Searching for larger Crystals - Digging Quartz Crystals.

  • The search for quartz crystals continues as I hope to find larger crystals by digging further into the rock and vein material. I managed to find one larger crystal but more digging will be needed to tell if there are more to be found.
The crystals are in a vein seam that cuts through the aplite rock along with small intrusions and veins of pegmatite. As I dig further in this video, the seam is starting to pinch out. However, there are smaller veins scattered in the rock with random pockets of crystals occurring. The larger crystal found in this video appears to be from a random crystal pocket zone that formed in the aplite rock.
I hope you enjoy this video.

The rounded rocks are from old river beds, flooding. Love the crystals. Take them home and spray them off. Wrap them to protect them while you are out.

You need a big scrub brush with plastic bristles to clean the walls of the hole so you can see where to dig.

That would have been helpful. I'll have to get one next time I dig in a big hole like this again.

Its nice that you have a spot to hit up like that after work.

It was but now I cant get up to it until the high fire danger is down. They closed the gate.

Oh man, if I had a spot like that close by, I would be there every day, my wife would be so mad. I look forward to hopefully rockhound with you someday!

I hope the spot continues to produce more and hopefully larger crystals. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get back up there because they have it all shut down due to the wildfire danger. And I would be up to go rockhounding one of these days with you.

my guess in regards to the rounded rock is that the "hardrock" is actually just compacted alluvial material and a river deposited them there 🤔

    • @GeoForge
      @GeoForge  2 роки тому

There is hard rock just about a foot or two down in the hole. The crystal veins can be fallowed vertically from the hard rock into the upper and lower layers of the soil which shows that the rock had a lot of time to weather. The rounded stones are all most quartz. It seems like alluvial material and that would make the most sense.

@@GeoForge the only other explanation that I can think of is that the quartz vein intruded in to a diamictite and thats where the rounded rocks come from. not impossible but far more unlikely 😂

Enjoying the videos and the depth you go into.
Will a vein with good white/milky crystals lead to clearer crystals or will it likely just be full of white?
    Good luck out there, cheers.

Maybe a dumb question but I'm fairly new at rock hounding. I found an area with what looks like 2-3 milky quartz veins. Does these milky veins lead to crystal points? Cuz I've only dug maybe a foot in a small area and so far it's just milky chunks.

Quartz veins can have crystals in them but not all quartz veins will have crystals. If there are no signs of crystals forming or trying to form, then its probably best to move on to a different location. Sometimes, there may be small crystal pockets within large quartz veins but they are likely not worth your time trying to find unless they are already visible and have crystals large enough for your liking. Crystal formation in veins and other rocks can be a complicated process but if the vein was emplaced at a greater depth and pressure in the earth, this makes it more difficult or impossible for large crystals/pockets to form.

Thnx GeoForge. I'm fairly new. I keep finding small veins in the mountain here, but its in a shale sandy kinda dirt. So it's mostly milky. And the few spots that were clear keep breaking to pieces before its even out of the ground. Maybe if I dig deeper? Or find another mountain.

Must of been river run at some point or old tailings pile...

    • @GeoForge

I've broken a few of them open, most are quartz stones and I have found some of them in the vein quartz.
