In this video, I unbox my new CS 1500 Chain saw that I got after my old one died. I talk about the saw itself and my experience using it to cut down several trees.

Reminder: If you buy or have this chainsaw: The Bar must always be very lubricated with bar oil! The bar should never get hot! There are plastic parts that can fail if the moter overheats. Go slow and keep an eye on this issue. Happy cutting!

You don't have to go slow, you just always have to make sure it's clean and oil is spitting out of the end of the chain when you press go
@@rugfixr Yes! Well, when I say "go slow" I am thinking about my milling cuts that are longer than normal cross-cuts, so I stop often to check the oil and motor & Bar temp. I think I just pushed that little motor too hard on the one they replaced. Was out yesterday milling and discovered the bar was dry so I stopped. Full cleaning tomorrow to see what's up. I think the small wood chip could block the channel very easily.

The fact that this will auto sharpen makes it a real google choice for a chainsaw mill saw. Most of the videos I’ve seen, they have to put on a new chain every 16-20 feet on boards 12 inches wide. Meaning multiple blades per tree milled. Thanks for the video.

I had 4 gas saws (S, H, Dolmar) all in need of work 2 yrs ago. I needed something for a small/med. issue that came up.
I got one of these Oregons and have been impressed to the point where the other saws are still waiting.
I've been using it on hardwood (maple, ash, elm, etc. up to ~20" diam. (hard maple). Everyone's got different needs, but these are well worth a try.

In the U.K. same box but chain in a bag and chain guide wrapped in brown paper i.e. not preassembled. No oil supplied. Chain tensioner different to the one in the instructions supplied with my chainsaw! No one answered the phone when I tried to speak to someone about the mismatch between the instructions and what was in the box. Chain saw brilliant once put together. I bought the chainsaw 3rd December 2020. Thanks for your video, by showing the tensioner with the cover off you confirmed that I had assembled my chainsaw correctly, the other 3 vids I have seen didn't show the saw with the chain bar off. Regarding the oil cap, you have to be careful to not cross the thread, my one has a gap like yours did but mine doesn't leak oil.
Yes, I can confirm that they are also packaging them differently here too now. Oregon just replaced my old one that stopped working right as I mentioned in the video. That one came in a box with the bar and chain not preassembled. I'll be aware to not cross the threads on the oil restore cap and see if that was my issue. Thanks for the heads up.
Hugh Musbekidding Sharpens really well. I give it a 3 second burst for about each 12 hours of cutting. Sharpening of any chain reduces its lifetime but who wants a blunt chain that lasts forever!!! I bought 2 spare chains but still on the one the saw came with. I've not only chopped down several trees with the chainsaw but I've also used it to convert the fallen trees into logs for my small wood burner rather than split the wood using an axe.

I'm 63 and about to purchase my life's 3rd electric chain saw. I have my first battery saw and put my second gas saw in permanent storage. Spotted this cs1500 and thought I'd check some reviews. In your great review what really stood out was that potter's wheel in the background. I like how you cut your thumb but put on a latex glove and put that wheel to use. Your students will love it, I dare you.

I love mine a work horse. I cut up 11 downed trees in a weekend. Well at 100 bucks and change it breaks get another one.

Excellent review! This is the review of the exact saw I intend to purchase this weekend.
At our cottage in northern Wisconsin we cut logs to split every fall, and that cutting takes place very near the cottage itself.
We have a gas-powered Stihl MS211C that is finicky as hell. Drives me nuts.
At first I contemplated getting a cordless saw, but now don’t see much sense in doing that for our situation. We have outlets in our shed a mere 15’ from where we cut the logs.
Anyway, this review sealed the deal for me. Very informative!🙂👍🏼👏🏼

Priming the Oiler is a CRITICAL STEP that should be followed if you want your Chain Saw and bar to last a long time.( See owners MANUAL: PRIMING THE OILER, at about Page 13, or 14). That said, you will needed a quart(liter) of bar and chain oil from your supply store as that tiny bottle that come in the box will be used up quickly

Thank you! I just now unboxed mine and it would not start. It turned out the kickback guard was engaged out of the box. The thing that compounded my attempt at troubleshooting is that the extension cord doesn't fit snugly to the saw's electric receptacle.The saw is 2 prong and all my cords are 3 prong and it is difficult to get the cord to attach.
Ya it will unplug on you constantly so I loop it through the handle. Then you can pull on the cord without unplugging it.

