    The minor pentatonic scale is an invaluable tool that all guitar players should learn and master.
    However, it is not without it's pitfalls, ESPECIALLY for aspiring blues guitarists who often find themselves stuck in pentatonic prison, with no end in sight...
    In this free blues guitar lesson, I'll be explaining exactly why I think that the exclusively minor-pentatonic-based soloing approach that many blues guitar players take, is leaving them unable to play solos that highlight the chord changes in the way that the likes of Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, Matt Schofield and Josh Smith seem to do, effortlessly...
    --

    The Minor Pentatonic will always be an invaluable asset to guitar playing in virtually any context, but it should never be the apex of learning guitar. Learning more theory and how it corresponds with the guitar has absolutely been fun and has made creativity so much more possible. Cheers as always Ross.

    This book really is a game changer. I took Ross’s advice and have been practicing the material in this book over and over for a number of months (since the book first came out). That has really paid off. Finally got to the point where I can solo over the entire 12 bar blues mixing and matching licks using the vocabulary from the book. Thank you so much Ross! Keep up the great work :) In the future, I think it would be cool if you did a similar book, but focusing on playing the changes over a minor blues.

    Ross Love your playing and your philosophy beyond pentatonic. I am tempted to buy your book as it pinpoints exactly where I need to make progress. I have one major reservation. I would much prefer a ring back binding allowing for easy placement on a music stand.
    I bought one of Justin Sandercoe’s early publications with a paperback binding and it was useless. I note that he later changed to a ring back binding.
    So for now I will postpone buying what looks to be an excellent book until such time as it may be produced in my preferred ring back binding format.
    Best wishes for a big success with your book.
    Graham

    Once I stopped being lazy and learned all shapes of major as well as minor pentatonics, and learned tricks to combine the 2, it was a game changer to playing more melodically and more interestingly.

    Hi Ross, I just received your book and will be getting in to it soon. I did watch the masterclass and have been studying these concepts now for a few weeks. I have been testing in key of A using the blues scale with the Major 3rd added for the 1 Chord then for the 4 Chord, I’m using an A Dorian scale then for the 5 Chord I move to a B Dorian scale and that seems to work well for me hitting all the chord tones for the 4 and 5 chords. What are your thoughts on that?

    • @RossCampbellGuitarist
      @RossCampbellGuitarist  Рік тому +1

      Hey Clay! I understand completely why you'd feel inclined to take that approach however I would say that it's not optimal. Why? Well, you're playing over a D7 chord but thinking of the root note A if you're visualising A Dorian, which makes it more likely for you to bias your note choices relative to a root note that isn't the same of the chord that you're playing over. Same thing applies to B Dorian over E7 - it's better to be visualising E root note than B root notes. I think as you progress through the book it will become easier for you to shed this approach and adopt one that's more optimal for hitting those money notes for the IV and V chords :)

  • @waynegram8907
    @waynegram8907 Рік тому

    ROSS, try to make a lessons on when SRV used the mixolydian scale and when SRV used Jazz chords and SRV use modes. I have seen SRV use the mixolydian scale for minor pentatonic box#5 which is the G shape CAGED, instead of playing minor pentatonic box#5 he uses the Mixolydian Arpeggio scale ( not the scale) the mixolydian arpeggio scale/mixolydian pentatonic scale 1-3-5-b7 or 1-3-4-5-7b. Instead of mixing minor pentatonic with major pentatonic what SRV does is play a minor pentatonic phrase then answers it with a mixolydian arpeggio scale using the same ROOT note. He does this in Tin Pan Alley using sweeps in his live concerts sweeping back a forth from minor pentatonic to mixloydian arpeggio scales using the G shape or C shape CAGED. The Trick is you find the root note lets say E so you find all your E notes mapping on the fretboard but you can use either E minor pentatonic then jump to another E note at another position on the fretboard you can either outline the C chape CAGED or G shape CAGED and use the E mixolydian arpeggio scale. He does this really fast by sweeping through the box positions. So what I'm saying is the G shape mixolydian arpeggio scale is BEHIND minor pentatonic box#1 and C shape Mixolydian arpeggio scale is AHEAD of the minor pentatonic box#1 you just have to find the ROOT NOTES and you sweep fast BEHIND and AHEAD of the minor penatonic box#1. Its a Tin Pan Alley trick he learned from BB king how to use the mixolydian mode from playing it behind and ahead of the minor pentatonic box#1.

    I'll fight this until I push up daisies. This is a false conception. If you play the relative minor you get the major 3rd.. Most people don't analyze the Pentatonic to its full capability. IMO

    • @RossCampbellGuitarist
      @RossCampbellGuitarist  Рік тому

      You must mean relative major. True there is a major 3rd in the major pentatonic but you can still wind up stuck in major pentatonic boxes and struggle to highlight the changes.
