  • The Evolution of Ninja Gaiden | Series Analysis. The Ninja Gaiden series is an iconic series of sidescrolling platformers on the NES. Ninja Gaiden has inspired countless platformers over the years, including some of my favorite games of all time. But how did that original series grow, improve, and evolve with each new iteration? In this video, I play through and analyze the series from that perspective. What did Tecmo do to change up the Ninja Gaiden series in each game? Please join me as we take a look at the Evolution of Ninja Gaiden.

Wow, what a great retrospective. I've felt the tube has been a tad bit lacking lately so i used the trusty search engine and found your vid. This is one of my favorite series in my collection, the first being my favorite. I'm glad to hear that you didn't have nostalgia hovering over your opinion as you stated you didn't grow up playing these games, definitely can help with solidifying an honest and objective opinion. This can be difficult to find but welcoming. You blew my mind when you stated, the 3rd is set between 1 and 2. I've been playing games for close to 40 years and got these during there initial release. I had no idea and will have to look into this more. I do truly appreciate the story but then again, the nostalgia and my age demo my be the culprit as I was born in the early 80's. Great vid and im going to sub to check out the rest of your catalog. Love the mix of reality and editing with the birds. Those birds are relentless. ☝️🙌✨️

Yyeessss I use save states on a game-by-game basis and set my standards to make the game playable respect my time but not break the game. I think ur choice where and how to save was spot on.

Just so you know, often nes games were made harder for their US release so that kids renting them couldn't just beat them super quickly and return the game. Castlevania 3 is another famous example of this, although it still has infinite continues, thank god, there are a lot of changes that make it harder than the japanese version.

But the original Castlevania is amazing

I would love to see the evolution of Final Fantasy or Phantasy Star, especially in terms of their storylines. It's quite interesting how quickly console RPGs went from 'grind a lot and defeat the bad guy' to telling full-fledged stories with developed characters.

Final Fantasy is one I really want to do. Only issue is the hundreds of hours of gameplay that'd be required. Even if I didn't have that pesky job of mine, it would take me absolutely forever to get it done.
That being said, a full analysis of FF currently does not exist on YT as far as I can tell (probably because I'm the only person masochistic enough to consider it). What I may end up doing is playing through the series casually, recording footage and taking notes as I go while still doing my other videos as usual. Then, once I get through them I can focus on making it into a video. It'd take a year or more, but I'm seriously considering it

Coyote time is a bad idea. To prove my point I refer to the game Prince of Persia in which you have to press the button slightly early before reaching the edge. Is that mindset is incorporated coyote time is rendered useless.
While there are some games that have horrible controls bad collision detection and other issues I still don't think coyote time is a good way to fix them.

I've never played any Ninja Gaiden- revenge of Sinobi on sega was somewhat similar though, I can't remember if that one attempted a story at all. One of my friends always uses Ninja Gaiden II as a deffault example of a stupidly hard game but I don't know if he meant the original or from the 2000s series. I always reference the trope of character not falling off a cliff until they realise they're walking on thin air and I had no idea there was a name for it! Heyyy you flipped the bird at some birds! what a great visual pun

I definitely need to play Shinobi at some point. I've heard a lot of good things about it and if it's like NG, I'm sure I'll have a good time.
You should have seen my dad's face when I went up to him and said "I need to swear at your chickens for a video." I knew I was going to do that bit before I even finished the first game

@@Adze 'I need to swear at your chickens for a video' not a phrase you hear every day, probably every other day...at least once a week

Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox 360 / One is "stupidly difficult" if you play on the higher difficulties: Path of the Mentor and Path of the Master Ninja. The NES versions aren't absurd. They're very difficult, but PotMN on Vanilla NG2 is absolutely ridiculous yet fun as hell. And it's this way for more reasons than you'll probably want to read.

Great video. There’s no reason to apologize for not putting up with a game’s time wasting bullshit lmao. Especially when the industry in the subsequent decades has moved essentially completely away from those design decisions

Glad you liked it. And yeah, I don't feel at all bad about using save states at the final bosses. I just wanted to get a quick dig at the vocal minority of retro gaming elitists out there (you know, the type who would give me shit for not using original hardware on a CRT for this video lol)
Realistically, I could have hidden it with editing if I wanted to. Same deal with the fact that I used a 99 lives cheat in NG3. I just wanted to be a cocky little shit

another horrible example of lack of coyote time is Disruptor on the PS1, which is way worse because of it being a fiest person shooter, so good luck precision platforming when you can't even see your feet!
