The Greatest Villain in Cartoon History
#wackyraces #dickdastardly #videoessay
This video took me longer than it probably should have. I'm going to try mixing in less editing intense videos with the more highly edited ones to see if I can put out videos quicker. Anyways, thanks for watching!
A great profile on my favourite cartoon character of all time. Your conclusion at 15:00 pretty much sums up why I love him so much.
7:46: Although, some people believe the replay footage was indoctored, as we saw Dastardly win without that extension... but then again, it didn't stop Peter Perfect and Rufus Roughcut from winning the Race by doing the same tactic. Regardless, there's a certain bias on how he was treated.
you forgot to mention that in the late 2000's Dick and Muttley did appear in the unsold pilot Wacky Races Forever where he works for a man name Vic Roy who plans to take over Perfect Industries by making sure Parker and Pipper Perfect would lose the race. (Fun Facts: In the pilot, Dick is voiced by Jim Cummings, who also voiced Tigger in Winnie the Pooh after Paul death and that in the pilot, Peter and Penelope are married)
Dastardly is an example of a comedic over-the-top villain who loves being evil for the fun of it, done right.
Interesting note about the Wacky Races is that it was super popular in Japan. So if you ever wondered why a villain of Japanese origin looks similar to Dick or why an anime has a Wacky Race inspired episode, there's your answer. And yes, Waluigi was probably inspired by Dick Dastardly, as well as other Dastardly descendants like Boyacky.
Are you referring to an episode of Pop Team Epic, where there’s a duo of racing cheaters who blatantly resemble Dastardly and Muttley, albeit mosaic censored for parody purposes?
@@InAnimateGamer i.ibb.co/xmhzDhD/WRAnime.png
there's way more
Maybe because that, waluigi also looks like dastardly
@@Lcs546 Yep
There's also the Bowler Hat Guy from Meet the Robinsons, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Chef Pig from Angry Birds, Sinestro from DC, Dr. Robotnik from Sonic, and Robbie Rotten from Lazy Town were all inspired by Dick
As the internet's "Wacky Races" guy, i've been waiting for a video like this for a LONG time.
Wacky races was a hit here in Brazil during the 80s, 90s and 00s
I grew up watching it
Raios duplos
@@Blankult mutleeeeeey
It should probably be worth mentioning technical appearances of Dastardly, as the Dread Baron in Yogi Bear and the Spruce Goose movie or Laff-A-Lympics (the former being voiced by Paul Winchell while the latter apparently is not), complete with the dog assistant named Mumbly (both mirror their Wacky Races counterparts).
And unrelated, they parodied Dastardly and Muttley on episode 4 of Pop Team Epic season 1 as cheating racers who are mosaic censored (done as a joke of trying to “bypass” copyright infringement).
So I'm not the only one who's convinced that it's "Catch the pigeon" not "Stop the pigeon".
But how? The song is "Stop the pigeon" over and over again 😂
Stop that pigeon now.!
Good video, though I think it would have been good to point out the whole debacle with Dastardly and Mutley being replaced by obvious stand ins for the Laugh-a-lympics special and the Goose Boose movie, initially as a result of right disputes between Hanna-Barbera and Heatter-Quigley Productions.
Bravo. I always thought that Dick Dastardly was H-B's re-working of Wile E' Coyote. Especially during the "Flying Machines" series.
MUTTTLEY! DO SOMETHING!
Robot Dr. Phil made me lose my shit. Why does this video not have at LEAST 10,000 views yet. It should have like... 100,000 at LEAST
"Dick Dastardly and Muttley with sick laughter A gun fight and they come to cut the mixmaster" RIP MF DOOM
God I love The Great Race, I am so glad someone finally mentioned it, even briefly.
In my opinion, Dick Dastardly is one of the cutest cartoon villains. He gets so sweet when he’s not angry and sometimes shows feelings and humanity towards Muttley and others. In Scoob! he’s a scary villain, but in “Flying Machines” I think he’s more like an anti-hero.
