The sexual tension is great but honestly the best part of this movie for me is the concept of an accomplished artist and someone with an innate artistic ability and eye finding each other in complicated circumstances. Two kindred spirits that can never come together but are undeniably connected. As an artist myself, it warms my heart seeing them talk about colors and painting and composition with such tender passion. It's beautiful... this movie just sings to my artistic and hopeless romantic soul :')

You know they actually have no clue who the woman was right? That the movie is total fiction? Or your just saying you know that and warms your heart as a thought.

Someone asked why Griet was so protective of her hair, but it won't let me respond directly, so I'll just add:
Griet was a strict Protestant; in the book I believe it's said she was a Calvinist, but it's not mentioned in the movie which sect she belongs to. Most protestants at the time, especially Calvinists, were very fundamentalist and adhered to everything written in the Bible literally. Therefore, when it is written that a woman should cover her hair, it was to be strictly covered (much like a Muslim woman taking the hijab) as a sign of diligence to God. Adherence to this rule varied by region, but you can see it in other Protestant sects like Puritanism and Quakers.
It says in the book, however, that the way Griet wears her cap (with the points pulled so far down) is unusual, thus drawing a parallel with her strict religious upbringing and her quirky, atypical nature.
The Vermeer family is Catholic, and therefore does not practice head coverings. Most Protestants were also expected to wear modest, unadorned clothing depending on which sect they adhered to, but Catholics were allowed to wear finery to the point that the local laws and church allowed. Catholics also have religious icons (strictly prohibited by Calvinism at the time), which is why we see her as uncomfortable with the religious images in the Vermeer household.
In terms of Vermeer seeing her hair, to her, it would be akin to seeing her naked. Much like in many cultures around the world today, in her protestant culture, the hair would have been considered a woman's "crowning glory" and was not to be viewed by anyone other than her husband or close relatives.
If anyone is interested at all in Medieval and Reformations history, I would highly suggest reading the book by Tracy Chevalier and then I'd be happy to recommend further (mostly light) reading.

This clip is composed very well, making the viewer eager to see the whole movie. This film should not be missed, as it is a masterpiece of cinematography - a beautiful piece of art itself. Not at least through the slow camera movements, giving time to feast one's eyes and ears on the music, set design, costumes and beautiful makeup-art. Scarlett Johannson is so convincing with her great acting here. What a beautiful homage to the work of one of the great masters of art, Jan Vermeer.

@@lottie_newell5108 What "history"? The movie is based on a work of fiction - a novel written by Tracy Chevalier. Very little is actually known about the life of Vermeer. Some scholars believe he most likely used his wife and daughters as models - including a daughter for "The Girl With a Pearl Earring". No murders involved.

The Vermeers were Catholic, not Protestant like Griet's family. Griet's family would have been stricter especially a young woman working outside of the home, un married, etc. But may be her particular denomination's (of Protestant) way that women wore their hair?

Because it's important for the painting and has sexual tension. The movie in general is filled with sexual displacement and frustration, and the ear piercing scene is a moving moment of intimacy. It also suggests sexual penetration as he plunges the needle through her earlobe, spilling virginal blood.

    • @elamplough1

Griet comes from a strict, conservative Protestant background so her hair and body covering suggests a sexual and emotional repression. Thus the moment she lets her hair down, it symbolizes her emotional and sexual awakening.
