Thank you for this! Anytime I try to explain to my family why these games mean so much to me I usually just show them your videos. I can’t help but go back to ‘89 with memories of my cousin and I just playing Ninja Gaiden for hours and having a blast. Thank you!
PIN IT!!!!!!! THANK YOU! I'm always trying to evoke that feeling!
ofcourse its fun (here in europe it was released as shadow warriors. but there's another thing. if you have both games side by side. you hear a little different things. yes. the soundtrack. the n-a version has actualy a beat, but the european version doesnt. and the dreaded. dreaded move of them! act 6-2! oooh maaaaaaan! if you die there, you are send all the way back to 5-1! even if you have unlimited continues. but yes, fun vid. and this is the first time that i checked this. and the memories are flowing back again! borrowed this game from a friend (who has in 1993 moved to france) aaa the memories man hahahahahahaha he was my best friend at the time then.
When my parents split up .. this was the first nes game my dad bought me (cib) .. he died last month .. I played it recently for nostalgia.. the end scene after you beat the heart .... WOW that pulled on the heart strings ! Thank you very much for this video !
Thank you for sharing that. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. It's those memories, while difficult, that us going when life gets rough. NG will always be special to you in ways others will never know.
@@NESComplex thanks Chris I truly appreciate those kind words ! And of course the awesome content you produce for me and my family !
I'm sorry, my dad bought me some great nes/snes games and he just left us too😕
I'm sorry that happened to you
@@matthewlane518 god dammit didn’t come here to cry 😭
The cinematic scenes for me as a kid was so odd (but I loved it) Those cutscenes along with the ending to SMB2 always stick out in my mind.....in a awesome way! ♥️
SMB2 is still the BEST ending
Hey, $7.50 an hour was good money back in 1989 lol
THAT is a great point! I shouldve gone napoleon dynamite "thats like a dollar an hour"
This soundtrack is, indeed, unbelievably great. So emotional. Also, I just finished this whole video without looking at the screen.
Hahaha... now paint without looking at the canvas

You are the true voice of the nes..NEScomplex..your great 👍
Wouldn't that be a great job! "Voice of the NES" hmmmm I could go for that
I like your Monty Python reference. I remember my freshman year of college in 1999 beating this game in my dorm room crammed with 20+ people in it because no one believed I could do it
Legend!!
Epic!
I just beat this game like 8 years ago around this time. Their were days where my frustration was through the roof with this game then they were days where I was so close but he killed me at the last second before I could kill him. Many times sending me back to 6-1 where I had to go the dreaded 6-2 but today I finally beat him and what joy I felt after 24 years of playing this game I get to see the ending and the satisfaction of beating the game. :D I've already beaten Ninja Gaiden 2 last year and just beat it recently again now onto Ninja Gaiden 3.
I got good at 6-1 and 6-2 because it sent me back so many times. plus theirs a glitch where you can stock up on scrolls to beat jaquio 1st form but after that you have to beat 2nd form without them. But its easier to beat the 2nd form with out scrolls.
Congrats, dude! This is on my dead brother's video game bucket list. I have no idea if he beat, though. It's been 30 years, so... probably...?
How'd you make out with Ninja Gaiden 3? I just beat it and finished the trilogy once and for all. For me 3 was by far the hardest on the nes. I beat the first two games years ago and i can almost no death run the first game now but 3 was truly hard with the double damage and lack of continues
@@JBird401 3 was really hard especially the American version because of the limited continues the amount of damage you take I didn't get very far. Japanese version and I got farther all the way to the final boss but I didn't beat him I was kind of tired and decided to try again another day but I still haven't played it since LOL
@@BTLAGS i feel you. That's what happened to me too but i just picked it back up a week ago and managed to beat the north american version. Good luck
@@JBird401 give yourself a pat on the back and around of applause you accomplished few people have done. ninja gaiden 3 is up there in difficulty on the NES.
