For LA traffic (The worst in the usa on the 405) and my wife that doesn't have the time to learn or deal with the manual, i too got an auto. The car is still very enjoyable. Auto is also slightly faster on track believe it or not. I'm enjoying it and will not apologize for spending my own money where i want to.

A balanced view. I have a manual BRZ but appreciate that an automatic option raises the odds that the platform sells enough to stay in production. This is the last “cheap” sports car available that has a hard top. The biggest buzz kill is the engine but everything has some kind of trade off.

I think the engine size and power is perfect for a budget sports car but I admit that I would much rather have an inline over a boxer.
For a budget car, an inline is so much less hassle and so much easier to work on and modify.
Dont get me wrong, I love boxer engines, but they aren't budget friendly engines.

Thank you for making this video. I’m currently looking to buy a 2023/2024 GR86 and got hit with the exact same feedback from car enthusiasts friends on, “If your not buying a manual gr86, your not buying the fun.” While I agree that there’s a certain charm to driving manual, I can’t see myself daily driving it and constantly having to be engaged on what input is happening to the car.
For me personally, automatics are easier on the input so I can focus more on driving, looking, and talking with passengers.
Still! If the stars align hopefully I can buy a more classic manual car to learn on and get more experience under my belt before considering daily driving.

I think one thing that a lot of manual sports car guys for get is what happens when you **physically** can't work a clutch pedal any more? I had a work injury take out my knee to the point that I can probably work a lightly clutched car for about 10 minutes before I loose all strength in that leg. That injury besides making walking a pain to do locked out a lot of cars for me because I couldn't drive them.
I also realized that even if my leg hadn't been wrecked I tend to keep my cars a minimum of 10 years or more, I don't want to have to sell a car that I love and have taken car of because "I can't drive it any more." as I age. Automatics have gotten to the point where they are good for all but the hardest driving and if there is enough demand the aftermarket can start to offer transmission tuning and upgrades even for the automatics.

This year or next year, I'm going to be buying a GR86 or a Miata still deciding. What I have decided is to opt for an auto. I have over an hour work commute in Southern California traffic. Also just many other reasons I think an auto will be a more relaxing drive all together.
Thanks so much for reviewing this beauty in automatic. BTW my current is orange, and I have always hated but, ironically i get a lot of compliments.

    • @Skikyro

I own a 2019 ND2 RF Club manual and I’m also buying a GR86 (not trading in the Miata) and I have test driven the gr86, here’s what I think. The Miata has a way better transmission feel and fun factor, not just the buttery smoothness of the shifting and rev matching etc but also the convertible nature of it. It’s genuinely the most fun car I’ve ever driven or owned. HOWEVER upon driving the GR86 I fell in love with the extra power it possesses over the Miata, not enough to trade in my Miata for it. But enough to turn my Miata into a project car and get the GR86 as well. It’s also a bigger more practical car so keep that in mind! I love both if you’re dead set on auto just keep in mind that the manual is a whole other world of fun and beauty and manual sports cars like these won’t exist for much longer. We have a lifetime ahead of us to get auto hybrids and electrics. Remember that.

To me, AT cars like this seem more fun than a traditional MT.
to be fair, I've driven AT cars with paddles like this, but never a manual. But it's just a cool feeling and setup, as someone who's a fan of F1 cars; and F3- like cars like the BAC Mono. Being able to keep your hands on the wheel, and focus solely on the road at all times, while having quick, tactile shifts with the paddles is more appealing. But hey, if you like MT that's cool too. The gatekeeping from some MT people is so snobby and cringe though lol.

This car is a blast! You can also control it manually using the shifter, not just the paddle shifter on steering wheel. Notice the +/- on manual side of shifter. Granted they are reversed compared to a true sequential gear box, but does the job. Disable all restrictions, put it in track mode, and give it a whirl in manual using the “reversed” sequential manual shift function. And when in LA, auto, cruise, and eyesight will let you rest when in gridlock.

I bought my Track bRed GR86 Premium AT in July. I was looking for a manual but every dealership I talked with had a 4 to 6 month waiting list for a manual. Also any manuals that showed up on a dealers website were sold as soon as the dealership got the word it was coming. I could have waited but my car I was trading in would have cost me many hundreds of dollars to get inspected in August, it needed a full set of tires. But then this car that I bought showed up on a dealers website and it was everything I wanted exactly except for the auto trans. I called the dealer and was told it was available so my decision was wait six months or more and be offered a car that might not be all I wanted with a manual or get this car todayish, it was built but still in Japan awaiting it's boat ride to the US and wouldn't actually be here for about a month. I decided to get the car that was available and it's been awesome. Don't really miss the manual. It's got almost 6000 miles on it and I have no regrets. The only thing I need to do is disable the fake engine noise which I plan on doing this weekend.

