I think the walking is partly due to the killer pads pro he's wearing ^_^ best cushioning around, but you can't really straighten your leg comfortably. He's still pretty spry, even now after that nasty fracture finally healed, and this video was really shot during a 6-week period. But yeah.. the pain tolerance this guy has is admirable.
He’s not old! 50 is (was) young. He’s kept his focus, his self belief, his skills and his courage. I’m 61, had a total left hip replacement in 2017. Was told at the time (in 2017) I needed my right hip doing. I still haven’t had it done because I wanted to max out my left hip. I need two shoulders replacing, my right hip, and last June (2022) I had 5/7 cervical vertebra reprofiled and 2 discs C5/C6 and C6/C7 removed. By Sept 2022 I was back on a football (soccer) pitch playing with men half my age. Some of the players were signed to Premier League teams as youth players and I’m still scoring, and matching them sprinting. They call me Robo-Pete and are all inspired by my not giving up, going through the pain barrier and still getting stuck in at 61! Now, why do I need all this surgery……skateboarding. I’m not pretending I could even tie Tony Hawk’s shoes, but back in the day, I was on a British G&S team that toured California and competed against Stevie Caballero at Campbell, Skatepark (he was skating for Santa Cruz) Eddie Elguera (inventor of the foot plant) the Z-Boys. (I skated with them at Arrow Wolverhampton and Skateside Kettering). I was the fastest thing on 4 wheels at tight slalom. Tony Alva,, Jay Adams, Chris Chaput etc, saw me beat Bobby Piercy at Stateside. He was on his Turner, I was on a board I designed and my woodwork teacher made using individual willow, ash core laminates with an oak outer facing. My manager bet his £1000 I’d beat him….and I did. I stayed with Paul Sims (Tom Sims’ dad) and George Powell in Santa Barbara, just before he started Powell-Peralta. Now I’ve still got the Ray Bones Rodrigues 30in deck, with ACS Lites (the first magnesium trucks) and Powell mini-cubes. The wheels and deck were given to me by George himself, and Paul Sims gave me a pile of stuff too. Skateboarding died out in the UK with the parks closing. I was going to uni and it all ended. It was a fantastic time for me, but my legacy is arthritis and a lot of fantastic memories of skating with and against the top pros. I came across this video and I thought of all the crazy things I used to do……they’re nothing to what TH and the current very skaters can do. Hats off to TH, a legend, an inspiration and it seems, a nice guy too.
I'd say he got 51 tricks at age 50. I don't think anyone's ever tried a kickflip pole hug before. And I doubt he's ever going to try that again! :) Glad he came out all right on it.
In another video talking about some of his worst injuries, he said that the fact that he almost destroyed himself but managed to catch onto the pole and go towards the up-ramp behind the vert ended up saving him big time, and it was really memorable.
Thank you guys for putting that there, I already had my "CC" button turnt on already and didn't expect the name of the name of the tricks to pop up, smart move's, I no way more street skateboarding tricks than vert skateboarding tricks. This really helped me know more about vert tricks. Thank you RIDE Channel for uploading some of the best skateboarding footage in the world. Mad love, Chris
Tony's just got such a proper style, he doesn't do any trick half-ass! Props to him still reinventing himself after all these years of being one of the absolute spearheads of vert skating!
Hearing him say "this is the last time i'll do some of these".... holy shit that got me emotional. This dude has been a hero of mine since I was a little kid trying to drop in on a half-pipe without eating shit. What a legend.
