I have the SE DGT Gold Top. After a couple of months owning it, I sold my Les Paul Standard. Didn't see any need to hang on to the Gibson, now that I have the PRS. Absolutely love it.
I just played my Gibson Les Paul Standard & realized it's too heavy for me now (got a lot older). Thinking of getting this SE DGT if the neck Profile is suitable for my hand. Was your Les Paul a fat 50s neck? Mine is the slim taper 60s.
I’m a beginner level guitarist and I’m 62. I bought this guitar and it has inspired me to keep working to get better. My few cowboy chords are not enough for the instrument. I’m signed up for Tim Pierce beginner coarse. It is the most guitar for the most people. It gives professional quality for professionals and true beginners at that Goldie Locks price point. Your playing is just so good that it makes me realize how much better this guitar is in the hands of an artist. Thanks
John, one amazing quality of your playing is that your touch is very consistent over numerous guitars. Because of this, you’ve become an important resource. I found myself checking out your demos when I’ve either purchased a guitar, or I’m considering a purchase. I just bought a used PRS SE DGT, a guitar which has become very desirable these days. This demo reassured me that I made a good choice. Many thanks for the time and effort you put into these reviews.
Still loving mine two months in, more than I expected for sure as someone who was previously a PRS sceptic to say the least. Glad the SE isn't carved myself as not a fan of it so doubly happy.
After watching your first vid about this guitar I researched it a bit further and bought one myself.. from the music shop in Scotland. I’ve only ever owned a PRS acoustic which is amazing- the ones done in conjunction with martin Simpson. It’s totally different to any of my other guitars - a lot more modern than my usual “Boomer” (😂)axes- apart from the Mansons that I play.. I think it plays lovely and the high frets make me relax a little with my left hand which is a good thing…really glad I bought it and honestly it’s way too cheap!! Thanks, john for getting it into my face.
After get my SE DGT, I absolutely love mine. Very sweet tone and very versatile. You were a big part of my decision to get one. I made the right choice.
I just got a goldtop se dgt. I have 5 cores and 4 se's now. The dgt quality and performance is up there with my core models, it's that good. I'll replace the tuners with locking ones and I have a usa Mann-made bridge to drop into it. I'm also using the neck mostly in single coil mode, so I'll switch the tap lead so that down is split for the neck, and up is split for the bridge. Either that, or I'll add a second push-pull and separate the coil taps. I also noticed the resistors in line on the coil splits in addition to the treble bleeds, which is what they have on the core models. It allows for some of the second coil to remain in the circuit so the volume drop isn't really huge, and there's still a slight noise reduction. Simple, but effective. Overall and really great guitar.
The DGT SE reminds me so much of a classic Les Paul...its the most LP to me for some reason even though I know the McCarty should be. It just hits the tones and playability so well. Gold top with dots for the win :)
Just bought one today. Ordered the PRS Lampshade knobs, just for esthetics. This is my 5th SE never been disappointed with any of them. Great review!🤘🏻
I have a PRS Mikael Akerfeldt signature SE model and love it. Red flamed maple top, ebony fret board with 24 jumbo frets, absolute shredder with lots of tonal options.
I love my GoldTop DGT SE as well.. I find the balance between the two pickups quite astonishing to be honest, and the treble bleed on the volume knobs - which makes the two low output humbuckers usable for many different situations - together with the solid vibrato bridge, make the instrument gig ready from the get go, and the whole playing experience comfortable and truly enjoyable. The most important thing though is that this thing has tons of mojo (which might not be the case for many of the company's other models); the reason behind that is the combination of the beautiful vintage sounds one is able to get from the pickups, the classy looks, and most importantly, the lovely feel of the neck, which succeeds in making you want to grab the guitar all the time.
I have been interested in that PRS for a while, and your videos basically convinced me to pull the trigger. I bought it recently and it really does punch above its weight. I am loving it. The split really is where the guitar shines plus it’s really comfortable
I have the Pro 2 and I'm not really loving it year after, and also it's on a heavier side. I'm thinking of selling it and buying the DGT SE. Are these heavy and how do you compare it to a Pro 2?
