Schmincke uses the exact same paint that they use in the tubes, for their pans. The best way to pan the tubes is to fill them half way, let them dry for a few days and then top them up. It's the same way they do it in the factory. You must have a look at their line liquid watercolours called Aqua Drop. Nice and transparent and works great in an airbrush.

The store isnt going to part with any product sold at cost or below. I bought my 24 half-pan Schmincke watercolor set when my budget was tight. I got lucky with someone selling off his late wives hobby supply which included 2 sets of of 24 still cellophane wrapped, very high end watercolor brushes in a map and several high end Hahnemühle watercolor paper blocks all for the prize of one 24 Schmincke half-pan set. It is worth to keep an eye on eBay for art supplies.
My Daniel Smith water colors I started off with 6 basic colors warm and cool red blue and yellow in the starter set and a dot card with all colors so I know what I want when I buy additional colors. I also have a Schmincke dot card for the same reason - to avoid buying colors I don't like and subsequently use.
My palettes are porcelain plates from sales and thrift store. One is actually a white Russian egg platter, two are white fondue plates. Though I also snagged cute porcelain flower palettes from the art store when they were on sale. I also have 12 very small and very cute clear glass bouche geule plates with a nozzle from eBay which were ridiculously cheap. My make shift stay wet palette is a food tray for the fridge to serve cheese and cold meat that came with an air tight lit which was a tenth of a professional stay wet palette.
I try to think of things that are mass produced and can function as pro tools, type key phrases and browse eBay and low and behold ever so often I find useful items like those bouche geule with a nozzle, a metal butcher tray or the plastic cheese tray with an air tight lit.
You definitely don't have to break a bank to start on high end art supply.

You have absolutely made my day!! You are totally adorable and definitely not wrong. I went into my art room the other day to tidy up and noticed how many canvases I had stacked everywhere (all bought on sale btw). And yet, wouldn't you know, I had added more canvases to my online Michael's cart. I removed the canvases from the cart because why would I buy more when I already have so many. Later, I went to Michael's in person to pick up some stuff I "needed". Yep, you guessed it. I came home with more canvases on top of everything else I bought. Every item on sale for 30% off so look how much I "saved". Yayyyy!! Totally justified expenditure ;). Hugs for you cuz it was just as much fun watching you shopping/opening boxes on this video as it was doing it myself. You are so awesome!! I vote GENIUS!

I'm an art supply addict, recently being going nuts with Pastel stuff.
Got me the entire Derwent Pastel pencil line in the wooden box, love those.
Got me some Rembrandt Pastel crayons.
And the best stuff is actually the PanPastel stuff. Got me some reds, blues, grey blues, greys from black to white, some browns, skin colors.
And of course a bunch of the applicator stuff. I love how PanPastel works. Fantastic stuff.
Bought in some small batches, but i had all of those things loose, not a fan, got me 3 of those 10 pieces 'palettes', man, that is so easy to use and even carry with you, pop the lid off, they don;t move around, easy to actually use as palet, it's great.
And since it is of course a matte medium i immediately decided to 'challenge' myself a bit making something shiny, like a nice cool chick wearing a complete latex suit.

Funny, I was thinking a few weeks back that I've never found a watercolor tutorial on your channel or Patreon even though I vaguely remember you sketching with some Inktense pans at one point.
For anyone who wants to start WC with professional paints without breaking the bank, Daniel Smith sells a 5mL split primary set (ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, new gamboge, hansa yellow light, pyrrol scarlet and quin rose), which isn't too bad if you can find it at a store like Michaels and coupon it. It's definitely not a "budget" way to start, but I think I got that set for about $35 Cdn. with a coupon. Do that, and you have the peace of mind of knowing that the paint will behave as watercolor is supposed to, because a lot of "budget" watercolors do not. Of course, some people have to start with budget; but just putting it out there for people who maybe have a little more money but don't know wtf to start with.
If you make your own dried pans, a drop of glycerin in the bottom of the pan can help "glue" the paint in.

I am all about ramming as many paint choices into one tin at a time so I seek out the ones that have widen enough "paint brush holder" space to put another row of half or full pans in between the actual rows designed to hold the the pans. Some palettes are built so that space is too narrow to put any pans in and in my books that is totally unacceptable!!! ;)

Think of this as an early birthday! I know you don’t want to hear this, but you should try the Arches cold press because the colors dry a lot brighter.
Schmincke tube paints are exactly the same formulations as their pans, so replacing your used pans with tube colors is possible and cheaper. Also, Schminckes are great because the color is vivid and rich, but nothing beats some of the Qor colors (Quin Magenta, Green Gold) and some of the Daniel Smith colors. I also won’t set up a box without Sennelier Transparent Brown (Bitiume).
The Schmincke pans are sturdy and come with rolled edges so they don’t cut your hands, but I like to live dangerously so I buy the cheaper boxes and pans. If you really want to go broke, look in Etsy for alternative palettes. Often, people (me included) use pans with little magnets or blue tack so we can use a metal palette with the insert taken out and fit more pans in. I hate to admit this, but Amazon has the best deals on palettes. Some of the best are the folding plastic palettes which you set up just like you set up the pans but with much less paint.
There is 1 more great source for brushes - Rosemary & Co. out of the UK. They are really pricey but really good if you are willing to use real sable. Also, Cheap Joe’s make a selection of “travel brushes” that are just smaller brushes with short handles. I really like them for gouache (your acrylic brushes will probably be fine too.) Finally, if you combine your watercolors with water soluble colored pencil, water brushes are the best (I also use them without water in the handle for gouache.) Finally, some of those colors, like Potter’s Pink, are difficult to rewet, so you might want to use them straight out of the tube instead of from a pan. Schmincke is better than most, but it’s still Potter’s Pink, so.....

