- Looking for a way to go Montana agate rock hunting, even when the river is high? In this video, I show you my method for finding publicly accessible lands where you can find rocks. After going over the process, I take you to three different public access sites I have found through online research. Come share the journey!

So lovely to see parts of America that the regular tourists doesn’t see and to find rocks and fossils in spectacular countryside also to see cactus flowering in the wild a feast for the eyes !
It really is beautiful!
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Immersion into the geological and human activity history of a site is half the fun of our hobby!!!
I agree!
Oops, I already commented, but I wanted to add the nature shots - flowers, hillside, meadow - were awesome to see. Thanks for no dead cow shots! ROCK ON!! 😂👍🏻🪨⛏️
If you look carefully, you can see them down in the creek. Ewww!
@@KatyDidRocks 🐄 🙈 coverings eyes... 😂👍🏻
Thank you for taking us outside. Beautiful area.
Thanks for watching!
That was a very informative video. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely wild cactus flowers. Nice agates. Thanks for educating us on researching maps online. Thanks Kate. This is a must watch.
Thank you!
Loved the green agate!
Me too!
I really enjoyed this rock hunt as you didn't just show the beautiful rocks you found. Thanks for keeping it real by showing a bit of the struggles while rockhounding. I can relate! It was definitely a great day!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
Thank you! I do sometimes get distracted by filming rocks and forget to show the beautiful spots I'm in - thanks for the reminder.
@KatyDid ROCKS! Yes, we rockhounds love everything that goes into rockhounding. Great, informative video. Thanks!!
Replay Crew reporting for duty!

Hi Katy , enjoyed the adventure of searching for good and better places to find rocks . Love learning with you , you do a Great Job !!! Kava was good today , I know you appreciate that !!! Loved the trip , and the nice little finds . 🧡💚👋💥💫
Thanks so much!
Most of my fossil hounding was on state lands.. Some of the land owners would put up a fight, but doing your homework helps out and explaining the state laws to them help..
Most will say ok, a few will gruff, stomp and fume, but I play by the book and was nice to them..
True story! Thanks, Michael. :)
Thank you Katy. I really enjoy your videos. Some day this Texas girl will get to Montana.
You are so smart Katy!
Ha, only sometimes. :D
Sending the gopro out to scout out gravel spots might help a lot. Just a guess. Great fun tagging along on you and Kava's adventure and you found some nice specimens. Looking forward to seeing them cut and polished at some point. Keep on doing Katie xo
Thats a good idea!
Thank you for all the information. I hope it will also work here in Saskatchewan. I am going to look into it. So far I just look wherever I walk and out where I work I go for walks looking for rocks. The exercise is just a great side benefit.
I don't have any idea about Canadian public lands - hope it works out!
Lol! With so much of your knowledge come so many more questions in my mind!!! Thank you!!!
:D
I'm glad you mentioned the rock hunting pass for state lands. Money any way they can. Loved your rock area finding via maps. I have done it for years and have been fairly successful
The internet makes it possible, but it sure is a lot of work! :)
@@KatyDidRocks 👍
Thanks for also sharing the beautiful cactus flowers we don't get those in Ireland thanks for sharing your journey 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
I really appreciate your time and consideration for 1st x ers. I sat up right away when i recognized several of the rocks u found. Amazing and eventful for me. Indiana, creeks, rivers to go hunting rocks and other shining pieces. I'm from Madison Indiana and live one block from the Ohio River where im finding shells, fossils, pink, blue, green rocks and so much more. I'll be sure to keep watching ur videos. Thanks for the heads up on rockhounds. ❤🎉😮😊
Thank you for the feedback!
Wow cool and fun
Thanks!
Thanks for info! Great finds!
Thanks for watching!

You are welcome!
I am planning to go to Montana I saw Rob from Michigan rocks out there and I have subscribed to you and Montana rock mom and Theo. It’s beautiful country I have never rock hounded out but I was out there sightseeing.😊
You'll have a great time!
@@KatyDidRocks Yes I believe I will this fall probably.
Thanks for taking us on you're journey, this was very helpful and also so relaxing to watch! I hope to go rock hounding for the first time soon, so the bit about the maps was very helpful!
I’m so glad you found them helpful!
A nice one, Kate
Thank you! 😃
Really cool video! I love seeing how to find places to hunt rocks. Now I have to apply this to Georgia 😂
I hope it works!
I love bird song as well ❤
:) Me too!
Kate, find out where the creek is that MRM went to! She found some awesome stuff!!
I think I already know. :D
Could you explain how use Montana Tech website. I have not been able to find the map you reference in the video.
I really enjoy your videos.
Hey there! The link should be in the video description. It’s a little tricky, and requires some patience, but it’s worth it. 😊
Thanks for the info Kate! I learned about the maps and the knowledge will come in handy. I enjoyed seeing the flowers as well. The cactus and mariposa lily are beautiful!
Glad it was helpful!
Love that rock at 9:24!! Will you cut that one to see what's inside? Great hunt!!
I have been considering it. It's on my "think about this" tray. :D
Hi! We will be going to Glacier National Park this week. Would I be able find agates there?
Hello! No, agates are on the eastern part of the state - but you will find INCREDIBLE scenery! Also, there is no collecting of any kind within the boundaries of the national park. Have fun!
👍👍👍
:)
I'm trying to look up the same kind of maps for washington state but having no luck any suggestions?
Public lands app, Washington: www.khq.com/news/wa-state-launches-new-app-for-viewing-public-lands/article_2ad56c38-2e3f-5099-944c-e8ba77c78b39.html Geologic map: ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/dmt/docs/schuster07b.pdf You might also consider OnX Hunt, which is a great app for finding public lands.
Where do I find those maps? Thanks
Hi! I just edited the details of the video to include the links - thanks for the reminder!

Hello from Ontario Canada! It looks absolutely beautiful in Montana
It really is.
So Katie that 10.00 charge is for 1 day or 1 year or indefinite.
It’s an annual fee, 😊
@KatyDid ROCKS! thanks I appreciate that
The hole could be a Fox den
Sure could be!
Well that would be a true moss agate
:)
I always find spots where the rocks are all completely covered in dirt 😞
This year it's really silt-covered on the river - not as easy to find stuff. :)
Who goes rock hounding and finds 3 dead cows😂😂😂😂😂 not the luck u wanted but sure is unique
LOL, you're not wrong!
Get your dog some water!
It does get hot out there! She gets plenty of water, although it’s simpler when we are on the river. 😂
Her tounge was way out that's why I was concerned.@@KatyDidRocks