I have fender american pro2 and prs dgt core. I love prs dgt over american pro2. Strat sounds like a toy and dgt sounds more serious. Not too serious or heavy as gibson so it is a nice middle ground.
It’s a very tool like guitar if that’s a thing. It’s well built, sounds good, isn’t silly money and it just works. Consistently. I’ve used it live and for recording and I’ve not gone wrong with it. Plug it in, mess about with your settings a little and you’re off. If you could only have one guitar, this would be a good choice.
I picked up one locally on a really good deal fully intending on flipping it for a profit.... but then I played it for a bit and was absolutely stunned at the playability, tone, and quality... not just "for the money" but even head to head with other guitars I own that are worth 3 times as much. I don't even have any desire to replace the stock pickups which is super rare for me. Only changes I've made were USA knobs like in the vid and strap buttons, and then I added the John Mann drop in locking tuners (even though there wasn't necessarily anything wrong with the stock tuners). Great instrument that I can't wait to gig with! ☮❤🎶
Still enjoying mine quite a bit. I wanted a gold top, but they were sold out everywhere when I was buying, so I bought the sunburst. Not a big deal - its pretty too. I have the defective nut (doesn't go to the edge of the neck on the bass side) which I've heard others comment on as well, but it doesn't impact playability. I can't make it sound like you JOhn, but it sounds great anyway 😁
Well Jonny lad, I currently have 2 SE DGT guitars (one fmt and one get). Both are splendid instruments. Period. That said, I probably will buy a core DGT yet this year.
I bought the DGT core and sent it back because I didn’t like the neck at all. I then played a DGT SE and loved the neck and playability so bought a gold top DGT SE which is absolutely worth the money and a great guitar. Have gone down the PRS rabbit hole.
I have the same DGT SE as yours, have had it since it came out, i must admit i have fallen deeper in love with this guitar the longer i have it. It is my main go to guitar now
I'm having a very similar experience right now. I'm also a long time Strat player and I got my first PRS recently. In my case the Custom SE 24-08 so instead of a pull knob for single coil tones I have two small toggle switches which I prefer. That way, I can have like bridge single mixed with neck humbucker or vice versa. I'm noticing some of the same things in terms of the treble bleed preserving highs when lowering the guitar volume. It's great. On mine, I replaced the tuners with Graphtech locking ones and that did help tuning so did putting 10s on it. I have 10s on my other guitars so this makes sense for me Also, I replaced the built-in trem with a Vega-Trem which I've had on my Strat for a while and absolutely love. To me, that improved the playing field considerably and also improved tuning. That makes it a pricier guitar but it really plays great now! Even with the major mods I'm under 2K (Canadian dollars). I'm getting used to the tone which is definitely not what I'm used to but, in my case I find it truly shines with gain. Amazing power chording tones and searing leads. Clean, I have to get used to it. I've had my Strat for decades and that single coild clean tone (position 2) is home for me so the PRS is an adjustment. It does feel like a much pricier guitar though.
I have a standard 24-08, got it on offer from andertons for a ridiculously cheap price. No quality issues with it at all. I put a trem blocker in so it only goes down (oo-er missus). Used it live a couple of times, plays great. Amazing for the dosh. Treble bleed works really well. And I set the pickup switches so the neck is single coil and the bridge is humbucker. Doesnt aound like a strat single coil neck, but decent enough. Be interested to see what you make of one of these John, as it's half the price of a DGT SE.
I recently acquired the gold top and I'm enjoying it. I now have 5 different PRS guitars, and I prefer this to the others. Nonetheless, all are great, love their playability.
Man, I was absolutely glued to the intro track. Fantastic playing! My SE McCarty 594 is a damn fine ass. The SE line isn’t quite on par with my American axes, but they’re really close.
Loved the SE DGT. Wish the Goldtop came with birds. Would be interested to see if they offer other colors in the years to come. Also if they offered a SE DGT semi-hollow… I think that would be hard to pass up.
