PRS should make a CE 22 with the same neck, maybe even a hardtail.
I agree! I’m not a huge fan of the 24, it sounds too thin/bright for me, but the 22 sounds more like a traditional humbucking guitar such as a Les Paul. So that would be what I would prefer.
I’d like to see a McCarty with that neck
As Phil McKnight says, if the reviewer's guitar is super awesome but then you get one that's terrible, tell them. Because they're then setting the expectation that the model is awesome.
I don't own one, but I did sample one at sweetwater a while ago (well the flame verneer version) and it was really pretty sweet. If I didn't already own a US CE24 I'd seriously consider buying one.
The thing that brought me to this channel was I've never heard someone blend the smooth Eric Johnson and John Mayer styles together so well and then mix in licks from all the jazz masters, but what keeps me coming back is not just that but the guitar and gear reviews, and the solid tidbits of knowledge for improving.
It's a beauty. Got mine 2 weeks ago, same color. Older beginner, I think it is a well built, pretty guitar.
The ink dyed finish looks great. It should have been a hard tail though.
You make everything sound good. I like the satin finish.
Sounds f'kn great to me at the gig!!😌The guitar and especially your playing!
I really like my DGT's split sound too.
5:10 That is as great a compliment for the split sounds as you can give. To play hours of music on the split sound and be happy is something I've never done with any split coil sound.
Are they generally not as good as dedicated single coils?
@@emelle1283 typically players who enjoy single coils will say that split hums just "don't sound like singles" and rather are just a thinner sounding pickup with some more top end. Which doesn't mean they're bad, they're just often not the cup of tea of single coil players.
@@emelle1283no BUT I detach from it supposedly replicating a single coil and I just like the split coil for a cleaner sound for rhythm or clean lead and then hit humbucker mode for extra oomph. I have strats if I really want single coil but love the split for a different reason.
@@stevedarby1099 how about p90s?
@@emelle1283 I have a Revstar with p90s and I love the sound, very rich and warm. Yes a bit of hum but I just turn it down a fraction. A key guitar in my armoury, brilliant for ethereal softer stuff. So many option for getting both in one guitar though. I also have a epiphone les Paul custom pro and that also splits the coils so can be clear and glassy and then pop the switch to give humbucker power. My ultimate is a strat HSS, covers all bases true single coil and humbucker. The PRS is great though. I think you need a day down the guitar store to have a go on them all 😀 this is why we end up having so many guitars 😂😂
Glad you included the gig video John ... what a great solo!
Stumbled upon your channel and it's nice to find someone my side of the ocean making this sort of content. I've recently picked up electric guitar at a ripe age of 35 and find your content really refreshing. Grabbed myself a Tremonti SE, I'm in love with it! Subbed!
Thank sir! Very good video. I think this pushes me towards my purchase. Cheers Mate
We all know that that head wound was suffered in the pit.
Perhaps I also suffered a head injury in that same pit, because every time I see this guitar, I can’t help but leave comment that pickup covers would absolutely transform the appearance of this guitar. And I’m not even a pickup-covers-kind-of-guy.
yep.
To me John that guitar seems to marry both worlds. Great single coil high end, but warm humbuckers.
Samash was tempting me with one of these for a 15% discount. I was shocked they were in stock. But I caved and ordered a gold top Sire L7... Sigh, I can't stop ordering new guitars. Lol
I’ve never had that problem (I’m broke).
424.99 for that axe is a steal! is that still going on?
I just got a FGN Gold Top Les Paul with Fralin p90s - MINT CONDITION - for USD $610 !!! Can't believe it!
@@VictorVectorMusic oh man, it's even cheaper right now. Look at the home page for a 15% code. Today it's "BRK" and the guitar is $475. After using the code it's $402.94
@@VictorVectorMusic My comments keep getting deleted. But Yes
I'd love to have one. I have a 2014 se and it's probably the best playing guitar compared to my Les Paul tribute (killer pickups), and a tele player series. All are great but the prs is the easiest to play. I did replace the push pull with a standard tone and put a better cap in it and it really brought the pickups to life.
SMOKIN J Cordy! Want to play like you when I grow up (52) 🙂
You can pay a bit more if you want a glossy, flamed top, which I think is great. I have been considering one.
Just bought the shiny version - love it. Split coil sounds great to me, but the HBs are also really nice The two main criticisms you make seem like things ppl wld get used to if they played it a lot. Not a problem for me. And the build quality is excellent.
man you sounded great at that gig. your a great player. I think this line of PRS Guitars are amazing value but for the love of god get locking tuners ready! I've said for a while they just need to make ONE line of locking tuners for all their guitars. I think they are essential in 2024.
Played it in the same color at GC yesterday. Ended up buying a Schecter C-1 but I actually still want one of these.
