inversions are when the root note (bass note) changes order but if it's just the top notes that are inverting, then it's called a voicing. also, the third chord wasn't a 9th because you doubled the octave as the top note instead of making it a D# so it's just a 7th chord. in tertiary harmony, chords are made by stacking 3rds (minor or major, 3 and 4 semitones). but anyway you were spot on about not worrying about names as much as feeling. just pointing it out so others can learn not criticizing
I was gonna point this out too. His tips are pretty much sound advice, but as a music theory nerd, I think it's important to use proper terms. It makes research so much easier and you get to actually discuss music composition across genres easily.
Absolutely, there's nothing wrong with what he's doing but what he's saying - so much misinformation. I know what he's doing is for beginners but if anyone watching ever wanted to learn about music to expand their knowledge they will be at a disadvantage after listening to this. I'm not really trying to have a go at him, as I said, what he's doing is grand. It's just that the misinformation will ultimately do more harm than good. Which I assume is not what he wants.
yeah it's a bit shaky, it's clear he meant extensions but still confusing - also no idea what he means by "pentatonic note" - I guess he meant a third that's in scale (but it's not a pentatonic scale so quite strange phrasing)?
Lil tip for beginners - easiest way to make RnB melodies is using the 7th chord mentioned at around 2:47 and they work, in theory, by combining a major and a minor to create that Drake style melody
You're most no-nonsense theory / fl tutorial maker out there bro. As someone who struggles w ADHD, i rly appreciate someone who doesn't pad their videos with filler. I always thought basic music theory was daunting only because how it was explained to me, you make it look easy to understand so thank u~ Keep grinding g 🙏
Music theory is simple really. All chords come from a scale so CMajor scale is CDEFGAB all the white keys. So to create a chord u Take the First note which is C and then u take the third note which is E and then u take the fith note which is G. CEG is C Major now to make more chords u go to the second degree of the scale and think of that note as the first note. Which is D and then u do the same again 1ST note is D then u go to the third note up from D which is a F. And then the fifth note from D which is A. DFA creates D minor then you do the same process from the next note of the scale which is E and treat that note as your first note and then take the third note of the scale and then the fifth note of the scale EGB creates E minor then u move up to the next note F and do the same process FAC F major chord. Next note G same process GBD G major. Next note A. ACE A minor chord next note B BDG creates B half diminished. Then give every chord a number C Major is the 1 chord then D minor 2 chord carry on up to seven . Then create a chord progression in C Major so I choose A 1 4 5 progression in C Major. Chords will be CMajor F major G Major. Just try different progressions to your taste. If u want a 7 chord u add the 7th note to any of the chords making it a 4 note chord so. Cmaj 7 is C Maj with the added 7 note from the note C. Which is a B note added to the chord. So u do the same process from DMinor find the 7 note from D which is C so DMinor 7 is DFAC do the same process to the rest for all 7 chords in the key of C. Quick way to find the 7 it is the note behind the first note of you chosen chord
one thing i recommend is taking a look at every chord progression from major and minor and them using them in the way you want. you can do some pretty cool chord progressions.
Glad I ran across this video. I have been trying this for years but never had the knowledge to pull it off to this extent. I've been close but I realize now that I should slow my steps down and find the the sound I'm looking for
As soon as you said "if you want to use any of these sounds you can download them free with a link in the description", *I subbed* Edit: LOL you made that a requirement for the download anyway. Haha clever...
Just use Pattern Generator in the free Waveform. It has mode for chords, bass, arp and melodi. If you use other DAW just copy the midi pattern from Waveform to you preferred DAW.
2:00 Moving the root down an octave vs moving the 2nd and 3rd up and octave is essentially the same thing, it just changes whether your moving the whole thing up or down an octave
watching your videos makes me wanna get up and go straight to my desk, but then i smoke a blunt, then 2, then 3, then the sun goes down n my girl want me to lay w her. rip
Btw whenever I say inversion, I’m really talking about an extension

also just a pet peeve but I always get a bit annoyed when trap producers call chords the "melody"
my dad is an absolute theory goon and he would have wanted to jump out of a window listening to this video.
