People should be losing their minds over this video!!! This is essential to becoming a quality lead player and you just saved years off the learning curve - Thank you so very much!!!
Yea this is Excellent teaching! Just shows He's really talented at explaining it simple mentioned also theory. And makes it ready applicable!! Thank you very much Sir for this lesson! Was you first videoi watched, but just subscribed from now! Great level 👍
Basically your videos are the best for one simple reason: you're not looking to sell people something, which is what 99% of other youtube guitar channels are trying to do, and they always leave you confused on purpose so that you buy their courses. Please don't ever change!!!
I feel the same way you do about all that! So here is a lesson that I think you will enjoy, and I don't even have a single thing on my channel to sell. Any questions... just ask. ua-cam.com/video/my0ilnhog1Y/v-deo.html
@@theloniouscoltrane3778 Most are also just lazy people who can kind of play so if they read off a script they sound like a pro. No one wants to support a bum.
However if you do put a written course together that takes you logically through all your material, I'll buy that book in a heartbeat as the part that is confusing me is the logical order to learn the material for it all to start to click.
What I'm loving about your videos is that you point out things that seem completely intuitive in hindsight, but that lots of players (myself included) need to have pointed out to them to realize. This has already been invaluable to me.
If anybody can watch this and really assimilate all of this and get it, they’re pretty much set and then everything else beyond that is just icing on the cake. This is the most succinct lesson I have ever seen that really teaches a huge amount of concepts in a way anyone can understand.
I think the most important thing for guitar beginners is interest and repetition. As I listen to your music, the joy of practicing hard rises within me. Thank you, very much.
Been playing for YEARS and your videos are the best thing I have EVER SEEN/HEARD to simplify how to think about some lead playing!! You are BRILLIANT!!! THANK YOU!!!
When I first started to learn the guitar, I learned the Major scale first and I'm glad that I did. Once you learn it, you start to see how everything is connected to the Major scale and it all starts making sense. It makes things a lot easier.
Another good tutorial video! But for the under accomplished, the Pentatonic with the Blue Notes added (and the sweet notes from the Major scale) is the bread and butter. This will cover 99% of what a Lead guitarists needs in most situations. IMO
I am an amateur guitarist learning by myself and all that i have ever learnt was from youtube... Its been more then 5 years and belive me when i say this i have watched thousands of videos and this is by faar the very best video... Please keep up the good work. You have no idea how much it helps people like me who don't have a teacher to guide them.👍👍👍
The “playing all over the neck” tip is my biggest takeaway on this. I’ve been using the pentatonic scale in major in minor already, but this really opens up some possibilities to slide up and down from low to high that I didn’t have before, all because of that repeating pattern. Thanks so much!
WOAH. As a longtime player, the 3rd part of this is so simple yet I've never seen anyone teach that/explain it before, it's so simple yet sounds so good!
It’s well known, as the “frying pan/toothbrush method” or “diagonal pentatonic” it’s how you “escape” the box by sliding into the next. Great to use with CAGED understanding the neck.
Holy Tulsa! Sudenly I am a jazz player. Seriously, you made this so complicated that it suddenly became clear and easy! How did you DO that! Like the "guy with the gasses," with a great enormous brain who sees why it is, "the way it is," and then says, "but look! You just do THIS, and this and this, and ..." Scoot over Narfle the Garthok, he is on to you now! I have always thought there is some DeVinci code going on and I was right! You showed me the key!
Good stuff!! I wish 25 years ago when i learned to play that i started with major scale followed by understanding intervals and triads. You learn the fretboard and understand what’s happening so much better building from that foundation
Please - do yourself a favor, and re-title this video as "The Best Secret You'll Ever Learn On The Pentatonic"! This is an incredible video, because of how beautifully and simply you've explained and demonstrated such a dry subject. Just - WOW, and a huge Thank You!
I am at the point in my guitar journey where I’ve learned all the cowboy chords, I know a general understand of the caged system and my barre chords. Finally learning some music theory to understand chord progressions a bit more but I’m really struggling during solos or improving in a certain key, and this video was one of my biggest “aha” moments as a student. It really helped me to feel confident up and down the fretboard.
Just sitting here giggling thinking of myself watching a video like this years ago when I started playing guitar and how I would have been so lost there at the end. As someone who considers myself an intermediate guitar player at both best and worst, I appreciate the refresher and wish I had had this video years ago. I will definitely share with any noobs I come infect with the guitar fever.
This video made so much sense, I’ve just picked up the guitar again, and hadn’t really played since i was in my 20’s. I started experimenting up the fretboard and it started to make more sense than it did 20years ago, but this video verified what I was essentially testing out. Thanks for this!
As in most cases, keeping things simple breaks down the barriers to learning. Very helpful and important video which should help all players build their skills.
Great, great video Jules. I'm intermediate and love playing blues. This reallly helped me to think about the modes (despite it being about thee Pentatonic scale!) and the different context to how the sounds work in conjunction with each other. I'm focussing on ear training, and the 3rd part of the video helped me to hear the key change and tones. Thank you so much. Namaste x