Welcome to the world of watercolor art. One palette is NEVER enough. There's always new brands and new colors to try. ;) As far as splurging goes, if you spend big bucks on anything, spend it on the paper. 100% cotton is a must. Doesn't matter how expensive your paints are or how nice your brushes, if you're painting on awful cellulose-blend paper, it's going to cause you so many headaches. You're good with the Arches. Some of the best paper out there. Would be curious to see you try cold press paper, too. Have fun!

I’m still new to watercolor, but in my experience Kelly is absolutely right. Watercolor just doesn’t do as much amazing watercolorey things on non-cotton paper. It handles water so much better, and you can achieve wet on wet techniques you’d never be able to do properly on regular paper.

Schminke likely Cera-coat their palettes correctly rendering them stain and scratch resistant for years to come. Cheaper ones will totally do the job; but likely won’t last as long or stay looking as good or both. I got a bargain palette like it and it scratches easily and stains too so I use my magic eraser every few weeks to clean it back up before it gets to stained for mixing or difficult to remove. It may be worth the price depending how high we are talking about....

    nice haul,
I think the amount is okay, an order has to be worthwhile, and it is better if a lot of things are sent at once than distributed in the year and more waste and transport co2 are generated.
There was probably a good discount, and you made good use of it ;-).
I suspect that you got to know watercolour through the mystery art boxes, because there was enough material to try out, and then you realized that you also like watercolour much.
I just think it's a bit unusual that you have decided for Schmincke, because as far as I know this brand is very expensive in the USA and local brands that are cheaper are actually preferred by people who start with artist quality.
Try later other papers, the paint always react quite differently to the respective paper on the painted and depending on the subject and style, the one or the other paper is better for it.

I also bought one that has the half pans of 24 for my Winsor and Newton colors. It does cost a lot more, but they come in very good quality and are long lasting whereas some that are less in cost come chipped and uneven coating and other problems.

Quidonkadonk indeed 😂 I use Jackson’s a lot, their own brand stuff is really good and they have the widest range in the UK. When I made my own palettes, I got some basic ones from them without the metal bits that hold the pans in, they’re maybe £5 for a palette that holds four rows of pans, I use blutak to hold them in.

    Hi!
I've been a watercolorist for 28 years and here's some of my experiences.
    Brushes:
Those series 7 sable, I'd suggest you NOT put them in the canvas bag. The bag will fray the ends and cause breakage. Sable brushes, the real sable, is very expensive. Depending on how much you have to spend, I'd definitely suggest taking good care of them and they'll last (you'll get your money's worth). I've had sable brushes, but the only pro I found with them is their capacity for water, lots of water in the "well".
The Mimik's are okay for watercolor, but I always like some springback to my brushes (obviously it's subjective🙂). If you are still painting in watercolor try Robert Simmons brushes. They are low cost and high quality. Also, no animals died for the art🥺. Escoda Brushes are some of my favorites, very high quality, but they are pricey the larger you get. Black velvet is a decent option - depends on what you like.
    Paints:
I've tried every type of watercolor made when I was still a watercolorist. I honestly preferred getting the tubes vs pans. The pan sets you bought are usually used for plein aire. The pans are too small for me. I always like to have room to mix my colors. As far as pans, they get hard to rewet and the colors are less vibrant. Some companies use honey in their paints which made rewetting much better and the colors yummy!! M. Graham and Daniel Smith are 2 that rewet gorgeously! I prefered tube paints that I put on my porcelain palette and I had a separate porcelain palette that was just an open pan and I'd mix my large puddles of colors on that.
Try a few Daniel Smith Watercolors. They are very excellent quality and they have some fun options!
    Names:
Yes, Perelyne (para leen)-you did a good job!
For Quinacrodone just say quin for short. It's pronounced
    K•win•ack•row•doan(doan rhymes with loan)....
    or Kwin/ackrow/doan
or just Quin ......like Quin Magenta*
    *whatever color
I know you're familiar with Phthalo's because of acrylics.
I like the descriptor Quidonkadonk, too!
    Quidonkadonk Magenta 😅
I hope you're enjoying watercolor! I no longer paint in watercolor, I am a silk painter now and have been since 2013. Silk painting is so SO much like watercolor, it's crazy!
Also, I'm so happy you tried Arches! Three or more years ago I had suggested to you to try Arches and you told me that you were happy with Fabriano Artistico. I'm glad you tried it and love it! I thought you might 😉
    God Bless 😃

Have you tried Hahnemuhle papers too? They are like the paper equivalent to Schmincke in Germany. Their photo paper is especially popular for photographers making huge art prints. Recently they've launched a new watercolor paper by the name 'Collection' and everyone who ever tried it says it's even better than Arches (not to mention the recent Fabriano produce). It's also vegan, they make all their sizing plant based.

If you want a basic black palettes don’t by the branded get the cheap eBay or amazon version, they are absolutely fine and do exactly the same thing. If you want a touch of colour you can get them in blue and pink too, but I am a traditionalist and black does me fine. The big ones look great but the small ones are just so nice to handle. Alternatively there are some fancier enamelled heavy weight boxes that have bars that keep the pans in, a far better option that a branded box, you are just paying for the name. The rest of your goodies are every bit paint lovers indulgence trip! Love the fun presentation! Prussian = Prush-Ann. But no big deal really...