R.I.P Paul Winchell
In the later cartoon from H-B,The Smufs, their arch-foe was wizard Gargamel...who sounded exactly like Dick Dastardly. (Paul Winchell did a lot for H-B productions.)
WELL ACTUALLY it was Jasper and Jinx at first, Tom and Jerry became the new names some time after.
Wacky Races reboot is actually very good.
Fun fact the actual footage before the replay he clearly doesn’t extend his car out and comes first so they robbed him
a very good video about (one of) my favourite villain(s) and i love the film too! and i still pretend the dark DC comic never existed
To be fair, I think a lot of people used to call it Catch The Pidgeon as well.
Loved this video, no clue how you don't have more subscribers!
“Who in their right mind replaces their wheels with buzzsaws?” *Hollow Knight flashbacks*
There was a show I remember watching, that was just about the group of mafia (?) midgets saving a damsel from someone who looked like dastardly but had a disguise of some kind. Could someone please tell me the show's name, it's been driving me nuts for YEARS!
That’s actually The Perils of Penelope Pitstop. It features both Penelope Pitstop and The Anthill Mob, the villain is called The Hooded Claw and is actually another character in disguise. Hope this helps!
@@johnscully394 THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
This video forgot to mention that British comedian Terry-Thomas had a very big influence on Dick Dastardly, more so than Jack Lemon. Take for example Terry-Thomas's dirty schemes to win the London to Paris air race in THOSE MAGINICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES by sabotouging the other pilots' planes. DD did the the same thing in WACKY RACES. This video also forgot to mention Dastardly and Muttley's appearance in the 1990-91 series the FENDER BENDER 500, a segment of WAKE RATTLE ANND ROLL. In that cartoon DD wore the same uniform he wore in the WACKY RACES and he drove the Mean Machine as he did in WR with a few modification and it was rechristened the Dirty Truckster. Both WACKY RACES & DASTARDLY & MUTTLEY were cartoon versions OF THE GREAT RACE & THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THE THEIR FLYING MACHINES, the former a combination of both. Personally, I like Dick Dastardly more than Jack Lemon's Professor Fate.
Dick Dastardly is the best version of Waluigi we'll ever get.
I actually like the Scoob! version despite how different he is (he's one of the few things I liked about that movie) and I would honestly love to see an adaptation of the Dastardly and Muttley comic one day.
This was super well put together. Nicely done
Am I the only one confused as to why Dick became a WWI flying ace in his spin-offs? Is the Red Max angry about having his gimmick stolen?
They must have been competing aces.
#Correction "Tom" and "Jerry" were named Jasper and Jinx in their first appearance.
Sad thing is that he would have won if he did it legitimately.
Whenever you hear the word villain, what images does it conjure in your head?
It reminds me of myself.
I think that Dick dastardly is a villain with a heart of gold and he would always be one of my favorites
Drat! Double drat!
To this day when i make coffee for me ma she tells me
Push the button Max
Dick Dastardly is the embodiment of all openly evil funny villains, and I love him for that!
New channel new video found. Loving it
I think we can go deeper into the origins of doctor fate, who himself was patterned over the villains of old silent movies. He shares many elements with Snidely Whiplash of Duddley Do-Right, who himself is a take off from "O'Malley of the Mountain". I couldn't tell you who the ur-example of the mustache twirling evil villain would be, but Dick Darstardly comes from a longer line of villains then you suspect
Honestly, now I NEED to read the Ennis book and watch Scoob. That's hilarious!
And it makes sense that his presence in Scoob is BECAUSE he failed hard AF, but got his best friend screwed over as a result. Likely because Muttley didnt want his friend to suffer even more than he already has. That's a good and almost heartwarming turn for him. And I think he's done the same for Muttley in one of his previous incarnations.
Dick did have an appearance in South Park on season 18
I'd argue Dick Dastardly's look is more influenced by Terry-Thomas, the antagonist in _Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines,_ which beat _The Great Race_ to the big screen by about two weeks. Smeared with a thick coat of Snidley Whiplash from _Dudley Do-Right._
I just realized that old Cartoon Network did some Hanna Barbara references in their old days like Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls and such but not a single reference to Dick Dastardly and Muttley, that's extremely disappointing.