This was such an awesome game, and one that I only beat as an adult. I never knew that the end boss level restart was unintentional, until they decided to leave it in after all, haha. That's straight up mean, especially because you have to get past that one part in 6-2 every time (you know the one!). My favourite Ninja Gaiden game however is its sequel. The new power-ups did make the game a little easier, but it still had exciting levels, music, and very memorable cut-scenes.
So cruel to have to start back at 6-1 was just brutal. I would beat the 1st end boss then die and have to start at 6-1 then get all the way to the 2nd end boss beat it and die start back at 6-1 and then finally make it to the 3rd end boss with enough ninja power to beat it. I didn't know there were easier ways of beating it. Felt like I ran the Marathon 2hrs and 30 minutes of playing this game later VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 14 years old at the time.
Absolutely loved this game, even when cursing its difficulty. The short riff played at each act is as familiar as any music in a Mario or Zelda title.
And don't forget the death music is the exact same song played when you get a touchdown in Tecmo Bowl.
This is by far the best video I have ever seen about the original Ninja Gaiden. Being this is one of my favorite games on the NES, it was a joy to watch and I laughed out loud (in the best way possible) countless times. Nice work, man!
I remember buying this game at Toys R Us when it first came out, and spending many an hour playing it with my friends. I got very good at it and finished the game a number of times. In the days before the Internet, people would come over to my house just so they see the ending of the game. It was my claim to fame!
Another great video!!! I am SO ready for the next one. Keep putting them out man!
They're coming... little by little
This is a fantastic video! Loved the humor, and sharp editing. Also Sharp: that awesome black NES controller. Wish I had one of those. Thanks for making this.
Heck yes it is!!!!! A uterus huh... I can't unsee that now. Thanks
I was going through the "changing" book in science at the time.. no joke
It actually looks more like a bong
I was only brought up with Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. I never finished it as a kid, almost finished it as a young adult and did finally finish it as an adult. What a feeling. I also discovered something many might have missed. The music and cutscenes are great and the game is fun. I could just download I and III on a emulator but take my chance I'll one day find them for a decent price and then play them like they are supposed to. Great video as always!
3 can be a bit pricey that for sure
The real question is, Is this Channel Fun? The answer is yes! Making Thursdays something to look forward to.
You are the Tuesday of my week.
See any of your influence here "when two vowels go walking"
NESComplex oh, I did. 😂
Intro completely threw me off! It was perfect! Love the video as always my man! I'm grateful for your content
I enjoyed that too!
gotta mix it up! I wanted to try something new there
As many of my other favorite UA-camrs have started to call it quits, go on hiatus, or get tied up in scandal, I'm glad I've recently discovered your channel. You're a real pro and I love your take on things. Fewer and fewer people are making videos with this degree of substance, and I hope you keep it up for a while!
It's unfortunate whats happening in the UA-cam world... im glad youre enjoying my videos. i just want each one to be the best i can make it... whether anyone watches or not.... but im glad you do
I was having a crap day till I saw NESComplex uploaded a new video. Thank you for saving my day.

Ninja Gaiden will forever be my favorite NES game. Fantastic video as always!
You are mine.
@@adam_loooong1735 haha
I loooooove ninja gaiden! pure action in a plastic shell
I always felt NG3 was the hardest of the NES trilogy.
My favorite will always be NG2.
The music was the best.
And that opening cutscene never gets old.
2 is definitely the BEST!
NESComplex I agree, I like all 3 NES titles, but Ninja Gaiden 2 is my favorite. The best music, the level design was laid out better, the elements like the wind, the ice, the lightning flashing, the waterfall streams, the cinema scenes were better.
I also think Ninja Gaiden 2 was a little fairer than the original or NG3 on the difficulty curve, but Ninja Gaiden 2 was still no "walk in the park" to beat
NG2 was great.
The stormy night with the lighting had amazing music.
The only channel I give a like before I even watch the video.