I bought the goldtop version about 2 months ago and have barely touched any of my other guitars since! Maybe the honeymoon period never ends? If they made a hardtail version I’d buy that one too and might not need another guitar - as others have mentioned, this guitar is the best “desert island” guitar I’ve ever owned, and selling some of my others seems a lot more reasonable having gotten used to how amazing this guitar is. I have no idea why you’d spend significantly more money for the Core version given how well this one sings! Get one if you’re on the fence, it’s hard to imagine that purchase going wrong.
I agree I love my DGT SE, I had the Core DGT and really, don't feel any need to get the Core back. If you want a hardtail PRS, I would strogly suggest the Paul's guitar SE. Damn I love mine. If I hve to choose 1 would keep the SGT only because tehe pickups are more my liking (more vinntage oriented), and the I think los looks better, but the Paul's guitar overall are lighter, and the playability I think is the best of all PRS Ive had (tied with the Soapbar core mccarty Ive had) I think the wide fat neck and medium jumbo frets are just superb. dont get me wrong the DGT plays awesome, but I find the pauls even better if its possible. Each one gives me something, so love having both. Plus I do love the abalone bird inlys in the paul's guitar.
I’m playing my DGT SE sunburst as I’m watching this video. I like the guitar. It plays great and sounds good. There are some parts that feel a little cheap (guitar output jack, slightly rough frets), but overall I think it is a good guitar. I have two other DGT core guitars.
A treble bleed circuit (when well tuned) is one of the best upgrades that can be done on humbucker guitars if you play a single channel amp. With this you can really control the gain dynamically and go to nearly clean just by rolling off the volume.
As usual some tasteful playing ;) One note: it comes with 10s from the factory (PRS Classic, .010-.046). I have not measured them but they do feel stiffer than 9s on my other PRS (same scale length)
Definitely enjoy my S2's and student edition Santana (it's actually fun to battle with the pickups... magnet changes before I change them out) If I was forced to sell something, they would go Loooong before my Les Paul's. Long before.
I find myself picking up the DGT SE more than any of my other guitars. honestly an amazing instrument for the price. One issue I have is with the tremolo arm, it is much looser than I was hoping it would be
I bought an SE Custom 24 back during the pandemic. Even though the build quality was really good and it played great, I never bonded with it. I was hoping it would cover more bases than it did. I eventually sold it (took forever to find a buyer!).
I found the SE DGT to be fine. It felt like a PRS, played well (specially with the 9s) and sounded decent. not sure I gelled with the control layout but sure I'd get used to it with time. I think the pickups maybe lacked some character, specially compared to the 53/10s, but i wouldn't really expect to match the USA models. And i guess that all comes down to personal preference. If you want a smoother more unified sound they might be just what you're after. I don't think I'd be in the market to ever buy one though, I've always gone for higher end models secondhand rather than a lower model new.
I got a good deal on a used core last year, and then when this came out I grabbed a gold top, expecting to send it back. I like the SE better than the core in some ways. Selling the core.
I was watching Incubus live on UA-cam last night, he used to play PRS and he was pretty much sticking to a Tele, I was kinda surprised how good it sounded
interesting thing to note, the single coil split on the DGT SE does seem to go to the inner coils, at least that's what tapping it with a screwdriver seems to indicate. Therefore the position with both PU and neck rolled down slightly give a pretty stratty tone, which i like very much. To check out if there's an improvement in the Coremodel, I bought one used in my favourite hue, darkcheryburst, and as I like the PUs in there a lot more on their own and even in coilsplit, the coilsplit in these is different, as they use the outer coils. But this let's the middle position sound way less stratty, as the coils are as distant from each other as in a Tele. Bummer...but still hard to decide which one's the better instrument.
Hi John, great that you still like your DGT after the honeymoon. Maybe you can even consider to try playing it without protection foil of the humbuckers now 😉? Who knows, maybe different...
I still love mine. My only gripes are the tone knob push pull being too lose so I keep accidentally rolling down the tone when coming in and out of splitting, and the toggle being all the way at the back.
Loving my DGT SE . Neck could have been a bit smaller .but the treble bleeds are excellent. I also switched the Volume controls as there is enough slack in the control cavity. Enjoy !