For example Samurai Jack has had Hanna Barbara references too including the old sound effects. Can you imagine Dick Dastardly and Muttley reimagined as Bounty Hunters in Samurai Jack as a cameo appearance, wouldn that be cool?
Such a missed opportunity even from a studio of animators who were big fans of Hanna Barbara :(
Dexter's Lab had an entire parody of Wacky Races for an episode, I think Mandark was the stand in for Dick Dastardly?
7:02 tigger invented the artificial heart
If Rabbit only realized there is so much more to Tigger than meets the eye.
My favorite twirly mustache villain alongside Captain Hook and Bowler Hat Guy.
I actually thought Bowler Hat Guy was based on Dastardly!
@@gingaddict Agree.
He was also in the Yogi Bear and The Sproose Goose movie
A gun fight and they come to cut the mix master
The Hanna Barbera and beyond one is interesting.
For someone who loved these cartoons, it is kinda haunting that they never brought back Zilly and Clunk in Yogi's treasure hunt
The thing is, like you mentioned, DD is often way ahead in the race, when he goes to sabotage. ALSO, almost ALL of the other racers cheat. When DD was setback for cheating, a lot of the other cars had similar gadgets, that had features that were just as egregious. Even though DD sabotaged himself & usually got what he deserved, the race also was likely rigged against him. Perfect's car could also extend its nose & you know he'd never be called out for using that.
11:11 I never knew that there was a live-action Dick Dastardly. What movie/show is this from?
It's for a car add
South Park also did a Wacky Racers parody with Dastardly and Muttley
You missed Dick and Muttley's appearance in "Fender Bender 500", an animated segment of "Wake, Rattle, and Roll" (1990), a sequel of Wacky Racers where the competitors were classic Hanna Barbera characters in monster trucks, the most interesting thing is that Dick managed to win some of the races.
Yogi Bear and Bear and Boo Boo in #1, the Jellystone Jammer; Huckleberry Hound in #2, the Half Dog Half Cat Halftrack; Magilla Gorilla and Wally Gator in #3, the Swamp Stomper; Top Cat and Choo Choo in #4, the Alley Cat; Quick Draw McGraw and Baba Looey in #5, the Texas Twister; Pixie and Dixie in #6, the Cheddar Shredder; Auggie Doggie & Doggie Daddy in #7 the Lucky Trucky; Winsome Witch, her cat Lucky and skeleton friend Axel in #13, the Sonic Broom and finally Dastardly and Muttley in #00 the Dirty Truckster. But what about trucks 8, 9, 10, 11, 12? In Fender Bender 500 there were only 9 cars instead 11 as in WACKY RACES.
I would like to see the one... Penelope Pitstop ❤
best one yet
11:26 Mad Dastardly or Dick Max?
What was the old timey song you used in the first minute?
The character Dick plays is older than the great race, you left out all sorts of evil mustache twirling villains from the silent era. I feel like Snidely Whiplash from the Dudley Dooright cartoons might be older that Dick too.
I believe that the three dick dastardly are definitely related and I think that the concept works amazingly
Isn't the Dastardly from the first season of Wacky Races the same as the one from the last season? If that was his father then shouldn't the other racers be older than the Dastardly from the last season? Is it implied that Dastardly 2 was into racing or is he just not mentioned? Also are there 2 or 3 Muttleys then?
I can believe that the dastardly name does have three decents which has all three original dastardly has related to each other and for the record all three of them are careless About their planet and I liked them all and dastardly jr.'s grandfather had designed some of his projects as well
More horror crap right after the Banana Splits. Is this the kids like the watch?
you forgot to talk about wake rattle and roll
You forgot Fender Bender 500! Dick was in that!
That was brilliant thank you 😊
What about muttly's solo outing as a police detective?
DUDE! WELLDONE!
DIC.
He always loses, I just wish he would win at least ONE race or two. (Drat and Double Drat)
