@@mikeaaron2819he’s not selling material goods. He’s promoting his course, which is made up of knowledge and experience. If he tries to get you to pay extra for “more in depth study”, so what? This guy (and many others) make free videos that teach music for UA-cam viewers all the time.
Obviously, this guy isn’t a hobbyist or part timer. He’s not a plumber, or a surgeon, or a welder or a chef. He’s a real musician and teacher. He has dedicated his life to music.
You’re going to slap this guy for trying to make a living?
If musicians couldn’t make a living playing and teaching, they would be relegated to getting a “regular” job. And when you have a regular job, you can’t put in enough time to become a high level player or teacher. Only people who are born into financial security would be able to devote their life to playing and practicing and studying music enough to reach an elite level.
You will gladly pay a $20 cover charge to go watch a band at a bar, or $100 to see a big name band playing a concert at a large venue. You are actually paying that band for the privilege to see them perform. And that’s all you get. They don’t stop the show to teach you how they played that last song.
But a guy like this Ross Campbell will. He will teach you how to become better on your instrument, so that one day, maybe YOU will be charging people $20 to come see you play at the bar.
And yes, he did explain, in a general way, how to improve on the guitar.
He explained the reasons why playing diatonically will not work over a 7th chord blues progression. Now, you may have already known that, as I do, but not everybody knows that. And there was probably a time when you didn’t know that. So, the question is: how did you learn that? Did you pay a teacher? Did you watch one of Ross’ or some other UA-cam teachers many free UA-cam videos that go into that? Or, maybe you are gifted enough to have learned it on your own, kudos to you. You’re lucky.
Not everybody is. The rest of us have to learn it from other people. And sometimes, we actually have to pay them to teach us, and we learn, and they can then afford to buy a Big Mac for dinner. Because steak is almost unobtainable for the average music teacher.
This masterclass is probably the best blues improvisation lesson I've ever seen. Not only the quality of the solos but also the explanations on the theoretical foundations that are directly applied in practice. Ross congratulations, I already have the two Bulletproof Guitar Player courses that are impressive and now I will not hesitate to buy your book. Continue like this. I wish you all the best.

Ordered your book yesterday from Amazon, I think this will provide the answers I’ve been looking for. I’m 74 and have been playing guitar since 1964, this lesson opened my eyes to better blues soloing. I am from a mostly hard rock background.
Hi Ross, I watched your masterclass a couple of times from start to finish. I didn’t work on learning your solo note for note but I immediately started incorporating my own style and practicing your teaching and notes added to make the 4 and 5 chords work. I’ve spent a few hours practicing to your backing tracks. I will say that after I watched this video and you talked about the 4 and 5 7th chords and the notes that were needed, that really was something I never thought about but more than likely I was doing but just didn’t realize it. Your masterclass was great and you are a wonderful teacher. I will be purchasing the book. I would like to share that I’ve been playing guitar close to 40 years and the first 5 years, I learned open and barre chords and the Pentatonic blues scale but never had any music training. After 5 years, I got inspired to take lessons from a classical guitar teacher and he thought me the modes which absolutely changed my life. So for 35 years or so, I’ve always mixed modes and Pentatonic scales and played by ear. So as I was studying all of your teaching, I played the blues scale and added the Major 3rd over the 1 chord but for the 4 and 5, I mostly used the A Dorian mode and it felt like I was able to nail all the needed notes by combining by using the Dorian scale and then adding the blues note and Major 3rd note. I would love to hear your thoughts on that. Last thing is, I have a lead guitar teaching channel and even before I ran across this video, I was already preparing to do a video similar to this topic. I’m so glad I found you and look forward to learning more from you. Thank you!!

I just watched your 1-hour video and seriously gained more knowledge in that time than 3 month of just trying to play over backing tracks and figuring out by myself. Truly impressed. Thanks for your honesty about how you used to feel tense when improvising. I can relate to that. I definitely feel more free on the I chord but far less loose when the cords change

