as an italian fan of the show (and Sinner's) living in Italy, I wanted to say that he has always been big in Italy but been THAT big since the last year. it is not only about being proud of having the n.1 tennis player but there is something in Jannik 's personality (humble, down to earth, true, genuine, genuinely kind, the way he speaks, no caos...) which makes him really loved. he has a peculiar personality, though quiet and calm attracts attention.

  • @Zimlas

The TV viewership for the first match was higher for tennis than soccer because Jannik Sinner's match was broadcast on free national TV, while the soccer match was on pay TV. The final attracted around 4 million viewers for Sinner, which is impressive for Italy. However, later in the evening, the national soccer team’s match drew about 8 million viewers (both free).
Thanks to Sinner, tennis is gaining significant popularity in Italy, and the recent results are extraordinary. Nevertheless, soccer’s supremacy in the country will likely never be surpassed.
Btw he's the greatest italian sport personality since Valentino Rossi maybe, outside soccer, or including soccer perhaps.

To be fair, most of the Italian tennis players are exciting to watch right now so it makes sense why it's gaining in popularity as a sport in your country. My favorite sport is hockey and it's probably the fifth most popular team sport in the US, but it's in the perfect spot imho. You don't want your favorite sport to be the most popular, because then that usually means they water it down and milk it dry like they have done to the NFL in the US.

Damn, thats great news! Italy has the best tennis players right now (in my opinion) of any country in the world. And having a number one player helps a great deal in having tennis be more popular - I have seen the same thing happen in Serbia when Novak became a top 3 player more than 15 years ago. So I predict that Italy will have a great tennis future in next 10 years, cheers to that!

Darren Cahill clarified Sinner's comment about not playing for money..we have to also recall that when Sinner was invited to 6 Kings he wasn't number 1, I think it was even pre AO. Apparently he asked the team as he doesn't usually play exhibitions and they said why not. He was attracted by the other players going as well. He probably didn't express himself as well as he could but he was basically saying, it was a nice prize but he's not mainly motivated by money. On WADA, they aren't questioning his innocence in terms of intentionality - they seem to be challenging the no fault or negligence ruling by the Tribunal but we don't have any details as to why they think it was not applicable. Unfortunately many people out there don't understand the distinction and any length of suspension will lead them to assume doping.

The biggest sporting icons in Italian history were arguably Valentino Rossi in Motorcycling, Alberto Tomba in Skying and Marco Pantani in cycling; At least for those born in the early 80's like me. That's before the kid from South Tirol took the world of Tennis by storm and put himself in the conversation for being up there with them at only 23 years old. Fun fact: Jannik has revealed he has had amazing "winning mentality" type of conversations with both Rossi and Tomba one year ago, right when he switched into GOD mode.

To the guys at Wilson, I have a question. Please tell me if this is normal practice:
My kid is a top 10 nationally ranked player and loves Wilson. He has played with Wilson racquets for all his years. He was offered a half-sponsorship by Wilson due to his ranking which we were extremely excited about, until we read the contract.
Instead of support in terms of tournament entries, gear, apparel etc, we were required to spend thousands buying Wilson gear, apparel and gear in order to qualify for 'free gear.' In other words, to receive a tennis racquet, we had to buy a racquet and so on. The other requirement was that he only wears Wilson clothing at every single tournament. We understand this except for this fact: we are required to buy a set in order to receive one set of clothing. If we buy more sets, we don't get more sets though. It's still just one set. The problem is that he sometimes plays three tournaments in a row extending to 14 days. Given the price of Wilson clothing, we would have to buy many sets of clothing racking up even more thousands in expenses.
The terms were clear, if we do not use Wilson clothing we will receive one warning, and on the second time we forfeit the contract and have to return everything. I've tried to speak to people at Wilson but can't get in touch with anyone. When I asked questions of the agent that offered the contract, they were extremely dismissive basically saying it's either this or nothing.
To anyone reading this, is this normal? We turned it down. Are we making a mistake? I'm a truly loyal fan of the pod and a massive fan of everyone involved, but you guys are in touch with the guys at Wilson. Could they please answer as to whether this is standard practice? It sounds exploitative to me. I don't see how this is support for a top ranked player.

I only watch tennis, don't practice, but this is clearly not sponsorship it's money making with the pretense of sponsorship. You need to take kid's mind from liking just one brand, if you have to spend money then at least spend it were is more effective. If all the brands are doing the same thing, leave yourself the best economically sound option.

He even has an imitator also in a quite famous comedy program. But to be honest, we are all up for it. Italy is not like the US, we don't have these kinds of champions every week. He's a generational talent for us like Valentino Rossi, Toni or Alberto Tomba, Coppi or Pantani were (at least outside football) that made the history of sport in our country.
About the doping this, he seems to be in a zen state of some sort (kudo to his sport psychologist) but things don't look very good to be honest and the suspension could be between 1 or 2 years. For what i've seen it's not months.

His numbers in the last year and a half are insane. But as of right now comparing him to prime fed 04-08 is even more insane and dumb. Federer was winning everything except and the French, , Montecarlo, and Barcelona until Summer 08. Even if Sinner always wins 90-93% of matches until the end of his prime he still is not currently not favored against Alcarez on clay or on Grass. You know, the other 2 Slams??? When alcarez plays at his baseline level or better he can win! And he has, been victorious in all 3 matches that counted in the ATP tour this year against Sinner. Alcarez this year split the slams with sinner 2-2 I could give 100 reasons this is not in anyway near the same kinda domination that we saw in Young Prime Feds year.
This is not a weak ERA that’s actually dumbest thing I have ever heard in the chat. Competitive is one thing but the weak ERA?????? Right now the level displayed in todays game is higher than it has ever been. And the level that Alcarez and Sinner get to when playing at their highest level is in my and most other tennis players, fans, and commentator’s, opinion it is the highest level we have seen

It was one test and a confirmation followup 8 days later, not career spanning. No failed tests before or since, so quit exaggerating. And the reason he wasn't suspended was because he was found innocent of doping. Being doped without your knowledge isn't the same thing. Why do you kiddies come on here after listening to other kiddies instead of getting actual facts from the grownups? You all say the same thing and you all look foolish. 🤡

Sinner is great but such lack of competition is due to a weak era. We're going back in time before Nadal and Djokovic appeared, where Federer dominated in a weak era against lacklustre guys like Hewitt, Safin, and Ljubicic and just about squeezed between prime Sampras and Agassi and before Nadal and Nole.