Thanks for the review,,,I found it really very helpful.. I have a spear and Jackson electric chainsaw, I bought 3 years and 3 months ago.. it worked brilliantly up until last week, it started losing oil ,, I took it to a repair shop, they said it was the pump gone in it.. anyway I am looking for a replacement saw and I think this Oregan saw is probably one of the best on the market for the price of it..you didn't mention the size of the engine I think.. it's a 2400 watt saw, my S & J is 2000 watt, way more power in the Oregan saw..you also pointed out some valuable comments like that cap, that's important to know.. I did see another review on this saw and they made a point of priming the oil chamber before first use, which was also said here in the comments.
I am waiting to hear back from S & J about my saw even if it's out of guarantee by 3 months. But it looks like I'll be buying this saw..

Sorry you old saw died. I still love this little saw and get a lot of work out it but do stop a lot to check the bar oil or just let it cool down. I just finished cutting 5 one inch slabs from a 10 ft long cherry log and 17” wide.
Yes I learned about priming the oil from that comment. After I clean it I prime it so it’s ready to go. Good luck and happy cutting.

I am delighted with the service I got from them.
I haven't used the new one yet, so I can't say if it has any issues..

ive got one , problem i have is the design uses a reverse tooth system that is very sharp and gives its the ability to sharpen itself. however, the teeth are easy to break off and the sharpening stone is easily eroded. $30 for a new chain is a bit over the top
Hi, Jason. Thanks for your informative video. My question is whether the saw will be good enough to be powered with my Eu 2000i electric generator if I use it to cut some slabs.
Well sadly I am not qualified to answer electric questions but if your generator has a 120 outlet than give it a try. If the saw draws too much power I suppose the generator will shut off or trip its breaker and you will have your answer. The support line once told me it is critical that you use the proper gage extension cord. Cant remember what it is but I'm using it and it helps to keep from popping my breaker all the time.
Let me know if it works. I have a generator too and might need that setup to work some day.

quick question, on the bar you have said the bolt should be at the bottom, so oil goes through the top hole, however these new(ish) unassembled boxed have the bolt already in the top bar, you reckon I should take it out and put it in the bottom?
I'm having a hard time visualizing what your talking about. There is only one bolt that comes out of the body and goes through the bar to hold it on with the nut embedded in the round plastic adjustment diel.. Maybe they changed it so I don't know what they're doing.

Ya chains are not cheep. I get this one from Home Depot. Comes with two for $32.

Is any manufacture Bar oil OK to use with the 1500 ? Do you have to use the expensive Oregon "PowerSharp" 571037 Replacement Saw Chain or can you use other brands with the same pitch, width, and number of drive links etc. ?? Does the grinding stone have to be replaced with each chain replacement of does it last for multiple chains ? Love you in depth videos on this chainsaw. I will be useing sideways like your using so I am concerned about the clogging of the oil feed issue but all in all most byers are happy with this one except the expense of the Oregon "PowerSharp" chains
Cool. Ya I just buy bar oil from home depot and it works fine. My replacement chains have all been from Amazon. you can get a double back of Oregon's S62 chain for $30. It's the same chain that fits several other 18" saws. I get my milling chain from a saw shop back east. It's in the old comments somewhere. I can try to find his card with phone # if you need it. The stone last forever because you don't want to use it much for reasons posted in the comments below. It flattens your chain and you get smaller chips. and you cant use it if you have a milling chain on the saw. If your going to mill you definitely want to have a milling jig and don't be in a hurry. check your bar temp and try not to overheat it. take brakes. The softer the wood species the easer it all works. The harder the more the struggle. I have not milled in a year now so I haven't tried anything new. Let us know hoe it works for you! Happy cutting!

