared for Henry. He knew that he had to get to the bottom of what was making Henry so sick, and it paid off.
western engine studios Ah yes, the very first episode I watched. I loved Henry's development arc of Season 1 because it showed that one should not give up and that with help, you can become even better. In fact, the sixth Railway Series instalment "Henry The Green Engine" was pretty much dedicated entirely to Henry's development and growth. The main idea how the development was written in was because Rev. W. Awdry originally intended to have Henry written out completely because he was annoyed at the Gordon/Henry confusion caused by the illustrator at the time, so he planned to have Henry die in a nasty accident. However, Awdry eventually rewrote the accident to not kill Henry, but instead allow him to get redesigned into a more proper locomotive class. But yes, you can see that prior to getting his special coal, Henry was really sad because of how much his badly-built shape let him down. He did feel happier and more energetic with the new coal, which led to him getting the Flying Kipper job where he had his fateful accident. He felt very downfallen when the accident happened because of how unexpected it was, but after his rebuild he was happier than ever because of the fact he was finally able to function like a normal engine without special coal. It's basically a story of getting knocked down but being able to get back up again.
The clasic and before the journey beyond sodor SHIT is good i loved that but the new things thomas WOOD and al its schit I HATE AL OF THAT and the mattel take and play comm one wtf i have magnets now i need to buy evreyting again thomas the train where is it goining aim dutch
Nichole Williams He isn’t dead. He’s just been reallocated to a different location on Sodor. Plus, I think at this point, many of the main characters’ arcs have been completed.
"In losing a part of his forest, he's lost a part of himself" I just began tearing up when you said that

Which episode? Henry’s Forest?
Full of ups and downs
Every time I hear the ending theme from "Henry's Forest", I always have to hold back tears... It's just so beautiful... :,)
The same thing happens to me whenever I watch this episode. I sometimes feel like this episode was what taught me the beauty of this show. : )

Henry is the perfect gentle giant for Thomas and friends
That's pretty much what he is. A strong engine, but deep down he has feelings.
TomKat 8434 True. He even loves nature, too. ^^

straswa if you look at it logically, Henry started his worrysome personality in season 8, just after HiT took over

Yes
I wanna see a retelling of Henry's Forest. I think the CGI would really show his emotion

Really I didn't really cry from Henry's Forest, but now I think like he's the Lorax
This is so sad I LOVE Henry so much he is fabulous and amazing
Fun fact: Henry and Gordon are half brothers
Info Chan Yeah they are, because they had connections to Sir Nigel Gresley. Gordon was built by him, while Henry was built from plans that were stolen from Gresley.
The story goes like this. Around 1919, an unknown engineer held a grudge against Gresley and planned to one-up him by stealing plans for what was going to be a new prototype A1 Pacific (aka Gordon).

He isn’t dead. He’s just been reallocated to a different location on Sodor. Plus, I think at this point, many of the main characters’ arcs have been completed.