"some of these (tricks) are the last time i do them. but its ok, we had a good run." as a soon to be 43 year old street skater working my way back from a ruptured achilles, hearing this gave me a sense of comfort in knowing that there are tricks i will never be able to do again. i am very thankful for all of the years skating (since 1987) and the years still ahead of me (hopefully to 50). thank you Tony for always being a pillar of skateboarding that still inspires me to push.
Rufusdos everything i read said that your tendons get tighter as you get older so its more important to stretch them to keep them flexible. my injury was due to my board smacking my AT, effectively slicing it, so there wasnt really anything i couldve done to prevent it, other than not skating that day. but let me know if you were looking more for rehab exercises and I'll reply again with the things i did in PT.
I'd be very grateful if you could. I've had reccurring strains in my back-foot achilles due to repeating the same ollie-based tricks and not warming up properly.
Jared Genesis yea cool and all that but you are just another 'dumbass' on the internet put a clip on youtube of you skating vert and post the link on here
Thanks for sharing your skating with us. As a 41 year old from San Diego, I have been watching you most of my life. Thanks for signing my board in El Paso this year. Don't worry, I am skating it. Not hanging it up.
Adapted MC I try and support all the channela I watch. But idea of just progressing a little each day really hit home with me. Sometimes in our 40s we become content. I am fighting against that.
It was a good run. For 36 years, he's been rising through the skateboarding ranks, becoming one of the most influential, one of the most well known, and one of the most badass skaters ever. 3 years ago, he landed his final 900. At age 48. We are all going to miss him when he stops skating completely.
He's the reason I started skating.i saw him once and asked for his autograph.he said"let me land this trick real quick"and he did and he did.thanks so much tony!
derekperc it's because skate companies would fire guys when they got into their mid 20s because they were "too old" for the company... It's weird to think that way, but that's how it was, and in some still is.
No, it's not still like that at all. It's true that it use to be up until the early 90s. Back then companies were kicking guys off by their mid 20s because skateboarding was progressing so fast that most weren't able to keep up. Street skateboarding was something brand new and new tricks were constantly being invented. Guys at a pro level weren't able to keep up with the young bucks that were hungry and constantly pushing the "sport". All that changed around the time Mike Carroll and Rick Howard left World Industries to start up Girl Skateboards. From that point on the industry changed and adult pros weren't instantly done away with once they got to a certain point anymore. From that point on, it pretty much became totally about marketability. If you still have a strong fan base and your boards, shoes, etc are still selling then you can stay pro for years, decades even. There are several pros from the 90s that are still pros today and they're well into their 40s.
2:49 - 2:54 almost felt like Tony did this for me. Literally my THREE ALL TIME FAVOURITE TRICKS CONSECUTIVELY from Heelflip Varial Lein variations to the Varial McTwist. This is so inspiring and profound to me. Tony - For a non-skater, it's crazy how much I look up to you. You influenced me in so many ways from my varied music tastes (I can go from Public Enemy to The Ramones to Nas to Ozomatli at the drop of a hat), sense of fashion, humour... So much. I never was a good skater, but I love and appreciate this culture to my dying breath. Although Breaking (Bboying), Boxing, Basketball and Music are my main hobbies - Skating truly was my first fascination. I owe that to Uncle Tony and Rodney Mullen. Peace.