I recently bought one of these saws, it's a great saw with one problem.
I'm having trouble with the chain oil.
It seems there are a few problems with it.
1, too much oil comes out with no adjustment that I can see.
2, most of the oil leaks between the bar and the side of the engine.
And 3, there's no separate oil hole on the bar itself, this isn't really an issue though as the oil goes into the positioning hole for the chain tensioner.
Do you have the same problem with yours now that's it's a year old?
Is there anything that I can do about the amount of oil coming out? .
I will say this though in it's faviour . I did work it hard and it did get clogged up with dust n stuff, so all of that didn't do it any good.
If you have any advice I'd be grateful.

Well that a new issue, to much oil! I would prefer to much to not enough. My older CS 1500 make me stop and let it cool constantly because almost no oil flows. Sounds like that made some change in how the oil flows to the bar. Interesting. I’m going to brake out my new one soon to carve another bear but it’s a year old and I think will have the same old oil issues. Need to see a pic of you r saw oil bar connection. Sorry I’m not more help. Happy cutting!
Did you check the chain Guard? He heee! It is a chain brake > Once it set! It will not start! Just pull back on the brake, and it should work. The biggest problem i have is hitting screws and nails. in my trees. That some one put in them > I DON'T PUT NAILS AND SCREWS IN MY TREES
Hi, I was wondering if your oil problems were related to you changing the cap? I have just bought one of these and I note that it has the cap that you swapped out. The cap has a small hole in the top, presumably to allow air in. Could this be the problem?
No the other cap came from an earlier model of the same saw. The real issue is that the oil pump cannot handle any blockage and does not create enough pressure to push through it. For some reason being held on its side blocks the oil even faster so mill cutting is difficult. But take your time dont overheat it and she will get the job done. Happy cutting!
Just ordered one. My Poulon lasted many years but the chain will not stay on. Home Depot extended warranty one star reviews. Just have to see what happens.
Wrong information. You do not need to complete product registrations in order to maintain the validity of the warranty. What companies will do with the information is bombard you with offers because they will sell your information. Just retain your receipt. Good review, and mine came today.

How come you failed to do initial prime as required (remove bar and chain, etc.)?
Yes this has been pointed out several times. Wish I could go back and add it to the video. It is critical and very helpful to prime your oil. I Prime without the bar on then once flowing I attach the bar then continue priming util the bar and chain are all oiled. But it still clogs fat different speeds depending on what you are doing. I have another video just on the oil issues.
do i have to correct the depth gauges after charpening with the self charpening ?
Nope, you just push the lever for three seconds and your good to keep cutting.

I never seen someone so dedicated to the comment section of their video. Good job interacting with your viewers. And alot of valuable information was exchanged here. Guess I’ll make my way over to the oil issues video before I decide on purchasing. Have you ever got to operate the 1400? It’s basically the same saw, but without the self-sharpening feature or chain. Another reviewer said the 1500 cut unlike any other chainsaw he ever used and thinks it’s because of the way the chain has to be designed and constructed in order to be sharpened by the stone. I wonder if with a regular chain it’s a better cutter? And maybe with less moving parts (and features) it follows that less problems will arrive. I wonder also if by chance the oiling mechanism is different, only if in a small way, that makes a huge difference. Surely it’s $25 cheaper where I live. Again, great video, and bravo for interacting meaningfully with your viewers!

I think alot of us are visual and hands-on learners, and UA-cam has been revolutionary in providing us access to a wealth of varied information through those mediums. We should all be looking to give back when we can as I’m sure there’s a whole lot of us that’s benefited. It’s really a community of people sharing with each other when you really think about it. It’s amazing how the Internet has helped us to connect with each other more than ever before.
I’m not sure that I will try the 1400, as I think the extra $25 for the 1500 presents so much more value given the extras you get for a small percentage more. I’d like to take one for the team, but don’t want to sacrifice the value at the same time 😅.
Tell me, does the 1500 cut kinda weird? Not necessarily in a bad way, but in a way that is different from any other chainsaw you’ve handled? And if so, is it in fact preferable or not?