I bought the brown one. I love it.
I have a PRS Custom and agree that the pickup switch is in the wrong place. Otherwise, no complaints. In fact it’s amazing.
Great guitar for the money. I really like the SE Swamp Ash Special as a great value guitar as well. I still prefer the Modern Eagle V and the semi-hollow Special more, but those are also 4x the price. So the SE’s are really good for the price.
What were you using on the live gig, helix? What amp or just pa direct, great sound in the mix
I’ve had two 24 feet guitars and fell out of love with them for the reason you mentioned. I’d been so long on 21/2 fret guitars and I couldn’t make the adjustment. Both amazing but in the end…
That said, £500 and I think I’d manage!
The CE is my favorite, might grab one of the se versions as a backup
They do feel a bit different, mainly neck profile. That said it does a pretty decent job capturing the general mojo of the guitar it's modeled after.
We've had a couple of these come through the store and they are amazing at this price point.
Has the quality been decent?
@@jbh219 yup - all the cost saving here has come from dropping the bling, not from playability and tone. Also, side-note, these will make a GREAT mod platform to try different pickups, etc. PRS nailed it on this one.
In the face of QA issues at Fender and Gibson, PRS are being really smart to my mind
@@jbh219 indeed - there were some isolated QC issues coming out of the pandemic (pretty common across all our suppliers), but they definitely seem to be back to consistency now - we really don’t have to do much to new PRS guitars before putting them on the wall, except to check tuning. At each of their price tiers (SE, S2, Core, Private Stock), it’s hard to beat PRS. And with this SE CE24, they have the budget entry point just right.
same issue for me with the switcher placement and it tricks my mind as it’s sideways instead of vertical like an LP. took me a while but I’m good with it now. Pickups can be little harsh on the top end when tone/vol wide open that a little rolloff can fix. overall good value
Could loosen it and turn it so that it works like a Gibson.
@@Dreyno thought about that but I’m used to it now so all good.
For me, I don't quite care. If I wanted every guitar to be exactly the same, I'd have only gotten 3 of the exact same one.
My 2009 DGT made me a PRS fan. The most versatile guitar I own for playing covers. Plays great, sounds great, looks great. What more do you need?
This guitar suits your playing style, really. ALSO, will you be using time stamps on your videos anytime soon ? 😉
Check out Bacchus (high end) open pore designs - radical!
personally, i wish prs offered more hardtail versions with dot inlays. I own a new SE Custom 24 & very much wish I could get that SAME guitar in a hardtail w/dot inlays.
Do you have any recordings of music you wrote? Really love your jamming on these videos
Having just recently bought a Soloking MT1 and MS1 from Andertons, I'd be interested to see a review from you on these, as a guitar even cheaper than the PRS and, at least on paper, better spec'd
I had the gold HSS one it looked great and well spec'd with a lovely smooth neck but for me only issue was the body weight and big block trem so it got returned otherwise fantastic imo!
Saw two of these brand new already discounted to $396 and a se dgt down to $500. Prs se’s may have over saturated.
I'm of the belief, that if I set up one of the new Amazon Squires that they just came out with for around $119. With good strings and a Roland Cube, Mr. Cordy could pull off quite a ruckus with it, very easily. Does that make me want an Amazon Squire? No, no it doesn't.
His playing has evolved quite nicely just over the last couple months I've noticed. Less endless noodling and an effort to simplify and condense most playing spots. Less is always more, if you convey the same message effectively. The kid is get'n hot. Maybe the key to life is efficiency, not who can play the most notes the fastest. Keef seems to think so.
Seems like a perfect guitar for playing out, home use, guitar night at a friend’s house outside on the deck. I’d (and probably will) buy a hard shell case (from Gator Cases here in my hometown of Tampa, FL, of course) and just play the heck out it. I think I’ll head over to the guitar store and try one out. Only downside is I try not to buy guitars that aren’t made here in my good old USA as I prefer to support workers here, but might make an exception and hope Paul hires some more people here with some of the profits.
I recently did a tour of the factory and they said they have a little over 500 working there. He has no problem hiring people, they just can't make a $500 guitar and pay US wages. They must pay OK too, because lots of people have been there for 10 years or more.
@@Scott__C That’s what I’m talking about! That’s 500 people with (hopefully) a good full-time job with some benefits making an excellent project that people want. And they are jobs a person can learn and progress in for decades until retirement. If the imports help support that or help develop a market for their US projects then it must be working. Kudos to Paul, his American dream is making others’ lives better.
@@philipmarsh3522 They do have people doing QC on them on one floor in the factory.
Random, but I was wondering: what do you think of noiseless "single coil" pickups? Any experience with such designs?
What preset was the live gig clip? It could be the best sound I've ever heard.