The last clip of him chucking his helmet is sums up this whole video. Struggling to do 50 tricks and land them take a hella bad slam then landing the last one. That’s relief and all the rage and exhaustion put into that. I’ve been there and have done that. Most satisfying thing to do after a battle.
Even attempting those tricks at 50 is a feat in its own. Yeah when your 12 yrs old weigh a buck o five, limber, good bones, developing muscle structure it’s a no brainer. But for him to even ride a 1/2 pipe in his 50’s is simply remarkable. I grew up watching Tony hawk and the Powell Peralta team, ( look it up) as I to was riding 1/2 pipes and going to skate parks at that same time frame. Those were the good old days.
The final scene reminds me of the final scene from the breakfast club where Jud Nelson punches the air. Such an epic contribution to the art of skateboarding, and still pulling some madness at 50? Nuts and very special Thanks Tony

Hats off to TH, a legend, an inspiration and it seems, a nice guy too.
next up on the list - Tony Hawk does The 900 at 900 years old lmao
Funny he was gonna try the 900! Real talk check out his interview on the 9 club!
Free like for you brudny.
I laughed at this one. No joke.
Lol
And after that 1080 at 1080 years old and so on...
I'd say he got 51 tricks at age 50. I don't think anyone's ever tried a kickflip pole hug before. And I doubt he's ever going to try that again! :)
Glad he came out all right on it.
In another video talking about some of his worst injuries, he said that the fact that he almost destroyed himself but managed to catch onto the pole and go towards the up-ramp behind the vert ended up saving him big time, and it was really memorable.
Had to like so it wasn't 666
Click the "CC" button for an overlay of the trick names and the years Tony created them.

Why haven't you said that before i watched the video!
Haha was just about to ask that. Nailing it.
He was like building up a very large special meter.
This comment deserves more likes.
Then he bailed on #49 and blew it... so tragic...

LOL Yep
I've never skated and I know nothing about skating but anyone can instantly tell that this guy is a legend
He is the sport itself

So, here he is. Getting older all the time, but feeling younger in his mind.
Solid reference
He seems pretty at peace and satisfied though, I have a feeling aging isn't going to bring him down even with his young mind

Or slooooowly going... CrAzY!! Woooo, He rocks!
Tony's just got such a proper style, he doesn't do any trick half-ass! Props to him still reinventing himself after all these years of being one of the absolute spearheads of vert skating!
Fred Zeppelin exactly! 540 stale, all he had to do was go straight up and down but instead he threw it across that massive channel!
I feel your pain. It gets harder and harder to balance work and life with skating...urgh. How his body carries on I have no idea!!!
Its all about having fun
JFn Cho dude, any tips on keeping Achilles strong?
Rufusdos everything i read said that your tendons get tighter as you get older so its more important to stretch them to keep them flexible. my injury was due to my board smacking my AT, effectively slicing it, so there wasnt really anything i couldve done to prevent it, other than not skating that day. but let me know if you were looking more for rehab exercises and I'll reply again with the things i did in PT.
I'd be very grateful if you could. I've had reccurring strains in my back-foot achilles due to repeating the same ollie-based tricks and not warming up properly.
Smooth as butter, what a style!
Smooth was the first thing I thought of.
I remember in the 80's he was totally criticized for his style.
Are you kidding me!!??? Tony Hawk is 50yrs old!!!?? And a 50yr old can throw down like that!!!!!!!!

Jared Genesis yea cool and all that but you are just another 'dumbass' on the internet put a clip on youtube of you skating vert and post the link on here

A short list.
what a legend! 3:13 he pulled a 720 and bailed threw the gap and the first the he shouts is: "YESS"
It was a good run. For 36 years, he's been rising through the skateboarding ranks, becoming one of the most influential, one of the most well known, and one of the most badass skaters ever. 3 years ago, he landed his final 900. At age 48. We are all going to miss him when he stops skating completely.
He is the most famous skateboarder of all time, without a doubt.

He's the reason I started skating.i saw him once and asked for his autograph.he said"let me land this trick real quick"and he did and he did.thanks so much tony!
"Lets try a new one, I can still move" What a man.
Continuously an inspiration to us all. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone in their 20s claim they were “too old to skate”
derekperc it's because skate companies would fire guys when they got into their mid 20s because they were "too old" for the company... It's weird to think that way, but that's how it was, and in some still is.
I believed the same thing as a teenager in the 90s. Then I saw so many pros who were older than me keep going and going.
The guy's literally a living legend.

Peace.

I knew it was The Clash !! Just needed the title... Thanks, dude.

All those guys were epic. Some we never saw on video. I'd say Tony is the goat - much like Kelly in surfing, or MJ in b ball. There would not have been a lot of what Tony did without Mike McGill. Cab and burnquist for sure. Neil Blender, etc. Danny way. But still, Mike is the unsung hero. For all those extreme air tricks. We should be thanking him more for his contributions. As much as I love Tony, I have never heard him thank Mike.
