Triads are the topic of today’s video. This is something that ALL intermediate guitar players should learn in their journey from an intermediate to advanced level of guitar playing. Why? Because not only are triads an incredibly useful tool for lead playing, they are equally useful for making your RHYTHM playing sound so much more interesting!
In this lesson, I explain to you what a ‘1st inversion major triad’ is and how you can combine it with major barre chords to get a bit more creative with your rhythm playing and add a bit of life to basic chord progressions.
I do this by taking you through the first four bars of a rhythm playing etude I composed recently. This etude was inspired by the opening to the Hendrix classic ‘Bold as Love’ and shares the same four chords played in the intro of that song.
These first four bars should act as a nice introduction to combining major barre chords with triad shapes for those of you who are new to the concept of triads.
If you enjoyed learning the first four bars and would like to learn the etude in full with downloadable TAB files and a video breakdown, you can find exactly that in the EXTRAS section of my instructional website - bulletproofguitarplayer.com/c...
In addition to a breakdown of the etude, I have created 6 BONUS exercises for practicing the combination of major barre chords and 1st inversion major triads.
These exercises will be helpful to those of you who might not feel technically ready to learn the entire etude and would perhaps benefit from practicing some easier exercises to begin with.
Subscribing to bulletproofguitarplayer.com gives you full access to ALL SITE CONTENT, including Parts 1 & 2 of my original Bulletproof Guitar Player courses.
If your knowledge of fundamental music theory is lacking, or you’re a COMPLETE beginner when it comes to theory, you will absolutely benefit from studying the material found in Part 1 - Master the Fretboard. Triads - and many other concepts - are covered in much more depth in that course and you will learn how and when to use them in your lead and rhythm playing.

Now these are the types of lessons I like. I much prefer it when the instructor is speaking of chord names, inversions, intervals, etc so it can be applied in various places on the fretboard as opposed to the teachers who just tell you what fret and string to place your fingers on. You just earned yourself a new subscriber to your channel. Will have to check out your website as well.
Thanks Andrew!
I prefer to pick up a few licks instead of the yaptty yap yap. If I want to learn technicalities, I will join a classical guitar school. You can best believe Hendrix didn't care about yapty yap.
Inspired by Bold As Love ... and Electric Gypsy by Andy Timmons. Sounded great!
Ross, what a great etude! This made me sign up for your course. Thank you for the inspiration!
Kudos!
Very cool! Thank you!
Fresh set of strings on a shiny black Tele’. Yes please.

Excellent tip!
Thanks, Ross! Just got onto your channel and found your teaching style really informative and easy to follow. Subscribed, mate!
Wonderful, thanks
Excellent lesson!
Good lesson, you explain the concepts and use the fretboard diagrams very effectively.
Congratulations on a great and useful lesson. Been using this Hendrixian Techniques for a while, you really did an awesome job describing the technique. Very useful.
Superb lesson, brilliantly explained and performed. Loved it cheers
You did a similar video to this a couple of years ago. I’ve watched it loads of times and it really helped my playing and got me back to into hendrix and the rhcp. So i will enjoy working my way through this and picking up some ideas. Thanks again! 🙂
Great lesson and love that Player Series Tele! I love mine.
Hello Ross, many thanks for this super clear lesson on this rhythm chops! Best wishes from Amsterdam
Perfect🙏🏼
This lesson ties together so much of the triads and double-stops from the rhythm guitarists I love best . . . really making me play better. Thank you sir!
Excellent lesson hats 🎩 off to you sir
thank you
really good lesson easy to understand and follow and i got instant rewards too. Thank you.
Love the sleeve and tree, guiring is cool as well😉🤣🤘
Thanks Brother. You have increased my knowledge.
You're a great communicator mi amigo. Well done. Best lesson I've seen in awhile.
Thank you.
Love it. This is what I looking for. Running to your website to learn the whole things haha.
Great instructional video. I’ve been looking for ways to take my playing to the next level (whatever that means..!). This is entirely the kind of concept that can expand playing to a huge degree without over complicating things. Another new subscriber. Thanks.
❤ i love this guy lesson
Bad ass lesson! Thanks Ross
Awesome video. Just happen to pick up that same guitar yesterday
Bellissimo video. Bravo
Thank you, Ross. This is the type of content that made me subscribe in the first place. It is immediately accessible and understandable to a hack like me, and something we can all put into practice right now, regardless of skill level. But you include enough music theory and nomenclature to keep us all honest, and stretch those of us with less exposure to the more technical side.
Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us. I love listening to you play, it is inspiring.