@@gdawgs101 I think @cliverkay physically swapped the 2 pots around in order to not have to resolder things 😉 On the DGT, the front volume pot controls the back pickup (and vice versa). Works for David, but I'd personally hate it.
Still very fizzy about my SE DGT. Every time i pick it up I'm always happy with how it sounds (sometimes in spite of me!) and feels. My only issue is how it looks, I think I got a really bad finish on mine as it's quite pale and lifeless. Almost every other one I've seen seems more bright and vibrant. That aside, it's great
Get you a really good polishing cloth. Go over the guitar anytime you think about it. Don’t be in a hurry and one day you will walk in the room and be really glad you did.
@bryantwalley I genuinely think mine is lacking colour, it's so much more green rather than orange. I'm not sure wearing the nitro will do much for the colour
I've got the DGT se and the DGT core, both great guitars but I find myself reaching for the se model most of the time, just something about it that I prefer.
Don't put too much thought in everything. Unleash the "Hendrix/Gilmour/Winter" in you. Unleash your sword! (your sound). I am a synth guy with a guitar. On the synth side of things it is kinds the same... Just make sounds no matter on how nice or terrible the process was to make em.
My only complaint with the dgt is that i would like to have the bound fretboard. Ive got it on my 245 and my 594 and i think it just looks more upscale and feels more premium.
Great review love your playing loafs of feel the guitar sounds like a old les Paul beautiful musical instrument very articulate I’m getting one soon want the cold top classic look 😂😂😂😂could us that guitar at any level of playing to
For the price, this thing is hard to beat. I would suggest looking for something used if you don’t want to spend 4K on a core model. Almost pulled the trigger on a red single cut for 1600. My wife must be happy I didn’t tho 😂
I wanted a PRS so badly. Then I finally bought one. I loved the quality of workmanship. However, there was nothing about the sound that made me love it. I returned it. Just wasn’t for me.
I got a Gold top DGT SE last fall. It sounds amazing but I have had some quality control issues for sure. The neck moves like nothing I have seen. I have had to make a lot of neck adjustments on it just to keep the string action playable. I am guessing they didn't let the neck wood dry out enough. I have never seen this with any of my other guitars. The initial setup from PRS was the worst I have ever seen as well. When I received it the action was crazy high. It took a lot of work to get it dialed in and now I have some serious fret buzz at the 10th and 11th frets but only on two strings, which tells me that the frets are not level. I have replaced the tuners with locking tuners, and added the same core knobs you have. This past week one of the pickup rings started warping and has pulled away from the bridge pickup. Not sure how that has happened. All in all, you get what you pay for and while the DGT SE sounds great there are issues.
@@michaelclarkphoto Unfortunate. Good news is, because it's a PRS, you should still be able to recoup most of what you spent on the secondary market if you decide to sell
Also loving my gold top DGT SE. Everything about it is fantastic, however, it seems to go more out of tune than my other guitars even without using the whammy bar.
Yeah unfortunately the locking tuners from the core model didn't make it to the SE. It's either your tuners or your nut, both can be replaced/recut to fix your problem
@@gdawgs101 I purchased the PRS locking tuners and haven't installed them yet so will try that first to see if that helps; if not, then the nut. Still, I absolutely love this guitar. Thanks!
PRS really step up their games with the SE line lately, great Guitar. However, Can we see you try an ESP/LTD Guitars? Ibanez RG standard perhaps... or maybe reviewing pickups like the Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz in a 24 fret guitars and make a custom preset from there...
There are better guitars if you throw $ 5000 plus at the problem but if you are a normal person with a mortgage and mouths to feed I think the quality and sound is impossible to beat at the price point.
