@@s.scottsdale1839 Only a few players have to be mentioned then. Grigor is a top 10 ten player almost the whole season. Made a remarkable comeback to the top at his age, beating a lot of top 10 guys. Anyway, he gets the love and attention, just not here. That's my observation.
He's been playing good tennis since Wimbledon last year, but his groin isn't holding up. He probably should've skipped Laver Cup or just been a benchwarmer and coach, to let his injury heal.
They asked a soccer player how to make a tennis competition better. Davis cup was unique and also highly regarded by players. Now its just a confusing mess. Home and away tie and surface choice was an amazing component of old davis cup
Davis cup and BJK cup should join be every 2 years ,top 32 ranked countries ,5 v 5 ,2 mens ,2 women's one mixed doubles match ,divide the 5 rounds in 3 times of the year like it is now amd we done .
I heard Federer mentioning making a Laver Cup for women, or adding women to the current roster. I'm fine with it as long as it adds to the current one rather than take away from the current men's roster. But again here we are with men going out of their way to accomodate women who will eventually demand equal pay with the men and act as if we owe it to them to have them join the event.
Rest assured you don't owe anyone anything, as all these guys and gals are well above your pay grade. That said, adding one more day to the Cup and a mix double on Saturday morning might be fun. As long as RF Is involved sponsors and crowds will flock with or w/o the women.
The mixed laver cup discussion makes me think about wtt. Im wondering if we could make a version that works. Something like: 2 womens singles 2 mens singles 1 Womens doubles 1 Mens singles 1 Mixed doubles The real problem comes in team size. 5 men and 5 women is a big team. Also im not sure how many matches can be played on 1 court in a day
Noah being appointed as Europe's Captain was a very odd decision...no one under 50 will even remember him...I would have liked to have seen Dominic Thiem as the new Captain...and teams playing for their Charities would give the event some meaning...
Looking forward to the time when Federer - Roddick are the team captains for Laver Cup. :) That would be so much fun. Also, are the top WTA players complaining about not being a part of Laver Cup - as if they want another thing on their already packed schedules? Who's doing the whining and why give that any air time? It makes sense for the United Cup to be a mixed format - which I enjoy. The whole premise of Laver Cup is "rivals become teammates" - last time I checked Alcaraz and Swiatek aren't rivals. That said, maybe Billie Jean King Cup can be reformatted to copy Laver Cup cause it would be fun to see Swiatek, Sabalenka, Rybakina on the same team. 🤣🤣🤣
Well everyone goes nuts over Billie Jean King and her help in creating the WTA. But Laver is the same thing for men's tennis. No one watched men's tennis till he came along.I am so glad he finally got the attention. Racing? Lexus? McLaren or bust dude.
John seems to think season is over where I do get there is no more GS but on ATP side there is 2 ATP1000 and Nitto finals and for 8 countries even if it's not what it was Davis Cup is kind of important for those 8 countries
Question: How are the player match-up's decided? Are the match-ups predetermined by the captains or drawn by the tournament organisers? The reason why I'm asking, I think Fritz must have been absolutely terrified to play Alcaraz, especially with the weight of winning the Laver Cup on the line. I think Shelton would have been a better match-up for that situation.
Each team gets a day to get their lineup before the other team does, and another day vise versa. On Saturday, Europe presented their lineup and World made their matchups. On Sunday, World did their lineup and Europe got to pick their players to match up theirs, as they saw fit
They are only allowed one Combination in doubles partner. You can't repeat it. It says *At least four of the six players must play doubles. No doubles combination is played more than once, unless for the Decider on Day 3, if points are 12:12. So basically, they can't have Tabilo and Shelton again.
@@AshleyKarys that Sinner has been let go off the hook , ATP being partisan towards him. His own journalistic need to milk this topic for as long as possible, even though the case has been pretty clear now. I have seen him talk about this topic enough times to know that. Coco’s decision making process should be pretty straightforward. Aryna had the exact same problems you do, so hire the guy who helped her fix them. My understanding is that he has only worked with her on a part time consultant basis, so he should be available.
Where was Junky Sinner at the Laver Cup? I didn't see him there. It must have been the schedule. Poor thing so tired after US Open. He had an exhausting final. Usually the Served content is incredible, but this was a complete hack job on the Laver Cup. Roddick flat out states that with Ruud playing with Carlos on the final day they should have gone with Shelton and Tabilo again (two lefties), but of course that would have been completely illegal by the rules since you have to use 4 different players in the doubles AND you can't use the same combination (except if it comes down to deciding doubles at 12 all.) Its even more wrong since on the final day the World team had to set their lineup and then Europe picked the players they wanted in each match. Wertheim totally lets this slide and obviously does not know the rules of the event. Just an offensively bad show on what will probably be the best event of the post Wimbledon season in 2024.