😲 that tele and tone is beautiful. I have that guitar in strat form lol
yes it all helps. as a beginner it gives ideas, confidence , and a belief . many thanks . kent uk
Amazing, each lesson is a banger. Best on the tube 🤘🏼
Thank you!
That's very crunchy. I like it!
This is very eye opening, thank you for doing this!
Glad to hear that. Thanks!
u sir are one of d best person and a guitar player
Damn, nice and accessable tutorial. Thank you man.
love your videos!! especially about rhythm🤘😁
Thank you!
Ross, thanks for this. I have learned major and minor triads up and down the neck on all stringsets but as yet have only very limited ways of using them musically, particularly on the lower strings. So, this was very useful. Cheers.
Beautiful etude and great lesson; many thanks for posting.
Thanks Steve!
Lots of Andy Timons power in that intro!! Great video!!
That's all I could hear!
Interesting! I've heard Electric Gypsy but not much else. Perhaps I should start listening to him more
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Yes, please check out Andy . . . Theme From A Perfect World (2016) is one powerful album, with "Ascension" as the lead track. His ability to craft melodic chord solos blows my mind every time . . . I think you'd like him for sure. TC
@@TomCPlus1 I will check that out. Thanks for the recommendation
@@RossCampbellGuitarist that bit from about 18-28 seconds is definitely inspired by electric gypsy, conscious or not. But yes, Timmons is an absolute beast. Imo, the best tone I've ever heard.
great lesson Ross and well explained. Thanks!
Thanks Isaac!
Awesome play ❣👍
Just having a Sunday coffee chilling out with your triad lesson. Wonderful content and your own style and flavour is a bonus. Thanks a lot.
That makes me happy to hear. Thank you!
Fantastic stuff mate! Saving this for later when I have my guitar🎸
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing, this was an important one I think well for me anyways as it opens so much up cheers
Thank you!
The final part was just brilliant :)
Great lesson man! Unlocking Hendrix is cool, even though it's not my style, I like to play a couple of his songs when I practice.
Incredible Ross. I really loved this, and a ton of other videos from your channel (I just don’t make a habit of commenting). You make everything sound great.
Thank you!
Damn! You are phenomenal!
Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks David!
wow. this lesson was awesome. thank you so much. I really admire the flow of hendrix and john but i always struggled making sense of "connecting" their chords in their manner until now. thank you
Excellent. Thank you.
Thanks Vic!
Thanks for the fantastic lesson Ross. From my perspective, it's actually quite important to play the A chord with the thumb for the root (Jimi style) because it really makes it possible to go smoothly into the triad and hammer on part. I only learned how to use my thumb like that relatively recently and it's really helped make this kind of thing sound smooth. When I play a bar chord for the A, it just sounds like a stutter when changing.
Love that tone Ross! Great lesson as always. Cheers
Thank you Lucas!
'LIKE' for the intro bro. Inspiring. :)
One my biggest Achilles heel as far breadth of variety for my ongoing learning. I’m 60…been playing since 17. Years on the road with cover bands and I’m still hungry for learning. I’m planning on taking your course soon. Looking forward to it!
Thumb Up for this lesson Ross!
Thanks!
Great lesson brother, and congrats for what you played...really enjoyed it. Thanks from Portugal
Thank you!
Really like that reverb
So good. Thanks for sharing this short lesson for free. I understand that it is promotional material. Hope you get some more customers after that. It would be well deserved.
very cool
Beautiful playing bro!
Thanks Steven!
Just beautiful Ross!
Thank you :)
Really good quality teaching and playing!
Thanks David!
the andy timmons lick is just amazing the way you do it !
One of the best guitar teachers on youtube
You and Fretjam are my favourite
Thank you!
Definitely Ross is an amazing teacher, i also love fretjam and also Rick stagney from tastyguitar
That intro jam was sick. Absolutely fantastic lesson, sir.
Thanks so much!
Awesome lesson as always!
Thanks Matthew!
Lovely tone matey
Thanks!
Nice job...subbed
Thanks. Welcome!
Great tone!
Thanks!
When it comes to guitar, Hendrix was most certainly the man! Great work!
Agreed! Thank you :)
@@RossCampbellGuitarist My pleasure!
Man, my life will never be the same ) thanks a lot ! Nice one lesson , nice one player !!!
Thanks so much!
Ross the boss! Could listen to you play all day.
Proper lesson laddie!🙏🏻
Thank you!
That's a great exercise. Thanks
Glad you liked it, thanks!
Hendrix played barre chords with thumb and muted A string so he could instantly move from rhythm to lead and back again. He had no rhythm guitar backup.
Great lesson. Thanks.
I'm going to switch my guitar neck to a lefty neck, so my low E string will have the most play in it, just like the Master knew...
Yes sir! 👍👍