Also interested, since I have his presets packs.
Yea please tell us
I know it’s not easy in the beginning but just keep practicing. You’re going to get someday, I promise. 😂 seriously you could make a 3 string Mickey Mouse guitar sound good.
I've likened my Reverend BC-1 to a PRS CE24 SE. Can you get your hands on a Reverend for review?
I’ve been really happy with my SE CE24. My only complaint is that I’d like to buy another of the same guitar (or the SE CE24 Standard) with a hardtail. Yeah, they’ve got other hardtail guitars. And, yeah, I could block the vibrato. I’m sure I will do one of those things. But why not just have these same models in hardtail? I’m not much of a fan of the birds, but I’m fine with them.
Man there are sooooo many great PRS SE guitars right now but the birds… the damn birds.
Would love to see you review the PRS Se Swamp Ash special since that seems to be a very “strat like” guitar.
I agree that it seems like it would be, but in my opinion it's not. I've played them at gc. The alternate positions (non humbucker) have the pickups all combining with each other in different ways. There is no true single coil setting. It didn't sound very stratty to me. It's kind of it's own thing imo.
It’s a brighter tone than most PRSs, but it’s not as bright as a typical Strat,
@@dcamnc1 Don’t you have to pull out the tone knob to get the single coil sounds?
@@tonedowne You do, but they aren't true single coil sounds; combinations of hum & tapped neck hum mixed with the middle single. They are good sounds, just not very stratty.
@@dcamnc1 thanks, I was asking because all of the videos I've heard, it sounds super bright especially for humbuckers. I'm kind of torn between the DGT and the Swamp ash. Seems like they both have a big tonal palette. Unfortunately I'm living abroad at the moment and can't try them out anywhere before buying.
John, do you prefer the dgt over this? Thanks. Excellent video!!
Curious about this 2
Me three!
Mate, what amp cab EQ and OD settings do you use for the gig clips? Love the smooth lead tone. Turned down tone knob?
Is the neck just like the Custom 24 bc I want to like the wide thin in fact I like the thin front to back but find the wide part or fretboard width to be too wide bc my current favorite Aria Pro2 jet1 neck and my Ltd ec1000 necks feel much easier to make power chords with ring and fore fingers vs having to add the pinky for me anyway.
For the money... this PRS or Sire S7 or new Pacifica?
would you care for some cheese with your whine ! i have the prs 24-08 and it is truly amazing to play .
I’ve played 22 frets my entire life…when I play 24, it messes me up in the high register…so I guess that is a thing for some people!!
So many complaints about certain aspects of the guitar just floor me. If you don't like the finish, inlays, headstock shape, the switching or whatever it is, change it or buy something else. Complaining about a guitar's design is pointless when so many brands exist is just silly. I don't work for PRS, I'm not a PRS Artist and I only have one PRS guitar. No guitar is perfect, but there are enough brands to choose from, you should be able to find one that makes you happy. Music is art and guitars are a paintbrush in that sense, it's the end result that matters, not the tool.
Agree totally.
Reviewing guitar build quality keeps people in a job. Musos need it 😉
I gigged a PRS SE last night. The core had a night off. Does anyone think the audience noticed?
Of course not.
@@Scott__C Agreed. The core is for me but the audience don't care which I play
The live recording didn't have that keyboardy tone. What was different?
What are cordless system are you using?
Boys, i am looking for ear protection. What exact product would you recommend for a decent proce? Thx
Always depends on what you want. If you spend more, they'll basically just be turning everything down, cheaper will be more muffled on the high end. I've used Earasers, they're about $40 on Amazon and are pretty good.
What wireless do you use live?
Nice to hear the SE CE 24 Satin gigged. I've had the cherry red one for over 2mos now. Mine weighs 7.2lbs which I don't consider "super light" but then again I'm not a youngster. I really like the guitar...and agree, it can get knocked a little out of tune in its gig bag. For me it's always the "G". They do come strung with 9's and that works for me. Overall I'm so glad PRS made a guitar that's more affordable for the masses ! As primarily a strat player, I can see where it might take getting used to. You made it sound like a million bucks John ! p.s....did you find that one know had less resistance than the other ? My tone knob has little to no resistance...turns sooo easily...maybe too easily whereas the volume feels more like the rest of my guitars. Just curious.
My red satin CE 24 is the same, tone has less resistance than volume. I wondered also until I saw it mentioned in at least one other review so I think that's just how the tone/split pot is.
@@JonOrchard as long as it works right ? I called PRS and spoke with a tech guy...after a long dissertation about the pots Paul uses, as long as it works not to worry...if there are any issues let them know.
Hi :)
There was one point, which really caught my attention "if I was running a guitar company, I probably would make sure that guitars that goes out for people to review weren't crap".