I bought my 2016 BRZ Premium Auto in 2022. It was a great buy because it had only 13.8k miles on the odometer and a clean title. That and I wanted a first-gen because I absolutely hate the duck-bill spoiler the second-gen has. Even the extra horsepower and torque wasn't able to convince me to get a newer version.
I know how to drive a manual - I learned on an '80s Ford Probe. And in this car, in Manual mode with the paddle shifters, I get the control of shifting exactly when I want to, along with the feeling of being directly connected to the engine and wheels, all while not having to tap-dance with the pedals. It's beautiful. I like that you can get to 60MPH in second gear, as it's just under the redline with the 17" wheels and Yokohama AVID Ascend GT 215/45 tires that came on the car (yes, I know that they're not the super-wide rubber bands that everybody likes these days so people think they suck, but I don't care). The only time mine's not in Manual mode is when it's in Park or Reverse. And those tires are great even in Minnesota winters...
    My new transmission preferences:
    1. Paddle-shift Auto
    2. Manual
    3. Auto

I have the GT86 with an auto, had it for 2 years as well, the auto box is what i would expect of any car but rarely exists, when in manual it does not shift up for you, it will bash the limiter, it will shift down when it needs to if you "forget to" to save the engine, this car has kinda proved that you can have the same car, but shifting with paddles vs a stick is like chosing what steering wheel you play your racing simulators with.

It's automatic but at the same time you can revert to manual ?

You can manually shift the gears, where you're just asking the automatic transmission to shift at a specific time, or you can let it shift for you.

AT GR86 here. Got it for the automatic cruise control(ACC). And well.. its the least used thing in my car. I’ve used the backseats more than I’ve used the ACC 😂😂 that’s how fun this car is to drive. I’ve put 15k miles in it and I’ve used Cruise Control less than 5 times.
If you are getting AT for the automatic cruise control, please… please.. don’t. Get the MT.prob my biggest regret in life.

Little late to your question, but I actually traded in my 2020 Mazda 3 for an AT GR86. I don't really miss the Mazda at all for the most part. The 86 is a lot quicker, handles better, and is (in my opinion) better looking. The GR86 does have a noticeably cheaper interior than the Mazda 3 though, so if you're looking for a more premium cabin the Mazda would be the better option. The same goes for the audio system, Mazda's premium Bose system (if you were to go for a model with it included) is orders of magnitude better than the audio system included in the GR86. Really just comes down to whether or not you want a sports car that's built for driving pleasure and not a lot else. Otherwise i'd say go for the Mazda 3.

Enthusiasts have to remember that many of the manual cars they enjoy would be discontinued without the help of the majority of people buying the automatic versions. So enthusiasts, stop with the superiority complex.

As someone who has had 5 manual sports cars and does not at all mind driving a manual in traffic either, I admit that automatics are nice to have in sports cars.
The low weight and handling are still there, which is entirely why we get cheap and light weight sports cars. But removing the ability to shift doesn't take a lot out of the fun as people think. Depending on the automatic transmission used, you can still drift, you can still do burnouts, and you can still be very competitive on a track.
The main issue is only for track use. Most automatics are geared for economy and that's with the twins use. I think these deserved a DCT instead. But that would bring the cost higher and likely mess with the whole point of a light weight and cheap sports car.
As for the engine, i love the size, its just right for a budget sports car at this weight. But a boxer engine isnt great in a cheap sports car. An inline makes more sense. Its generally more reliable and in most cases its so much easier to work on solo. To anyone who says that it raises the center of gravity, most modern inlines are all alluminum with light weight plastic intakes. They are so light all-around that the difference is not noticable on or off the track.
It was a big deal only back when engines were still made of cast iron.

The best shifters is Honda, hands down, but manuals these days are SO SMOOTH, there’s nothing to really feel. “If you don’t have a 90’s or older Japanese car, you’re not a real car enthusiast” is just as bad as saying “if you don’t have a manual, your not a real car enthusiast”

The auto has taller gearing, both the differential and the overdrive are taller than the manual. This is one reason the auto gets better MPG than the manual, but is a tad slower 0 to 60. I would think the auto would also be a better highway cruiser, because it's turning almost a 1000 rpms less at 75 mph. The auto would be quieter and more relaxed at 75-80 mph, and not such an ass whip in stop and go traffic.

I owned nothing but manuals for 25 years. If i had space for 2 cars, one would be a fun manual weekender. My daily is also my fun car though so auto was the better choice. Sure driving a manual isn't that hard to do in traffic but it is more of a headache than driving in an auto. A good torque converter or dual clutch is also almost as much fun as a manual on a quiet back road.
Don't really care what other people say about my choice. Half of the ones who ask why I didn't get s manual drive autos themselves, and boring, non sporty SUVs at that.

UMM 37K!??!!!!!!!!!! 2022 Camaro LT1 A10s were 36790 which includes destination fee. Jokes on anyone paying that much for a n/a 4 cylinder with a poor modern day sports car automatic transmission today.
For anyone wonder the LT1 A10 comes standard with front Brembos, launch control, fancy traction control setting and performance pages, 20inch wheels, manual mode with quick shift paddles (hidden kick down switch with holding left paddle down or hitting accelerator for 1/2 second in sports mode), and staged upshifts in automatic mode along with a performance shift is active feature to hold revs when corning. Both power front seats, wireless apple carplay/android auto, good front bucket seats, remote start, automatic climate control, nice leather wrapped flat bottom steering wheel, and all LED lightning inside and out (except reverse lights). And even crazier is you use to be able to lease these cars for 300/month. They can also easily get 30-35mpg at 70mph. In the city its like 15 though which suck haha.
Yes insurance and gas is more, but overall way more car for your money. I mean an LT1 A10 traps 20mph more in the 1/4 mile than a slush box BRZ. I respect automatic BRZ but 37K is genuinely outrageous. At least get an Elantra N DCT for less. This car needs a DCT or a transmission which is similar in speed to the M6. The automatic version is so much slower and you can see how slow the shifts are in this video. For 37K before TTL way more fun cars to hustle down a back road.