To someone like me who is a new into tennis (started to wtach it like 4 months ago) the Laver Cup was really cool. It was three fun days and I got to see some people play that I didnt have seen before and wouldnt normally watch and get to like them. Adding women is not a great thing in my opinion. For me it would have been games that I wouldnt have watched, because womens tennis is just not for me- but making an extra Cup could be a good idea maybe :)
it is a difficult task for me to listen to John, because the audio is just shit, but all he is saying is in the same apartment as well. He showed up in Gill Gross show with an unacceptable audio set up, so from the get go, I didn't like his attitude doing a podcast with very substandard quality. as far as I am concerned, post US open tennis sucks. Laver cup - all good. I love it, and I guess the players who play love it too. and not just for the money. it is a great product. Shanghai, Paris, I just don't care. Masters finals, ok, but not really that significant. All those indoors events, nah. Tennis is suspended for me until the next AO. It is important in a sense of ranking points and seeds, but as far as tennis is concerned, I'm very much checked out. What I don't understand is, why you are teaming up with these guys. one has a very little knowledge about tennis, and the other one has unreliable sources, plus very unprofessional ways to go about podcasting. Why you don't team up with, say, Gill Gross? bravo Andy, let's play 250th as much as possible after US open, until ATP finals, that is my wish. Because anything in between for the top guys is not significant. They are dragged to these events without them really wanting to be there, if you are not, say, A. Aliassime.
Wait… did Andy say they should have played the same lefties in the double against Alcaruud?.. they can’t play the same line up twice in this format😅. They could have played Kokkinakis tho … anyways, good entertainment stress free for the fans as much as the players. I need Serena to organized the women cup… not name Laver but Not Court either. Any women but Margaret’s Court. A fabulous affair with sisterhood away from the men. Why would we want to mix them up
People please don't ever shake Junky Sinner's hand so he doesn't test positive again. Also if you look at him directly in the eyes he can catch something. Poor guy catches everything through his thin skin. 😂
There has to be stakes on the table beyond cashing in a godly amount of money. Representing your country is so far away from representing the rest of the world !! The hype and excitement is so forced, you’d never see Borg that pumped not even when hen won all of his grand slams. I understand the show business but without points or ranking stakes it’s just another Beyoncé concert.
Hey Andy, Big fan of your podcast from India! It's awesome. Since tennis is starting to pick up in India, could you hook me up with a tennis TV subscription? It would be sick to catch more matches. Thanks for all the great content! Salil
adding a womens event to the existing Laver cup would be doom !! for me as a viewer it's already pretty intense viewing and I hoard the TV for tennis when I'm the only one caring for it in my household, also it's 3 days that I'm at home with no other plans... addig womens to the mix would tip it over and I would be able to follow... like me many many others.
Laver cup is a mens cup. Rod laver is a man. The wta are lazy and wont make their own. They just complain and want the men to make it for them. Stop trying to get the women to jump onto a successful mens idea. Make a wta version and have it at a different time and different city
Carlos moaning about scheduling yet it was his choice to play the Laver Cup (invitational), he's playing an exhibition in Saudi DURING the season and 2 exhibitions in America in early December. Do me a favor. He could've decided to rest up after the USO before Asia, but filled his calendar with Laver Cup
@@AshleyKarys There's a discussion to be had about it, don't get me wrong, but he had a perfect window for a rest in between US Open and China and filled it with Laver/Davis Cup. And then decides to play exhibitions during the season for a quick money grab, that's where he loses me.
@@cgh08443Aren’t Nole and Rafa playing those exhibitions too? I mean wouldn’t you play one match for a million dollars? I know I would. And I can confidently say so would everyone else if they had the opportunity to do so. Rafa is worth $300+ million dollars and he still plays expos. Clearly the guy doesn’t need the money. Just using Rafa as an example here.
@@AshleyKarys Yes I'm aware other players are playing the exhibition but I'm referring to Carlos as that's who was mentioned in the podcast. When he openly complains about scheduling it comes across as hypocritical when during times that he could/should be resting, he's deciding to play exhibitions and invitational tournaments for the huge appearance fees they provide. It is my opinion that currently the schedule is a little bit much but when players add events unnecessarily, then they start to dilute their argument imo, that's all.
No one wants to watch the women. I don't. It will not be successful. I only watch for alcaraz, roger and nadal. You need someone who will draw viewers, not many people on the level of those 3 in my mind. Just look at history and numbers
Do it together with the men--you have men and women on the same team for both teams then you play a men's match then a women's match or vice versa. Why can't you blend the two sexes. Is that beyond possibility?