And that is exactly, what I think is really happening...only those in reviews aren't crap.
In the past I owned 2 PRS SEs, but Korean ones and those were superb for the money.
Nowdays anytime I pickup any PRS SE in the local store, those are definitelly crap. Frets sticking out, necks bent so badly that strings were 5-10mm away from frets, tuners felt like made of tin and overall the sounds was really really uninspiring - so I assume the wood is very quickly dried out, therefore not only there are problems mentiones earlier, but also is sounds really dull.
I wouldn't buy PRS SE in this day and age...
Additional question: don't you have problem with satin finish that it polishes out below the strings, where your right/picking hand little finger (and maybe also sometimes ring and middle) touches the wood?
I just bought the SE DGT. First one I received was the worst guitar I’ve ever had. Fretwork was a joke. Chunks missing out of the fretboard near the fret ends from poor filing work, etc, etc.. Second I received is brilliant. I think the QC consistency on the Korean models was better. But the Indonesians can make a great guitar when they want. Sending out perfect examples to reviewers on UA-cam and the gear mags is something all the companies will do. I take these reviews with a grain of salt. That said, I find JNC to be refreshingly honest and fair. And a great player too!
I’d like to see a single cut
Custom 24 ce
I can't help but feel in your last couple of videos that maybe you have been listening to more Eric Johnson lately. Just a guess
Almost all PRS guitars have that problem with the location of the pickup selector, IMO. If you have the trem bar in and hanging straight down (as it tends to), you have to “jump” over it to get to the pickup switch. Tough to do during a solo on the fly.
PRS tremolo systems just never quite stay in tune. I’ve owned about ten of them, mostly USA versions and I’m not a fan of that system.
If you block them they are great guitars.
Also I agree about the placement of the pickup switch. PRS just has always been slightly off on control placements for me personally.
Hmm and on the flip side my US CE24 has been the most stable guitar on the wall.
I think typically that's either a nut issue or one of the 6 screws isn't lined up properly. If someone's adjusted it, they're tough to get just right. But great when they are.
I hear people say that. Just hasn’t been my experience. I wish though because I do like their instruments.
Yeah I’ve done every adjustment possible including adding roller nuts, bone nuts, etc. It’s not that they go dramatically out of tune in my experience.
They are fine with light tremolo work, but then you bend a g or a b string and they go slightly flat until you wiggle the tremolo again. Just very annoying even though it’s a slight change in pitch.
same, blocked the trem on U.S CE. love the pups and neck.
Will the coil split produce a single coil hum?
PRS SE = Cort
Colors are a bit odd. Would have preferred nicer colors and 22 frets. So have to pay more....
It's unfair. SE series known to be called "student edition" because it's budget aka cheap. But you compare it with Yamaha Pacifica twice more expensive in different price category. It's like criticising some budget Chinese noname android in front of iPhone Pro. You have to compare it at least with mid-range of Gretsches or Epiphones.
for me , thats the limit , i am not going to spend more the 500 euro on a guitar , and in these days you can buy a good guitar for that kinda off money ,
I understand that, and you are right there are some great guitars out there for around 500. This one being one of them I think based on my test play of one. That said though I also have a Core Custom 24... I did not buy it new because um yeah that's a lot of cash. That said it's a 2017 and there is not another guitar in my stable that plays as good. Some are close and but yeah. Is it worth the extra money... probably not as none of my guitars are lacking, but you can feel it is a step above. I'd love to say a $500-850 SE is just as good, and they are great guitars, but dangit, there is a difference.
@@shawnmcginnis2508 yes , i know , i have had some top guitargear myself when i was younger , but for the thing i do with hobby at the monent , this kinda level guitar does the trick for me , so yeah , why spend more ? Cheers .
@antoonhermans8953 not a single reason too 🙂. At the end of the day if you can make music on it and it brings a smile to your face, what more can ya ask for?!
Yeah….PRS junk.
You apparently didn't have enough time to actually watch the video before you shared your hard-hitting insights with us.
😂😂😂
@@garrickhanson what video?….there’s a video?
Dude I have several old Korean SE's from 2003-2011 some purchased new and honestly they are great.
Yes there are diamonds in the rough, but since I have 3 core models/ a gold top DGT a 10 top 594 and the most beautiful flame maple neck and fretboard Custom Soapbar with fralins, I do not really last with s2’s have had a few and SE’s
Those birds . . . ugh . . .
Same. Just look a mess.
No worse than some others out there.
It’s $200 cheaper than the LTD Viper which I was looking at. Unparalleled quality at probably 1/4 or 1/3 the price of an epiphone? No brainer to get this guitar and the birds are awesome.
Youngboy better.
Spell reggin backwards. I queef better music than this.