I got the Dgt SE and the Semi hollow CE24 USA made. The DGT SE will go back, you can say whatever you want but there is a huge difference in quality, and feel. the main issue I have with the DGT vs the CE 24 are the inconsistent balance of the strings on the DGT you can hear it without amplification, may be it’s just my model here, but I had the same thing with my Silversky SE. Which I sold cause of this, my hollowbody 2 has not this issue at all , that’s the only SE which I kept, so I’m a bit disappointed about the DGT SE. May be I’m buying another batch of the SE DGT later this year, cause i liked the neck pickup a lot that nice kinda lespaul vinatge tone, without the flaws playing a Gibson guitar. But hey, it’s a great time we’re living in, these guitars are in general really good but as I’ve said compared to the US made models there is a huge difference, at least with mine here. Keep it up mate, your content is golden! Cheers
I think it's such a shame people always feel like they are having to qualify or even apologise for liking a PRS or their PRS. Clearly great guitars, clearly have a certain 'something' when you find 'the one'. Even this video sounded like you were apologising or over justifying liking it as much as you do.
I really don't like the PRS fat necks but i'm on the verge of making an exception for the DGT. I hope they release a single cut version of this guitar someday. Then it would be irresistible. Your opening jams are always amazing but this one is something else. I watched it 3 times already 🙂
Like riding in a car with someone that constantly taps the brakes. Must be fun for the driver, but uncomfortable for the rider. Just too many notes strung together without space.
I like your reviews but your passionate love for gear, be the prs, a modeller, a real amp or whatever and all of a sudden falling out with them is driving me crazy. Make up your mind or do you want us all to go bankrupt? :)
I have the SE DGT Gold Top. After a couple of months owning it, I sold my Les Paul Standard. Didn't see any need to hang on to the Gibson, now that I have the PRS. Absolutely love it.

Just want to say how much I appreciate you… the playing part especially. I transcribed one of your lines on vacation
I have a gold top DGT SE. It's fantastic! It looks really good. With the dots people don't realize it's a PRS right away
Still loving mine two months in, more than I expected for sure as someone who was previously a PRS sceptic to say the least.
Glad the SE isn't carved myself as not a fan of it so doubly happy.
Personally I find the "violin carve" a bit uncomfortable; I actually prefer the SE "bevel".
I have the DGT SE goldtop and it's mojo is that it makes me walk by my Les Paul- and play the DGT for hours, like that's all I want to do.

My SE DGT gold top covers a lot of sonic space for me. Between Se DGT and my PRS Se Hollowbody, I've been able to thin the herd quite a bit.

I had a Custom 22 Semi Hollow SE come up for sale at a great price 100km away... I went and got it, no regrets at all... Still loving it!
I found one used for $600. OMG! Over my les Paul, over my Strat Pro ii. It sounds incredible and feels so right. What a world!

These come with a treble bleed on both volume pots.
I have a DGT SE Gold Top, and I also have a Core 2013 Pauls Guitar. Both are fantastic guitars.
As usual some tasteful playing ;) One note: it comes with 10s from the factory (PRS Classic, .010-.046). I have not measured them but they do feel stiffer than 9s on my other PRS (same scale length)
Yep10 s is How they come actually
Definitely enjoy my S2's and student edition Santana (it's actually fun to battle with the pickups... magnet changes before I change them out) If I was forced to sell something, they would go Loooong before my Les Paul's. Long before.
I find myself picking up the DGT SE more than any of my other guitars. honestly an amazing instrument for the price. One issue I have is with the tremolo arm, it is much looser than I was hoping it would be
The SE comes with 10’s, the core comes with 11’s. Really nice guitar
The Gold top DGT SE is always tempting.
Wow you’re playing is beautiful .. I have the same guitar and love it
I love mine. It does stratty sounds, does Les Paul sounds, does blues, metal, pop, jazz etc. If it could do tele sounds it'd be my only guitar.
But you won't get the high-end DGT for $1000. 🙂
@@Straydogger true. But there are other makes and models that you can
I got a good deal on a used core last year, and then when this came out I grabbed a gold top, expecting to send it back. I like the SE better than the core in some ways. Selling the core.
I love those legato triplets you play, very smooth!
Been wanting this for years, on the journey to save some dough and get it brand new.
You are my favorite guitarist.
Must have a treble bleed wired in the circuit. It’s the only way you can roll the volume down without losing top end.
I’m gearing up to get one.
Mate! Such great playing!
Ye-. The knobs look great.