Laver Cup is not very compelling and adding woman would make it even less serious It's hard to take the players complaining of fatigue when they go play this kind of exhibition immediately after a major
@@dorothysmith3205 several things. 1) there’s less overlap for fans worldwide 2) the men and promoters would not be willing to take a smaller paycheck to subsidize WTA here 3) WTA calendar conflicts 4) you’re trying to not make it even more exhibition quality

Dimi is awesome! He was the best coach as Laver Cup!
They asked a soccer player how to make a tennis competition better. Davis cup was unique and also highly regarded by players. Now its just a confusing mess. Home and away tie and surface choice was an amazing component of old davis cup
I do wish that they had chosen a more mixed group for the world . This year was more like Europe versus America.
It is always like that …and they play most of the matches
I am really curious why FAA, Rune or Tsitsipas is not going after Goran Ivanisevic. Any one of them could benefit greatly from his coaching i.m.h.o.
Rune and Tsitsipas have co-dependency issues with their parents they have to resolve first, no idea what's going on with FFA.
Davis cup and BJK cup should join be every 2 years ,top 32 ranked countries ,5 v 5 ,2 mens ,2 women's one mixed doubles match ,divide the 5 rounds in 3 times of the year like it is now amd we done .
Rafa playing the Davis Cup probably changes the narrative a lot 😅
I heard Federer mentioning making a Laver Cup for women, or adding women to the current roster. I'm fine with it as long as it adds to the current one rather than take away from the current men's roster. But again here we are with men going out of their way to accomodate women who will eventually demand equal pay with the men and act as if we owe it to them to have them join the event.
I'm a woman and I think they should start their own event if they want one. Laver Cup should remain as it is.
Something like:
2 womens singles
2 mens singles
1 Womens doubles
1 Mens singles
1 Mixed doubles
The real problem comes in team size.
Andy Roddick coaching CoCo in 2025 😇. I’m starting the rumor train
Go to the Laver Cup website the info is there
Each team gets a day to get their lineup before the other team does, and another day vise versa.
Also, they didn't know Ruud was playing when they made the lineup for day 3. Europe were the ones that got to peak at World's lineup on day 3.
Very hard for JW to hide the strong feelings he still harbors for the Sinner case. It almost came out when Andy took a dig at 42:49
What feelings exactly?
@@AshleyKarys that Sinner has been let go off the hook , ATP being partisan towards him. His own journalistic need to milk this topic for as long as possible, even though the case has been pretty clear now. I have seen him talk about this topic enough times to know that. Andy on the other hand is refreshingly candid and calls things for what they are without his own bias.
In Italy, we care soooo much about Davis Cup. If Sinner or Musetti didn't play they would be charged with treason
Italy has such a great team that they didn't need Sinner or Musetti to qualify for the finals.
@@blackkitty9054 no I meant for the finals!
Coco’s decision making process should be pretty straightforward. Aryna had the exact same problems you do, so hire the guy who helped her fix them. My understanding is that he has only worked with her on a part time consultant basis, so he should be available.
I wish world couldve added players from asia as well, didnt seem like there's any ranking raquirements
Where was Junky Sinner at the Laver Cup? I didn't see him there. It must have been the schedule. Poor thing so tired after US Open. He had an exhausting final. Oh wait Fritz played, Shelton played, Tiafoe played, Zverev played, Medvedev played, Dimitrov played. So basically everyone from the quarter-finals onwards of the US Open except Sinner. This is truly a mystery considering everyone likes him. 😂😂😂
He is well liked because he doesn't talk shit
@@khinrunite So where is he then? The best player in the world doesn't want to play Laver Cup? Nope, many players can't shake his hand and look him in the eyes right now, for a good reason. Another Italian got suspended for 4 years for exactly the same banned substance because he didn't have the fall guy like Junky had and where is his old team now? They just changed teams and nothing happened??? Everyone should post about this for at least 2 years (the amount of time he should have been suspended).
Let's gooooooooooooooooo Junky Sinner!!!! You are now in the elite company of the top 10 most famous sports dopers. Even good old Lance Armstrong would be proud of you. Congratulations!!!
@@ivanambreus3021spot on!
His Aunt just passed away. He went home to play his last respects.
When you win two majors in one year you can set your schedule.
Every French person out there knows that Yannick Noah was a tennis player
Hey JW, can you spring for a real microphone? The sound quality from ear buds is sub par and you know better. Your listeners deserve better. Tyia
I thought the Billie King Cup is the ladies equivalent of the Laver Cup.
Gilbert made Gauff's forehand and 2nd serve much much worse. She won the US Open despite Gilbert, not thanks to him.