@@autocompletellc9906 Well To me the biggest difference with handling is how lite it is compared to a gas powered saws although it is fairly small. I just got an 18 gas saw from my dad and now you give me the idea of making a side by side comparison. Some issues of feel are so subtle you wont know unless you can hold and use them side by side. Anyways, no nothing weird about the cs 1500 that I can think of, but it is my normal thus the comparison idea.

Do you think in general the chain lasts as long as a standard hand-sharpened chain?
Can these chains be sharpened by hand once the stone is worn down? The links look different to a standard chain.
Yes, absolutely. I have hand sharpened before. Now I take to a local pro shop who sharpens my chains for me. Only $7

Does not come ready for use out of the box in the UK. You have to put the chain to the bar then add to the body.
Yes , now its that way in the US too. I got another one last year and it cam unassembled.

I use my air compressor, but if I did not have that I would just use a vinal brush and rag.

Did you recognise that you loosened the chain with your cutting movement at 13:47 and that the chain was totally loose at 13:53 😱😱
Wow Good eye! I did not see or remember that. This chain saw will loosen the chain fast if you did not tighten it correctly before starting.
@@Jasonsdesignshop when it gets hot the metal chains expand, so tighten it, but remember when it cools down it might be too tight and you might have to loosen it a bit. I don't have a chain saw, but I'm UA-cam smart. LOL.

The only thing went bad the stone fell off after the 3rd sharpening. Wished they just sold the replacement stone

Just taken mine back, chain keep coming off followed instructions not a clue why any help would be much appreciated please, even quick tutorial, spent 3.5 hrs with chain coming off 4 times, have new one ready to go but would like some help 🙃 🤦🤷♂️👍
I had that issue when I first got mi e too. The chain kept getting loose Finally I learned to tighten the red ring to get to chain to the right tension. Then don’t let it spin while you tighten the center locking hub nice and tight! Hope that solves it for you. Happy cutting.
my is not oiling or i cant see it like in my gas shainsaw ..do you see the chain oiled ? or is just me who want to see the chain super extra oiled ?i took the bar and chain appart and the oil pump is working good at least i see oil coming through the hole but the chain is not shiny for the oil.
Yes you can see the oil in the chamber through the opaque plastic but not easily. You know its flowing when it keeps getting lower and you run out over time. I top it off before every use. Ya the chain is never really oily on the outside but in the groove if you take the chain off you should find oil. Often my bar is dirty with oil and saw dust after some cutting.

@@Jasonsdesignshop I purchased one of these recently and the bar oiler behaves much different from my larger gas saws which hurl oil everywhere. I'm not sure if mine is actually oiling. If you would consider doing a video on this it would help many people. I contacted tech support today and their response was poor.

No it will work but it’s not enough to cut for very long. You will need to buy a bottle of chain oil from your hardware store.
Before the chain got extremely hot, began smoking and used 2 lots of oil.
I returned it and got my money back. Was it faulty or could I have set it up wrong?
Sounds like it was faulty. I can’t think of how you could set it up wrong and not get any oil in the bar to the point of burning it up yet you use lots of oil. Very strange. Was it dripping oil out somewhere else? Normally it mixes with the sawdust and you should never get any dripping oil.

