i started surfing back in 1969. I was an accomplished advanced surfer for many years up to the 2000's. Back in 1982 i rode my first thruster. The difference was unbelievable. They are in fact an easier board to ride and the single fin was no match in performance. I never bothered with a single fin again except in very large waves (double to triple overhead). The thruster as far as i am concerned is the best performing board on the planet.
This vid is awesome...its exactly how I surf my 10'6 single fin. You can also rail grab backside toward the peak and then go for a gnarly bottom turn. Also recommend getting VERY FLEXIBLE center with less area. The board will whip back center it will add a lot of color to your maneuvers. LOVE THE NUBS!
Good explanation. Been riding a hybrid thruster for many years. Yes it will do things an old single never would, but I never really bonded with 3 fins because of how they turn. A single has a connected flow that gives you a better feel of the wave's energy. Basic formula was drive straight down in a crouch, hit the bottom and unweight for the speed and drive to go straight up, bank off the lip and drive it down the line.
I recently adopted an old late 60's or early 70's single fin pocket rocket and have been trying to figure out how to surf it, this helped me a lot! It's totally unique but i hadn't figured out how, you really put a pin in it. Thank you!
Sorry guys but the reason you can’t figure out how to surf a single fin is because the fin drags on you. You’re trying to ride them like a thruster in your head. This man is telling u exactly how to ride it. A lot of older surfers don’t go back to single because we never forgot the first few good waves we got on our thrusters. We had to adjust to having a ton of speed on a thruster and the boards were wider but the drive surpassed any rides we ever had on a single. When you get on a single for the first time the drive is gone. Sure u will eventually learn to build speed on a single but u will be confused for awhile.
I appreciate the video man, Im starting to get back into single fin after a decade of thrusting only. I found an old channin i got as a kid at my dads recently and have been fixing it up. I totally agree fin placement changes the whole feel of the board. Anyways, i liked your vid
You can just stand on a skateboard and it will roll -no need to pump around side to side , just like a single fin short board. Centered feeling, lock and load. (you won't get the performance of a multi fin but singles are the most rewarding.)
Good video bro. I started on single fins in 1973 and I still have a gem from 1075. Might be a bitch to duck dive but in every other department a real winner. I love single fins and they give me pure surfing. Ie pure surfing on a longer board or shorter and from a 1 foot wave to 35 feet.
I just got my first single fin. I’m moving up from a 8’ foamie to a 6’8” single fin. It will be a huge learning curve but I am much more attracted to this style of surfing. I’m surfing tomorrow and hoping this video will help! Any tips appreciated
single fins are just like other surfboards. different shapes need different rails. Doesn't matter if you have 1, 2, 3, or 4 fins. The rails are about what you want in the board. Single fins can work in many kinds of shapes...

style is everything , single fin will show you the way
Totally agree that fin placement and fin style/size makes a huge difference on a single fin. You really need to spend time finding the right setup.

Watch old Buttons videos. Try to find ones he talks a bit in. Larry Bert too. Straight legendary single fin riders.

Yes, here's my tip.... Go surfing every day for 3 months... The only way to master anything is through discipline and repetition. Have fun
awesome bro love watching you share your passion thank you
Thanks for this brother this was great!
Thanks Colonel!
what a good video man thanks
Anyone wants to see how a single fin egg shape can be powered with the fin, watch Wayne Lynch.
Lynch surfing in France and then Puerto Rico World Contest 1968 and the film Evolution !
How about the rails? They look pretty hard edge on the bottom, I heard softer rails are better for hold with a single fin.

How do I pick the right fin for my single fin board
Brian Blanchard rule of thumb I go one inch per foot for fin size with a thicker base on the fin
Site is down 😞
Hey Man Chur for the video, Single Finz rulee oneday we ride BRAH :]
Was this before you met your BPD ex?
What about when Mother Nature says your ride is over and starts putting white water ahead of you; isn’t that when you wanna do those radical airs?
Well, I don't because Im too old and heavy and I never learned to air... but I guess that would be the good time to end your wave with a crescendo!
BTW: very good vid, thanks for passing on the good oil.
