It's a way of suggesting that gay men lead shadowy, dishonest lives - not even true to themselves - under a thin pretence of being 'sympathetic to our 'plight'.
I know. Why do gay people even feel they need to hide? These days if anyone at work gives you a hard time there’s a criminal record for the hate speaker, a civil trial for the employer and a massive new bank accout with early retirement for you. Thankfully we are are far beyond taking crap from ignorant people.
The script is just fine as it is, just recycle it into another show whose characters are located in south Texas, a place where closet space is at a premium.

Texting JP from Maxine's phone and saying 'you've caught us" is the most transparent move I've ever seen 😂 If that was me, I would have shown Maxine the text and said "you didn't send this then?" and when she says no, I'd look Carter dead in the eyes and say "Well somebody must be CONFUSED" 😂😂

It's really so odd that Craig is never alluded to nor brought up, not even by his family like Darren. If the show was going to obscure his existence, they may as well have killed him off, because at least then no-one ever mentioning him (especially around JP) would make a bit of sense.

I've been watching some of the older storylines - County Lines for example and the writing of Hollyoaks back then was so good and still brings a tear to my eye, I've realised lately that half of the cast I don't care about since Sid and Juliet have gone. They were the best characters and watching Romeo and Peri together after Juliet's death is just so wrong and I hope it's one of the storylines that are being re-written.

You are right. I got hooked on Hollyoaks during the Breeda serial killing storyline. The show's gone down the pan since then. It's just a bunch of half-baked teen angst, with the "adults" reduced to juvenile bedhopping.
Hollyoaks kind been awful for a while, minus have few good sl's sometimes, they throw any random people together, Peri and Romeo is joke and disrespectful to Juliet so soon after her death.
So Maxine is Carters beard. Just like Tegan was Ryan's and Sarah Barns was Craig's. When will the women of Hollyoaks village realize it.

@@loobyh6274 He looks very good for 40. I can never work out if the actor is gay but denies it. It reminds me of Scott Neal years ago in The Bill, with his pretend girlfriend, forever denying he was gay IRL but now married to a male TV executive. Both James and Scott always play gay roles.

It's funny to see such a big guy get pushed around (recently, Carter pushing John Paul against the wall). I think it emphasizes his vulnerability and low self-esteem.
It's completely ridiculous that by this point in JP's life and maturity (and yes, at his big age/size) he'd be taking abuse from pipsqueak closet cases. Most out gay men learn by their 30s & 40s to toughen up and avoid creeps.
@@pendafen7405 The first time Carter kissed John Paul and pulled away, John Paul should not have reciprocated. He should have left it where Carter was wanting more. The writers have John Paul way too willing to accommodate which eliminates a natural buildup.
Ste goes on about Brendan, but JP never mentions Craig, how long it took for him to leave Sarah and accept he loved him.

When his ears perks up as John Paul is on the phone and his gay-but-straight mannerisms and superior complex... not saying that they make a person gay but the level of detail is impeccable. It really is just the same scenario, only it has a lot less impact when it's grown men in the 2020s. JP & Craig's story was so moving and powerful because for the time it was new and audacious on British telly, and because as young characters they had less control over their lives and feelings so the drama was more authentic.

Though I didn't actually marry, I considered it, and my "born again" phase is a part of my life I look back on with shame. I didn't attack gay men, verbally or physically, but I was literally homophobic, afraid of those who were open and honest 😔 I tried to believe they were "sinners".

I used to be a fan of Hollyoaks but haven't seen it for two years until now... the actors mumble and communicate in grunts and poor diction. How about slowing down their chit chat and speak more clearly ??? A lot of their conversation comes across as mush. Some of these people have been there so long that they seem to consider it just a job that they want to get over with.. their acting is fake and uncomfortable.

I like Ste these days, and it was sweet of him to give his old friend & ex support, but he has got a bit of a nerve saying this. He messed Amy around for years and broke her heart as well as her family because he wasn't honest with her (about his sexuality among several other things). Also, he's technically a bisexual man, so he can't really speak exactly to JP's experiences as a 100% gay man--and perhaps it's a similar situation with Carter (he may be closeted self-loathing bi, or heteroromantic homosexual). Doesn't excuse Carter's behaviour and brainwashing, though, nor Brendan's. And actually, it's quite sad that after all this time Ste still doesn't see Brendan as the cruel, abusive, using person he was.

I'm gen x and just came out finally to myself and publicly. The internal struggle was HELL. I am at peace for the first time in my life. Not telling myself I'm "straight" or "bi".

@@richardlee2642 I've decided to consider myself straight again, because I'm normal and masculine. There are so many guys who are feminine with gf's or wives and kids who flirt with me in public. They're everywhere. Of course they identify as straight. I am substantially more manly than these feminized males, so I have to defend my manhood. By their definition of straight, I am straight, they are closet case gays who are in relationships with women, and have kids or will have kids. I'm going to find another guy like myself, who's straight identified, to have a relationship with(not involving women).

If I'm gay, then they are too, so we're not.
Gay and straight, there are different ways to define it. I am straight, because I'm very manly, has nothing to do with who I have sex with. That's the definition I go by. Generation Z is effeminate af, notvall, but MANY males(naturally) and they still hide the fact that they are attracted to men. They still use women as a cover, whether they also like women or not.

I noticed sadly... that the spark between John Paul & Ste is only dormant not dead.
To me they just seem like affectionate friends. It's important for gay people to have good close friends who are likewise gay---even more important than having a partner or lover imo.