I’m gonna buy another another get it set up by a friend who works with chainsaws. She has suggested I may have put the chain on backwards!!!
I hadn’t thought of that but it would be typical of me. Having my knuckles dragging on the ground makes me a little poor at practical tasks. 😂

Mine came with the same short cap. Not sure why this was overlooked, especially with the floating washer it never touches.
If there is a rubber seal on the inside of the cap that will keep it from leaking then you are ok. Ya the floating washer is strange.
@@Jasonsdesignshop There is and I never saw oil coming from around the cap so it is sealing. But the oiler issue worries me because I have already noticed even though it primes it doesn't seem to keep nearly enough on the bar.
@@goddesstc Did you watch my other video on the oil issues? All I can say is clean it after each use and get a fresh start each time. Prime the oil and make sure it is flowing before cutting. if it gets clogged check you bar temp and dont let it over heat. That small motor will burn up if pushed too hard. Some have said it really only clogs when the chips are to small meaning you chain might be getting dull. Something Im going to try next time I use the saw is to drill a very small hole in the back of the oil cap to release the vacuum and let more oil flow. Well, hope that helps with some ideas. @@Jasonsdesignshop Yes, I have watched the other vids. I ended up taking the saw back. Even though it was pumping out oil just fine, it was just not getting into the bar/chain. I removed the cover and looked at everything. This was a brand new unit, so the chain was sharp. But it was accumulating black gunk which was the oil and some kind of fine powder mixed. That all seemed to get thrown against the sharpening stone, which accumulated quickly and then got pushed onto the chain and bar. This was after just a bit of cutting. I went through several iterations of removng everything, cleaning, checking the oil flow, etc. Same issue every time. No way I had that kind of time to clean after so little cutting. Plus, what if I had tried out the sharpening feature not knowing that gunk had accumulated all along the stone? I did not want to take the time and try this, because I wanted to return and start looking at reviews of alternatives. But I wonder if removing the sharpening stone would allow that "gunk" to get thrown back further and not affect the bar/chain after so little use. Maybe this could be something to try when you are milling? Just a thought.

I never thought to remove the stone, but why not if I almost never use it. I just got my third cs 1500 and am planning to do a comparison video between it and another 18 in gas saw my dad gave me. @@StartVisit Ok going to put the new one back on and reanalyze it. It leaked for me and many others as the rubber seal did not compress when the cap was screwed down.

You didn't remark about the water-thin bottle of "bar and chain oil" included. They also require an involved priming of the oil pump before you can use the saw. I'll probably call them and ask if they are serious about using that watery stuff in the bottle, which doesn't even have a product number. BTW, Oregon sells only one variety of bar and chain oil and it is described as "providing extra tackiness", so it cannot be the stuff in the box. UPDATE 12/4/22: I really dislike this machine now, after trying to cut up a fallen apple tree. The delicate little mini chain keeps jumping out of the miniature bar groove, a situation that is not addressed in the boilerplate "Troubleshooting" pages. To re-install it requires you to turn the machine on its side, but they neglected to make the saw stand on its side. It's ROUNDED. If I didn't hate this saw I'd fabricate a proper flat plate and affix it to this roundosity, just so I wouldn't, like Jason, have to brace it with my pants. It isn't even balanced so it wants to tip forward. There are so many "gotchas" with this saw that I don't think it's a good choice. The only reason I got it, since I have a gas one, was out of consideration of my neighbors.
Ya a year after this video I made another one just talking about the bar oil issue’s. It’s their most persistent problem. Check that video out. Some solutions: Loosen the cap to help oil flow if keeping the saw right side up. Get it clean from previous use and then prime it by running it until you get oil on the chain.

The oil cap must be screw in correctly. back it off try again. it should fit flat against the oil ring You have to be dead on it. Also give your electric chainsaw breaks. Don't run it for hours a time! about 20 min and let it cool off

Chain stops immediately when ypu take ypur fimger off the trigger. Causes it to grab. Bind. Get stuck. Put chsin on 6 times in less than an hour. Saftey feature sucks!!
This is not normal. I have never had this happen to me in thousands of quick stops each time you release the trigger. No commenter has ever stated they have this problem either. Your chain and Bar are either not connected correctly and tightened or you have a defective product.

Worst purchase I made - utterly gutless witch for anything more than thick sticks. Got a proper petrol Huskie on the way to replace this piece of junk.
Ya No one is saying its even close to a gas powered saw. You get what you pay for so sounds like your getting a nice saw! Happy cutting!