I was watching Incubus live on UA-cam last night, he used to play PRS and he was pretty much sticking to a Tele, I was kinda surprised how good it sounded
Unfortunately I have had to replace the jack and the switch in mine but I do love the guitar.
My 17yo son suddenly decided to learn to play guitar… and has taken my SE DGT, so no “Honeymoon” period for me either! Oedipus!
interesting thing to note, the single coil split on the DGT SE does seem to go to the inner coils, at least that's what tapping it with a screwdriver seems to indicate.
The SE DGT split is closer to a 75/25 split instead of a 50/50 because that is the way David Grissom likes it. As do I. 🙂
I have the Gold Top SE and it is a very solid guitar. I wish I could play it better :)
Hi John, great that you still like your DGT after the honeymoon. Maybe you can even consider to try playing it without protection foil of the humbuckers now 😉? Who knows, maybe different...
It was hard to fight the temptation to pull the plastic off the pickups when I had it!
Enjoy !
When you say "swapped volume controls", do you mean you just swapped which knob controls which pickup?
@@gdawgs101 I think @cliverkay physically swapped the 2 pots around in order to not have to resolder things 😉 On the DGT, the front volume pot controls the back pickup (and vice versa). Works for David, but I'd personally hate it.
hey John, i just bought your helix preset pack and I'm wondering which preset were you using for the intro section of the video?
Thanks!
Awesome intro track!
I love your melodies- very original. What loop station do you use? Also where do you get your drum sounds?
Still would love to see you demo a CE24 if the chance ever comes up.
My only complaint with the dgt is that i would like to have the bound fretboard. Ive got it on my 245 and my 594 and i think it just looks more upscale and feels more premium.
Looks ain't everything. 🙂
Great review love your playing loafs of feel the guitar sounds like a old les Paul beautiful musical instrument very articulate I’m getting one soon want the cold top classic look 😂😂😂😂could us that guitar at any level of playing to
It would be nice to have more finish options not really into either option
Helix or FM9? Your tone is killing it! Love the BT
You could achieve this tone on any of the flagship modelers
Probably the Gorilla amp.
Sounds great backed off on the volume. I have a McCarty S2 that does not sound good with the volume backed off at all. Goes straight to mud.
For the price, this thing is hard to beat.
I would suggest looking for something used if you don’t want to spend 4K on a core model.
Almost pulled the trigger on a red single cut for 1600. My wife must be happy I didn’t tho 😂
What are the knobs you've put on your SE DGT....? I want to swap mine. Also what delay do you use...?
Do you have a link for the knobs?
Hey JNC do you keep the term floating or did you deck it?
This one is floating
I think a lot of people are selling the SE to get the core model.
I wanted a PRS so badly. Then I finally bought one. I loved the quality of workmanship. However, there was nothing about the sound that made me love it. I returned it. Just wasn’t for me.
What model was It
I got a Gold top DGT SE last fall.
Sounds like you just bought a lemon unfortunately. I would have taken it back and swapped it out for another one back in the fall if I were you
@@gdawgs101 Indeed, sadly, I couldn't fully tell all of the issues when I first got it. They came to life slowly the more I played it. Live and learn.
@@michaelclarkphoto Unfortunate. Good news is, because it's a PRS, you should still be able to recoup most of what you spent on the secondary market if you decide to sell
I bought one new for $550. Great guitar that you can snag for 600 or less
Thanks!
Big fan of mine
PRS really step up their games with the SE line lately, great Guitar.
However, Can we see you try an ESP/LTD Guitars? Ibanez RG standard perhaps... or maybe reviewing pickups like the Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz in a 24 fret guitars and make a custom preset from there...
JNC only plays Fender or Gibson or guitars trying to look like Fenders/Gibsons. Never going to see him with an ESP
Imagine a UK G3 with him Guthrie and Jack Gardiner

Cheers
Ses snd killer.
I think it's such a shame people always feel like they are having to qualify or even apologise for liking a PRS or their PRS. Clearly great guitars, clearly have a certain 'something' when you find 'the one'. Even this video sounded like you were apologising or over justifying liking it as much as you do.
Is it me or you are a bit underwhelmed after playing a Core model for a month?
No it comes with 10's from the line