I have only started messing about with lead and riffs etc from June and your videos are really great and easy to follow. I’m no Jimmy Page but I like the fact that I can just learn a shape and work from that rather than all the scales
I have been stuck in not really understanding how melodies (leads) work, for a long time-instinctively residing in the world of pentatonics. I finally get how to construct interesting basic lead riffs, as well as the relationship between major and minor pentatonic scales.. Thank you, good sir.
You da Champ....love your channel and teaching style/tools. At 60, "playing" since 9, I'm slowly becoming the guitarist I've always hoped to become someday.
This is a fantastic video. I have a degree in music and grade 8 in music theory and this has just totally blown my mind at how simple you’ve made it using the superimposed scales. Well done!!
Thanks Jules - another great video. On clicking on the 3 dots icon just below the screen to make a payment, I discovered that, by clicking on 'Transcription' I can view all you said and therefore go back over the info at my own pace without having to replay the video. I mention this because perhaps I'm not the only one who didn't know about this handy feature. I look forward to more videos in the coming year. Happy New Year.
Thanks this teaching has really showed me how to break out of the pentatonic scale and roll up and down the whole neck and it also shows how to break out and change it up a bit groovy man!!!!
At 3 years in, this is a very useful lesson. If you ever wanted to play guitar, it's a great time to start with these videos available. Plus guitars are very good well under $500. With Amps.
THANK YOU JULES! 🎸🎶 Your lessons are excellent when it comes to fundamentals… but you always take we subscribers to a place where we get a much more in depth understanding of the Guitar and the different Paths available!
You are exceptionally good at explaining this concept... I am a mediocre guitar player that forever searching to get out of Pentatonic patterns in my solo. This is the first time someone explain it from a beginner, mid and expert level and all make sense. Thank you.
Hi Juels: I have subsribed to a lot of lessons and I find that yours has made the most sense to me. I was stuck learing every scale out there but could never put it all togeather, yours made my "ah ah" moment thank you so much. Gerry
I've explained every single thing you mentioned in this video to all of my guitar playing buddies at least once, but I've never found a video with all of this info. This is probably the most important video for newer players to watch, and even more seasoned players could learn from it. Thank you for this amazing content!
I'm moving from beginner to intermediate. I know the major and minor scales, 5 positions of the pentatonic scale, and arpeggio scale, but trying to learn the notes on the fretboard to better understand music theory. This video is immensely helpful. Really love going at the topic on 3 different levels. I am now a subscriber.
If you're "moving from beginner to intermediate"... it might be helpful to know there's no such thing as the arpeggio scale. An arpeggio is the notes of a chord played individually. You can use any chord. There's no set shape, no "arpeggio scale".
You sir are the GOAT teacher! Wow! Hard to believe that the last line of playing was all pentatonic; and so well explained. You should create a course with a defined path. It would certainly be one of the best learning tool for guitarists of all levels. Anyway, thanks a lot for that great lesson!
Thanks to u i just learn these sales and was easier than most videos on here.i was playing a lot of power chords but lacking on my learning songs and lead runs keep on teaching Canadian Fan.
Wow by far You and your video are the best. For a total beginner it is easy to follow, easy to understand and very much detail - Thank you so very much
Thanks so much for clearly explaining this concept to me. Indeed, I believe you when you say it took you decades to figure this out. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic breakdown! I spent most of my years as a guitarist playing extreme metal, which utilizes a lot more 7 note scales and modes, but I've been getting into playing more bluesy rock lately and this helps a ton. Particularly the double blues scale. Definitely going to be playing around with that a lot now.
great video, only thing i would suggest is the flipping the fret diagram, its always useful to show it as one looks down their guitar, so the nut to the left of the diagram and the bridge end at the left
Nice lesson. I consider myself intermediate, however I learned something from each each section of the lesson. I've recently got brave enough to starting posting some of my own original song recordings and it's only because of people like this that have helped as a player. Thank you sir. I'll be back. :)
I wanted to learn jazz so I hope you’ll post easy to understand guitar video lessons about it, as you’ve been doing a great job for a long time in this channel. Thank you for your great contribution in UA-cam music community!
Follow-Up Video Suggestion: Can you elaborate on why/how you chose the tonalities over 2/5/1 progression? What principles and restrictions may apply? What scale leads to what tonality (besides the modal shifts, like altered or the Dm9 sound in your vid)? Maybe provide it in terms of interval relation to the chord? Meaning, when you played Am Pentatonic over Dm chord is basically the pentatonic scale based on the 5th of the Dm chord. How does it relate to being Dm the 2-chord? what if it were a different chord in the key? Trying to connect the dots...
Where were you 50 years ago??!! yes never mind :) ; regardless, this is by far the clearest guitar instruction I've viewed of dozens on same topic thanks!
I don't have decades left, but what I have I will spend trying to get to the expert level. I know there are harps in heaven, but I hope there are guitars, too. I'm going to wear this video out.
I like how you said it's not normal. I have been playing piano for years but I learned a lot of other scales first. Only have I recently discovered how useful they are lol.