Thanks 🙏
*watches and unlikes* 😭
This is not a new revelation, but: your humor is so on point - it simultaneous is front and center as well as behind the scenes in its subtlety. Hats off as always Complex - I know you are back - but gosh you were really missed!
Im back for sure... and its good to see your comments Adam. Thank you for the kind words. I love making these videos whether others watch them or not
You are on a roll these days! The production quality is amazing; so much complementary information. Keep it easy though. 😇
Complex keep on churning!
Thank you as always, Complex. Your material always brightens my "my time". Have a fantastic day, sir :)
Absolutely another fine review, always enjoying your work @NESComplex, keep it up.
Loved this review Chris. You are the Gaming Historian for the NES. We can see how much of your heart and soul you put into each video. You’ve been killing it lately! I absolutely love Nina Gaiden and I have all 3 for the NES.
I'm a History teacher actually... When i started in 2011, i searched the name gaming historian but it was taken.... lol little did i know
NESComplex that’s awesome. When I graduated from high school I wanted to be a high school teacher. I went into another major but I still love history. Yeah your videos are so well done.
This was the first game I ever beat at 6 years old. It was one of two games I had (the other being Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt) at the time. When your gaming life begins with Ninja Gaiden, not even Dark Souls phases you.
I call shenanigans! 😜😜😜
Great vid! Ah, the memories. Hard but great game. Awesome story line and cinematics. Getting through the stages was difficult (freaking birds!). The jump n' slash could kill most bosses in 1 to 3 hits. Running the game on one life was a big feat. You needed stage memory, quick and multiple slashing: mid-air in both directions, off the wall, off the jump etc., and knowing the special powers.
Really like the channel! These are some very interesting videos! Keep up the good work!!👊😎
For the life of me, I can't figure out why you don't have over a million subs. Your channel is a hidden gem!
Awesome review of this classic game! It really rekindled my nostalgia for this one. Thank you!
My brother picked this game as his birthday gift one year. We took the price tag to a window in the front of Toys R Us where a young gamer had what I seen as the dream job of cashiering all video games.
Love your videos man!!
Wonderfully done, Chris!
I remember beating this game late at night. I must have gone through the last level at least 20 times, but I was determined not to give up. I was pumped so full of adrenaline when I finally beat it, I couldn't sleep and stayed up the rest of the night celebrating my victory.
Good review. Please do more Ninja Gaiden games! 😎
This game introduced me to frustration when I was a kid.
30+ years and I still haven’t beaten this game. I’ve made it to Jacquio a couple of times, but I could never pull myself back together when I died and had to go all way back to the castle roof to start again.
But all of the stuff you mentioned was spot on. It’s one of my favorite NES games of all time next to TMNT 2 & Super Mario 3.
At one point I did some casual speedrunning of this game and was able to beat the game in under 24 minutes. Learning the trigger points for enemies was obviously the most important part. One of the things I learned was that enemies also have despawn points as well. The most useful time to understand this was the level 6-2B (or C...the one that is straight to the right) screen. The old hag that spawns on the single space will spawn and move backwards. If you trigger her spawn and stop immediately, she will back off the screen and despawn. As long as you don't move left or get pushed left, that space becomes easy to navigate.
As for the birds, most times dodging them is preferable to killing them. Let them spawn, zip towards you, then dodge. Their momentum will carry the birds far to the side. If you move forward at the same time, they will go off screen thus despawning.
I actually had a section about despawning and slash-cancelling ( which is how i beat the final boss) but i cut it out for pacing... but sheesh 24 minutes!!!! damn! Props!
I can't believe you got actual footage of the designers laughing about leaving in the mistake! Those jerks!
I remember back in 1989 my cousin and I fighting Jaquoiooioo and dying, and then having to start over at 6-1. And I think we stared in shock and silence for about 2 hours, shut off the game, and to this day I haven't tried to beat the game again.. I was THAT pissed! lol.
But great memories of the cinematic scenes and music!! So good! Great video :D
lol... well its not real Tecmo footage but it cracked me up watching them laugh
@@NESComplex lol I knew it wasnt really them was just messin. I was LOLing at that!
