Just had mine die this evening. '05 1200 Sporty. Spin but no throw. Looking to see what it'll take to fix. I only have my sidewalk to work on. Either that or sell one of my kids and take it to the Harley shop I guess. Thanks for the video.
@@Kaptain13Gonzo I would still start with the battery and a multimeter. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Try to start the bike and see how low the voltage drops. The manual will give the spec for the maximum voltage drop.
@@twinsmotogarage1866 Fair enough. A multimeter test is a very cheap first step. I've been looking at parts and tools, plus need for a work space, and it's coming out pretty dear. Thank you.
Cool to see SaddleTramp watches the channel. Defiantly not a common issue for the Evo Sportster. I had a new battery, relay, good connections and solenoid. I got frustrated and smacked the original starter motor with a hammer and sure enough it started.
So this is a ridiculous question but where does the hot wire hooked to the starter go? Because this sportster I just picked up has another one that goes to the harness and the one on the starter. Do they go on the same battery terminal or what?
If I remember correctly there is a big wire that goes directly from the battery or main harness to the solenoid. There is a small trigger wire that goes from the relay to the solenoid.
@@travisduckoff3669At the time of posting there was only one other sportster starter replacement video on UA-cam. The video is meant to give an idea of what the job entails. If you have basic skills, you can take it from there. It’s not meant to replace the service manual. I don’t trust getting torque specs from a single UA-cam video and therefore I usually don’t post them to encourage others to do their own research. If wrench sizes are holding you back I’d recommend you take the bike to a competent mechanic.

Could be that the battery doesn’t have the cranking power. Might want to load test it
@@twinsmotogarage1866 Battery 'should' be okay. Less than 1 Month old.

Mine started doing the same…wine but wouldn’t kick over.. and I road it around. Seemed to charge the battery. New battery!
fuck me ... the starter is INSIDE the thing ... well that sucks ...
Did you do a bench test of the new starter before putting it in?
Hmm... I've never heard of an evo sportster starter taking a dump. I guess though that everything brakes if you give it time.

@@twinsmotogarage1866 Magic hammer does the trick on a bad starter motor. Good call.
What size Alan socket is the starter mounting bolts?

What year sporty? I have a 2015 48 and I'm trying to see if it's the same process
This was on an 06 but the part number is the same for many year models of the sportster. Check the link in the description.
Did it start up ok, after replacing the starter?
Yes
do you have to jack the bike up to get to the starter?
No jack needed.
Can a Harley Sportster starter fit on a road king
No mate they’re different in size
Throwin my stager woe hat in the ring 05 sporty as well 10k miles spinning starter guess its the age
what did they say the torque spec was ?
Best to get factory service manual.

There are plenty of detailed videos on UA-cam showing those steps.
No wrench sizes no torque specs and doesn't show actually doing the job.
What a momo