Love it all....hand was damaged 7 years ago...now back at guitar but only the 2 small fingers. Before I learn all the minor pentatonic cord scale forwards and backwards..sweeps. A and B as well. That took time but then what..then I was injured. Ok. Now I hold that in my mind and find I'm learning so fast even with two fingers. Chords are a problem but will get better. Merry Christmas thanks
Thanks so much for the video! What I really liked was the third level. What I did not understand or pick up was how to determine which pentatonics to use over 2-5-1 progression. Please explain that as it would be most helpful. Thanks again and happy Boxing Day!
People should be losing their minds over this video!!! This is essential to becoming a quality lead player and you just saved years off the learning curve - Thank you so very much!!!
I’m tired from screaming at his other video. This is my new guitar hero.
This is an amazing tutorial. 12:45 blew my mind.
Can only agree!

this 15 min video has tons of knowledge!!! mastering this (which can take hours and hours) will mean a quantum leap for sure!!!
Omg, thank you. Years of guitar lessons and never got anything as helpful as this one video. Cant wait to try out the jazz
I am now convinced!! this is the only guitar channel I need - keep up the great content and teaching
Well said sir, it takes decades to be a master. Im tired if hearing YT teachers implying that guitar soloing can be achieved quickly. 👍
Like so many other people I am so bloody glad I found your site! What a wonder you are. So well explained and so easy to follow = LEARN.
The questions I've always had about Pentatonics and this video answers them all. Thank you.

Fantastic Jules, you always make it easy to understand , with easy going approach . Thanks mate
I like your simple and clear teaching method. Thanks.

Simply and practical explanation. Few accurate words Excellent master teacher. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Dude, you make something that seemed soo complicated, very easy to grasp, thanks man!
You were heavenly sent to do the Lord's work best tutor ever ❤❤❤
great video, only thing i would suggest is the flipping the fret diagram, its always useful to show it as one looks down their guitar, so the nut to the left of the diagram and the bridge end at the left

This is a great lesson. The graphics that you illustrate in the lesson makes it easier to understand. Thanks. I appreciate the tip.
Thanks Richard, I appreciate your encouragement.
Wow this was really easy for me to comprehend. First video I’ve seen of yours and you’ve earned yourself a sub
I wanted to learn jazz so I hope you’ll post easy to understand guitar video lessons about it, as you’ve been doing a great job for a long time in this channel. Thank you for your great contribution in UA-cam music community!
Best guitar teacher out there👌
Follow-Up Video Suggestion:
Can you elaborate on why/how you chose the tonalities over 2/5/1 progression?
What principles and restrictions may apply?
What scale leads to what tonality (besides the modal shifts, like altered or the Dm9 sound in your vid)?
Maybe provide it in terms of interval relation to the chord? Meaning, when you played Am Pentatonic over Dm chord is basically the pentatonic scale based on the 5th of the Dm chord. How does it relate to being Dm the 2-chord? what if it were a different chord in the key?
Trying to connect the dots...
use your arpeggio of the chord to start and resolve, anything in between doesn't really matter as long as its rhythmically palatable.
I'm new at guitar and loving how you teach. Thank-you!
Incredible breakdown. Concise and clear style of teaching. Well done. :)
Very helpful. The 251, the pentatonic. I grabbed it. Thanks. And I like it too.
Thank You
Jules! I love how you include the Notes
On The Fret Board! Excellent! Happy New Year!
Concise & informative! Beautifully done.
Great video, simple concepts explained simply in a pleasant and interesting way. Thank you.
Pentatonic doesn't have to be a I, iii, IV, V, vii. The Japanese Hirajoshi "koto scale" is I, III, #IV, V, VII. THAT will blast you out of cliche "blues" riffs, for sure. But I try to not play patterns, but rather conceive of the SOUND of melodic phrases and just "find them"
Great channel, Jules
This is the best explanation of music theory and scales I've ever seen 👍
I feel the growth in my playing thanks keep up the great content
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderfully educational. Thank you, sir! You"ve won my subscription.
Hey thank you 🙏 for sharing,I have never seen anything so concise and helpful 👍
This is my new favorite channel!
The information is very helpful..my hearing is diminished after playing loud rnr rnb for > 50 years ty
I admire your commitment to get back on the guitar. Merry Christmas to you too!
Thanks so much for the video! What I really liked was the third level. What I did not understand or pick up was how to determine which pentatonics to use over 2-5-1 progression. Please explain that as it would be most helpful. Thanks again and happy Boxing Day!
Yeah I'm wondering this as well