This was a seriously killer vid brother. Keep the quality coming. 😲🖒
Amazing review. And thank you from all of us for not using the clip from the Wizard where the guy yells Gaiden... Low hanging fruit there.
I even had the novel of this game when I was a kid. It was like the first book I ever remember reading for fun, after that Ninja Turtles one called "Buried Treasure".
Well, another video means my day is made. Thank you.
You're the BEST Wheels8504!!! Your comments always make my day too
@@NESComplex Really looking forward to the next video as always kind sir. Maybe updated Nintendo collection videos in the future? Whatever you do, keep them coming. Enjoy your day.
The strategy for the final boss was to pick the right power up before the meeting.
The first meeting you needed the fire deal that goes up.
Then after the win. Take a knee and go back to 6-1. Then the next time get the jump spin attack.
If you can't beat the final guy, just repeat with the spin jump attack.

I remember the ice level being hard when I first got it.
The flying Ninjas with stars were crazy.
It's easily my top 20 best NES game.
Awesome review! Entertaining & spot on!
Thank you strikezone
This channel just gets better and better
Thank you! I just enjoy making videos and if i can make people laugh or remember their past, then i've done my job
Great review. Loved it.
LOL idk why but that part with the Japanese guys just laughing at the code bug cracked me up much more than it should have. Another good video! Nice to have a praise video now and then.
maybe its bad to laugh at my own jokes but i love that part too... i have that single clap sound lol
This was majestic. Thank you! I really enjoyed this
Haha! Thank you!!
I remember my brother and I read about Hans Lo in Nintendo Power in the 80s.
Such a classic. Awesome video as always.
Thank you!
My very first NES game hold i always loved the star wars element in it...
Love this game so much. I use it in clase as a first example of narrative in the media. Back in the day I coul finish the whole game with my first life, now 30 years later I'm training to do it again.
I love that game as a kid play it none stop and man it still hard lol
Great review once again, I love the is it fun series 😎
Tommie!!!! Thanks bud! You're the best man
Just bought one with the box for $10 to $15 a few months ago. 80's and early 90's we definitely had a ninja craze!
It’s definitely fun! Great video about it.. funny observations too.
I just completed this difficult game while running 🏃 at the same time.. yes, your read that right.. lol I hope you see it, Mr. Complex! 2 player Contra is coming next... just trying to bridge wellness and gaming a little while having fun. It’ll keep going from here..
Outside of the brutal difficulty, this game is nearly flawless.
Been waiting all day to watch this one!
I hope it was worth the wait
I beat this game as kid along with Mike Tysons Pounchout. I remember them being pretty difficult but being poor I had no choice but to keep playing these same games. Now ( at 43 ) I feel like an NES god for completing them and other hard titles .
Awesome, nostalgic look at one of my favourite 8 bit games.
Im glad you liked it!
It was named Shadow Warriors in Australia also
So good omg!! Thank you
Thank you very much!
yes. new favorite channel.
Thank you Brody
Damn man this is an awesome video and series! Loved Ninja Gaiden as a kid but I could never make it really far because of the difficulty. Half the scenes in this video I’ve seen for the first time because I never made it to those levels (acts).
Oh my God...this game broke me when I was a kid. My parents took it away from me as I was attempting to destroy my television with a controller.
Coming home one day me and my mom caught my dad in the living room. He was shaking, gibbering like a madman, cursing, and had a death grip on the controller.
Lol my mom banned him from playing that game and my parents ungrounded me on the condition I wouldn't play that anymore.
Decades later...I play it to this day and still shake with a primal rage after that DAMNED HALLWAY!! THOSE G09AMN3D FLYING NINJAS! I HATE YOU YOU STUPID NINJAS!
Great video by the way.
Thanks!!!
