Adult Swim was genius because right after Cartoon Network they would play King of the Hill. An adult show that was for adults but wasn’t nearly as explicit compared to other shows. Kinda like the Simpsons. It was a perfect transition from kids shows to adult shows because it basically gave Parents an hour to tell their kids to change the channel before Family Guy came on.

As a 90’s kid, this is basically a synopsis of 80% of what I watched from my youth, through my teens, and into adulthood, to today. I gotta say, it was an awesome time to be growing up, and it has definitely shaped my interests and humor. Now all those old shows are so spread out across multiple streaming services that it’s impossible to just turn on the tv and watch such a great selection. Instead you need half a dozen different subscriptions, and you don’t get the same variety that we used to, it’s more a binge style of a couple shows at a time. I hardly ever watch tv anymore, and when I want to watch either a new or old show I usually just find where I can watch it, get the subscription for a month, and binge it before the letting the subscription lapse. I’m kinda surprised you didn’t mention WB but I guess they were much more kid friendly and fit less with the theme you were going for, even though they had stuff like Animaniacs which definitely had adult humor subtly placed where kids wouldn’t get it.

I think Animaniacs belonged to a cultural zeitgeist that was nearly ahead of its time, or more probably, focused / related to people who were not necessarily serviced by other shows. I think of Animaniacs being a precursor to Family Guy in a way that Simpsons in the 1990's was more in line with South Park into the 2000's.

Some of the best memories I have of my dad were watching Ren and Stimpy, South Park, the Simpsons and family guy. I was in elementary school and it was really fun for me to be watching these adult humor cartoons with him. My grandparents scolded him for letting me watch these raunchy cartoons so it was kind of a cool rebellious time with me and my dad staying up late on a school night to watch adult swim together. Seeing these cartoons will always make me think of my dad and smile. I miss him a lot.

The way all of the characters play off of each other, and the way Arlen feels so real and grounded was awesome. Not to mention I’ve lived in Texas my whole life so a lot of the day to day moments are really relatable to me.

My aunt used to judge me for watching cartoons. Even when her kids would catch me watching them they'll judge me for it lol. When you think about it, most kids don't even like cartoons since we're living in a more digital world. All they wanna watch is tiktok and youtube videos. I also find it weird whenever people get judged for wearing shirts of cartoon characters but people don't bat an eye when people wear sports shirts or shirts of athletes ? Why isn't it considered "childish" when people are into sports ? People started off playing sports as kids yet it's socially acceptable for them to be into them as an adult. I love live action shows, but cartoons just hit different for me. I love shows like rugrats, scooby-doo, looney tunes, ed edd n eddy, the powerpuff girls, johnny bravo, american dragon jake long, foster's home for imaginary friends, hi hi puffy ami yumi, kim possible, tiny toon adventures, animaniacs, life as a teenage robot, the boondocks, south park, lastman, spongebob, the fairly oddparents, drawn together, danny phantom, class of 3000, totally spies, teen titans, jimmy neutron, the fairly oddparents, dexter's laboratory, jackie chan adventures, and the proud family.

As you said, with streaming apps, there are some bound to only produce one type of content, but I’ve also heard from many folks that there is too many streaming apps so they don’t bother with it. Gotta add in some corrections:
Adult Swim didn't introduce the US to anime (it definitely introduced us to Cowboy Bebop).
There was an already existing, anime-heavy block of time on Cartoon Network called Toonami, which existed since the mid-90's.
Toonami also aired many Gundam shows, including Gundam Wing, G-Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam. But also aired Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Tenchi Muyo!, and more.
AND on top of that, Toonami had a block late at night called "Midnight Run" where they would air, usually uncensored episodes of Gundam Wing.

You should do a video about the connection between Adult Swim & music. They embraced a lot of newer more eccentric sounds and styles like Flylo and Knxwledge who have only recently (past 10 years) been getting their due recognition despite producing for almost 10 years before that. Also the singles program circa 09' and beyond (probably still going on) put people onto a lot of new music too.

As someone who genuinely loves animation as a medium and who tries to explain to people this exact thing, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'll drink some water to ya.

I knew I knew you from somewhere… I used to watch your hip hop related content and I have to say, this is a major upgrade. The sheer amount of research you put into this, wow. As a non-american, I now also have a broad overview of the shows (and the history behind them) I see all the time referenced in pop culture. Your editing style is very lowkey but effective, I love it. This was amazing, keep it up :)

hmm he forgot to mention the entire Mtv cartoons from the early 2000's that were very sexual and violent... he also forgot to mention aeon flux and barely mentioned anime. It was very focused on American shows of Adult Swim.