I started playing guitar when I was 16. Understood zero theory, just used to play from tab song books. Eventually got I bored because I could play stuff, but never understood what I was playing. Theory books were like another language to me. In the pandemic I picked up my guitar again and discovered this whole world of amazing guitar players on YT who were willing share their knowledge. It's been an absolute game changer for me, and I feel I wasted years and years, cursing myself for how good I could be now, if I'd have had the time and money for a tutor. Ross, I have been playing blues guitar for 50 years and I have never come across a teacher as good as you. Even though I consider myself reasonably good at blues lead improvisation I have learnt things from this class that I never really understood clearly. I started learning harmony from a pianist. There were so many different guitarist with different approaches to the instrument. I’d learn a 9th chord one guy and inversions from another. Then the piano I could see a relationship from a 9th and a m7b5 chord. I had to move all those concepts from piano to guitar. I had to deal with the linearity of a keyboard and the “complexity” of a fingerboard - my ear made me bend the min 3rd to the major 3rd. It was an interesting journey. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I actually found the free masterclass to be very rewarding and informational, although much of it is treading a path that I've already been exploring. Having you demonstrate and explain it is precisely the hammer that I need to make it stick in my head. The real "hook" for me however was bar 8 into bar 9 - simplicity and perfection rolled into one! My Blues soloing has actually already improved after taking in some of your tips on how to choose notes more thoughtfully. I have ordered a paperback version of your new book & can’t wait to make a start. I have purchased a couple of books recently, one on triads which is excellent, & one on phrasing, which is ok, but doesn’t expand on real theory. Hi Ross, thank you for the free lesson. I knew the passing note to the major 3rd for the 1 cord, but the use of it with the the other cords, was a real eye opener for me. For me, those passing notes and then the major 3rd, that sound is the blues!!
It has been very revealing and full of useful information. I will definitely get the Amazon book so that I don't have a stack of printed pages laying around somewhere but everything nicely kept together.

Excellent Masterclass - concise and clear. I’d say it’s for a solid Intermediate player, but the way Ross deals with each of the chords and breaks them down is great. I’ve “known” that the 3rds were important, but seeing the 4 notes of each chord laid out and the only one NOT the same being the 3rd was quite eye opening. It is worth the time for sure. And the video quality and production is awesome!

I struggle with this a lot with Beatles' songs. Sometimes it's their chord progressions, and sometimes it's the SUS chords mixed in or all of the above mixed together that confounds me. It's really frustrating. Thank you for this video and sharing your knowledge!

Thank you Ross. I very rarely am able to watch a full hour of video at one go (attention wanders…lol) but this was no problem because of your easy listening and teaching style. I have always had a great thirst for musical knowledge but particularly in later life, I have been turned on to the blues. Wow! Wow! Wow! This was fantastic Ross. I've always wondered why anything I play does not even come close to remotely sounding like the greats sound. No, I don't consider myself a good player but I play licks from the pentatonic and I don't get the sound I'm hearing in so many videos. Now I think I know why, thank to you. After watching so, so many hours of lessons and performance videos much of what you said in the Masterclass is perfectly understandable to me. My problem is turning that knowledge into guitar sounds. In other words, my brain knows far more than my fingers can play. But, I want to change that. This was a BIG first step in that direction. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Now I've got some work to do. Oh, and to help you out I'm going to purchase your book. Maybe both versions (physical copy and digital PDF). Then I can read it without my computer and also have the PDF copy for ease of access to the lessons for actual lessons when I'm playing. Geez, for the price you are charging I just have to do it. Xealzy. You're right. As a teen we never get to play in bars. They want us to play in noisy smoke filled with a lot of lights stripclubs here in America. Boy is it hard to concentrate.
I normally practice noodle over a I IV V sequence, even if there's no backing. I played a jam once where it was I IV V, but I could hear some times I was clashing. Fortunately it was recorded, and when I listened back, I found the other guitarist was subbing 9th chords for some of the previous Dom7 chords, so worth looking out for ('you'll hear it', as they say). Another is the 'latin blues' where the I & IV are minor but the V is major. Good for some melodic minor lines over that V.