10 seconds in ... and uhhhhhhh andy doesnt uhhhhhhhhh disappoint
1 w singles
No w doubles. 2 women 4 guys per team
Start Thursday primetime
Could they fix Davis Cup? seems like players really cared and liked it... ATP Cup even in its short-lived moment seemed to be a real team competition... Laver Cup has brought some fun moments but can come off like a glorified exhibition...
No one takes Davis Cup serious except Djokovic haha
Why is it Brad's fault for Coco making like a 1000 double faults
Do you suggest it should be "The USA vs the World"? 😂
Roger or Rafa or Nole could be Europe's Captain and Agassi or Venus or Serena could be The World captain
Roger seems like a no-brainer to step in. Agassi on the world side, or Hewitt, or.....Roddick?
Why Venus or Serena?? Laver cup is men's competition.
@@rajusaha855 Why not. Whether man or woman Does it make any difference. Aren't they 2of the greatest Tennis Players in the world 🌎
@@dorothysmith3205 two of the greatest lmao😂😂. Venus not the GOAT contender in women's tennis let's alone in both genders. She won just 7 slams with zero F.O & A.O & never finished as year #1. While Serena definitely a GOAT contender but even there is a debate between her, Steffi & Navratilova. For me personally (in open era) Novak is the male GOAT ahead of Federer then Nadal in 3rd. While for women Graf is the GOAT then it's Navratilova then Serena.
hey guys, you should be asking for likes in the beginning of the podcasts. you guys are getting the views, the comments and not the likes. 100 comments for 280 likes is wild.
on an unrelated note, tennis player fernando meligeni also has a podcast and talked about you this week. he told a story about facing you and a 1 dollar bill being involved. would love to hear your side of the story, andy.
Team World could have won!
Shelton and Fritz rock!
❤❤
I'm sport should have could have doesn't lead anywhere
Get rid of Laver Cup's psychopath billionaire secret society aesthetic IMO
Too bad fed cup was changed to bjk cup -else there wouldve been an actual chance to create bjk cup comparabke to the laver cup
To someone like me who is a new into tennis (started to wtach it like 4 months ago) the Laver Cup was really cool. It was three fun days and I got to see some people play that I didnt have seen before and wouldnt normally watch and get to like them. Adding women is not a great thing in my opinion. Not all people who are interested in mens tennis are interested in womens tennis.
Aliassime.
Audio is really important.
Damn, your title had my hopes up that Coco and Osaka had shown up to coach the guys at Laver Cup. Would have loved that badly.
Why would we want to mix them up
Of all Americans I actually think that Ben might just be the one that breaks away to win a first slam.
@@YVM3311 unlikely, Shelton actually regressed this year results wise.
I like this podcast but I don’t like the fact that you understimate sinner
People please don't ever shake Junky Sinner's hand so he doesn't test positive again. Also if you look at him directly in the eyes he can catch something. Poor guy catches everything through his thin skin. 😂
Ngl I would appreciate it if Jon hijacked the podcast and just rambled about college football for the hour lol
My feeling is keep Laver Cup as is, no woman players. And I'm a female.
Hey Andy,
Big fan of your podcast from India!
Adding women would be great!! Much better in fact, because closer competition. I think women's battle would be 🔥
Fans who's watch the laver Cup aren't normally fans of WTA matches. It's like soccer or basketball. There's not much overlap
@@droliver I mean, they are tennis fans, aren't they? And they like good battle.
Laver cup is a mens cup. Rod laver is a man. The wta are lazy and wont make their own. They just complain and want the men to make it for them. Stop trying to get the women to jump onto a successful mens idea. Make a wta version and have it at a different time and different city
it can't get any closer than this year.
@@droliver Umm there are plenty of tennis fans who watch all tennis, whatever is on, because we love tennis!!!
Please dont add woman to it. Please dont force us to watch women tennis. Besides, i can't stand sabalenka's grunt. Please
He’s not the only one who complains about the gruelling tennis calendar. Pretty much every top player agrees with him.
I don’t know a top player who doesn’t complain about the tennis schedule. They all have said the same thing for years.
Laver Cup is not very compelling and adding woman would make it even less serious
It's hard to take the players complaining of fatigue when they go play this kind of exhibition immediately after a major
Yikes. Stinky misogyny.
What's wrong with adding women.
@@dorothysmith3205 several things.
1) there’s less overlap for fans worldwide
2) the men and promoters would not be willing to take a smaller paycheck to subsidize WTA here 3) WTA calendar conflicts
4) you’re trying to not make it even more exhibition quality
Margaret Court and Serena Williams or any 2 high profile names in Womens Tennis should go make a similar cup for the Womens side... Less talk more action!