The nostalgia is strong with this one! Plus the humor has me LOL quite a few times :-D
I haven't beaten a ton of games, but I can proudly say that I did beat this one. Tough, tough game!
and THAT is why we beat it! The sense of pride and accomplishment
Damn what a game ... I remember playing this when i was like 7 years old.
As a kid, I only played this a handful of times from rentals and friends owning it. It wasn’t until just the other day I actually sat down and beat it. And I didn’t think the difficulty was that bad, not like what it was built up to be. A lot of memorization, but that’s typical in NES games. That is, until the last level and the boss battles. One death - not even a game over- and I have to go all the way back? That’s ridiculously punishing! It doesn’t make things harder, it just wastes time. If it followed the death mechanics of every other level, I’d have no issues with this game. But I have a hard time recommending it to anyone who looks to actually complete their games. Regardless, great video, Mr. Complex! ;)
Thank you! The game is ruthless... but very satisfying
One of the best games ever made.
Arguably the best composed soundtracks ever in any video game, not the best quality obviously 'cause of systems limitations, but wow (any sound track that sticks in ur head for years is pure gold).
This was also the first NES game i ever bought (not including Mario-1 & Duck Hunt combo that came with the system).
I love this game so much, i spend countless hours playing & mastering it. =)
Irene Law is proud of this video
She kissed me awkwardly afterward...weird hair and all
This game drove me crazy growing up. I never really enjoyed it because it was so hard. I never could get the wall jump mechanic down properly.
Oh the rage quits. I was in the Army at the time. That game gave me the 1000 yard stare and we weren't at war. The end cut scene was the best I've seen at the time. Very good game!
Awesome video Complex! I have no idea how I managed to make it to the final boss as a kid. I had to leave my NES on for days straight to do it though. lol I remember being really pissed after losing to the boss and being sent way back. Never ended up beating the final boss until years later with an emulator and using a save state right before the boss. So can I say I actually beat the game since I'm just circumventing a bug using modern technology? Hmmm...
Is it fun? ...If your idea of fun is getting caned by bamboo then jumping into rubbing alcohol than yes, yes it is. Seriously though, maybe the first few levels are fun, I certainly have nostalgia for the first third of the game, but once I finally got to the end boss I was so exhausted from the abuse I could only beat him using save states, and even then, what a chore it was. It's like a tale of two games. First half is a fun challenge, second half is getting your teeth drilled when the Novocaine failed to work.
Hahaha! You crack me up! Well said... well i watched some strategy videos about the final bosses, but it still took several tries and level six got easier as i played it. Plus i beat it years ago so there must have been some muscle memory there too
NESComplex : I hear ya. I’m that way with Mega Man 2. I love it and have tons of muscle memory with the boss patterns and such. When I recommend it to others they are like “no way, Mega Man games are notoriously hard.” We all have our abusive game relationships. “Well it’s really a great game once you get to know it.” 🤣 Keep up the great content. I love your videos.
Back in the day I finished Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 with the controller held upside down. I also got my name in Nintendo Power for finishing Ninja Gaiden 2.
I just beat this game for the first time today. I put it on my SNES Classic and the Save States meant I didn’t turn the game off after I died at the Final Bosses and went all the way back to 6-1. Great game and great review!
are your thumbs muscular now?
Ninja Gaiden NES is my #1 favorite game of all time. Great gameplay, great story, great music, quick and to the point. Everything I could ever want out of a game. A true classic.

With other territories calling it Shadow Warriors, I kind of have to wonder if Shadow Warrior on the Build Engine was renamed in those territories.
Great watch Chris
So glad you enjoyed it
Is interesting I've been playing this game on my nes classic the last couple of days, I didn't get a chance to play it much back in the day, so I'm trying to beat it now & it is a lot of fun. Just gotta get good at timing your jumps. Great game.

dude very very good video, one of my favs for sure. The best thing about ninja gaiden is the controls. They are some of the best on the system and with those controls makes the fight possible. I always say this game really makes u feel like ur a ninja!!!!!
