Sarabitch Oh I don’t get it, tho. The painting is so much older than that (mote than 300 years) and the novel is from 1999. Maybe they just wanted to make it look old to get the spectators into that mood? I don’t know.

This movie was amazing... as an artist and a movie lover, i cant get over how good it is. Just like the painting, its an absorbing and subtle story about two people who connect and understand eachother as artists.
I'm sorry, I know you comment this 4 long years ago, but you saying the girl and the painter bonded because of art? Nothing to do with art. They fell in love with each other (but I would say mostly lust). Very naive from her part and very reckless from his part, considering he was a married man with lots of kids and she was much younger than him.
@@claudiap.6838 I think there's romance here (or even lust as you said) but to say "nothing to do with art" is completely wrong! He's an artist anyway, and a good one at that. They might like each other from the beginning but their feelings towards each one of them only developed through the love and understanding of art.
Scarlett absolutely killed it here (no surprise, she's been slaying it left and right since Manny & Lo), but the girl in the original painting is actually a dead ringer for Mia Wasikowska.

Yeah well but having them speak English with a Dutch accent is just cruel to the viewers. I'm Dutch and the way Dutch people speak English is usually so incredibly terrible. Also, having non-Dutch people pronounce Dutch words and names... nah. I prefer English then...

right. the only attachment a male artist could have with his female subject, has to be the result of sexual tension between them. no other curiosities in between.
Orion I have seen the movie and his interest for her is actually peaked by the fact that she understands art and colours and his wife cannot.
She helps him brew and make the pigments and then sexual tension ensues, but it is always more like admiration, and respect for her because she knows she cannot be with him.
The film is innacurate historically and is merely based upon theories, but the acting and settings as well as the costumes are gold and I do recomend it because of hos interesting it can be to try and see things from another perspective, wich i believe is the whole point of this movie in itself.
The whole movie is one big "what if?"

I really loved this movie. It's an imaginative story woven around the only 2 known facts; it's a painting of a girl and J.V. painted it. All the rest is speculation. The story, cast, music and acting is quite good but the cinematography is simply amazing. Most of the film you feel totally immersed in a J.V. painting. An incredible work of art.
This trailer is so bad for a movie this good. Totally gives you the wrong idea if you haven't watched the movie

Word: I was fortunate to rent this in 2003/2004 on VHS tape from Blockbuster video back in the day. I believe that DVD became the standard after 2004, and VHS would be obsolete. This is a very beautiful movie. The trailer is exciting but for the movie you need patience but Scarlett Johansson was awesome in this. She should have won an Oscar back in the day at 19 (years of age). This is a Classic film! I highly recommend it! August 2023.

The movie is almost a Vermeer. Greatly done!! I only would have used repro of the paintings on canvas instead of the repainted stuff (which was not well done enough). And the tile ...I would have use a real one!!! But still a great movie!!!
