Ahhhh, takes me back to the days of old! Vertical drops, huge, carving bottom turns and roundhouses off the lips. Life wasn't so "snappy" on single fins! These guys now are doing things we never thought possible! I grew up looking to Lopez, Ho, Rabbit, Ian Cairns, Thomson etc. to show the way. You guys of today are incredible and I salute you, and your style!
@@rumtum99 Evolution, indeed. Just as those guys I mentioned were so far ahead of Duke and company, especially equipment wise. Thanks for the kind words....
I am a 58 year old surfer from Morocco started to surf at age 8 and quit , then came back to this beautiful sport few years ago. For me , and opinions will differ, I can say without a doubt that JJ Florence is by far the most talented surfer I have ever seen, since Shaun Thomson (which I met in South Africa). his flow is just magic as if he is just part of the wave....PS I still surf my old Mark Richard 1979 single fin and it does great!
A couple of years ago I was having beers with my bro and we were watching Morning of the Earth. I got over-inspired and the following day I ordered a single fin board (a oneee!) from Adams Surfboards UK. Needless to say in my dreams I imagined I would be doing stuff like in this video. No man, this didn't happen. The reality is I am going straight along the wave and never in the right place at the right time to turn it properly. So much harder than it looks, props to the guys back in the day!
John I used to ride a Horan inspired double winged swallow tail single fin with a massive fin back in the 80's. That thing was absolute magic. Singles have a glide that is unparalleled. However - they are a real bear to pump up to speed and have a nasty habit of sliding out unexpectedly on steep drops. IMO the modern equipment is far superior in almost every way, except that glide, mmmmmm what a feeling! Enjoy, be positive setting the rail, dont slide out, it hurts. Greetings from Kommetjie Cape Town (we met once at the Green Room restaurant)
The barrels are fantastic too watch but it’s when he cuts deep into the wave and throws that huge what we call in water skiing a rooster 🐓 tail. Thing of beauty!!
JJF, mom Florence thank you 😃🤙 single looked awesome 😀 your moms right ,so when you finish with short boards then become a long board world champion that would be cool right..?
just beautiful!! not be so big that even in my imagination, I might be able to catch that wave… i’m also quite impressed with a very active surfer on a red board taking the left in most of the sequences!
Yo John i hope you see this comment, you know how random companies will get people to go over other people's footage. It would be really REALLLLLY cool to see gerry lopez watching this video and talking over it (keep the music in the background cuz its also awesome).
Cool story and waves but in all reality these boards are really not like the singles most of us grew up riding. These are still wafer thin and light by comparison to the old McCoys et al that were 3.1/4" thick and had 2-3 layers of heavy glass. Much harder to ride those boards back in the day. Would love to see guys like JJF give one of those oldies a go.
'Point and shoot' were my exact thoughts too. Also deeply love them. The hold in the barrel is like nothing else. Absolute dogs to turn at beach breaks though!
Deje vu still it's straight down then full bottom turn into the stall like kick the nose up till the the boards vert then it slaps down your dead stopped getting sucked up the face till you pop the fin and rail slide down getting spit ih yeah got the t shirt
Now go look back at Buttons.... Or Larry Bertleman..... You'll get a real appreciation for just how sick they were. The cutbacks they were doing in '77..... without leashes. The leash cup had not been invented yet..... neither had polyurethane....
@@CJ-bw2nm No.... A leash is a polyurethane cord.... epoxy is what they started using instead of resin with fiberglass..... The first leashed were bungee cords. Then polyurethane.... Maybe they're using epoxy for leashes now. But I doubt it..... But the real point was how fluid the cutbacks Buttons, Larry and Mark Liddell were doing in the mid to late 70's. The "no leashes" part was just for flavor.
how it works. U start learn and ride a single fin your first day of surfing ever. U ride a 6'0 pintail for 3 yrs in every condition. Than u change to tri fin. That is the secret. Your welcome.

Blondie is a bad ass surfer! Wonderful to see. Like those deep tube rides!!
Bwwwaaaaa!! That’s some sad truth bro 😂😂😂 but i guess that’s what happens when you’ve been surfing it almost everyday for 20+ years

I like how stoked and surprised you mom was with the results “you should long board” lol great!!

Keep at it! Learning how to surf alternate equipment of all shapes, sizes, and fin set ups will improve your surfing no end
I feel old now! My first board was a single fin, my second a favorite was a Thruster channel bottom. But I dig the 60 sound track!

sounds like a board whipped up by Ben Aipa?
@@chrispewkreme no it was a New Zealand board shaper Roger Hall

Worked for Gerry, seems to work just fine here as well. Bring back the Bonzer, I say.