Good video. I think to get around playing over the typical 3 chords of a blues, it's useful to try only playing over drums and bass and no underlying chords. I would get my students to do this and they quickly realise how limited their vocabulary and note choices are! You can't really hear the changes.
One extreme is to learn more jazz-blues theory and imply more chords through note-choice (like Robben Ford etc). However, if you listen to more simplistic blues masters, like BB, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray etc, you can strip it down using just minor, major and blues-scale pentatonics, focusing on using your ear to target 'good' notes over the 3 chords. It doesn't have to involve complex arpeggios, a diminished scale or modes - sometimes ond or two notes are enough.
Many learners these days are not using there ears and applying restraint. Less really can mean more in most cases!
Aaahhhh ! The Dreaded V Chord ... I usually put in some set 'Licks' i have in my memory bank, to navigate this

Two thinks i wished I learned right from the start
1 mixolydian scale from 6 string 3 fret
All notes land on dots
2. XXX YY ZZ shapes over strings
The first XXX is mixolydian scale
Like the example above shows when done
If you move from X to Y Move up 1 fret
When going from 3string to 2 go up on fret.
If 3 string is the last X and moving to Y it's 2 frets this is the only think to watch out for.
X 1 3 5 Y 124. Z 134
Been there done it buying tab books that are written wrong etc lol
I always keep eye on the 3rd and 7th notes due to close relationship to 4 and 8 if major
2. 5 if minor
If that guitar in the video of you playing Texas Flood is a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Strat, I have the exact same guitar. The Olympic white with the gold pick guard was discontinued and is quite rare from what I hear. I absolutely love mine.
It was indeed. It belonged to the singer I just used it whenever we'd do SRV tunes as I didn't own any single coil guitars at the time

Hey! Yeah you get all of that for free. If you want the PDF version in addition to the paperback, you'll have to pay for that. But all of the attachments - 126 video & audio examples plus the 72 backing tracks - come for free regardless of which version you buy
I'd definitely say Blues is my favorite style to solo, but I can also certainly see the limitations implied. Being able to be creative and expand your horizons, even in just the bounds of a single genre of playing, can really amplify one's inventiveness and imagination. Cheers as always man.

There’s another reason why people refer to those patterns as “blues boxes”. They’ll box you in!
show what chord is being strum over the riff slowly & the basic sequence of notes per riff & chord slowly. from the 1 chord to 4 & 5 including the loop.

Ross, I purchased the book. While it appears to be a great book the errors go beyond typo's, un-finished idea, irregular sentences (at least one every two or three pages, you need a better proof reader). And some of the example videos do not play back properly (5.20, 6.2). You need to have this addressed to effectively communicate your message. I did not post this on Amazon as a review of the book, giving you a chance to fix it all in a second edition.
I just go from Mixolydian to Dorian to Ionian on those three chord with trying to flourish it with chromatic notes.

Can someone recommend outstanding sounding blues w/o vocals, i.e. instrumental? I tried Robben Ford and couldn't stand those songs. I just want guitar blues music with perfect detailed sound. Thanks!
To get good at blues it helps to really listen to the music and develop your ear with playing along with the albums for hours at a time and not just copy the lead parts but improvise your own licks .

Oh an add for a free class and me that was waiting for the answer.. I’ll keep switching from I minor pantatonic over I and major pantatonic of the 4 over the 4 and 5 over 5 then. Or minor blues over everything and select root or 3rd of 4 and 5 chord at the change.
You could do that. Or you could expand your horizons by watching the free masterclass. It is literally free and packs a lot of value :) just check the comments section to see the reviews for yourself if you don't believe me.

I just watched the long video on your website. One question. Why did you choose minor pentatonic over a major chord progression? Maybe I missed something you said, but quite a few of the notes you ended up adding in are in the major pentatonic by default. Why did you make that choice - minor pentatonic to start from??
Good question! So it's actually not a major progression since all of the chords are dominant 7th's. Though, they do all contain major 3rd's so it makes sense why you could hear it as major. We're so used to hearing the minor pentatonic over dominant 7th chords and technically, it's flat 3rd should clash with the major 3rd in the chord, but as mentioned in the masterclass, when you use it in combination with the major 3rd it can sound really tasty.
To add to that - most intermediate blues players are taught to use the minor pentatonic to begin with, so I wanted to relate everything to something very familiar for most/all players watching.
But what about getting beyond STUCK level whenever we playing in minor pentatonic?
So Shuggie Otis, Eddie Hazel,Mike Hampton,Ernie Isley,and Jesse Johnson get no mention

when improvising over for exampl, a minor blues that doesn't exclusively use dom7ths, do you think in alterations of what we learn here or are there completely different structures that you think of
With a minor blues you actually can take a 'one scale fits all' approach. Of course you can use arpeggios and triads etc too but the 'dominant' blues requires more care and attention to each chord
